i. of growing up

The mystery that has plagued her entire life is this: Dawn doesn't know her beginning. She knows all about the day she was adopted, oh, that's the part her parents boast about; her entire childhood, all she heard about was how she was saved. Only a toddler when she was plucked from District Nine, with nothing but scraps for clothes and a small pendant on a necklace with Nine's symbol, she doesn't remember much. She doesn't know where her story begins, nothing before that fateful day when she stumbled into her new parents' arms, kicking and crying, a child begging to be loved. Sometimes, when it's really quiet at night, she thinks she can still hear the wheat rustling with the gentle wind.

They were fine folk, her parents, but they had a hard time differentiating between love and possession. She grew up having everything she could ever want when it came to money; the prettiest dresses, the accessories, the hairs, the coolest toys and all the books her arms could carry. And they gave her attention, too. They gave her tenderness, sometimes. They loved her, but in their own way. She always needed to prove herself to them, she was always scrambling for their acceptance. She was their shiny trophy, the poor girl who had to be grateful to be living such a luxurious life, the lucky one, out of so many other less fortunate orphans. They never let her forget that, and despite loving them, too, she was always aching for something more.

When she's young and they push her to work in the Games, she obliges, like she always does. The yearly horror show often makes her avert her eyes from the television, sure, but she can pull her lips back and offer a smile and lie her way through this. Styling was the easiest option to stay far enough away from the carnage, and although it protected her from having to consider some of the more dreadful aspects of the Game, it didn't keep her from mourning every single loss. Every kid that wore her creations was held so dearly to her heart, even when she was just starting. The motherly instinct she felt towards them was something she couldn't hold it in if she tried. The pain of loss never gets easier to face, no matter how much the pile of bodies under her grows.

ii. of loving

She grew up thinking love was a fighting game, one step out of line and you lost it. She thought love meant buying shiny things, and parading around parties, and choking back tears. She had partners in her teenage years, silly flings here and there that never went anywhere, and she thought that was it. Love wasn't unconditional, love wasn't for everyone.

Like a moth who couldn't find a flame, by her young adult years Dawn had accepted that she was destined to flap her wings around the darkness aimlessly until she tired herself out. And despite all this emptiness, she still carried her heart in her sleeve, a safety hazard as much as it was her biggest strength. Her hands always ready to help someone in need, she was always scrambling to give out the kind of unconditional love she never got from her parents, an empty cup pouring itself to fill others.

Then, she met Aeron. He was kind, and gentle, and he might as well be the Sun itself for the way he warmed up every room he walked into. The connection between them felt immediate, something sharp and undeniable, like the stars had always known their names. Dawn feels as if she can breathe for the first time in years.

She was born to be a mother, she knows this now. She'd grown up mothering every living thing that passed her way, and for a while there, she thought that would be enough; taking care of tributes, taking care of friends, taking care of fleeting lovers. But once she meets Aeron, she realizes the itch runs much deeper. It's a consuming desire, electric all through her body, how badly she wants to have children running around their house. Little ones to climb up the tree in their backyard, and draw on walls, and fill up the house with laughter. Aeron wants to be a father, too. Everything works out perfectly in her life, until it doesn't.

iii. of fighting

She can't dedicate herself to a family while she's still overworked by the Capitol, so when she puts in the request to retire, it's only because it feels fitting. She has an excuse to be let go, and they have an excuse to find a better stylist to put in her place. Someone more passionate, someone with more drive. She's already twenty-eight, she's sure there are handfuls of much younger, much more talented people out there they can choose from.

They don't let her retire. While at first, she thought she was offering them a perfectly balanced way out, now she realizes she was begging. And they hadn't obliged. She'll never forget the way Aeron's face fell when she told him the news, and the way he'd marched out of their house the very next morning, to fight for their future. To fight for her.

The next day, when she comes back home, exhausted and longing for her partner, she notices his coat isn't hanging by the door. There aren't any pots on the stovetop with dinner ready, waiting for her. There aren't extra shoes by the door, no notes on the fridge. She rushes to their bedroom to find none of his clothes in their closet, his toothbrush, his medicine, everything he ever touched, gone. Wiped from existence. She would've thought herself completely insane if it wasn't for the ring still on her finger, his initials written into it.

That's the message they send, to warn her never to stand up again. They send silence. No matter how many times she asks, they never tell her what they did to him. She can be on her knees, she can be pulling her hair out; she has barged into offices screaming until she had to be dragged away by security, and they still never give her anything. Nothing except a few more threats to remind her of the leash they have around her neck. They tug, and she follows.

iv. of giving up

There's no way around it, she knows, and once she understands that, something in her dies. She settles for the reality of never having her loved one back, and it kills her, too. If before she was a searching moth, now she has been caught by the capitol, her delicate wings pinned to an exhibitional board and drying out.

She continues working for them, and with every passing year, she's less and less inspired. The critics drive into her, looking to sink their teeth into easy prey, reminding her she's doing a terrible job any chance that they can. These jabs never work their way under her skin, because there's a state of numbness after she accepts the loss of Aeron in her life. Her dreams, her love, her everything, gone so quickly, ripped from her arms without notice. She has no hopes of him even being alive.

There's numbness, and it's almost uneventful because of it. She feels like she's barely living anymore, simply surviving to get by, pushing one foot after the other to keep moving. There's a spark of wrath somewhere, a flicker of red in the darkness of her chest that leaps around every once in a while, but her own dullness doesn't let it thrive. Another year passes, another Games she works on. That year, when she's sending her kids off to battle, her vision fails her.

She can't remember collapsing, but it must've been what happened. One minute she's within the Game headquarters feeling dizzy, the next minute she's waking up in a doctor's office. Her body shakes with shivers, her hands are as pale as the gown they have her wearing. The staff looks at her with pity, their eyes avoiding hers like they're hiding something. They speak in terms she's never heard of, and they're not direct when she demands to know what happened, but the gist of it is this -- there's more pain for her to carry in her life. She's been poisoned -- they don't tell her how --, and the substance has rotten her insides. She's pushed out of the hospital with the diagnosis of a lifetime of migraines, occasional shaky hands, and the inability to ever have children. That's when she understands the message they're sending.

And she feeds the spark in her chest until it turns into a forest fire.

v. of loving ii

When she loves these kids, now, it's almost out of spite. That's the one thing the Capitol can't take from her, the one thing they've tried beating out of her when they killed her spirits. They almost succeeded, too. They made her feel weak, hopeless, nothing more than an undead carcass dragging herself around without a goal. She won't let them do it, ever again.

So she loves the kids. She doesn't turn away from the screens anymore, she feels every splatter of blood, she cries for every death. She loves them endlessly, and without reservation, and without fear. She offers warm arms they can run into, and a shoulder to cry on, and a caring hand to push their hairs back. If the Capitol wants to kill her for this, then so be it.

She'll accept death knowing she went down with a goddamn fight.

summary: sometimes it was easier to see someone struggling when you’ve been in their shoes.. especially when that person is trying to hide it so badly..

You couldn't quite pinpoint the exact moment that it became like this, but maybe it wasn't necessarily just one moment, but a bunch of them that got your mental state to where it was now.

The constant stress weighing you down, working even harder than all of the boys because you always felt like you had to 'make up for something', then, naturally, not being able to see friends or family much because of that, often being on your own and lonely, despite living with your brothers..

..your life might look like it was glorious and amazing and you were sure that a lot of girls would trade your life with theirs in an instant and without thinking twice, but behind the glitz and glam was a darkness that you kept hidden from the world, too afraid that if they saw it, they would judge you for it.

No, you never showed anyone that part of you.

That part, that made you cry in the middle of the night just because you were so damn sad, despite having every reason to be happy. That part that, made you lock yourself in the bathroom, slide down the door and sob for hours, shaking and not being able to breathe properly because of the anxiety that was suffocating you. That part that made you scared to go outside on your own, too afraid of.. well.. everything and everyone.

These days there were more parts you had to hide than you could show.

You thought about talking to someone about it, one of your members maybe, or maybe a friend in the industry, but you didn't want to show any weakness when nobody else was doing so either.

Yes, there could be a chance that most of them were all only pretending as well, but if so, then you didn't want to be the only one who stopped pretending.

You had to be strong.

And well, you thought being strong meant not getting any help. From anyone.

Today was supposed to be a day like any other, except that it was concert day.

Japan, to be exact.

You haven't had a good night's sleep, got up super early to practice some more, and were now having rehearsals for the upcoming show tonight.

Someone was talking, but you couldn't hear it. As your eyes stared at the empty arena, all you could hear was a buzzing noise.

So many people.. yet again, looking at you with nothing but expectations to give them the best show they've ever seen. So much excitement to finally see their idol, their role-model, the perfect (Y/N).

You gulped down hard, started to fidget with your microphone.. something that one member noticed.

Yoongi had been listening carefully to instructions, but you had worried him ever since he saw you this morning.

Your dark circles were worse than ever and he could tell that you've gotten up earlier than the rest to practice some more. And the way your hands were shaking right now, the way you couldn't focus on anything.. he knew these symptoms.. he used to suffer from them and even know, from time to time, found himself falling back into that dark hole that Bangtan once pulled him out of.

While the rest of the boys continued to listen, Yoongi made his way over to you and gently took the microphone out of your hand.

“You've been hiding it well, you know?”

You didn't look up.. didn't answer. Just watched him repair your microphone.. 'repair'. It wasn't even broken, you just needed to keep busy to distract yourself.

“Only someone who's been through what you're going through can tell.. I have known for a while, but I had hoped you might open up to me on your own at some point.. but I don't think you will. Because you're too scared of what will happen if you do.”

Yoongi gently cupped your chin and made you look up at him.

“You've seen my struggles in videos, you've heard them in my lyrics, but I never really told you about them.. maybe it's time you and I have that talk now.”

Your eyes began to water, nodding once, twice and then lowering your head like you were ashamed, but Yoongi wouldn't have any of that.

“Namjoon,” Yoongi waited until the leader was looking at him, “We'll take a short break, okay?”

“Sure.. you guys go ahead.”

He led you backstage into the green room, making sure it was empty, before sitting down on a couch with you.

The room was filled with silence, the occasional laughter and happiness of your members through the microphones could be heard as they were still outside on stage, but nothing else.

It wasn't uncomfortable though, for neither of you.

Because you were both used to the silence.. you were relishing it the rare moments that you got it.

“You know.. throughout my whole life, I thought that depression was just something I had to live with. That there was no cure for it.. because nobody ever talks about mental health in this country. It's something that people simply don't think exists, or they laugh it off as if it's not that bad and tell you that you’ll get over it eventually. But depression, panic attacks.. these things should be talked about and they should be taken seriously,” Yoongi slid a little closer to you and grabbed your hand, “I was so afraid to talk at first. I thought people would laugh at me if I said I was depressed, because why would I have any reason to be, right? The guys figured something was wrong sooner or later. I kept telling them I was fine.. until I wasn't. Until I broke down right in front of them, sobbed my eyes out and couldn't stop.. I couldn't tell them what was wrong, because I cried so much that I couldn't talk anymore and all they could do was watch and hold me. After that day, it was clear that I needed to do something.. that if I continued to keep it to myself, these outbursts would happen more often, maybe on stage and.. well, one time it did.. I'm sure you saw that clip.”

You nodded, not looking at him, though, “Did the guys help you?”

“No.. well, yeah. They were there for me, cheered me up, or at least tried to, but what I really needed and what really helped me was therapy. Someone who had an outside perspective, someone who had the resources and the knowledge to help me. I went there almost three months, every week at least twice and I still go every now and then when I feel like I need to. Talking to someone, reaching out to someone.. getting help from someone.. that is not a weakness, sweetheart,” Yoongi's thumb gently brushed over the back of your hand, “I know that is what you are thinking because, I hate to admit it, but you're too much like me. You're afraid of showing the world the true you, because you're afraid the world is going to hate you for it.”

“You're you, Yoongi,” you looked up, a lonely tear running out of your eye, “But I'm me. If I come clean, people will attack me right away. Some of them are just waiting for me to slip up, so they finally have a reason why I should leave the group and let you guys be on your own again.”

“I'm not saying you should make a social media post saying: 'I'm depressed'. I'm saying stop putting on a smile when you don't feel like it. Why do you think I'm wearing face masks and hats that cover everything? Because sometimes I can't smile, there are just days that suck.. and because we're in a business where people watch our every move, these masks and hats allow us to at least not pretend,” when you were silent for another moment, Yoongi pulled you close against him and kissed the top of your head, “You're not alone, (Y/N). There are so many people with your struggles out there, you are not weird because you have these horrible thoughts. But there are ways to help you.. and I think therapy might be a good start.”

“But the rest of the guys..-”

“Don't have to know,” he interrupted right away, “This'll be our little secret for a while.. until you're ready to share it with them. And if you never are, then that's okay too.”

He gave you hope that day.

Hope, that you didn't always have to live with your struggles. That not being okay was okay. That you weren't weird.

With his help, you were able to end the concert tonight with a smile.

A genuine one.

With Yoongi's hand holding yours, making sure you knew that you’d never walk alone.

Not this path and not any other either.

He’d always be by your side.

alright so i’ll just drop some bullet points here that’ll tell u all about jay !

( tw : mention of suicide , drugs )

his father is one of the most well-known boxers around , but not for anything great : he was a major heavyweight champ in his early days but shortly after jayden was born his mother committed suicide after a really difficult struggle with postpartum depression , which was not aided by her concern for her husband’s dangerous and demanding career — after that , everything sorta went downhill for jay’s father .

he was caught in one of the biggest drug busts in new york history and went to prison , leaving 10 year old jay in the hands of his paternal grandparents in the hamptons , who already were more like parents to him than his father would ever be .

his grandfather was a big time boxer in his day ( then worked as a mentor to some other big names until his retirement ) , and his son’s troubles disappointed him because he wanted the vincent legacy to live on , so he started mentoring jayden to reclaim the family name in the boxing world .

for a while things went well and jay was into the whole boxing thing , but his grandfather began to put more and more pressure on him as he grew older , along with everyone else around him — he was the star of bhs’ wrestling team and everyone envisioned him up on the big stage , giving creed a run for his money — but jayden couldn’t see it . he really wasn’t that into boxing . sure it gave him an excuse to punch shit and get his anger out , but that only goes so far until you begin to question the true meaning behind what you’re doing .

for jay , the only meaning he could see in pursuing a boxing career was to reclaim the vincent name that his father had tarnished all those years ago , as his grandfather wanted him to , but that moment of glory wasn’t enough to outweigh the lack of passion jay felt underneath every punch — not to mention how much he feared following in his father’s footsteps . he also wasn’t sure he wanted to give his father the satisfaction of reclaiming their throne .

so what was he going to do ? well , where his passion lacked in boxing , it absolutely thrived in dance . his grandmother founded a major dance studio in the hamptons and jay spent many evenings there while growing up . at first he just did homework in his grandmother’s office , but then he started snooping on classes out of boredom before he befriended one of the male teachers who convinced him to try out a class . and from there it kinda snowballed . his teacher turned into more of a mentor than his grandfather would ever be , and jay felt more excitement leading up to his dance classes than his boxing lessons .

his grandfather at first saw dance as a good way for jay to keep up his stamina and exercise in different ways , but then he started to notice the imbalance between his grandson’s passion for dance and for boxing and he grew frustrated . “ dancing’s not for vincent men , " he once told jay . “ grow some balls and throw some punches . ”

out of pure fear of his grandfather and disappointing him , jay continued to pursue his grandfather’s dreams for him and trained almost every day , but then he’d sneak away to late night dance sessions because he just couldn’t avoid how magnetized he was to a life of dance . the creativity , excitement , and pure fun held more meaning than boxing ever would for him , but it took him until high school graduation to properly admit that to himself .

his grandmother , the wonderful spitfire of a woman she is , sneakily led jay through the application process of every major dance academy across the states , even though her husband found no use in sending their future heavyweight champion grandson off to college . she’s always supported jay for every decision he’s made and wanted nothing but the best for him , whether it was boxing or dance or something completely different . she’s the source of all of his confidence , ambition , and determination .

it wasn’t until the acceptance letter came in the mail from pace university that jayden came clean to his grandfather . it was a messy , loud , stressful , emotional night , but his grandfather eventually realized there was no use in arguing or fighting — he raised jay to be strong , independent , and everything he wished his son had been , and he knew that when jay set his sights on something , he was going to do it no matter what .

WHEW ok now we come to the present : jay has been excelling in pace’s commercial dance program , his passion for dance blazing brighter than ever before , and he’s returned home to the hamptons every summer to visit his beloved grandparents . with his senior year coming up , he has already lined up several auditions for world tours and music videos and more to set his dance career in motion . he’s honestly looking forward to seeing his old bhs alumni over the summer and rubbing their noses in the success of his own future that he is writing .

as for a lil about his personality :

he’s well known as the vainglorious , aka excessively proud of oneself or one's achievements ; overly vain .

not to say he’s a bit of a dick but ... he’s a dick .

as much as he hates to admit it , he definitely inherited his father’s hotheadedness and his utter selfishness .

he has always been the kid who doesn’t just think he’s the shit , but is the shit . he’s cocky in an annoyingly charming way and flirted his way up every social ladder during high school .

being the star of the wrestling team also didn’t help to deflate his ego sdljkhf like he didn’t love boxing or wrestling , but he knew he was damn good at it and just likes being the best .

as for some positives about my boy !! he is a charmer and he’s always loved to have fun . he spent so much of his childhood and teen years training and working hard that when he gets free time , whew he revels in it .

working hard is in his blood and he just oozes determination and will be your biggest hype man because he’s a dick but he still wants to see everyone succeed ! he knows what it feels like to be passionate about something and wanting to chase your dreams , and he will help you chase those dreams !!!

a big ol’ flirt , but he’s not really a player . he’s never been one to sleep around or act like breaking hearts is a sport . he grew up really admiring his grandparents’ marriage , all while remembering the poor relationship he knows his parents had , and definitely is a bit of a romantic . but that’s not to say he isn’t down to have some fun either lol

The product of an affair between his mother and a married man, Gideon made number three in a line of illegitimate children living off the scraps of a woman in love with herself and the word of God.

His father refused to acknowledge he existed despite the fact that he looked more like the man with every passing year. Anyone could see it - he was the spitting image and yet no one said a thing. Not once. Every Sunday he sat through a church service next to a man who’s face haunted him in the mirror and pretend he didn’t notice. Just as everyone else did.

If his brother was driven by lust and greed, Gideon’s vices were envy and wrath. Anger planted itself in his chest even before he was old enough to understand the emotion and it only grew as it got older - evolved until it became the core of his twisted being. He wanted to sink his fingers into the almighty God his mother so desperately clung to and rip out his heart.

The kids he went to school with - his peers - they were all so shiny and happy with their semi-functioning families and new clothes. With their full-stomachs and fancy pens. He wanted what they had - no he wanted more. He wanted to be special.

Violence was commonplace, the urge to destroy what wasn’t his. Despite what half a dozen school counselors told his mother, it wasn’t the attention he wanted, it was the revenge. (Okay, the attention played a bit of a role, but not nearly as much as they gave it credit for.)

His mother’s answer to his behavioral issues was always the same - pray to God. Force him to pray to God, to repent for sins he was happy to commit if it meant he felt something. Something other than envy - than the sickly green jealousy tinting his vision.

He stopped believing in God the moment he understood what kind of life he was living. As soon as he was old enough to understand that his siblings were the only ones that gave a shit about the bruises on his too-thin body, about the holes he wore through his threadbare jackets in the winter.

If God was real, he didn’t deserve the dirt under his feet much less the churches dedicated to his greatness. Nothing satisfied him more than the thought of burning one down - of watching the beautifully crafted building go up in flames. The idea was more beautiful than any painting his brother could ever create.

Gideon realized he was no one’s favorite the day he turned eighteen. Not even his siblings - the only people he actually cared about. They’d choose each other over him, he was sure of it, just like their mother had chosen Lucifer over him.

Someday. He promised himself someday he’d be someone’s first choice. And he found his opportunity with the Reapers - one of two Motorcycle Clubs in the area he grew up. Once he worked his way to the top, he’d have people willing to die for him. People would be jealous of him, of his power.

Still, even as he worked his way up the ranks...there was something holding him back. His father - the bastard who he couldn’t run away from. The man who’s features followed him everywhere, who’s reflection he saw in every mirror. So...he took care of it.

Killing his father was the closest to heaven he’d ever gotten. The sound of him begging - forced to acknowledge the monster he’d had a hand in creating - it was music to his ears. Even covered in sticky blood and bearing a few injuries of his own, he was content. And hungry for more.

Lying low for a time until his father’s murder blew over, Eon spent his 21st birthday sleeping in a motel and blowing a bartender for free drinks before returning home - finally back where he belonged: with the reapers.

& Useless Headcanons

Eon is a huge fan of classical music, especially orchestral arrangements. He wanted to be a part of the orchestra when he was younger but he didn’t have the money to do so. He even dated the first-chair violinist for a while just for the free lessons - it helped that she was gorgeous and absolutely infatuated with him.

The only people he truly cares about are his siblings - they mean the world to him, even if he does find himself jealous of them more often than not.

His criminal record is miles long and mostly consists of petty theft, underage drinking, public disturbance, and aggravated assault.

He’s not great at reading people and he has a hard time emphasizing, though watching his brother has helped him figure it out a bit.

If it’s not instigated by him, he hates it when people touch him. It doesn’t matter if it’s a gentle brush of a shoulder, a friendly hug, or a punch to the face - it sets him on edge.

He rebuilt his bike all by himself after buying the thing for cheap and scavenging for parts. It’s not perfect but he’s too stubborn to let anyone else take a look at it.

He can’t stand silence so he often puts on cheesy cooking shows in the background before he goes to bed - it’s no one's business if he actually stays awake for hours and watches Bobby Flay kick people’s asses.

known for his intelligence and much higher than average I.Q. he likes to keep up his ‘hot nerd boy’ image by wearing glasses despite not needing them. however he’s said image is way too easy to crumble whenever he can’t keep his mouth shut.

really. the moments he actually looks smart and attractive is probably when he is either rumbling on about mechanic parts or holding a book.

Isono. Atem made a habit of snatching it out of his hand. It didn’t work very well due to height constraints. Seto developed an aching back in his twenties. So, by necessity, Seto has taken over the umbrella holding.

I don’t think either of them are, tbh. They’re both used to years of waking up unfathomably early. So my answer will be Mokuba, and his two big brothers basically carry him to his seat and put breakfast in front of him while he makes incoherent zombie noises.

Even when Mokuba starts drinking coffee and getting used to the corporate life, this doesn’t change.

who worries more when the other is sick/hurt

I think it’s more of a matter of who shows it more openly---in which case, my answer is Atem. But Seto definitely has a deep-seated terror of losing Atem, which usually translates into rage at Atem’s audacity, because how could the King of Games be taken down by a simple opponent/illness? This takes a while for Atem to understand.

Atem has The Rage too, but he displays blatant concern and care because of his exposure to Yugi’s openly affectionate soul and his friends in his first life

who plays pranks on the other

When has either of them backed down from a challenge? The answer is a resounding both.

Atem. He will gladly duel Seto over it. He’ll even wade through the trials of Monopoly for it. Such devotion is usually rewarded, because Those Abs deserve appreciation and they are damn well gonna get it

They’re both scared out of their minds when the other is hurt, as is undeniably canon. For one example, see the duel against Marik (dub): “No! Are you alright?”/”It’s you I’m worried about”/”Don’t. I’ll be fine!”

There is no evidence in canon (as far as I know) to suggest that Yugi drools when he’s asleep. But we only saw one episode of Atem in bed, and I don’t think he was asleep for very long. So...there is a possibility...

They both do, at the same time. Just blurted it out, all red faced and sudden while they were holding hands in the game shop looking at cards. It was beautiful and sweet and Yugi’s grandpa definitely got the reaction shots and sent it to the entire Friendship Brigade. God bless these dorks.
