Older siblings in media are so often misunderstood. Either adored or hated, but never an in-between. The pressure is always there, never enough or too much.
It’s the Steven Crain’s who are hated, the Fiona Gallagher’s who are forced onto a pedestal, the Dick Grayson’s who are reduced to nothing but their mistakes and issues, the John Dory’s who is only ever the oppressor and never the oppressed, the Isabela Madrigal’s who are considered vain and self centered.
It’s the eldest child who has no one on their team because they are the leader, and that is either meant to be taken from them or only ever for them.
It’s the Kate Sharma’s and the Anthony Bridgerton’s. It’s the Bill Weasley’s and it’s the Dean Winchester’s. It’s the Eric Matthew’s and it’s the Elsa’s.
The eldest sibling whose mistakes are over analyzed or completely ignored, who are never seen as humans because they are something to claim or destroy. The first born who is never understood in media or by fans, maybe it’s because acknowledging the fact that they’re human means they aren’t perfect is too much. Or maybe it’s because acknowledge that they are human and therefore cannot be defined by their mistakes and the weight they carry is too much.
They are not allowed to be perfect and yet if they are anything but perfect the world would riot.

Rewatching Hill House for the millionth time, and this time I'm thinking about Steve and Shirley, specifically Steve as Olivia's son and Shirley as Hugh's daughter.
Thinking about Olivia talking about telling stories to honor the dead, and Steve talking about his books as telling other people's stories, keeping the memories of the dead alive. Thinking about the fact they both saw the clock repair ghost, that the two episodes where he shows up are the two that are primarily from their points of view, Witness Marks and Screaming Meemies. Thinking about the Red Room door opening for the both of them, luring them in using their love for the twins. Thinking about how Hill House was Olivia's last architectural project… and Steve's first published book.
Thinking about Hugh's determination to "fix" everything, while Shirley talks about "fixing" the bodies she works on. Thinking about Hugh restoring houses, and Shirley restoring bodies, and the show directly comparing houses to bodies in the dialogue. Thinking about Shirley trying every key she's given to get into the Red Room to no avail, and Hugh trying to open the door with every tool at his disposal, also to no avail. Thinking about Hugh and Olivia dividing their architectural and restoration work so Hugh has the more hands-on, practical role, and Shirley and Kevin dividing their roles in a similar way.
I could keep going on both of these points, just. Yeah, even five years after it dropped, this show still gives me so much to think about.

The haunting of hill house being about how the kitchen is the heart of the house, because that’s where we spend the most time together, and the red room is the stomach, and it’s where we spend the least time together, and how the place where you eat is where you love and when you haven’t been in home in a long while, you confuse being eaten for being loved
I mean how could you tell the difference? Your mother fed you and now your mother feeds on you and isn’t that what love is? If I can’t have the heart, I’ll have the stomach. That’s the way to the heart anyways. That’s where everything goes.
Food is everything and every child would be swallowed up by a wolf if it meant being everything to something.
Every child just wants to come home. Be welcomed home. Be called home. They’ll offer up space inside themselves to do it. Lonely and starving and wanting to prove they can share.
Nell hopes for coffee.
Luke buys burgers.
Theo eats with Shirley.
Shirley insists on family dinner.
Steven is an eater. He eats stories. (Stories live longer than people. Stories keep people alive).
Hill house makes eating sound cruel, to make the kids feel guilty for being hungry, to make them hungrier, and make them choose being eaten over eating.
But the kitchen is the heart of the house.
It’s where they eat. (where they give and take and share and keep and indulge and provide love).
Steven is shared stories, and in turn shares them.
Shirley makes family dinners.
Theo prefers to eat with her sister.
Luke fills someone’s stomach.
Nell is asked out for coffee.

Steven “Steve” Crain
I've seen a lot of ghosts. Just not the way you think. A ghost can be a lot of things. A memory, a daydream, a secret. Grief, anger, guilt. But, in my experience, most times they're just what we want to see. Most times, a ghost is a wish.
