Summary: You and Steve start the process of adopting a child. There are a lot of steps that you have to go through, including a background check. You're worried about your past as Vixen is finally going to bite you in the ass. This is it. This is the other shoe you've been waiting for to drop.

“What is taking her so long?” you sigh impatiently.

“She’s only been gone five minutes. Calm down,” Steve chuckles from beside you. Steve looks over at you to see you bouncing your leg from how nervous you are. You’re wringing your fingers together to keep yourself from biting your nails. “Y/N, you’re acting like a criminal who just got caught. Take a deep breath.”

“Steve, this woman is the decider on whether or not we have a child. Forgive me if I’m a little anxious.”

Your social worker, Amy, takes another ten minutes before she’s back in the office, and you let out a relieved sigh that she hasn’t kicked you out… yet.

“I am so sorry. We’re extremely backed up,” she says and takes a seat across from you.

“It’s no problem,” Steve smiles politely.

“So, you’re looking to adopt a child? It’s a big responsibility.”

“Yes, ma’am. We’ve actually been wanting this for a while now.”

“Why now? Why not then?”

You and Steve look at each other in thought. Maybe it’s because you two were out fighting in wars you had no business being in. Maybe it’s because you finally came face to face with Zemo again after so many years of being away from him, and you almost killed him. Maybe it’s because even though you think you’re ready to be parents… you’re actually not.

“We felt like the timing wasn’t right,” Steve finally answers and peels his eyes away from you.

“Have you always wanted to have children?”

“Yes, I have,” Steve answers honestly. “For as long as I could remember.”

“And you?” Amy asks.

“In the beginning, yes. I mean, when I was a lot younger. Some shit happened to me and I didn’t allow myself to feel that way until recently. Maybe in the last couple of years? I can’t have children biologically, but I do want one.”

“I never know how to ask this question despite how many years I’ve been doing this, but what kind of parents would you two be?”

“I can’t say for sure. How can anyone know for sure? We’ve never taken care of a child before. There will be obstacles that we might not know how to get over but I can tell you one thing. We will do our very best to make sure this child is loved, safe, and raised to be the best person they can be.”

“That’s a good answer,” Amy smiles and writes in her notebook. Steve rubs his thumb on the back of your hand comfortingly. “This is going to be a long process but I have confidence that it will go by quicker than you think.” She hands over a piece of paper to Steve. “Here is a list of everything I will be needing by the end of this week. Legal papers. You know how it goes. Next will be an extensive background screening for everyone living in the adoptive household. After that will be the in-home interview and inspection of the home.”

You don’t hear anything past background screening. What if they find out about Vixen? They won’t want to give you a child when they figure out how many people you’ve killed. What if they come for the home inspection and find your room of weapons? You’re not getting a kid.

“Okay,” you squeak out.

Steve notices your panic but decides not to say anything about it until you two leave the office building.

“What’s going on?”

“What if they find out about Vixen? The Winter Soldier? My time in Hydra?”

“They won’t--”

“What if they do?” you cut him off. “What if they don’t see me fit to be a mother? What about the guns and shit we have at the house? They’re not going to allow us to be parents with all that there.”

“Baby, you need to calm down. We’re going to do fine.”

His words go in through one ear and out the other. You hear him talk but you’re not listening to a word he’s saying. When you get home, you immediately head to the room with all your weapons and begin taking them off the wall. If you’re going to make this house suitable for a child, you have to make sure it’s safe for one.

“Y/N, it’s going to be fine.”

“No, it’s not. We live in a state where it’s illegal to carry outside your home. We aren’t even allowed to have this many weapons in the house.”

Steve knows you have to do this in order to make yourself feel better. He leaves you to box the weapons while he gets his phone out of his pocket. He calls Bucky, Sam, and Nat to come over because he thinks having them here is going to help you. He has always been the more level-headed one in the relationship which is why he’s being so calm about this. He has faith that everything is going to work out just fine.

“How long has she been like this?” Nat asks when she gets there.

“Since we left the social worker.” They know you and Steve have wanted a child for a while now. “Nothing I say matters.”

“Hey, Y/N,” Natasha says and walks into the room. “You doing okay?”

“No, I’m not. I have to get these weapons out of here. Can you keep them for a while?”

“Sure. You’re going to do just fine. If anyone deserves a kid, it’s you two.”

“No, it’s not okay. Amy is going to come in here and see all these weapons and she is not going to give us a child. This isn’t safe for one. Or she will know I’m Vixen and think wow, a mass murderer assassin doesn’t deserve a kid. Or she’ll know about Bucky, Thanos, and everything else we have done in our lives.”

“Would it help if we helped you?”

“Yeah,” you smile.

Bucky, Sam, Nat, and Steve help clear out the room until it’s bare. This is the room you’re going to use for the nursery. You don’t have any supplies since you’re not sure when you’re going to be getting a kid, so you’ll keep it bare for now. Bucky and Nat take the weapons to hold onto until this whole thing blows over. Your house has a basement that you can put them into only until after the inspections are done.

On the day of the interview and home inspection, you have cookies baking in the oven to give the home a sweet smell. You have been cleaning all day to ease your worries. Steve is nervous as hell but less than you are.

“I think this is the tenth time you fluffed that pillow.”

“It has to be perfect.”

“It is. You are. It’s going to be fine.”

“I know. It’s going to be great,” you smile. Amy shows up on the dot, and you let her in eagerly. “Welcome to our home. It’s good to see you again.”

“Thank you. Wow, smells good in here.”

“I have cookies that just left the oven. Would you like one?”

“No, thank you. I have two more visits to do. Not to sound rude but I’d like to get started right away.”

“Of course.”

You two lead her to the living room and sit across from her. Steve reaches for your hand and pulls it into his lap.

“To start with, why don’t you two tell me what you two do for a living?”

“We are employed with Stark Industries,” Steve says. Happy sends money to every Avenger on behalf of Tony. You don’t need a job when your job is saving people who need it. Does she not know you two are Avengers? “We make about two hundred thousand each every year.”

“Do you enjoy your work?”

“We love it. I can’t see myself doing anything else.”

“What are some of your hobbies?” Amy asks you.

“I love to sew. I love making my own clothes. I actually made my own wedding dress. It brings me peace whenever it’s just me, a needle, and some fabric.”

“And you?” Amy asks Steve while writing in her notebook.

“I like to draw, sometimes. I’ve been practicing more these days. I like to fish. We have a cabin up north that we like to go to when the weather is nice.”

“Tell me about your marriage, and how your relationship is with your significant other.”

You look at Steve and smile lovingly at him.

“There is nothing I wouldn’t do for this man. He has saved me in ways you can’t possibly imagine. He’s my best friend. Sure, we have our ups and downs, but there is nothing we can’t accomplish together.”

“She said it right,” Steve chuckles. “I love her with all of my being. Our marriage has been nothing but great for these past few years. I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

“That’s sweet,” Amy smiles and writes. “Tell me about your relationship with your parents.”

“Both our parents are dead. We don’t have any living relatives,” you answer.

“To get with the technical questions, why do you want to adopt?”

“I’ve mentioned this before but I’m sterile. I can’t have children on my own. I know Steve wants a family. This is the only way I know how to give it to him. We don’t want to do fostering or a surrogate. We feel like it’s more our style to adopt.”

“What she said,” Steve chuckles.

“If granted the opportunity to adopt, what are your hopes for your child?”

“That they’re a good person,” Steve answers. “That they’ll see someone who needs help and will want to do that for them. Who will love unconditionally.”

“Alright,” Amy writes. “This is everybody’s least favorite section. I’ve done your background checks.” Your heart drops. This is it. This is where she tells you that you can’t adopt. “Now my main concern is your work with Hydra. You are the Vixen.”

“Were,” you correct. “I’m not that person anymore. Yes, I have done a lot of bad things in my life. Things you can’t possibly imagine. That isn’t who I am now. I have healed from that part of me. I got help. I made amends. I got Hydra out of my head. I don’t associate myself with those people anymore.”

“What about Bucky?”

“Bucky is healed, as well,” Steve takes over. “He went to Wakanda and underwent the same thing she did. They’re both trying to move on from their past.”

“That’s all it is, Amy. It’s my past. It’s not my present and it sure as hell isn’t going to be my future.”

Amy goes through more routine questions before she gets ready for the house inspection. You tell her the plans you have for the empty room which will be the nursery. She doesn't say much but she does write a lot of stuff down.

“Thank you for coming,” you say when she is done.

“I’ll be touch.”

As soon as the front door is closed, your smile is lost.

“God, we’re not going to get a kid. Did you see the look on her face when she mentioned Vixen? She knows I’ve killed before. What person would want me to be a mother?”

Steve pulls you close and lets you vent. “We won’t know more for a while. Let’s just try and keep a calm head. Even if she says no, we can try other avenues. We will be parents. You’d be a loving mother.”

And wait you did. For two long weeks. You thought that was their way of telling you that you weren't going to have a kid. Until your phone rang and changed your entire life.

“Hello?” you answer frantically.

“Hi, Y/N? I have some news regarding your adoption application.” You and Steve wait with held breaths. “I am very happy to say you’ve been approved. I can’t wait to work with you.”

“We can get a kid?” you ask tearfully.

“That’s the first part of the process. We have sent in your application to mothers who are looking to put their children up for adoption. If and when they pick you, I will call with the next steps.”

“Thank you so much.” You cry when she hangs up. “We’re getting a kid.”

Steve pulls you in and kisses the top of your head emotionally. You have to wait for a birth mother to pick you so until then, you just have to wait. Most couples wait months or even years to get called, but you get a call from Amy only a couple of days later with a date set to meet a birth mother who chose your application among a few others. You’re nervous as hell because what if she doesn’t pick you? What if she hates you as soon as she meets you?

You get to the office where the meetings are held and wait for Amy and the birth mother to come. Her name is Jessica and she is too young to be having a kid. She is only twenty-three and she doesn't want kids at this age. Maybe when she is older but definitely not now.

Jessica walks in and seems to be about six months pregnant. She just came back from meeting a potential couple, so you straighten up and smooth down your skirt to make yourself look more presentable.

“Hi, it’s nice to meet you two. My name is Jessica.”

“Y/N and this is my husband, Steve. Thank you for seeing us.”

“Yeah, I was intrigued when I read about your hobbies and your work with Stark Industries. Did you know Tony?”

“Uh, yeah.” You look at Steve and have a silent conversation through your eyes. If she is going to pick you, she should know exactly who you are. “I hope this doesn’t affect us negatively but he’s Captain America and I’m… Vixen.”

It takes Jessica all of five seconds before she starts crying. This is it. This is where she runs for the hills and gets you blacklisted from ever adopting a child.

“Captain America saved my life,” she sniffles. “I was visiting a friend in Sokovia when Ultron happened. You saved me.” She turns to Amy and wipes her eyes. “I don’t want to see anyone else.” She looks at you with a teary smile. “I can’t think of anyone better to care for my child than you two.”

“I’ll get the paperwork started,” Amy smiles and leaves the room.

You can’t believe what you’re hearing. You’re getting a kid. You’re getting a kid. You’re finally able to start your own family.

2022 Fic Roundup Meme

Total Fics Posted: 975 so far (two are hidden right now because they're for anonymous exchanges!) but by the end of the year, it SHOULD be 1,108. I've got three more exchanges due by the 31st, plus 40 #hanukkahbingo drabbles, and then hopefully daily drabbles are back now that the Star-Spangled Big Bang is over and my brain is being a little less eaten. We'll see if Fandom Trumps Hate starts eating my brain, though, because that's the longest of my remaining 2022 stuff!

Total Words Posted: By the end of the year, it should be ~175,000. Currently it's 150,181.

Total Words (of Anything Excluding Blogs) Written: Somewhere between 200,000-250,000, I think, which is pretty usual for me. Most of what I write I just kind of immediately post, but I do have some WIPs kicking around the ol' WIP folder. I didn't start using a comprehensive wordcount tracker until mid-October, so I don't know exactly!

My favorite fic story this year: Either Not In The Answer But The Question or Five Times Captain America Fucked A USO Girl & One Time Steve Rogers Got Fucked -- I'm proud of both, but in different ways. I think both really challenged some of my writing hang-ups and turned out well. I'm happy with all of the longer-than-a-drabble stuff that I wrote this year, though! And I mean, most of the drabbles, too, but there aren't any that necessarily stick out in my head as far and away better than the others.

My best story this year: Not In The Answer But The Question, although I do feel like I rushed the pacing on the last quarter because I had to make the BB deadline (hah). People seem to think it still sticks the landing, though!

Story most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: I'm actually going to give a real answer for this one this year, which I usually don't, but I'm going to say that I thought both a smile on your immortal face and Gee, I Hope You're Ready for a Fic About Death would get a couple more hits than they have. I know neither is a massive fandom, but Beetlejuice The Musical DOES have over a thousand fics and there ARE a lot of WLW American Girl fans, so I thought both would get a little more traction than they have. But it's okay! I had a ton of fun writing them either way, and I'm really happy with how they turned out.

Sexiest Story: Five Times Captain America Fucked A USO Girl & One Time Steve Rogers Got Fucked is the smuttiest thing I've written in YEARS and I think the sex all turned out pretty well! I don't write many E-rated drabbles because it's difficult to create sexual tension within the word limit in a way that's ~satisfying, so there isn't a ton of competition haha. I am going to attempt the MCU Kink Bingo in 2023 though!

Most fun story: Ooh, good question. I'm gonna say Gee, I Hope You're Ready for a Fic About Death because it makes me laugh and because it was a really quick writing process because I was having fun. "Fun" isn't necessarily my brand when it comes to writing? For someone who only likes bubblegum pop and Disney Channel Original Movies, I pretty much only write super thoughtsy-feelsy quiet, meditative character studies, lol.

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: To coopt myself from the 2012 meme, “if I write a fic and it doesn’t change my feelings on the characters or fandom in some way, then I don’t think I wrote it correctly.”

Hardest story to write: I'm going to answer this with one that isn't posted yet and say my massive shrinkyclinks longfic that I started in 2021 and had hoped to finish and post this year! It's been a much slower writing process than I wanted it to be, just because I want to get it Exactly Right and because longfic makes me super anxious about My Value And Worth In This World Hinge On This Story And Whether People Like It.

Biggest surprise: Reiterating from last year's meme -- "Actually sticking to the drabbling! In the past when I tried Three-Line Fic Thursday and Five-Sentence Friday, I failed miserably, and I’ve failed myself at drabble challenges, too. But for some reason this time it’s stuck and is genuinely working to remind me that I can get words out, I can have ideas, and I can get those ideas out in words. Yay!"

A story I want remembered: I mean, if I wrote anything this year that anyone remembers fondly, that makes me happy. But I do have a soft spot for Not In The Answer But The Question.

Resolutions for 2023: FINISH LENT FROM TOMORROW (TODAY WAS TOO SMALL FOR US). BE A FINISHER. FINISH THE THING. Also, do Femslash February and a drabble March Madness again because they were really fun this year!

When I Started: I first posted this story on September 26, 2021 for a bingo event and then abandoned it while I finished a bunch of other events and fics.

How I Lost My Shit: While I knew I wanted to write something magical, I wasn't sure how I wanted the story to develop. All I knew was that I couldn't figure it out, even well into this event. Brainstorming sessions resulted in several outlines, none of which felt right. It wasn't until I'd finished writing chapter 3 that I figured out how to structure the story.

How I Finished My Shit: After multiple outlines and brainstorming sessions and a few writing sessions that ended with a lot of frustration, I had a breakthrough while writing chapter 3. After consulting my current bingo cards, I saw a pathway forward and was able to pound out the rest of the story within a few weeks after being stuck for months.

Before you were taken, before you got your world turned upside down, you had a dream. You had a dream that one day you’d be wearing a beautiful white gown that closely resembles the one your mother wore (hers got destroyed in a house fire when you were young), standing in a room with all of your best friends who couldn't be happier for you, marrying the love of your life. You had that dream many times even after you got taken by Hydra. It’s what kept you from going insane in the beginning. When things got tough, you’d close your eyes and imagine your wedding day.

Never did you think it would finally come, and it finally did.

Instead of a room filled with a ton of your friends, it’s Natasha. She died giving herself up for the Soul Stone, but when you and Steve returned the stones, they gave her back in exchange for the stone. You didn’t think that was possible but it was, and you brought her home to everyone.

It’s sad that Tony never knew she made it.

You stand in front of the floor-length mirror and admire the dress you made yourself. You drew inspiration from your mother’s wedding dress. It’s been so long since you’ve seen it but you can recall every detail by memory. It’s not an exact replica but is very similar. Natasha walks up behind you and fixes the dress from the back. It has an open back that clips right behind your neck, and the entire bodice is a flowery lace material. The dress goes all the way down to your feet and is loose and airy, nothing like those puffy dresses people where nowadays.

“You look beautiful,” Natasha smiles.

“Thanks, Nat,” you whisper.

She is your Maid of Honor while Bucky is Steve’s best man. You only have one person because the wedding is so small. Clint offered his farm for you to use which is why it’s so small. The only people in attendance are your closest friends and family--mostly Avengers and their family. There are minimal decorations but it’s very elegant and intimate.

Someone knocks on the door and you two turn to see Sam walk in.

“It’s time.”

“I’ll see you out there.”

Natasha kisses your cheek and leaves the room. When you asked Sam to walk you down the aisle, you could have sworn you saw tears roll down. Your parents are long gone and you wanted the person giving you away to mean something to you. Sam is that person. You and Bcuky are close but by trauma, and Sam was the next best thing.

“Wow, you look beautiful.”

“Thank you, Sam.”

“Are you ready for the rest of your life?”

“Is Steve?” you joke. You put your veil on and smile. “I’m ready.”

Bucky and Natasha go out first followed by Morgan who is your flower girl. Pepper had no problem with letting her little girl be part of your wedding. Toy has been a big part of your life, so having her be the flower girl is like having a part of the wedding. There is a picture of him sitting next to Pepper to symbolize his presence along with everyone else who has died.

Then, you and Sam enter the main ceremony room, and everyone rises. Steve stands at the altar wearing his 40s military uniform that Bucky and Sam stole from one of the museums. It still fits him like a glove. The second he sees you, he immediately gets tears. He never thought he’d get to his day with you. He was positive that a mission would take him out.

Sam reaches the altar and kisses your cheek over the veil before taking a seat in the front. The ceremony doesn’t last very long and you get to your vows quicker than you thought. Both you and Steve have written your own vows, and he lets you go first.

“I don’t know where to start, honestly. Growing up, I had this idea of what I wanted my wedding day to look like. I had the dress picked out, who I wanted my bridesmaids to be, where I wanted the wedding, and what my first song was going to be. Then, I was taken and forced into something I didn’t want to do. I was broken down, beaten, and shaped into what Hydra wanted me to be. I didn’t know I could have the things I wanted. Soon, my mind wasn’t even my own.

“Then, I met you and it was like I could finally see. It’s like I’ve been in this tunnel all my life and seeing you brought me out of it and into the light. I got Hydra out of my head. I gained control of my life. I took back what they stole from me thanks to you. You saved me in more ways than one, and I can’t believe I get to stand up here and marry you.”

“I had a dream of my own. This was before the military where I wanted to marry a nice girl and make a family of my own. Like you, I was unable to. I had a duty to my country and gave it my all. The guy who went into the ice nearly a century ago had goals, and when I came out of it, those goals changed. I just needed to get through the day and face the next. I didn’t know I could have all this until I met you. You say I saved you when it’s you who saved me. I found myself wishing for the things I did in the 40s. Now I get to have them with you by my side. You’re a dream come true, Y/N.”

The rings you two have are simple ones but hold so much meaning. When you two kiss, everyone stands and cheers. The reception is in the same area as the ceremony but everyone makes room for your and Steve’s first dance as a married couple. It’s sensual. It’s intimate. It’s romantic. It’s everything you’ve ever wanted. Everyone else disappears since the only person who matters to you at that moment is Steve.

Afterwards, you go off to be with the girls and Steve goes off to be with his boys. Sam, Thor, and Clint toss back shots just as Bucky clasps a hand on his shoulder.

“Congratulations, man.”

“Thanks.”

“Do I have to have the hurt-her-and-I’ll-hurt-you talk?”

“No,” Steve chuckles.

“You know I’ll do it. I’ll kick your ass if you hurt her.”

“I know, and I’d let you.”

“She’d probably do the ass-kicking if we’re being honest,” Sam interjects with a smile.

“Yeah, she would,” Steve laughs.

One of the wedding games you planned is a game where you and Steve are sitting back-to-back with both shoes in hand. You have one of yours and one of his, and he has the other pair. Bucky has cards that he will read and you have to raise a shoe for the person you think is the most like the card.

“This is a great one to start with. Who wears the pants in the relationship?”

You immediately hold up your shoe while Steve holds up his own. Everyone laughs at the dynamic of your relationship, and Bucky moves on.

“Who is the best chef?” Both you and Steve hold up his shoes. “Who is needier when they’re sick?” Again, both of you hold up Steve’s shoes. “Who is the better driver?” This time, you two put up your shoes. You’ve had more practice. “I don’t know, Y/N, I’ve been in a car with you before.”

“You lived, didn’t you?” you grin at Bucky.

Nothing can ruin this moment. Hydra is gone from your head, Thanos is gone, and you can only go up from here.

Silently walking the halls of the castle, you try not to make a sound. One of the elder maids is walking next to you, huffing as she has to accompany you once again.

You’re new to the castle and tend to get lost in the endless hallways. “You can’t always get lost,” she snarls. “I got better things to do than keeping an eye on you.”

“Please forgive me for my mishap,” your voice barely above a whisper you follow her lead. You don’t want to anger the elder maid. “It won’t happen again.”

“We are chambermaids and are proud to serve the king, and his adoptive brother. Do not damage our reputation. It’s worse enough the king became-“ she bites her tongue and shakes her head. “Never mind. Clean the rooms, and don’t waste time. Go in. Go out. Don’t get seen.”

“Yes,” you whisper guiltily. Last time you fell into an easy conversation with one of the guests at the guest wing. A young girl, all alone to visit her uncle. One of the lords. “It won’t happen again.”

“Of course, it won’t happen again. One more mistake, and you’ll end up washing the sheets. Life of a laundress is much harder, I can tell,” she jerks her head toward a dark corridor. “It’s your turn tonight. He wants his room clean, and for you to disappear. Do not look at him, and don’t talk.”

“Whose room is this?” you glance at the dark corridor. “And why are there no torches lit? It’s pitch-black.”

“You’ll just go to the room at the end of the corridor. The one with the king’s crest,” you shudder as the maid tells you it’s your turn to clean the king’s chamber.

“Am I going to become his chambermaid?” your throat suddenly feels too dry, and your legs are going to give in. “I never was at the king’s chamber before.”

“Silly girl. Mawd got sick. She was a little too friendly to one of the knights,” she narrows her eyes as you don’t want to hear about Lizzie’s mishap. She’s one of the few maids being friendly to you. “Well, she won’t return anytime soon, that wench.”

You flinch at her harsh tone and the awful word she used. Mawd was nothing but sweet and kind to you.

“So, I’ll only clean his chamber tonight?”

“We clean the chambers in the morning when they are not around,” she tuts. “The king sent for Mawd to clean his room. He sometimes throws things around. I got no time, and the other maids are already asleep.”

She pushes you toward the dark corridor, hiding she’s too afraid to enter the king’s chamber, and that this is the reason for sending you into the lion’s den.

“Will it be dark inside the chamber too,” frightened, you look at the dark corridor again as she huffs behind you.

“Inside there will be no candles lit. You’ll have a fire in the fireplace, and you can use your candle. Don’t go inside one of the other rooms to the left or right of the room. These are forbidden.”

“I won’t,” you take a deep breath and slowly start walking toward the dark corridor. You shudder as it seems this part of the castle is colder than the rest. On wobbling legs, you walk toward the door with the king’s crest, swallowing thickly as you stand in front of the door.

“Stop staring at the door,” you can hear the maid but are too scared to answer her. You stare at the crest, feeling your heart speed up. You never got so close to the king’s chamber before and now you feel like you don’t belong here.

“I-“ with shaking fingers you reach for the door handle, holding your breath as you slowly open the door. It creaks loudly and you cringe, hoping the king is not in one of the other rooms.

You silently step inside the chamber and close the door behind you. The other maid was right, it’s pitch-black in here too. The fireplace provides the only light in the chamber.

“Who are you?” you shriek, startled as someone barks at you. You drop the candle to the floor, screaming as the only light you had gets robbed from you.

“You’re not the chambermaid cleaning my room.”

“I-“ while the man slowly gets up from his seat, you walk backward, stumbling over something on the ground. You end up on the floor, scrambling away as the man towers over your shaking form.

“WHO ARE YOU?” he growls at you. “You are not supposed to be here. What do you want? Steal my crown. Who sent you?”

“I-I shall clean your chamber, your highness…I mean my king. Mawd got sick,” you stammer. You can feel something cold poke your chest and you are sure, this is your end. “I was sent here, your highness…please.”

“Get up and leave. You talk too much,” he turns around to stumble toward the bed, grumbling under his breath. “OUT! I DON’T WANT YOU HERE!”

“Sorry…so sorry,” you scramble to your feet. “I can’t leave. You wanted Mawd to clean your room.”

“Do you want to die?” you feel the air shift as the king turns back around to storm toward you.

His hand is suddenly around your throat, and you get pushed against the wall. He breathes heavily and growls like a feral animal. Everyone was right. They told you the king is more like a feral animal than a man. He turned dark and now all that’s left of him is a beast, ready to rip you apart.

“Your maj-esty,” you whimper in fear. “I was told to come here. Mawd is sick. She cannot come here…please.”

You feel his breath fan over your neck, and you are sure he will just rip your throat out. Closing your eyes, you accept your fate. You pray to see your family again as the king buries his face in the crook of your neck.

“Go, and don’t come back or you’ll not leave this room ever again,” he snarls as he drops his hand from your throat. “I won’t tell you twice.”

“What about the chamber,” you croak, rubbing your sore throat. “D-o you want me to send someone else.”

“I didn’t send for anyone,” he breathes in your face. “No one is allowed to enter my chamber for the next days. Everyone knows that.”

You sidestep the king, carefully moving toward the door. “I’ll go, your majesty. I’m sorry.”

“You’re scared, huh?” he muses, watching you blindly grasp for the door handle. “Good. I don’t want you near my chamber ever again, omega.” He purrs the last word, or so you think.

Your heart is racing, and you can barely think straight as you finally find the door handle. “GO NOW!”

You almost ripped the door open to run along the dark corridor, crying and whimpering as you run straight into a solid chest.

“Careful, little one,” two strong hands keep you from falling to the ground. “What happened?”

“I must go,” you frantically look over your shoulder. “He doesn’t want me here…”

“The king, I see,” the man softly speaks. “He scared you, huh? You know that he’s not a beast, right? Steve is just…”

“Steve,” whispering the king’s name you wonder what the man wants to tell you as the king barks in your direction.

“Get out of my sight!”

“Steve,” the man says as you wiggle out of his hold to run away. “Can you not scare the little mouse to hell and back? She’s new here, just you know. Maybe she will be a good chambermaid.”

“I don’t want her,” Steve slams the door shut to return to his favorite place to hide from the world. The darkest corner of his bedroom. “She smelled too good…”

At the end of 2021, I told myself that I was going to take time to focus on getting through the mountain of incomplete fics I have on my hard drive and not sign up for any new bingos or events. Then came January and I bolted in the completely opposite direction.

So, with that in mind, in an effort to hold myself accountable and not have a repeat of this year, I’m publicly stating my current bingos/their due dates and my plan for next year, which is: no new bingos until at least July. One-off events are fine, but I should still only do them if I’m really, really compelled and inspired.

Here’s hoping this works.

2022 fic roundup

happy belated new year, everyone! now that 2022 is over, I’m back with my annual self-rec list! I honestly missed doing these -- in 2021 I hadn’t written any fic at all, and I’m really happy that I’ve managed to get back into it this year. I still didn’t write any longer fics that I’d usually post to ao3, but I did manage some ficlets.

“Tony,” Steve breathed, as he did another lap of the room, taking his time to admire the easel set up in one corner and the stacks of blank canvases by the window. There wasn’t any furniture in the quaint, cozy brownstone, at least not yet, but there were more than a few wooden crates overflowing with paint and brushes and sketchbooks lined up along the wall. “This is way too much.”

Tony just offered a casual wave of his hand. “Oh, c’mon, I’m sure you’ll use it all up eventually,” he said from his spot in the doorway, where he’d been taking in Steve’s reaction with a pleased grin. “You go through pencils quicker than you go through punching bags, no harm in having a little extra.”

Steve shook his head, gawking at the boxes of art supplies tucked away neatly just for him, still slightly overwhelmed by the sight of it all. Everything Steve had ever mentioned wanting, even in passing, was here, from a homey studio in the heart of Brooklyn to his favorite brand of watercolors, and while all of the thought that Tony had clearly put into this was very much appreciated—and heart-meltingly touching—Steve was having trouble wrapping his mind around the scale of it.

Over the course of their relationship, Tony had given him some pretty extravagant gifts, but nothing as big as a four-story art studio.

Alpine’s affectionate, but usually not this affectionate.

She butts her head against Bucky’s arm when she needs attention, she nuzzles against his hand when she wants to be pet — but recently, she’s been doing something new. More and more often, whenever Bucky finds himself laying in bed or sprawled out on the couch, Alpine will come over and burrow under his shirt, curling up next to him.

He has to admit, it’s pretty cute when it first happens. It starts becoming strange the second time. And by the third, Bucky’s downright confused.

It made sense, with the way Bruce had proposed weekly team dinners once they’d all moved into the Tower; the way he always offered to come along whenever Nat announced that she was going on a grocery run or Steve mentioned a new bakery he wanted to try out; the way he gravitated toward the common areas, though primarily the kitchen, as if waiting to be joined by someone else in silent companionship.

But now, Tony could see that he was only half-right.

Because Bruce’s real love language was food.
