The digital world is so convenient and nice, but just playing back a vinyl record is a much warmer, hotter, more present feeling.

Abracadabra: Steve Miller Turns 80
Whether one calls him the Gangster, the Space Cowboy, the Joker or something else, Steve Miller has added a new honorific - octogenarian - to his resume.
Miller, born Oct. 5, 1943 - abracadabra! - turns 80 today. As Miller once said, time keeps on slippin’, slippin’, slippin’ into the future, so show that man the pompatus of love.
Flying like a psychedelic eagle out of San Francisco with his eponymous Blues Band in 1966, Miller would soon enough drop the Blues to take the money and run with a string of hits throughout the 1970s.
Still one of classic-rock radio’s ubiquitous and unique voices, Miller is sure to keep on rockin’ me - and you, baby - as long as radio continues livin’ in the U.S.A.

In 1965 [the Byrds] toured England and Paul invited us to his club, the Scotch of St James’s [sic]. He sent a limo to pick us up. He said he had been listening to our music. We were blown away. He took us for a ride through London in his Aston Martin, at great speed. He was really hip, he and John were so tight it was like one person at times. Unlike the Byrds, [where] Crosby would just leave you out to dry, the Beatles all defended each other to the hilt. If you criticised, say, George then they would all respond.
[—Roger McGuinn, in Paul McCartney: Now & Then, Tony Barrow and Robin Bextor]
[John and Paul] sort of had their own way of communicating. Hardly anything was spoken, they just knew what the other wanted or was getting at and they had the most amazing talent.
[…]
Paul was an awesome musical presence. He was, like, ten feet tall with music and it was everything: folk, rock, musical hall, choral, it was all there. He was like a different animal with Lennon. When they were together they became something else, more than just the two of them together. That communication was incredible. It was like two high-speed computers just fizzing between each other.
[—Steve Miller, in Paul McCartney: Now & Then, Tony Barrow and Robin Bextor]

Into The Future
I just got this today. $12 at the local used record store. I had the 8-Track when it came out in ‘76. Listening to it now I could almost hear the crosstalk between tracks again. Time keeps on slippin’, slippin’, slippin’.

The #1 song from 50 years ago was “The Joker” by the Steve Miller Band.

The Joker
Songwriters: Ahmet Ertegun, Steve Miller and Eddie Curtis
Some people call me the space cowboy, yeah
Some call me the gangster of love
Some people call me Maurice
'Cause I speak of the pompatus of love
People talk about me, baby
Say I'm doing you wrong, doing you wrong
Well, don't you worry, baby, don't worry
'Cause I'm right here, right here, right here, right here at home
'Cause I'm a picker, I'm a grinner
I'm a lover and I'm a sinner
I play my music in the sun
I'm a joker, I'm a smoker
I'm a midnight toker
I get my loving on the run
You're the cutest thing that I ever did see
I really love your peaches, want to shake your tree
Lovey-dovey, lovey-dovey, lovey-dovey all the time
Oh, baby, I'll sure show you good time
'Cause I'm a picker, I'm a grinner
I'm a lover and I'm a sinner
I play my music in the sun
I'm a joker, I'm a smoker
I'm a midnight toker
I get my loving on the run
I'm a picker, I'm a grinner
I'm a lover and I'm a sinner
I play my music in the sun
I'm a joker, I'm a smoker
I'm a midnight toker
I sure don't want to hurt no one
People keep talking about me, baby
Say I'm doing you wrong
Well, don't you worry, don't worry, no, don't worry, mama
'Cause I'm right here at home
You're the cutest thing I ever did see
I really love your peaches, want to shake your tree
Lovey-dovey, lovey-dovey, lovey-dovey all the time
C'mon, baby, and I'll show you a good time
