He fucked up, he knew it the second his eyes found yours amongst the crowd, he had let his insecurities & imposter syndrome take the bait that Natasha had obviously set up for him, hook, line & sinker. He would need all of his strength not to put a bullet between her eyes for doing it, but he knew ultimately, they were his actions & he had to be accountable for them. He should have made it perfectly clear that he wanted nothing to do with those girls & he didnât have any intention of letting it go further than it already had, at least thatâs what he was telling himself.
The look on your face he knew would keep him awake at night, sure there was anger but the ease at which you looked like you accepted it threw him, as if you were already prepared for him to hurt you. There was no point chasing after you, as much as every fibre of his being urged him to find you & tell you it was all for show & it meant nothing, it would just end up with raised voices & him probably saying things he didnât mean because he had been backed into a corner of his own making. Instead, he shook off the two blondes latched onto him then watched as you said something to Natâs sister, down your drink then leave, without her, he wasted no time himself & without a word to anyone got up & left.
Earlier that night
The deal with stark had finally been done, he had spent the entire week burning the candle at both ends, meeting after meeting in all hours of the night interspersed with visits to your bakery to spend pockets of time with you over coffee when he could & he was never far from his phone to text you when he couldnât make it in person. He might have been out of practice dating, but he found the need to be around you at all times helped keep all his attention trained on you when it wasnât caught up with work, making sure to send you gifts to apologise for his absence & promising to make it up at the weekend where he had planned to completely spoil you silly, despite you insisting that you understood he was busy & the presents were not necessary.
Sat in his office breathing out all the tension he had been harbouring during the week he was relishing the thought of an evening of peace, he knew you had been roped into a night out so wanted to remain sober & free just in case you needed him to collect you, something he was persistent on since you told him you were going out. He would rather get up at 2am & make sure you were safe than you risk an uber & end up in danger, but you were stubborn as they got it would seem & refused a driver.
Steve, Sam & Natasha aka the three stooges barged in unannounced looking like they were on some sort of mission waylaying his plans to call you before you left for the night, it irked him that they would dare walk in without so much of a knock, Chanel no doubt on a break or left for the day. He scribbled down a note on his pad about installing a remote lock on the door, so he could be left undisturbed or maybe for when you visited to fulfil the fantasy of him bending you over his desk.
Sam clicked his fingers in front of his bossâs eyes who looked as though he was lost in his head somewhere, âwhatâs going on in that cyborg brain of yours Bucky, come back to us man, weâre going out to celebrate & weâre taking you with us.â
Blinking the reverie from his eyes he firmly shook his head at the thought, âNo thanks, got big plans tonight with my couch.â
The smirk plastered on Samâs face irritated the Mob Boss, he knew what was coming & was in no mood for his antics, âYouâre seeing that Baker girl again?â
âNo, sheâs busy Iâm gonna hang out in my apartment & if she needs a ride Iâll pick her up.â
Natasha scoffed hoping it would set her plan into action, âJesus, sheâs got you whipped. Since when do you turn down drinks & some company for a woman?â
Buckyâs head twisted towards the red head lounging on the couch in his office, âIâm not whipped at all, just fucking tired, still need to deal with the Rumlow situation too so gotta think about that.â
âWell you can be tired & think tomorrow, right now your staff have worked hard & wanna party.â As far as Bucky was concerned Samuel was far too jovial to be in the Mob, it should have been beaten out of him by now.
âThen go right ahead.â
It was Steveâs turn to scoff this time, âJesus one woman & youâre going soft, what would your dad think?â
He moved like lightening across the room, haunches up, blade out pressed to Steveâs skin before he had chance to flinch. âGet my fathers name out your fucking mouth.â
Natasha rose from the sofa to try & diffuse the situation, âChrist Barnes, youâve nothing to prove.â
He retracted the knife, running his hands through his hair trying to calm himself down, were people saying heâd gone soft? A few flowers & jewels werenât enough to make him soft, itâs not like he was marrying you ⊠yet. If all it took was him going out for a drink to shut them up, fine, he would happily prove them wrong.
It started out pretty tame, a few drinks in Vibranium, then Steve insisted on a strip club, Bucky still went along with it, but things escalated when two particular dancers who he knew intimately came over to give him a private dance, he tried shaking them off, but an eyebrow raise from Natasha shut him up. Of course, they followed him to the final club of the night, settling themselves on his lap, he wasnât totally comfortable & there was an unfamiliar feeling of guilt creeping up on him the entire night. He hadnât even checked his phone on the odd chance you had messaged him & by this point he felt utterly sick at the thought that you had asked for a ride at some point & he hadnât answered. He doubled down telling himself to relax & enjoy the company, he wasnât doing anything wrong & people were mistaken if they thought he had gone soft for a woman.
But the second he saw your eyes across that club he knew he had, one thing Steve didnât realise whilst goading his friend, was that whilst yes, his father was ruthless, almost taking pleasure in ending peopleâs lives, especially when they had betrayed him, he was temperamental, aggressive & an asshole but when it came to Winnifred Barnes, the man was as soft as silk. For his kids too, there was nothing he wouldnât do for them, he raised Bucky to be tough, but he typically used the carrot rather than the stick approach. The apple didnât fall far from the tree in that regard, but his father wouldnât have ever let his ma down like he had you & he swore to himself he wouldnât ever again.
Thankfully a line of cabs waited outside the club, you had spotted Peter waiting in Buckyâs car but in your haste to leave you avoided him & almost felt guilty for ignoring his wave, you had a feeling Bucky wasnât going to follow you out from the nonplussed expression on his face when he saw you, but then again you had a feeling he was a good guy, so what did you know?
He could easily drop by your place if you somehow managed to get in a cab before he came out to find you & you really werenât in the right frame of mind to face him, getting in the taxi there was only one person you wanted to turn to right now.
âHoney, what happened? Whatâs wrong? Are you hurt?â Wanda was frantically scanning you for injuries, having turned up to the hospital unannounced with a truly miserable look on your face, she didnât need to be a mind reader to know something happened.
You shook your solemn head, âNo Wands, Iâm ok.â
She wrapped her arm around you, holding you tight to her side, âClearly not, come on, Iâll take a break & you tell me whatâs going on, ok?â
You nodded & let her lead the way, she made a quick stop at the staff room for a hoodie & coffee, having felt how cold you were in your mini dress & her motherly instincts wanted to warm you up with something comforting, she found an unused suture room & set you both up with your drinks so you could tell her what was going on.
âWands why are men such scum bags ⊠apart from Vis of course.â You may have had your heart stomped on, but you didnât want to piss off your friend tarnishing all men with the same brush, mainly because she had bagged herself one of the good ones.
The look you had seen many times appeared on her exhausted face, you felt a flood of guilt that you were troubling her with your silly issues when she should be busy saving lives or napping on her break instead of comforting you through your issues, âOh honey, what happened.â
You sat pathetically perched on the table, legs swinging with the sleeves of the hoodie curled over your hands propping your face up with your elbows on your knees, âI went to a new club with Yelena & I saw James, he said he was gonna stay in tonight & wait for me to call so he could pick him up but he was there with two women sat on his thighs, practically licking his face.â
Her expression turned from pure empathy to vengeful rage in a split second, it was quite an impressive range of emotions to see in such a short space of time, âIâll kill him.â
Your shoulders shook from laughing at her terrifying voice, you had no doubt she meant it but her diminutive stature & the fact she was soft to her very core meant she wouldnât ever be able to inflict violence on anyone, âNo you wonât, but I appreciate the threat to his life.â
You twiddled your fingers in the jumper trying to work out how you were really feeling after the shock of seeing him settled, âThe thing is Wands, we hadnât discussed anything about being exclusive, so he technically didnât do anything wrong. I insisted he didnât wait for me all night but he was so adamant that he wanted to pick me up I assumed he was staying in, so again he did nothing wrong.â
You let out a big sigh trying to reconcile the other betrayal that had dawned on you in the cab after you deleted Jamesâ number trying not to feel a stab at the last message he sent you telling you how much he would miss talking to you tonight, âbut thatâs not the worst thing.â
Wanda hated seeing you so defeated, you never got hung up on a guy so knew it ran deeper than just him, âGo on.â
âIâm pretty sure I was catching some major feelings for him, so yeah it hurts, but what hurts the most is I think Yelena set it all up with her sister.â You could feel your bottom lip wobbling at the admission, never did you think Yelena would betray you like tonight, she was incredibly loyal, but maybe her loyalty sat with her sister more than it did you.
If the rage towards what Bucky did was scary, she went nuclear hearing that, âWHAT?â
âYeahâ, you nodded trying to stop your quivering lip turn into a sob, âShe was really tense all night even more than normal, she kept trying to rush me, telling me we needed to be there by 10 & whenever I asked why, she never really gave me an answer & was being really weird. She found a table that happened to be reserved, that happened to give me a clear view of where they were all sat & when I did see him, she didnât even acknowledge the situation, didnât move to punch him or threaten to kill him & she didnât even question me walking off or if she should come with me.â
A single tear escaped your eye & quickly blotted with your sleeve, âWhat you gonna do honey?â
You shrugged feeling more miserable with each passing second, âI donât want to see her.â
âThatâs fine, you have every right to not be on good terms with her right now but maybe she did you a favour. If thatâs the kind of guy he is on top of the Mob thing, which is bad enough already, are you really willing to put up with that?â
âhmmm.â You drummed your fingers across your chin, although no, you certainly wouldnât put up with that & the only chance you were going to give he blew you werenât mad at him, just disappointed that would be it between you & you gotten laid out of it. âI think Iâm going to become a lesbian.â
Wanda smiled at your ridiculously quick turnaround, only you could turn your frown upside down that quickly & make a joke out of it, although knowing you she wasnât sure the lesbian bit was a joke, âIf I recall you had your shot in college & you said it wasnât for youâ
Giggling you wouldnât help a little dig, âHa, maybe I didnât try hard enough, we worked better as friends Wands, you need to get over it already.â
âWe both know you love cock too much to be a full time lesbian.â
Now that had you laughing, you both doubled over at the bluntness of the statement, the arrangement with Peter delivering to the hospital meant you didnât get your usual Wanda time, you really had missed it. âGood point. Ugh I didnât even get to see his, it felt huge when I gave it a rub.â
âMaybe itâs a good thing you didnât see it. Like pandoraâs box or something, keep that genie in the lamp.â
âHonestly that thing could have granted every wish Iâd ever had, I know it.â She playfully batted your arm giggling away with you whilst giving you a side hug.
At least you still had Wanda in your corner, you stayed to catch up with her for the rest of her break before admitting you were exhausted & headed home, putting on your big girl pants in the Uber you sent a text to Yelena, immediately putting your phone on airplane mode to avoid any potential replies.
You were wary approaching your building, eyes darting around looking for anything unusual, any parked cars that werenât the norm on your street, it was late & you just wanted to go to bed. You hadnât heard a peep from Bucky or Yelena so half expected one of them to be waiting for you in the shadows, but apparently, they were as cowardly as you hoped, or they didnât care as much as you thought, with the coast clear you made your way into your apartment.
You headed straight for the bathroom with the intention of a long hot shower, passing through the lounge you didnât bother turning on the lights & caught a flash of red hair reflecting from the street lights coming through your window, the yelp you let out wasnât your proudest moment but the last thing you expected to see was someone sat in the dark waiting for you.
âShit, fuck, how did you get in Natasha.â Your hand instinctively covered your heart as it practically beat out of your chest.
âI thought youâd come straight here, so when you didnât show up I got cold, you should really lock your windows when you leave.â
Flabbergasted at her cool & calm demeanour, you scoffed âI have nothing of value.â
âI wouldnât say that.â She nodded to the necklace you were unconsciously holding, a habit you had picked up since you put it on a few days prior, the unwelcomed guest didnât fail to spot the piece of jewellery that once belonged to her bossâs mother hanging from your neck.
Having it pointed out that you were clutching it like some sort of comfort blanket, you let it drop suddenly feeling like it was weighing you down, âyeah well now youâre here, you can make yourself useful & return it to the sender.â
Natasha rolled her eyes, âBit dramatic, it suits you, you should keep it, he would want you to keep it.â
âWhy are you here Natasha?â
âI wanted to apologise for dragging Yelena into this. She only brought you to the club, she didnât know that was what you would see & I hope it hasnât ruined your friendship.â
She almost sounded sincere, but the dismissive shoulder shrug rubbed you the wrong way. âWhy did you do it?â
âI know Bucky, he had good intentions when it came to you, but he doesnât commit to women, so I made sure you saw the kind of man that he really is. You are too sweet for him, this life is not all sprinkles & rainbows, heâd ruin you & I didnât want you to get hurt.â
âAnd yet, I got hurt. Because of your actions, not his.â You let out a sigh, all you wanted was the day to be done, to take a shower, crawl into bed & sleep this feeling off, you reached behind the back of your neck to unclasp the necklace & threw it over to the red head. âSell it, flush it down a toilet or give it him back I donât care.â
As you turned towards the bedroom you looked over your shoulder to the red head still sat contently in your lounge, âlet yourself out.â With a brow raised she watched you walk away, maybe you were tougher than you looked, not many people spoke to her like you just did. Despite telling herself she did the right thing, as she studied the necklace swaying from her finger she felt a growing unease that she might have ruined two friendships & the outcome would push the two people together she was trying to keep apart.
You didnât even wait for her to leave before you turned on the shower & stripped out of your clothes, you felt the most naked you had all week without the weight of emeralds sitting on your sternum & the raw feelings exposed to the empty room.
One sob, thatâs all you allowed yourself as the heaviness of reality set in, betrayed by your friend & discarded by a man, all in the same moment & it fucking hurt, tears didnât count in the under the steaming hot water so maybe you were crying, maybe you werenât, but the pity party ended the second you stepped out.
Bucky sat in a blacked-out Aston Martin DBX watching you rushed off your feet serving customers, Yelena hadnât been in to work today, he hoped it was because she was sick or hungover but deep down he was feeling an insurmountable guilt that you may have lost a loyal staff member & friend because of him. His worry that you worked too much was now in overdrive, you werenât even going to get a moments peace if no one was helping you out, you may not accept it, but he shot a text to the one person he thought you could do with right now.
Finding your necklace on his desk first thing was the first crushing blow to his day, he still hadnât dealt with Natasha & he had a feeling she had something to do with it being returned but she was nowhere to be found, wisely choosing to make herself scarce.
He was going to fix this, that he was sure of, he knew it would take patience & lot of grovelling, you were worth it & hopefully it would prove to everyone how serious he was taking this, it wasnât a test run or an experiment, for once in his life he was committed to committing.
Peter turned up shortly after your third mini meltdown of the day, it was too much serving customers, clearing tables & baking, once the day was done you would be able to take a breath & re-strategize how you were going to cope on your own. The sight of an enthusiastic volunteer both warmed your heart & made your blood boil, Bucky knew you were alone, which mean he had stopped by without you noticing & you knew he sent Peter to check on you, a canary down the mine to feel out how mad you were.
Your stubbornness was about to fuck you up, you could see that, you could acknowledge it, so why were you letting it take over all logic that was screaming at you to accept the help, even if it was indirectly from him. A deep sigh recalibrated your brain & you reached for Yelenaâs frilly apron handing it to the literal excited puppy in front of you, âThank you Peter, can you clear the tables whilst I serve customers.â
âWill do Boss.â He quickly got to work & you managed to fly through the line of customers waiting to be served, throughout the day you showed him how to use the till, the coffee machine & most importantly how to prepare your coffee. He excelled in all areas & it only reminded you how wasted he was under Buckyâs employment, if anything came out of this whole mess it was the determination to set him up on a better path, one that included attending MIT & fulfilling his potential.
You ended the day dead on your feet, was it a good thing you didnât have any spare capacity to be miserable about what transpired? Sure, but not dealing with it wouldnât be the best idea, youâd have to face it sometime. Peter left with the usual surplus stock & told you heâd be there bright & early in the morning, he had spent the day checking on you but not overbearingly so, like he was a concerned friend rather than mother hen.
Instead of going home, you decided to stay upstairs in your fatherâs old apartment, with the amount of work needed to be done to prepare for the next day it would be a pointless endeavour to trek back to your apartment in the small hours of the morning just to crash & then come straight back, so you figured you may as well face one of your daemons whilst avoiding the other.
The melancholy hit you as soon as you crossed the threshold of the upstairs apartment, if you closed your eyes & inhaled strongly enough you could still smell faint hints of your fatherâs cologne, but visually he was everywhere, the shelves filled with countless recipes books, boxes sat full of old invoices waiting to be shredded, next to them records stacked high with the old record player, you had to stop yourself welling up at the memories of him twirling you around the floor to Sinatra in your little tutu after your weekly ballet class when you were 6.
You had been avoiding facing the task of clearing out the apartment for years, not long after your father died you hired a cleaner to come upstairs once a month & freshen up the place until you could decide what to do with it, you were thanking your lucky stars that you didnât have to deal with any dust or eight legged friends during the night.
Whenever the subject of letting out the space above the bakery was mentioned it felt as though a dark cloud was looming over you, avoiding problems was your specialist subject, so not going home to face the Mob Boss potentially waiting for you was completely within your remit. You may be swapping one problem for another but hey, at least you were finally forced to deal with the longest standing issue.
In the days that followed there was no sign of the Mob Boss physically, but gifts started to arrive the morning after & never seem to end, boxes in every size imaginable were being delivered at regular intervals, the temptation to open them great but your self-preservation overruled your curious mind & so all remained unopened in your office except for the bouquet of flowers & notes that accompanied each surprise. Those were moved to the apartment upstairs & you would end every evening in some sort of masochistic self-sabotage by reading them.
The first one was a simple hand-written note detailing that he would be stopping by when he could & that he was having to deal with an urgent matter, after that, each note was a handwritten poem that pertained to the situation, he signed off each one âYours Jamesâ & each time you forced yourself to picture those girls on his lap, you werenât his, he wasnât yours.
Bucky was stuck between a rock & a hard place, he was desperate to visit you as soon as he could, but having been so distracted with all-consuming thoughts of you for the past few weeks, the leader of his main rival had sent Rumlow & his band of merry men to wreak havoc on the city in a bit to oust him from some of the territories he held.
Reports had begun to echo of masked men terrorising a neighbourhood in Harlem, women being harassed in Queens, then one of his warehouses was hit & he didnât need any more confirmation as to who carried out the operation as he stood looking at the 10 ft six tentacled calling card spray painted on one of the surviving walls, he had to admit the artistic flair was impressive, but completely idiotic.
Ever since, he had been spending night after night dealing with the guys his men caught, getting more & more incensed that his focus from fixing things between you was being stolen, but he never failed to stop by the bakery at some point every day to watch you through the windows, his guilt rising every night you were there until the early hours baking before you would head upstairs to sleep. You hadnât once returned to your apartment since the night he fucked up, Peter gave him regular updates on how you were coping, he noticed the lack of personal updates & how business he kept it all, admiring the young manâs apparent loyalty to you.
You had just received the daily bouquet of roses along with another note & small velvet box, the hoard of gifts sat in your office suffocating you with every addition, touching the exposed nerve you were fighting each day. It felt like you were drowning in your surroundings, trapped under the continuous wave of betrayal & anger when you couldnât leave the place, having the constant reminder of it sat in your office everyday brought you to the brink of letting it consume you. The latest delivery made you snap, it needed to stop, finding an old archiving box you swiftly assembled it & gathered all the unopened gifts, somehow managing to fit them all in like puzzle pieces until the lid could be secured on top. After scribbling a note & taping it on top you asked Peter to drop it off at Buckyâs office once he had made the usual deliveries.
âMy pride, self-worth & self-respect cannot be bought by you or anyone else. Whilst I appreciate the kindness & generosity you have shown me it is ultimately not necessary, you owe me nothing.â
âYouâve not been billing me Bunny.â
You froze, the deep voice you both missed & dreaded hearing, cursing yourself for not locking up after Peter had left, your pulse picked up & you tried to steady your breathing. You had a feeling that poking the bear would incite a visit, whether you secretly hoped it or not remained to be seen.
You span to face him, avoiding looking directly in his eyes, âI decided to end our agreement, I will reimburse Peterâs wages for helping out so if you let me know who to contact I will request an invoice.â
âDonât worry about it. Youâre still paying Yelena I take it?â
You continued with your batch of crossiants to keep your hands busy & to stop you looking at him for too long, your resolve faltered the minute you heard him, âYes.â
âWell Iâve got her working with Nat on some urgent business so consider it a swap.â
Your heart sank, hoping to all that is holy that she was ok, he could read the concern on your face from your brows furrowing & you biting your lip.
âDonât worry sheâs perfectly safe, weâve been having trouble in some neighbourhoods & Iâve got them helping with the clean up & anyone that needs help.â
You let out a deep breath, internally debating texting her to check up on her, you were still so mad at her but not at the potential cost to her life if she was getting caught up in the Mob.
âNow that business is taken care of, I wanted to talk about us.â
Your eyes shot up to meet his, âThere is no us to talk about James.â
âOh no, youâre not getting away from this sweetheart, we need to talk about what happened.â
Shrugging, again you focused on the rolling the dough on the countertop, âWhy, itâs pointless, you made a decision, thatâs fine, good for you, done.â
âShout at me Bunny, I deserve it.â
You half chuckled at his demand, âNo, you donât. We werenât exclusive, so you can do what you like.â
âNatasha set me up.â
âI know that & whilst yes itâs a shitty thing for her to do she proved that she was right about you, so Iâm glad I now know & donât have any vested interest in this ⊠yet,â it stung him, he was all in the minute he set eyes on you.
âNo, sheâs not right, Iâm a good man, I can be good for you if youâll let me.â He followed you out to the front of the shop, you needed a coffee after this conversation, you were already behind on your prep & this was taking up too much of your time.
âThatâs the thing, I donât think you will be, youâre head of the Mob Bucky, you live a dangerous life, mine is simple & peaceful. Since knowing you Iâve had my hopes dashed yet again & been let down by a man & not only that betrayed by someone I trusted.â
âIâll show you youâre wrong & show you that I am more than just what I was born into, our life can be peaceful, Iâll prove it to you.â
âIf you want to prove yourself to be a good man, pay for Peterâs tuition to MIT, donât let him get caught up in the Mob & waste his potential, Iâll work out a way to cover his living costs so he doesnât have to work for you at any point when heâs studying.â
âConsider them both covered Bunny, anything else?â
âReturn the gifts & donate the money to the Childrenâs hospital.â
âDone. Anything else?â
You thought for a moment trying not to smile at how willing to appease you he was, ânope.â
The silence hung in the air, the tension thick & unmoveable, an impasse, you didnât want to encourage him to stay but you werenât sure you wanted him to leave, you needed you head to overrule your stupid weak for a gorgeous man heart.
You took a long look at him having avoided anything more than a glance at him to this point, his face was bruised & scuffed, his lip split & you almost wanted to reach out to make sure he was ok, to soothe those tender areas with your lips, instead, your head finally kicked in & you left him standing in the bakery returning to your prep with an instruction you hoped he listened to. âTake care of yourself please.â
The tension in your muscles finally dissipating when you heard the bell ring signifying he had left, you were half way through letting out a relieved breath when he turned around & stormed back in, you were surprised the glass didnât shatter at the force in which he yanked the door open.
âNo.â
You were dumbfounded, âNo, you wonât look after yourself?â
âNo, I wonât back down on this, on us.â He was stood in front of you in three strides, it would be intimidating if you knew you didnât hold the power in this exchange.
âIâve told you, youâre free to do whatever with whomever, I shouldnât have got caught up in it, we had two great dates, thatâs it. There is no us, there never was.â
âBut there is an us. You can pretend to yourself Sugar, but you canât look me in the eye & say there is no us. We both feel it.â
That damn pet name.
You finally looked him in the eyes, maybe dismissing your hurt feelings by telling yourself he technically didnât do anything wrong was just a lie to stop you admitting how much you wanted it to work with him, that he was all you had thought of since the second you met him & you felt an intangible pull towards him like you had a connection you couldnât explain. âThen why do it?â
âBecause Iâm an idiot, I know how I feel about you, they donât. Nor do I want them to know how deep those feeling go having not known you for long, so yes, I let them goad me into make a bad decision, to not be soft in any way, to make it look like Iâm the Mob Boss Iâm expected to be.â
âThis is the thing Bucky.â hearing you not call him James felt like needles in his bones, it was so cold & devoid of your usual warmth. âYou owe me no loyalty, so you didnât do anything wrong, at no point did we agree that there was no one else & whilst I know it was set up by Natasha, you still did it.â
âBunny.â
âNo, donât Bunny me, I donât care why, as a grown man you choose to be led by others when you are supposed to be their leader. If you want to live your life like you are, then thatâs fine, Iâm happy for you but itâs not a life for me, I got too carried away with the gifts & flowers & you acting like a decent human being to see that the chaos of your existence isnât for me. I want a peaceful life filled with love, safety & security, I donât want to wonder where my partner is, if heâs dead in a ditch because he was born into a dangerous life or between someoneâs legs because he didnât want to admit to the world he has feelings for someone other than himself.â
âI told you, that wonât ever happen again.â
âBut how do I know that? When you fell so easily at the first fucking hurdle, the first fucking time someone mentioned that youâd gone soft & you have two women on your lap an hour later.â You couldnât stop your voice rising or the way it came out so brokenly.
His expression was darker than youâd seen it before like it pained him to admit out loud, âI canât let anyone know that you are my weakness, they will use it against me.â
âTheyâre your friends.â
âAnd you found out what friendship means to some people, yes some I trust with my life, but I wouldnât trust any of them with yours.â
You shook your head at the bleakness of his statement, âSo not letting anyone know about me, means it will eventually happen again.â
âIâd shout it from the fucking roof tops that someone like you was giving me the time of day, but this is for your safety Bunny, you canât get hurt because of me, I wonât let that happen & whilst yes, I would lay down my life to keep you safe Iâd rather not risk anyone knowing about you to eliminate any risk.â
You let out a deep sigh, âThis will be easy then, forget you ever met me & leave me in peace Bucky.â
His jaw clenched at you using his nickname again, you turned you back on him to walk away, hoping he would get the hint this time, but of course he didnât & reached out to spin you back around.
âI think you forget who youâre talking to sometimes Sugar.â The depth of his voice & the darkness in his eyes told you you were talking to the mob boss now, not the James you had come to know, the way his brows dropped, stalking you as you shuffled back blindly until your back hit the counter. Trapped between the cold steel pressing against your skin & his warm body turned you on more than you care to admit, he grasped your chin in his hand to force your eyes to meet his.
âYouâve told me what you want & I can offer you all that, I wonât fuck up again, I will be the love of your life Sugar, because I know youâre mine.â His pinkie finger slowly stroked your cheek & you were fighting yourself not to flutter your eyes at the contact. âDonât ask me how, I know itâs only been two dates, but my ma always used to tell me when you find them you know & I guess she was right.â
He leaned in placing his lips on top of yours gently, his iron grip held you tight, the danger in his eyes simmering but still you made no move to get away from him, âIâm a man who knows what he wants, I donât want two cheap flits only after some money & glory, I want you, the woman who holds my entire heart in her hands.â
Your breath hitched at his words & you felt yourself getting lost in his crystal blue eyes, another kiss, firmer this time paired with pressing his entire body against yours, âI always get what I want. It may take months, hell, you can make me wait years, but you will me mine. Iâll show you who I am, the real me, Bunny. You & I are inescapable, inevitable.â
Your heart felt like it was beating a mile a minute as he reached into the inside pocket of his jacket, you could picture most people having being so curt to a mob boss expecting a gun to be retrieved & threatened with it, but instead the emerald necklace you returned to him hung from his fingers, he reached out for your hand, prying your palm open with his strong digits & dropped the pendant into your grasp before he abruptly turned around & left, leaving you in a state of seething anger & an insurmountable desperation for more of him.

"Otters and Picnics" (Wanda Maximoff/ Reader/ Yelena Belova)
Hi everyone!
After an extremely severe case of writer's block and motivation block, I present you with more Wanda/ Yelena/ reader content! I hope you all enjoy!
Summary: Reader shares a complicated history with Wanda. What will happen when Natasha introduces her sister to the problem? Who will reader end up with?
After aimlessly wandering around the compound for the better part of an hour, you let out a frustrated groan. Your mind refused to stop. Stop long enough to give you time to gather your thoughts. Or to give you time to find answers. Even to be granted a single ounce of reprieve from the same chaos that had infiltrated your mind since all this madness had begun.
All that kept looping relentlessly in your mind was how your poor decisions led to this chaos, in your life, your mind⊠your heart. Which brought chaos to the two women who had you wrapped around their fingers. The women who had wedged their way into your soul so deeply you werenât sure how youâd ever get them out.
You werenât sure you wanted to.
âY/n! There you are. Iâve been looking for you all day.â The voice that broke through your thoughts startled you, causing you to turn around rapidly, practically crashing into a quickly approaching Steve Rogers.
His expression was serious, and it made your stomach turn. Based on the way your day was going, you could only imagine more chaos awaited you. âWell, you found me, Capsicle. How can I be of service?â
The look in his eyes didnât falter in the slightest which only increased your worry. Steve usually shook his head at your antics and smiled. Today he gave nothing. âI was hoping we could have a word. Thereâs a serious matter I wanted to speak to you about before opening it up to anyone else.â
All you could manage was a weak nod, any trace of sarcasm dying on your lips. Steve gestured for you to follow him and the further you walked, the more your body filled with dread.
An hour later, you made your way out of the conference room, Steve's words adding to the already endless chaos in your mind. Each word rang so prominently in your mind that you almost failed to notice the time. Almost. Your eyes widened when you saw you had just under an hour to meet Wanda at the location of your first date and you were still in the clothes you had gotten drunk in the night before.
The time crunch thankfully took precedence for a brief moment and your mind quieted down as you rushed to become a semi-presentable human being once again and not the posterchild for the aftermath of too much alcohol.
By the time you were done, you were left with ten minutes to spare which would give you just enough time to walk to Shakespeareâs Garden and not sprint like you thought you would have to for a moment.
Perhaps the leisurely stroll you gave yourself wasnât the optimal choice because when you finally made it to the location, you could barely process the fairy lights that set the path with a dream-like glow. All you could focus on was the gloom radiating off of Wanda that seemed to darken everything around her.
On weary legs, you made your way over to her. âWanda?â You called out.
Her head shot up and her eyes widened slightly in surprise, âY/n.â She breathed out. âI thought you werenât going to come.â
You tilted your head slightly. âIâm only ten minutes late.â You replied easily, âYou couldnât have given up all hope yet, right?â
Her eyes never drifted from yours. The intensity of her gaze made you want to cower away. âI⊠Wasnât sure.â She finally admitted. âItâs just thatâŠâ
âWhat?â You probed.
Wanda pulled her lower lip between her teeth for a moment as she seemed to contemplate your question. âWhen we first met, I remember I asked you why you were always early to everything, and you told me-â
The memory flashed through your mind, of the days before the romance even began. The days of something unforgettable budding under the surface, you just didnât know what it was yet. Or how powerful it would be.
âIf Iâm ever late something has gone horribly wrong.â You finished.
There was a brief pause as Wanda nodded. âOr that you didnât care about the situation.â She swallowed thickly. âI guess I know which category I fall into.â
Guilt began to bubble in your chest as you looked around at the scene Wanda had set up. The fairy lights she strung along the path leading up to where she stood, the wicker basket filled with fruits and bread, the soft gray quilted blanket, the empty wine bottle filled with daisies. An exact replica of your first date. Down to container of oatmeal cookies she had off to the side.
On a whim, you reached out and took Wandaâs hand in your own. A bid of comfort. It was impossible to be dismissive to this Wanda.
This was the Wanda you had fallen in love with. All the defenses you built to keep her out the last few months trembled precariously at her reappearance. âWandaâŠâ You began softly. The tone tasting foreign on your tongue after spending so longing becoming familiar in a tone of indifference.
A quiet sniffle filled the tense air between you both. âItâs okay, Y/n. I get it. I canât say I donât deserve it after, well⊠everything.â
You sighed quietly, âWanda, itâs not that I donât care. I could never not care about you. Iâve cared about you even when I wanted to hate you. At this point I think Iâve accepted that Iâm going to care about you for the rest of my life.â The admittance slipped out easily because it was honest.
âThatâs not as comforting as you think it is.â Wanda quietly replied, a sad smile on her lips.
A grimace overtook your features, âBut it comforted you a little?â You added in a playful tone, hoping to lighten the atmosphere. Wandaâs smile brightened ever so slightly, and she nodded. âI was late because something came up.â You confessed.
The other womanâs eyes sparked with curiosity. âWhat came up?â
As soon as the question fell from her lips, you could feel all your defenses rise again. âThatâs not what weâre here for, Wanda.â You said quietly.
For a moment you both just stared at one another, each of you filled with questions and waiting on answers. You had been waiting longer though.
âYouâre right... Youâre right.â She finally mumbled, gesturing to the picnic blanket with her free hand. âCan we sit?â That was when you realized that her other hand was still intertwined tightly with your own. You pretended not to notice the way her face fell when you took your hand back.
Once you were both situated on the blanket, you fought away the nostalgia that was infiltrating your mind. You needed to focus on what you came for. Answers.
âOkay, letâs hear it.â You said seriously, completely ignoring the spread that she had painstakingly put together. Hunger wasnât the priority in this moment.
Wandaâs smile faltered. âOkay,â She released a deep breath and nodded, almost as if she was gathering the courage to speak. âOkay.â She repeated.
âWell?â you prompted after several minutes of silence.
âI know, just⊠Iâm gathering my thoughts. I had this ready in my mind and now that youâre here, well⊠The stakes are much higher.â She mumbled weakly. âI think I should begin at the end.â
Your brows furrowed in confusion. âThe end?â
Wanda nodded. âThe end of our relationship.â Your chest still clenched at the mention of the demise you never saw coming. âI thought I was doing it for you.â
âYou broke up with me⊠For me?â
Again, the other woman nodded her head. âIt sounds ridiculous, but thatâs what I thought I was doing⊠I think in the end all I managed to do was hurt you more.â
A heavy breath escaped your nostrils as you tried to wrap your mind around the words that you still found so cryptic. âWanda, please, just say whatever it is.â
âA few weeks before I broke up with you, when I caused the building to collapse, do you remember that?â You nodded; you couldnât forget that mission. You remember the dark place she went to when she found out a family was injured from the event. âYou always told me to never look at the media, to ignore what they were saying, but I couldnât... They hated me, Y/n. I was a monster in their eyes.â
You remained silent, finding yourself thrown back into the memory of that time of your life. Of how Wanda had caved in on herself, pushed you away no matter how hard you tried to reach her.
âYou had always been so careful of keeping your identity to yourself, helping the greater good in silence. You were adored even if they had no idea who you were. I was terrified that I would just drag you down. Terrified I wasnât worthy of you.â A heavy breath fell from her lips, her words becoming quieter and quivering ever so slightly. âSo, I knew I had to let you go. You were â are â the only person I care about, the only person that I love. I thought that letting you go would protect you. If I was what the public believed I was then I wanted to protect you from myself.â
The knowledge made your stomach turn yet brought about so many more questions. âThatâs why you ignored me?â She nodded.
Wanda winced. âThere was something else. I knew that if you saw me with Vision, youâd stay away. If I pretended I didnât love you, if I became what you hated, youâd stay away⊠I needed you to want to stay away. It was getting impossible to stay away from you on my own when you were all I could think about. Everyday.â
A part of you almost didnât want to believe her. âYou used him.â You shook your head. âYou made me think you loved him all along.â
âI cared about Vision, I did. As a teammate⊠Then I got sent on missions with him⊠and I saw how the public adored him. I overheard Steve talking to Tony about how pairing me with him worked to my advantage. Worked towards gaining the publicâs trust, so⊠I took the chance. Everyone hated me, Y/n. I thought if I could pull my image out of the gutter then maybe, just maybe, one day Iâd be worthy of being with you again.â
You shook your head slightly, your gaze falling to your lap. âThat wasnât your choice to make alone, Wanda. Itâs not fair.â You muttered. âDo you realize that you tore my heart apart?â
A shaky breath fell from her lips once again. âI know, Y/n. I know, but I wasnât thinking clearly and I-⊠I was scared." She swalled thickly. "Everything had fallen apart so quickly. I thought eventually you'd have to chose between loving me or your image.â
âSo, you made the decision for me.â You muttered with a shake of your head. âYou wanted to push me away, yet you came back... That day I took the risk to save Natasha, you took a part of me back. What changed?â
From the corner of your eye, you could see Wanda begin to fidget with the quilt beneath her fingers. âI was scared. I thought I could have lost you forever that day. I knew I couldnât stay away anymore.â The words were soft, so soft you practically missed them in the bustle of the busy New York City air. âI didnât know how to let you go when I still loved you.â
You paused briefly to let her words wash over you. âSo that night, when weâŠâ
âI offered friends with benefits. I could see the resentment in your eyes each time you looked at me and I knew you wouldnât take me back, not like before. I figured having some of you was better than having none of you.â You didnât need to look to feel her eyes still on you. âI didnât know how to express my feelings anymore after I kept making mistakes, but⊠I still love you, Y/n. I always will.â
There it was. The words you had wanted to hear for so long, yet you still couldnât help but dread them. Now they were out in the open. There was no going back. Just forward.
When you didnât manage a reply, Wanda began shifting nervously. âDo you still love me?â There was a brief pause. âOr am I too late?â
âItâs not that simple anymore, Wanda.â You muttered with a shake of your head.
You finally lifted your gaze to see Wandaâs eyes shining slightly with unshed tears. âBecause of Yelena.â
It wasnât a question. She knew. She had known from the moment you had laid eyes on the other woman.
âI told her I was falling for her, but that was a lie.â You took a steadying breath as you came to terms with the emotions in your heart. âIâm in love with her⊠But that also doesnât mean my heart ever learned how to stop being in love with you.â
Wanda ducked her head slightly, her hair covering her expression like a curtain. âWhat does that mean then?â
There was only one real choice left. The only way you knew youâd be able to untangle the complicated knots your heart was tied in. âIt means I havenât been fair to either of you. I-⊠I donât even know if Yelena wants me, but to continue to pursue either of you when I feel this way? When I love you both? It would be wrong. It wouldnât be me showing love for either of you.â You nodded slightly. âIâm done being selfish.â
A confused smile spread across Wandaâs lips as she contemplated your words. âSo... What does that mean?â She repeated.
âIt means Iâm going to date Natasha.â You replied back sarcastically, laughing when Wanda smacked your shoulder in protest. âIt means Iâd like to work on rebuilding the foundation of what we were. Our friendship had always been so strong and after the break-up I think we set fire to that. Iâd like to remedy that. Remedy that while I sort myself out.â
The smile on Wandaâs lips softened. âIâd like that.â
âI wonât ask you to wait for me. That wouldnât be fair, but I just want you to know where Iâm coming from. Complete honesty from now on.â You paused briefly. âAnd no more sex, though that might be harder to adjust to.â You joked playfully.
Again, Wanda smacked your shoulder. âJerk.â A short laugh fell from her lips and the sound was music to your ears as the tension around you both seemed to ease now that each of your truths was out in the open. âI will though.â
âWhat?â you questioned with a curious tilt of your head.
âI will wait for you.â Wanda confessed softly. âIf itâs days, weeks, months, years⊠It doesnât matter. I will wait for you because my heart canât love anyone else.â
You sighed. âWandaâŠâ
Before you could continue, she rushed on. âThereâs no pressure to reply, I just needed you to know. Iâm ready to rebuild my friendship with you if that's what you want⊠And hopefully regain your trust.â
You offered Wanda a small smile which she easily returned. âWe have a lot of work to do, but nothing is impossible.â You held out your hand. âFriends?â
Wanda easily took your hand and gently shook it. âFriends.â She confirmed.
For the first time in a long time, there was the formerly familiar ease in talking to Wanda again. No pressures of words left unsaid or pushing away emotions. With everything out in the open, there was comfort. Comfort that she used to bring you in the past and you couldnât help but relish in it as the night wore on, the hours flying by.
___________________
Despite finding a balance in your mind, in your situation, that night you couldnât sleep. The talk with Steve coming back in full force and you didnât feel properly prepared to speak to anyone about it, so you decided to silently suffer through it.
What plagued your mind more though wasnât the precarious situation on your horizon. No. That surprisingly weighed less on you than what your mind remained focused on.
Yelena.
Having managed to talk your situation out with Wanda, you wanted â needed â to talk to Yelena. To clarify what was going on. To apologize for the chaos you had unknowingly thrown her into. To explain that what you had said wasnât a spur of the moment decision, that it wasnât merely drunken thoughts. It was the truth. You needed her to know everything. There had never been any barriers with Yelena, and you didnât intent to start building any. Not now.
Not ever.
All you were waiting for was the first break of day, so you could finally do what you should have done from the beginning. Right your wrongs. You were never faultless, and you couldnât go about your day â your life â allowing Yelena to think that she was just a consolation because you couldnât have Wanda. You refused to let her suffer through confusion of your own doing. Especially not when she meant so much to you already.
Sometimes the only way to preserve the ones you wanted in your life was to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. Looking at the bigger picture, you couldnât help the mounting guilt you felt with the damage you created. You refused to play games with someone who had never shown you anything but care. Someone who you connected with from the very beginning.
With this in mind, you steeled your nerves and mustered a weak knock on the door of Yelenaâs room. After a few minutes, the door swung open, and your heart leapt into your throat at the sight.
âYou were right.â The words leapt from your lips and into the open air, desperate to make it to Yelena, to close this gap you felt building between you.
That probably wasnât a good place to start.
Yelenaâs eyes widened slightly at the suddenness of your words. âWhat?â
You cursed inwardly as you quickly composed yourself. âI mean⊠Do you want to go to the aquarium?â you asked with a nervous smile.
Again, Yelena stared at you, her mouth opening and closing in confusion. âAnd I repeat⊠What?â She squinted her eyes at you. âAre you on drugs?â
You swatted her hand away when she attempted to place it on your forehead. âNo, Yelena, stop. I just⊠I remember the first time I went to one after spending my life trapped with Enclave. It was nice⊠I donât know, I just thought maybe youâd never been, and I wanted you to have the experience. If you want to.â You rambled nervously. âI understand if you donât though. If not, we can just talk. I mean, Iâd like to talk to you about something if thatâs okay, but I also wanted to spend the day with you, if that's something you'd be interested in."
A ghost of a smile began forming on Yelenaâs lips as she placed a hand over your mouth. âDo you always talk this much?â Since your mouth was covered all you could offer was a shrug. The amusement in her eyes made you practically want to sigh with relief. âI donât even know how you managed to breath at the rate you were going.â
When she failed to take her hand off your mouth, you licked a broad stripe up her palm, making her groan in annoyance. âYouâre a child.â She muttered with a shake of her head, wiping her hands on the fabric of her jeans.
You smirked, feeling lighter as you both fell into the comfort that had always existed between you. âYet Iâm still your favorite person.â You added cockily.
âYou mean least favorite.â Yelena grumbled.
There was a lightness as she looked at you and you couldnât help but smile at her. âSo?â
âSo what?â
You bounced lightly on the balls of your feet. âDo you want to go to the aquarium with me?â
Yelena pretended to think over the question. âIâll go⊠On one condition.â
The answer made you squint your eyes cautiously. âWhatâs the condition?â
A smirk spread across Yelenaâs lips and even if she was purposely trying to annoy you, you couldnât help but find it so attractive. âYou have to tell me the grand story of how you got banned from the Canadian donut shop.â
You groaned and Yelena laughed. âFine, fine.â You forfeited. âGo grab your coat and letâs go.â Yelena winked and grabbed her coat; within minutes you were both off.
âSo, it all began with Natasha and several bottles of Russian vodkaâŠâ
________________
The ease with Yelena remained throughout the day, a day filled with sarcastic comments and quick-witted banter. Nothing else existed outside of Yelena. Not any confused feelings, troubled past, or Avenger dilemmas.
All that existed was her and you couldnât be more relieved.
As you were wrapping up the day, you both wandered past the otter exhibit. âLook, itâs you when we were on mission.â You called out to Yelena, pointing to the two otters cuddling in the water.
Yelena glared at you. âI told you to if you ever mentioned that again I would smother you in your sleep.â She mumbled darkly with a menacing point of her finger. She quickened her pace so she could walk ahead of you. âDonât say I didnât warn you.â She called over her shoulder in a sing-song voice.
You laughed as you sped up slightly to catch up to her. âAre you proposing we do some... nighttime wrestling?â You joked with a waggle of your eyebrows.
âYou really have a death wish.â Yelena leveled you with an unamused stare and you just smiled innocently back at her.
After a few minutes of staring at one another her façade broke as a short chuckle fell from her lips.
âI mean, who would save you if I wasn't around?â You teased.
Yelena scoffed. âI donât need you to save me. I recall you almost bleeding to death on the mission.â
âTouchĂ©.â You grumbled as you both approached the car. âIn my defense, the planâs priority was protecting you and Iâd say I certainly achieved that.â
You paused to open Yelenaâs door and even though she shook her head, you saw a faint blush dust her cheeks. âStill a poorly thought-out plan. Pridurok.â Yelena responded when you got behind the wheel and began the drive back to the compound.
âIt got us out of there in one piece, didnât it?â You questioned pointedly as you focused on the road before you. âUmnik.*â (*smartass)
The Russian word caught Yelenaâs attention as she shifted in her seat to look at you. âWho taught you that?â Before you could reply, Yelena shook her head. âNatasha, Iâm sure.â
You chuckled. âI had to come up with my own term of endearment for you, didnât I?â You teased.
âDoesnât change anything, Pridurok.â Yelena huffed as she leaned further back in her seat.
Again, you couldnât help but laugh. âStop flirting with me, umnik!â All you received was a playful glare in response to your teasing. âAnyway, admit it or not, my plan saved us.â
Yelena made a face. âIâd say that my plan did far more saving than yours did.â A small smirk played on her lips cockily. âLike I said, PDA makes people very uncomfortable.â
You coughed awkwardly. âWell... I wonât complain about that portion of the plan thatâs for sure.â Suddenly your thoughts were flooded with delirious flashbacks of Yelena pressed tightly to you, the music shaking the walls around you and her lips moving slowly against your own.
âY/n!â
You blinked rapidly, focusing back on the world around you. âHuh?â
Yelena laughed. âI knew I was good; I didnât know I was that good." She nudged you lightly over the center console. "Iâve been trying to get your attention.â
âAlright, alright. Thatâs enough.â You grumbled. âWhat did you want?â
As soon as the words fell from your lips, Yelenaâs expression became serious once again. âEarlier, when I opened the door, you said I was right. What were you talking about?â There was a brief pause. âI mean, I know Iâm right about a lot of things, so youâll have to be more specific.â She added, clearly trying to lighten the mood.
Flexing your hands slightly on the steering wheel, you tried to gather your thoughts. âAre you sure you donât want to wait to have this conversation for when we get back to the compound?â
Out of the corner of your eye you could see Yelena shake her head. âYou mean where Stark has microphones all over the compound and my sister eaves drops every conversation? No thank you.â
âYou know, this is Starkâs car, so by that logicâŠâ
âY/n.â Yelena interrupted in a stern tone.
You coughed. âRight. Okay, we can do this here.â You mumbled nervously, fixing your gaze on the stretch of road before you, finding it easier to speak without acknowledging the intensity of her gaze on you. âWhether I knew it or not, I did have plans and yes, you didnât fit into them. You were right about that.â
There was a heavy silence for a moment before Yelena muttered a soft, âOh.â Hurt clearly lacing the word.
âAnd I did keep running back to Wanda.â You took a deep breath, your grip tightening on the steering wheel. âI wasnât being fair. To either of you. It was wrong and you deserve so much more. I want to try and be more. Iâm sorry, Yelena.â
The weight of the words lifted off your shoulders and you felt your nerves increase the longer the silence stretch. âI meant what I said though, you can wreck my plans, for you Iâd throw them all away.â Again, silence. âCan you please say something?â
From the corner of your eye, you could see Yelena shift her gaze to look out the window. âClearly youâve thought about this.â You let out a nervous chuckle and nodded. âAnd what conclusion have you come to about Maximoff? About me?â
Again, you flexed your hands on the steering wheel, something to distract you from the mounting nerves you felt. âI talked to Wanda, and we agreed to work on our friendship for now, rebuild trust. I do still love her; I donât think I ever allowed myself to fully let go even through the pain and then⊠And then you came along. You enchanted me from the very start Yelena. Thatâs another thing I meant. I am falling for you. Faster than I thought possible. More than you know.â
When Yelena didnât answer, you rushed to continue. âI want us to be friends, Yelena. If we continue this, I want you to know that youâre the only one because thatâs what you deserve. I just need to sort myself and my feelings out first. I want to give you more if this is what we were to do.â
There was no pause in her response this time. âWhat if I donât want more? Donât come in here and assume my feelings, Y/n.â You tried to ignore the way your heart clenched in your chest at Yelenaâs words. âWe are friends. We have been friends from the beginning, and we will continue to be friends now. If you need to work out your feelings for Maximoff then go do that.â
There was a sharpness to her words that made you feel as if someone had just punched you in the stomach. âFriends donât kiss friends.â You said quietly.
âThen we wonât do that anymore.â Yelena said with finality, her words were cold. You couldn't help but blame yourself for her pushing you away.
A tense silence filled the air, and you couldnât help but feel hurt by Yelenaâs words, you fought down the emotions and put on a placid expression. It was something you were good at. âOkay.â You mumbled.
âI think itâs best we give each other a bit of space for a while.â Yelena added, her words clipped and her gaze still focused out the window.
You nodded weakly. âOkay.â You repeated.
The rest of the drive was filled with a silence that made you ache internally, but you let it linger in the air between you. If space was what Yelena wanted, then you had no right to refuse her even if it was the last thing you wanted. If Yelena didn't want more, then it was your own fault for falling once again.
When you arrived back at the compound, Yelena mumbled a quick excuse for why she had to leave before rushing off ahead of you. All you could do was watch her leave and replay the conversation back in your head and wonder where exactly it was that you went wrong.
And that is all! I'm sorry about the wait. Being back at work full time has been... something else.
Anyway, I won't say much else. I think there's two more parts left, maybe three. I hope you all enjoyed! Thoughts and comments always welcome. :)
