This Week's Streams --:::------::-------------------◇--------------------::------:::--- Happy Halloween! Lots of Dark Souls this week, which I'm sure some of you all will enjoy greatly! There's also a Hardcore Minecraft stream, since you guys seemed to love the last one! --:::------::-------------------◇--------------------::------:::--- Rating YOUR Fashion Souls! Date: Monday, October 30, 2023 Game(s): Dark Souls & Elden Ring I've been playing FromSoftware games for years now, and fashion is one of the things I do the most. A suggestion by a viewer of mine (bober) was to do a vanity stream where I create and critique fashion souls! Stream Link: https://youtube.com/live/FgT6tjl8zaU?feature=share Discord Event: https://discord.com/events/727746977193787433/1168508636528656465 --:::------::-------------------◇--------------------::------:::--- Building the Halloween Mash-Up Pack in Hardcore! Date: Tuesday, October 31, 2023 Game(s): Minecraft This won't get done in one stream, but I want to start working on a recreation of the Halloween Mash-Up Pack World in my Hardcore Minecraft World to celebrate the season! We'll likely do occasional work on this throughout multiple streams, so stay tuned! That is it. We've got this within the next two streams. Also, I installed a mod that came out recently that makes the movement actually work by giving movement a radial deadzone (like every other fromsoft game) Stream Link: https://youtube.com/live/nebwrAR3NmA?feature=share Discord Event: https://discord.gg/bFVYdbZc?event=1168510638084079707 --:::------::-------------------◇--------------------::------:::--- The DeePS Addict Date: Friday, November 3, 2023 Game(s): Dark Souls III I got an idea for a Dark Souls III series of challenge runs the other day. Basically, take a bunch of RPG archetypes (Tank, DPS, Mage, Healer, Rogue, & Ranger), and do runs with them, sticking to rules to make them similar to how they'd be played in MMORPGs and the like. For the second run, I wanted to try a melee ranged DPS style character. I asked you all what weapon I should use, and you guys decided on greatswords! We must be within 30-70% equip load, and must get either 40 strength+dex or 60 strength by the end of the run! okay since folks really like my original cockroach party post i’m going to expand a bit and talk about how and why the mighty nein turned into a cockroach party.
but before we do that, i’m going to talk about mechanics on this post. warning: long post ahead.
first, let’s define terms. all adventuring parties find their own play style when it comes to combat. from my experience, these tend to fall into three broad categories that i am calling the glass cannon, the control, and the cockroach. to be clear, no one party style is better than another; the players and characters simply have different priorities and skill sets.
glass cannon: these parties are built for doing damage. that’s basically it. they do damage and hope that they kill their enemies before their enemies kill them. these parties tend to be low on support casters, healers, or both. round 4 is where things start to get really rough for these parties and chances are good that if the fight has gone on this long, someone’s at least unconscious.
control: these parties tend to go around obstacles and enemies. there are a million ways to do this; for example, these parties can regularly avoid conflicts all together via stealth or charisma or some other check. when forced into combat, they excel when they have plans or traps to spring on opponents. they struggle a bit but ultimately triumph because they have a myriad of ways to not get hit or they are able to escape and lose their pursuers.
cockroach: these parties don’t engage in combat, they endure it. their goal is to outlast their enemies via healing, support, and tanking. you hit them? joke’s on you, they don’t care. unlike their glass cannon counterparts, round 4 is where things turn around for the cockroach party. they’ve dug in and are starting to push back.
vox machina is a quintessential glass cannon party. part of that is simply down to player availability; ashley their cleric worked across the country so that made it tough for her to attend on the regular. but. the party technically still had a primary healer who could have stepped in and filled that role: keyleth. druids are pretty dang good healers and support casters, even moon druids. however. marisha and keyleth decided to instead take a dps and tank role similar to grog. this ain’t a diss either so don’t any of you all start anything, especially considering keyleth was often burning her higher slots just to get vm to different places. when keyleth was tanking in wild shape and focusing on dps, it meant that vox machina was reliant on: vex’s cure wounds (and with her being a half caster, you weren’t getting a lot of mileage of it), scanlan as the only support role, and later vax’s lay on hands for emergency healing. percy could heal himself a bit if things got really dicey, grog was taking half damage from most attacks, and the twins could hide as a bonus action or stay at range out of the way. in fact, most of vm had some method for staying at range and letting grog and keyleth tank. and this style worked for them for the most part. their biggest dangers were always the longer fights, with or without pike. longer fights meant more chances for these fragile kids to get hit and possibly drag out the fight even longer by trying to get someone up.
the ashholes from exandria unlimited is a great example of a control party. i count half of their encounters which they’ve been able to wriggle out of without killing their opponents. their liberal use of charm spells, high charisma, and just flat out out of the box thinking (they flipped a fucking crocodile!!) has saved their bacon so many times. during unavoidable combat, they have struggled a little bit, but they’re a low level party to begin with so struggle is expected. all the casters appear to be offensively geared with dariax and fearne having prepped utility on the side. even so, that control vibe still permeates the party; dorian’s most clutch move was that dissonant whispers on mister, which he cast not to harm mister but force him to move away from the rune that transformed and powered him, thus ending the combat.
and finally we have the mighty nein, the cockroach party. we’ll get into the hows and whys later, for now, cockroach parties are built on three major founding principles: action economy, mindset, and versatility. action economy is king in dnd. pcs get an action, bonus action, and reaction per turn. having turns each round is critical to a dnd party's ability to overcome the enemy and the more turns you have compared to your opponent, the better. for large parties, that is a sizable advantage over enemy monsters, which is why even low level monsters are packing multi-attacks, decent ac, and/or good solid hit points. more members means more attacks the creature(s) needs to take and focused fire adds up fast, even at low levels. for example, kylre had about 90 hp and was dead in three rounds, with fjord alone dealing 64 points of that damage. yeah. want to know why mid to high level monsters have legendary actions and resists? action economy. want to know why some silly min-max number crunchers think that cleric healing is severely under-powered? action economy. laura's assessment of healing, that it is better to damage the enemy and only heal to bring people up to make sure they get their turn, is a solid, reasonable assessment of the economy, especially when it comes to the cleric spell slot economy which I elaborated on here.
so, in light of the action economy, let's talk about the cockroach mindset. the cockroach party doesn’t ask ‘how do we beat this opponent’, it asks ‘how do we outlast this opponent.’ it’s a subtle difference in combat focus but an important one. survival of the party is the cockroach’s top priority and all members go into the encounter with that priority in mind. the players aren’t focused on the survival of their character, however, they are focused on giving their party another round to act. they give themselves room to breathe. whether that is stunning the enemy completely, whether it's lowering the enemy's attacking ability, whether it's giving a party member an extra action, whether it’s bringing someone up from unconsciousness, those methods combine with damage generation to win an encounter. cockroach parties don't rely on damage output to keep themselves safe, they rely on their own ability to survive and support their team.
which brings us to versatility. cockroach parties tend to have a wide array of skills at their disposal and aren’t afraid to use them. while they have solid support roles, casters are not the only ones who can bring utility to a party. just ask beau. just ask yasha as she flew caleb out of danger in the first lucien fight. heck, just ask orym and his swip swap battle flop. or damian and the owlbear from the darrington brigade. cockroach parties, more than control and glass cannon parties, prefer to have a wide range of options available to them. the more tricks up your sleeve, the more likely you are to have something to deal with whatever the dm throws at you. marine layer, anyone? at the same time, the party also uses this wide array to have multiple ways to handle the same problem. jester is the backup stealth scout and teleporter. fjord is the emt, able to remove and heal injured party members if caduceus or jester cannot. caleb is the backup backup cleric with polymorph. veth can also stun/incapacitate enemies with her spells. caduceus is the backup backup tank and battlefield control via his shield of retribution and spirit guardians to beau and jester.
these three tricks combine into one inescapable reality: there is no one better or obvious target to take out. the entire party is one giant interlocking trap; break one and the others will reinforce the weak point and make you pay for the effort.
(incidentally, the cockroach approach is so ingrained in the cast that the vm side of the battle royale didn’t play with the urgency the vm playbook requires and that, more than anything, screwed them over. but that’s a different post.)
tune in next time for a break down of how, when, and why the nein went from glass cannon to cockroach because it is a fascinating ride.

You always write mood shifts SO WELL. The sexy to immediate oh shit is so goooood.
Gotta love the possessive wade blowing smoke at everyone in warning.
I missed the brute nickname. You slip brat in there enough I don't miss it AS much but brute also has a special place in my heart.
Wade hiding away for so long and being uncomfortable around people is kinda how I'm going to feel after all this pandemic stuff. I have gone out a little but I definitely try to time it for the less amount of people possible. So wade I feel you.
Wade feeling so free running up the mountain makes me want to do that too. At 11:30 at night and I don't live near a mountain or hill at all. Unless I want to climb the local exercise stairs which I most certainly do NOT ha. Somehow seems less adventurous.
The scene wade comes back to breaks my heart OMG.
Sometimes with all your AU building I forget wade is Deadpool because you weave him into your own and then wade kills and it's just like. Oh yaAAAAA. Like obviously here he is a dragon and has killed, but still.
The visual of wade running and his body wanting to shift is really cool to imagine. Like I know it's not quite the aesthetic but I kinda imagine a weird glitch type thing and I dig it. Not at all in tune with this story vibe but.
Peter crashing a teapot into someone's face IMMEDIATELY reminded me of that word Drabble that's kind of infamous of wade getting excited when Peter asks for one of his guns thinking he will use it but instead throws it at a bad guy.
Wade landing though is the hottest thing ever OH.
And that TAIL.
CLAWS.
THEM FANGS.
Wade wanting to flee from peter once everything is done I CAN'T.
AHHH THE CUPPING OF THE CHEEKS THE FOREHEAD TOUCH.
Man I will always love the beauty and the beast come into the light line. Whether it was intentional for this or not it holds.
The sexy part almost lasted longer before the mood shift, I literally had to make myself pull it back like “ok there’s more important things in this chapter then exactly how Nat thanks her wife for keeping things cool” but like... is there? IS THERE more important things??
Wade blowing smoke makes me laugh and using it as the chance for Peter to call him a brute was EXCELLENT. I love Spideypool nicknames.
Re: forgetting Wade is Deadpool-- I feel like he stays pretty true to DP in my ABO Au’s, but when we start talking magic and shifts it’s harder to keep that? Like I love him so much as a dragon (or as the Beast!) but some of the DP characteristics like the motormouth and endless sarcasm just don’t fit with that version of the character? I tend to use the characters like actors-- like, yes. Chris Evans is Captain America and also several other characters but we all see him as playing some version of Steve, right? Same with RDJ? That’s how I feel about my fan fics. Like, yes its Wade Wilson in this story but its more like... Wade Wilson playing This Character, like it would be Ryan Reynolds playing Wade and then playing the guy in The Proposal which is still basically Wade Wilson but just not quite? Idk. I get pretty frequent complaints about my characterization for SP and I just tell them “it’s NCTS verse characterization, like it or leave it” lol
Yeah, I realize we’d talked about more of an emphasis on Wade’s physical shifting and potentially a tail kink thing but the way the story went, it just didn’t fit in. I DID want to make sure he tail whipped the shit out of someone though lol
WADE SHIFTING-- I kept imagining the Hulk/Bruce Banner from the 2004 version or even the Avengers 2012, where we see Bruce literally rippling and breaking as he morphs and it’s painful but sort of a release all at the same time and then he just unleashes? That’s what I kept picturing with Wade.
Peter defending himself-- I did not want him to go quietly into that dark night lol Spidey canon wise is pretty anti violence, he’d rather web them up and leave then actually hurt a baddie, and as a healer of course, Peter doesn’t want to hurt but that doesn’t mean he’s not CAPABLE of it. Stabbing someone to death and then permanently maiming someone else with his little teapot? We love a ballsy healer.

Moira in OWL
Tumblr media
Moira is an interesting hero, she brings a versatile support to the Overwatch roster. In the hands of a skilled player, Moira's kit can be a game changer. Today, I want to look at Moira in the pro scene as we've seen in the OWL Preseason.
Moira saw some play during the OWL Preseason. While not becoming a staple support she seemed to be blizzard's first out of the gate viable hero. Moira seems to have evaded the steep learning curve of Ana and lack of utility of Orisa. Moira's kit is immediately useful with many comps but she seems best suited for deathball. Her biotic orbs are great at providing sustained damage or healing during a team fight. Moira has the interesting mechanic of having her healing tied directly to her damage. Her healing beam is charged by doing damage with her biotic grasp. This mechanic forces Moira players to have a rather robust decision making ability as to their healing usage. Boasting an impressive 80 heals per second, Moira provides solid sustain to compositions that stay together. Teams that opt for more mobility and thus are more spread apart cause trouble for Moira. In the preseason we saw Moira play from two teams in particular, Dallas Fuel and San Francisco Shock.
Dallas is lucky to have two players that can play Moira extremely well, Chipshajen and Custa. Chips being the veteran from envy seems to have a better hold of the hero in terms of team chemistry and communication. Contradicting my previous statement, Chips made Moira viable for a more dive based composition. Moira's fade ability gives her high mobility and chips showed excellent use of it on ilios vs Mayhem. Using the fade to rotate in and out of fights from Frontline to backline, gave chips the ability to provide dynamic healing to his entire team. Chips experience in all manner of comps allowed him to really push the envelope of what can be done with Moira. Custa on the other hand played Moira is the more static, deathball comp. Custa showed the sustain that Moira can provide for comps that revolve around moving as a unit. That being said, custa also showed the main downfall than can come with Moira. On junkertown vs Mayhem, Custa seemed to put more priority on damage than healing. This kind of pitfall can be tempting due to Moira's extremely versatile kit. Between the biotic orb and the biotic grasp, Moira can shell out damage on par with most of the DPS roster. This led to situations where Custa was trying to kill Tviq while Manneten was busy murdering his entire team. This can be attributed to Custa still being new to the big stage and the envy/fuel roster so I don’t expect to see it again.
The second team to break out Moira was San Francisco Shock. Sleepy, Flex Support of Shock, has made it no secret he’s a huge fan of Moira. From her healing capability to her movement, Sleepy has decided to really grind the new hero. Beginning on his stream before heading to scrims and finally to the OWL stage, Sleepy has put solid hours into fine tuning his Moira skills. San Francisco opted for a comp that was fast moving but still remained together as a cohesive unit. Sleepy seemed most comfortable on the hero in enclosed spaces, able to bounce the biotic orb for massive healing and damage. Issues seemed to arise when forced to fight in open areas where predicting the path of the biotic orb becomes much more difficult and healing becomes unreliable. Opting for the more easily predictable healing of Zenyatta in the open engagements Sleepy was able to adapt where his team needed.
All in all, Moira absolutely has a place in the pro scene. A reliable healer and deadly force in the right hands we absolutely will be seeing her more in OWL. The current niche seems to be enclosed maps making for another specialist hero. It remains to be seen what kind of crazy comps we’ll see that Moira fits in to as OWL is all about pushing the limits on what players consider possible.
