soooo i was thinking about avdol again and i feel like he has spent a lot of his life being needed for something. his entire role in stardust crusaders is functional: he provides the others with knowledge about tarot, stand powers and egypt, and the only reason he’s involved in the trip (and the narrative) is because he’s helping joseph (and i think to an extent his entire relationship with joseph is anchored in avdol's role as almost a mentor archetype)
so throwing in a bit of speculation here, and the fact that avdol is clearly driven by a strong sense of morality and duty to help those in need, i imagine that part of his self-worth is based on how useful he can be to people. it’s also visible in the way he presents himself - his entire ‘image’ as a responsible and wise individual could link to his desire to perform to the high standards he’s set himself, so that other people can trust him and rely on him.
but then polnareff comes along. unlike everyone else in avdol's life, he makes it clear from the very beginning that he doesn’t need avdol - quite the contrary. he rejects any advice or help that avdol offers (because he’s very self-reliant - or at least believes he is - and misinterprets avdol’s concern as being overbearing)
for avdol, who has spent most of his life in the role of mentor and basing his relationships around his usefulness to others, this is going to be not only frustrating but also presumably something of an existential crisis. initially it's going to be difficult to navigate a friendship (or. ummm you know. gay love !) with polnareff. because who is he if he’s not someone to be needed? how is he going to show polnareff that he cares about him if polnareff doesn’t want to rely on anyone?
the thing is - polnareff doesn’t need to need avdol. he wants him to be around simply because he enjoys his presence, and likes him as a person - not because he wants him to do something for him.
over the course of stardust crusaders, i think avdol begins to understand this. eventually he can let his guard down around polnareff, as he no longer has his image of functionality and usefulness to maintain. he's wanted rather than needed for once. because polnareff isn’t expecting anything of him: the only thing that polnareff wants from him is himself

Concept looks for Nova Hawkins in three alternate universes that me and my friend, @disneyfan50 , discuss at times.
From top to bottom:
*Nova Hawkins adventure look in Rewrite The Stars/Never Enough alternate universe, where she travels with her brother and his family, albeit not really by choice but more of a result of her constant flying her solar surfer in restricted areas getting her constantly arrested to the point of finally getting a warning of juvy if she's arrested again, which Jim will not allow to happen and so, he decided to take her under his wing on his adventures... *Nova Hawkins pirate look in Love From The Stars alternate universe, where at first, Nova had grown up as safe as possible, her brother making sure of that, but one day while her brother was visiting, enemies of him had followed and tried to kidnap Nova to get at him and while the enemies were dealt with, a fearful Jim decided for Nova's safety, decided to bring her aboard the RLS Baelstrom, into the Pleiadean Fleet, to personally keep her safe. *Nova Hawkins pirate look in a branch off alternate universe on Lia alternate universe on Chasing Stardust, where in this branch off, Nova did not grow up with her mother but instead, the father of her brother, Leland, who told Nova he rescued her from a fire that wrecked her mother's inn, but that her mother didn't make it out in time sadly, leading to her being raised by Leland alongside the crew he's fallen in with, and she questions nothing. Until they abduct a Princess of Solasar, that is.

doing the 200->225 rankup quest and. speaking of the devil
Great One: Singularity… You who hold one of the keys to the world's fate… Ruin lies in wait for you no matter which path you choose. Hide though you might in fleeting illusions of safety, you cannot avert the intermingling of your two destinies.
Great One: Your resolve to find where the sky ends is a feeble, clumsy thing… Reassure me that you can house the singularity in that infantile frame. Unleash the hidden power that flows within you!
The long night's trial has only hardened Captain's resolve to stand against the tides of calamity, even if that means doing battle with fate itself.
also...the start<333
In the midst of this sacred stillness, Vyrn's restless tail lands with a solid thwack across Captain's face. Captain startles awake.
The captain is yanked back from the brink of sleep once more. Captain peers blearily over at Lyria…who has already flopped back down amongst her pillows.
when u sleep in the same room as ur besties

Saw a comment someone made today that said So Much (for) Stardust (the song, not the whole album) is the best post hiatus song that FOB has put out so far and it got me thinking about like... While I do have personal favorites ahead of that one myself, I do think it’s arguably the best song on the album.

okay but for real. you could write a really good modern au. like high school or otherwise. you’ve talked about your college au and i’m all for it
SORRY FINALLY GETTING AROUND TO ANSWERING THESE.
I want to write that college AU so bad you have no idea. I'm actually kicking around writing a fic set in that AU once I finish the stuff I need to write - basically, I'm thinking a silly short multichapter thing following different characters over the course of one night at a house show, and of course one of those chapters will be Fugio focused lol. But also the Stardust Crusaders, who I haven't written in a hot sec, and Caejose and Jolyne's gang, which I've never written, so !!! That should be fun. If I get around to it lol.

I feel the need to make something clear, my Thursday posts, and pretty much any post I have, are plotting points for me. That means if you want me to expand or add something to the conversation, I highly encourage it. Like honestly, you would make my day. I don't know everything there is, and most definenetly don't know all of canon. I've picked up things here and there on tumblr, but this is really my only connection to the fandom outside of my own thoughts, and picking my older sisters brain who's never even read or seen a movie of descendants. So please, talk at me. Talk with me. I promise it'll be fun. Because honestly I probably have a lot more thoughts and feelings on each point and plotting spot than I'll ever be able to communicate.

Many people who claim Cinderella’s life was easier because she was conventionally more attractive tend to overlook the environment she grew up in. Even Anastasia claims this in one of the sequels. Cinderella grew up in an oppressive environment with other women who hated and abused her. How would her, what others perceive to be, beauty have helped her? Also, to take it a step further, it seems that Cinderella’s kingdom valued class over beauty. In the eyes of the royal proclamation, Cinderella wouldn’t have been eligible to come as she was, in her rags, and needed to go in a gown that would’ve been deemed suitable to present herself in at court. She had to scrap and save pieces of discarded trash to even be able to accomplish this feat, whereas Drizella and Anastasia grew up with the finest of the fine and anything their hearts could’ve desired. Thus, in the society Cinderella grew up in, Drizella and Anastasia would’ve been considered far more privileged. Cinderella’s looks would be, honestly, completely irrelevant...
I think this is why the Fairy Godmother’s gown means so much to her. It isn’t about dressing up and being beautiful- it’s about being viewed as a person in the eyes of her society. In many novelizations of the story that were produced in the 18 and 1900′s, Cinderella reverts into her ragged form on the castle steps. When the Prince asks the guards if they saw the princess he was dancing with, they claim they didn’t see anyone but some homeless orphan running about barefoot in rags. This is the same exact girl he danced with, but the change in her attire signals how differently she’s treated in her society and how she’s been treated her entire life, whereas Drizella and Anastasia have always been treated as princesses.
I think this is why it means so much to Cinderella to take it upon herself to learn how to knit and sew and why she saves the mice and birds and strings together clothing for them. She doesn’t seem to do it for Bruno or Major, but they were already “legitimatized” as household pets. The mice and birds are saved from traps, and Cinderella allows them to live against the orders of her stepmother, brings them food, and creates a sanctuary for them- and one of the main things she does is clothe them. It’s actually the first steps we see her go through when Jaq runs up to tell her of Gus’s entry in the house. That’s why it’s so cute that they repay her by remaking her late mother’s dress<3

Kevin thinks Stardust 3 is bad.
So, I was showing my friend Kevin the Stardust Chronicles series because he said he was interested, and he said Stardust 3 was the WORST one.
I can appreciate Kevin going into this franchise with an open mind, he was quite fond of the first film and seemed to enjoy the second one, but disliking the third one I feel COMPLETELY goes against everything the series has been building up.
Perhaps I can understand not liking the ending, I mean; it WAS left on an open end, but come ON. He didn't like the whole thing! It's kind of sad, honestly. I've never seen that guy so talkative over ANYTHING before. I'm a bit offended that THIS was what got him to talk.
Maybe I'll get him to rewatch it once work stops being a bitch. WHY DO I HAVE TO WORK SO MUCH? I'M A GOD DAMN LIBRARIAN. But I digress, Kevin WILL like Stardust 3. He just needs a push in the right direction.

Homemaking, gardening, and self-sufficiency resources that won't radicalize you into a hate group
Tumblr media
It seems like self-sufficiency and homemaking skills are blowing up right now. With the COVID-19 pandemic and the current economic crisis, a lot of folks, especially young people, are looking to develop skills that will help them be a little bit less dependent on our consumerist economy. And I think that's generally a good thing. I think more of us should know how to cook a meal from scratch, grow our own vegetables, and mend our own clothes. Those are good skills to have.
Unfortunately, these "self-sufficiency" skills are often used as a recruiting tactic by white supremacists, TERFs, and other hate groups. They become a way to reconnect to or relive the "good old days," a romanticized (false) past before modern society and civil rights. And for a lot of people, these skills are inseparably connected to their politics and may even be used as a tool to indoctrinate new people.
In the spirit of building safe communities, here's a complete list of the safe resources I've found for learning homemaking, gardening, and related skills. Safe for me means queer- and trans-friendly, inclusive of different races and cultures, does not contain Christian preaching, and does not contain white supremacist or TERF dog whistles.
Homemaking/Housekeeping/Caring for your home:
Making It by Kelly Coyne and Erik Knutzen [book] (The big crunchy household DIY book; includes every level of self-sufficiency from making your own toothpaste and laundry soap to setting up raised beds to butchering a chicken. Authors are explicitly left-leaning.)
Safe and Sound: A Renter-Friendly Guide to Home Repair by Mercury Stardust [book] (A guide to simple home repair tasks, written with rentals in mind; very compassionate and accessible language.)
How To Keep House While Drowning by KC Davis [book] (The book about cleaning and housework for people who get overwhelmed by cleaning and housework, based on the premise that messiness is not a moral failing; disability and neurodivergence friendly; genuinely changed how I approach cleaning tasks.)
Gardening
Rebel Gardening by Alessandro Vitale [book] (Really great introduction to urban gardening; explicitly discusses renter-friendly garden designs in small spaces; lots of DIY solutions using recycled materials; note that the author lives in England, so check if plants are invasive in your area before putting them in the ground.)
Country/Rural Living:
Woodsqueer by Gretchen Legler [book] (Memoir of a lesbian who lives and works on a rural farm in Maine with her wife; does a good job of showing what it's like to be queer in a rural space; CW for mentions of domestic violence, infidelity/cheating, and internalized homophobia)
"Debunking the Off-Grid Fantasy" by Maggie Mae Fish [video essay] (Deconstructs the off-grid lifestyle and the myth of self-reliance)
Sewing/Mending:
Annika Victoria [YouTube channel] (No longer active, but their videos are still a great resource for anyone learning to sew; check out the beginner project playlist to start. This is where I learned a lot of what I know about sewing.)
Make, Sew, and Mend by Bernadette Banner [book] (A very thorough written introduction to hand-sewing, written by a clothing historian; lots of fun garment history facts; explicitly inclusive of BIPOC, queer, and trans sewists.)
Sustainability/Land Stewardship
Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer [book] (Most of you have probably already read this one or had it recommended to you, but it really is that good; excellent example of how traditional animist beliefs -- in this case, indigenous American beliefs -- can exist in healthy symbiosis with science; more philosophy than how-to, but a great foundational resource.)
Wild Witchcraft by Rebecca Beyer [book] (This one is for my fellow witches; one of my favorite witchcraft books, and an excellent example of a place-based practice deeply rooted in the land.)
Avoiding the "Crunchy to Alt Right Pipeline"
Note: the "crunchy to alt-right pipeline" is a term used to describe how white supremacists and other far right groups use "crunchy" spaces (i.e., spaces dedicated to farming, homemaking, alternative medicine, simple living/slow living, etc.) to recruit and indoctrinate people into their movements. Knowing how this recruitment works can help you recognize it when you do encounter it and avoid being influenced by it.
"The Crunchy-to-Alt-Right Pipeline" by Kathleen Belew [magazine article] (Good, short introduction to this issue and its history.)
Sisters in Hate by Seyward Darby (I feel like I need to give a content warning: this book contains explicit descriptions of racism, white supremacy, and Neo Nazis, and it's a very difficult read, but it really is a great, in-depth breakdown of the role women play in the alt-right; also explicitly addresses the crunchy to alt-right pipeline.)
These are just the resources I've personally found helpful, so if anyone else has any they want to add, please, please do!

Okay, as I have mentioned, I'm Ace AF. And you know that plot line in kids cartoons where the alien or foreign Warrior Royalty just sort of *violently kicks down door in full armor* "We Will Marry."? I?? Always said:
"Sure!" (#OhThankFUCK!)
Like what do you mean "No"? The powerful, attractive, monarch that is very into you has travel a great distance JUST to marry you! Now you don't have to date! They seem nice! You can skip the whole "trying to find a life partner" awkwardness.
So, Sudden New Fiancee(tm) how we doing this? Blended customs? Two weddings? One in your peoples traditions, one in mine? Should we invite your family? Tell me more about yourself.
God, this solves just... SO MUCH for me? No having to make small talk. No "do they like me?" Or "am I reading the signs here right?" No failed dates! It's positively ideal! AND they announced why they were qualified, in a VERY impressive show of power and prestige, when they arrived! Good lineage AND accomplished!! Very nice.
Don't get why everyone's so upset.
Sure the "we leave at once" thing that usually follows would have to be discussed, but that's what you DO as spouses. Really guys, it's like you think I'm incapable of common sense here.
And you know who probably agrees with me? Damian Wayne.
Hell is other people, INDEED. You expect him to just... randomly go up to people and try Courting them? What do you MEAN it's "creepy" to compile portfolios on eligible individuals of worthy bloodlines? How ELSE is he supposed to know if they are worth attempting to talk too?!
There are BILLIONS of humans on this gods forsaken rock, Richard! Is he supposed to just GUESS? Gamble and hope for LUCK? This is a MARRIAGE not a "best friends club"!
Then? Danny showes up.
Gotham heard her baby talking. Heard her KING being harassed by clearly plotting Observants and power hungry ghosts MANY times his age. Connected some dots. Formed themselves a new OTP.
Danny says "Fuck It". Worst he can say is No. According to Gotham, he is neither Shy not the meek obedient sort. Is in fact, VERY stabby. So if he's not interested he'll no doubt be BRUTALLY clear about that.
So? Danny gets Fright Knight. Go get him a horse. Someone fetch Cujo some armor. He's been told the guy like weapons and animals.
TIME TO BE IMPRESSIVE.
He goes FULL Regalia. Armor of solid night sky. Cape of frost and stardust. Crown like crack in reality itself, through which the cosmos gleam and shift. He gets a horse from the far frozen. They're wooly and carnivorous. Gets THE most impressive sword he can find to wear.
It's gonna be a gift, since he doesn't need it.
He does the whole "rend the skies open" thing. Fan fair and knights. Every title he's ever been given, no matter how embarrassing he find them in reality. And announces his intentions. Declares that ONLY Damian Wayne, aka. Robin, is WORTHY to Marry Him. And (in the traditional Ghost proposal of "either accept or tell me to fuck off" /w violence) Demands Damian accept his offer of Marriage.
Right there.
IN THE WATCHTOWER.
In front of EVERYBODY. And yes, ESPECIALLY the Bats. Who are making glitching, vaguely threatening DEMONIC NOISES. Because? You... you THREATEN the BABY? Death. Ten thousand years DEATH.
People are :O ing and backing away from the visible heatwave of unadulterated FURY being put off by Batman. Danny is nano-second from every bone his ANCESTORS had being reduced to a fine paste.
Then? Damian consider him... considers the sword being thrust in his direction, still held aloft in a steady and armored hand... contemplates those titles for a second...
And goes: "Acceptable. Very well, but I have demands."
N..... Nani the FUCK? Says local Bat-Dad. No??? You are NOT GETTING MARRIED.
Try to stop him. He very obviously IS, according to Damian, the man brought him a kick ass sword and has a giant green dog. Is the king of an ENTIRE REALITY. Yes, he realizes he probably COULD do better... but frankly? This one's cute. But if it upset you so... extended engagement. There. Happy?
NO! Because the JLA Dark are LOSING THEIR SHIT. Damian is still UNDERAGE. We don't even know how OLD this being is! NO MARRIAGE.
Damian is unimpressed. A whole six months? That he's likely already LIVED thanks to various timeloops, temporal shenanigans, and reality warping bits of fuckery? You're reaching.
Just? Marriage Meet Cute.

Mercury Stardust on TikTok a great example of a trans woman discussing this problem and exactly why you shouldn't support JK R*wling in a way I think is simplified enough for ppl to understand- it doesn't matter if you enjoy the world or the books, the money actively supports her and goes towards anti trans legislation in the UK. Worth a watch.
