You know, I don't know if someone already came up with this but let's imagine that our Schrodinger girl Lucy Gray Baird lives.
Let's imagine she lives and keeps on living to the time of the original trilogy. Snow did, after all. Mags did. Let's imagine that somewhere she does too.
Can you imagine how fucking delighted she would be watching Katniss and Peeta totally wreck Snow's day?
I mean, the whole "kids keep being sent to murder each other in a grosser and grosser spectacle" is obviously deeply upsetting.
But let's imagine Lucy Gray watching as the trainwreck of the 74th Hunger Games unfolds.
Lucy Gray appreciating the whole Girl On Fire showmanship.
Lucy Gray betting with herself about how likely the whole star-crossed lovers story is, evaluating every word and gesture as performance or reality.
Lucy Gray imagining Snow's face as another District 12 girl sings in the arena.
Lucy Gray punching the air as Katniss forces the hand of the Capitol with the berries.
Lucy Gray smirking as Snow has to crown a District 12 girl sporting a fucking mockingjay pin of all things.
Lucy Gray cussing that motherfucker for the Quarter Quell fuckery and then sitting back to watch it biting him in the ass in a Starcrossed Lovers vs The Capitol part 2 (except this time not even the Capitol wants this - bad mistake, Coryo, know your audience).
Lucy Gray laughing her ass off at the "if it weren't for the baby" bomb. You think Haymitch was gleeful? Lucy Gray would have loved the shit out of watching Peeta "butter wouldn't melt in my mouth" Mellark sowing chaos with some tearful eyes and bald faced lies.
Lucy Gray watching Katniss having to be the face of the rebellion when it's clear the poor girl is really not suited to performing, bless her heart. Just as well she does have heart.
Lucy Gray seeing The Hanging Tree not just living on but becoming the official rebel song, imagining just how haunted Snow must feel by that song.
Lucy Gray seeing The Hunger Games ended, Snow deposed and the Capitol toppled because of a revolution that sparked in part from some nobody kids from District 12.
Lucy Gray Baird outliving and having the last laugh over Coriolanus Snow. And why not, maybe even making one more song about it.

I’m here to review all of the covers of Carry On I could find. This is divided into three categories of a) English covers I see in stores so I presume are American but I also accidentally somehow have the Australian editions of Mortal Instruments so who fucking knows. b) other English editions that I’m assuming are UK/Canadian/other English speaking countries editions but don’t really know. And b) international translated covers. Now:
1. American Paperback
Tumblr media
2/10. There is nO drip or pizzazz here. The minimalist covers in the UK have more drip and pizzazz than this mf.
2. American Bookshelf (Print-On Hardcover/School Library)
Tumblr media
8/10. I didn’t like this one at first but it is the version I own so it’s grown on me. I annotated this motherfucker. It’s got SO much drip and pizzazz. I love this version.
3. American Hardback
Tumblr media
4/10. I think it’s. Fine. I don’t particularly care for it, I think against the other two covers of the trilogy this one doesn’t match at all and the paperback/Bookshelf edition match better. I would like it more if we had editions of the the rest of the trilogy that matched this.
4. UK Edition
Tumblr media
5/10 this starts what I call the ‘royal starcrossed lovers’ section of the cover editions. I believe this is the UK version? I’ve never seen it in the US, at least. Baz and Simon look like forbidden romance princes. I love it. It looks like a sweet tarts box. I simply cant rank it higher than a five but the rest ARE better.
5. Italian Edition <<3
Tumblr media
9/10 this looks like. T4T royal gay forbidden romance. I KNOW its supposed to be Baz, Simon, Penny, and Agatha but its so much better to think they’re trans.
6. Italian Edition part II
Tumblr media
7/10. This is soooo. Eating it up. They way they arent looking at each other… the DEER the MASSIVE watford silouette. Thank you Italy cover designed
7. Portugese edition
Tumblr media
7/10 the colour scheme of this is PERFECION. im literally gonna eat this one its SOOOOOOOO perfect you guys I meant it. I love this cover.
8. Hebrew Edition
Tumblr media
3/10. I have no qualms with the Hebrew cover it just feels so.. uncanny valley. Why are they switched. baz go back to the Simon’s right you’re his right hand man. His little hip jut out it so gay. What is this
9. German edition
Tumblr media
1/10 this is sooo 😭😭💀 it looks like a parody novel. What is this. This look like a 1990’s parody of Harry Potter. Its so. What.
10. Russian Edition
Tumblr media
10/10. No notes. Funniest covers EVER. My mate said this looks like Disney Magic Fairies and they were RIGHT. its so cartoonish. It looks like. Like a childrens novel AND IT HAS THE 18+ IN THE CORNER. the 18+ in the corner makes this ten times better its so FUNNY. it makes it so GOOFY. this cover understood the assignment. This book is silly and goofy.

fiction recommendations?
Ooooh ok
The Way of Kings: The opening novel to Brandon Sanderson's flagship series, the Stormlight Archive. A fresh take on the fantasy genre, filled with poc characters, great depictions of disability and mental illness, and an innovative magic system. One of my favorite fantasy novels ever.
The Three Body Problem: The first novel in Cixin Liu's Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy. Think Ender's game if it was on crack cocaine. Chinese scifi is super unique, and Cixin Liu takes it to the next level, with some wild high concept ideas. The second book in this trilogy, The Dark Forrest, is perhaps my favorite entry in the series, as it has one of the best solutions to the Fermi Paradox ever conceived. Go read it.
Pride and Prejudice: I grinned all the way through this one. Its such a feel good novel, and the relationship between Lizze and Mr. Darcy is just... UGH I LOVE IT SO MUCH. This did a lot to codify a lot of tropes in modern rom coms and romance fiction, and it does it better than any of those. Also the writing is so clever and tongue in cheek and funny.
Night Watch: This was one of the books that radicalized me. On the surface, it looks like a parody of Les Misrables. But past that, it is a biting satire, and one of the most interesting critical looks of the benefits and downsides of revolution. Terry Pratchett shows some of his best work in this book.
Codename Verity: OUGH. Has some of the best plot twists ever, and is a super raw spy thriller set in WWII. This one will get you right in the feels, and the narrator has such a strong voice, its stunning.
Lovely War: The Greek Gods narrate the stories of two starcrossed lovers during World War One. Beautiful writing that touches on themes of mental illness, death, racism, and the effects of war. This one is worth it for the framing device alone, but the leads really sell it.
The Book Thief: Death narrates the story of a german girl during WWII. A masterpiece of literary fiction, and is a must read. I dont want to spoil it much more than that.
Sabriel: The story of a teenaged necromancer tasked with rescuing her father from the clutches of a powerful spirit who has trapped him in Death. Surprisingly dark, grim, and adult for a novel in the middle school library, this one has a lot of gnarly horror, one of the best talking cats in fiction, and an awesome magic system. And its the start of a trilogy too!
The Lord of the Rings: I almost didnt include this one because it's too obvious. But heck, its just as good as people say and not enough people have read it. Go do yourself a favor and read it.
That should be a good list for yall. Let me know if you want more recs from yours truly

GRRM's blindness when it comes to Rhaegar and R/L at large haunts lmao. Here's the thing, and I don't know if I will articulate this well or not, but I don't have any issues with characters being terrible or engaging in terrible/amoral actions - these books aren't a moral play after all or an after school special lmao. But my issue is when characters act like that, but the narrative or author still wants to push them as good people we need to sympathize with and root for, while contradicting what the narrative shows with zero self-awareness.
I think he genuinely wants R and L to be seen as Good People(tm) who just greatly miscalculated their actions but the narrative just makes them into assholes lol with seemingly little self awareness by GRRM. Like, it's nice I guess that Lyanna wanted to defend Howland Reed or whatever but then having her watch Rhaegar publicly humiliate his pregnant wife and then being like, 'Yes, I am in love with him and will run away with him (while his wife and two babies are chilling at home) so I don't have to marry Robert who is a single, unmarried man having consensual sex...' I just.....am so baffled lmao. I feel like people think GRRM is a 5d chess master and all of this will be perfectly explained and make sense should he ever finish the series and I just....don't think that's the case lol. I just genuinely think he's so married to these juvenile Romeo and Juliet fantasies that his self-awareness was no where to be found when he conceived of this.
Like, he genuinely wants readers to find it romantic that Rhaegar said his teenage mistress' name when he died.....and then we find out that his toddler daughter he abandoned was hiding under his bed hoping her dad would save her before being brutally slaughtered. Like I'm sorry but IS HE INSANE LMAO.
Personally I think he got himself into a pickle. Martin never expected ASOIAF to become what it has. He expected a three trilogy fantasy series and wrote the basic plot points in the 1990s. One of ASOIAF biggest plot points is Jon is the son of Rhaegar and Lyanna. He can’t undo that, it would break the story.
And so much has come out since the 90s about abuse, sexual assault, power, and age gap relationships. We have all grown in this matter. I think he might try to make Rhaegar as morally grey as he can but I think the basic plot that they were doomed starcrossed lovers will still be a plot point.

Book Review: Secrets of the Starcrossed (The Once and Future Queen, #1)
Tumblr media
Secrets of the Starcrossed (The Once and Future Queen, #1) by Clara O'Connor
Published January 21, 2021
Synopsis: In a world where the Roman Empire never fell, two starcrossed lovers fight to ignite the spark of rebellion…
Londinium, the last stronghold of the Romans left in Britannia, remains in a delicate state of peace with the ancient kingdoms that surround it. As the only daughter of a powerful merchant, Cassandra is betrothed to Marcus, the most eligible bachelor in the city.
But then she meets Devyn, the boy with the strange midnight eyes searching for a girl with magic in her blood.
A boy who will make her believe in soulmates…
When a mysterious sickness starts to leech the life from citizens with Celtic power lying dormant in their veins, the imperial council sets their schemes in motion. And so Cassandra must make a choice: the Code or Chaos, science or sorcery, Marcus or Devyn?
Panem meets the Grishaverse in this explosive new YA trilogy perfect for readers of Marie Lu, Bella Forrest, and Cassandra Clare.
Review: With a series title like The Once and Future Queen, I went into this expecting an Arthurian legend retelling. Which is definitely not what I got. Maybe that comes up later on in the series, but I’m not sure that that is something that I will continue on to find out. Overall, this was a fine book. A part of my lack of enjoyment comes down to a matter of taste. While this may have been my reading taste at one point, it’s not really anymore. This book was very reminiscent of the dystopian/fantasy books I read in high school and loved while being new adult. I think if I’d read this book closer to then I would have definitely rated it higher. The premise was interesting, “what if the Roman Empire never fell? What if magic was real?”. I also love a book with “rich people problems”. But it missed the mark. It read young. It took a long time to get to the actual plot. And I just didn’t care about the “love triangle”.

Ranking my favorite books I've read in 2022. My goal is to read 25 books this year, but the semester's already weighing me down.
Anyway, will update throughout the year. Let's see how this goes.
1. Under the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune
2. The Missing Page by Cat Sebastian
3. Spellbound by Allie Therin
4. Slippery Creatures by KJ Charles
5. Wonderstruck by Allie Therin
6. Starcrossed by Allie Therin
7. Proper Scoundrels by Allie Therin
8. Olive Juice by TJ Klune
9. It Takes Two to Tumble by Cat Sebastian
Updated with Slippery Creatures by KJ Charles. Ooh, this was good! It did take me a bit to get into it, but once I did get into it, I found myself utterly charmed and delighted.
Will and Kim are just delightful, and this is a really wonderful strangers-to friends-to lovers-to enemies-to lovers again book.
It's the first of a trilogy and I absolutely cannot wait to read the other two.

starcrossed by josephine angelini 28.03.22
Tumblr media
For this book review, I wanted to discuss my favorite comfort read, Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini. I first discovered this trilogy in highschool, as I am a big fan of anything Greek mythology. The books are a retelling of Helen of Troy and her lover, Paris.
The main character of the books is Helen Hamilton, a seemingly ordinary girl from Nantucket, Massachusetts. As Helen is about to start her junior year of highschool, her world is turned upside down by the Delos family who have recently moved onto the island. The Delos family, unbeknownst to Helen, are a family of demi-gods who come from the rival house of Poseidon. They expose Helen’s true heritage to her as a descendant of Aphrodite and help teach her how to control her powers. While Helen is trying to figure out her new life as a Scion, she also has to figure out her feelings for Lucas. Helen must decide whether or not it is worth it to enact another Trojan War in order for her to be with her one true love.
This is a short read that is perfect for romance and Greek mythology lovers. The trilogy is perfect for weekend beach reads or lazy day plans.

any recs for HR along the lines of A Rogue by Any Other name, ie very angsty with good character development?
I'd definitely recommend reading the other books in the casino series, especially One Good Earl Deserves a Lover! If you're looking for angst, MacLean's Bareknuckle Bastards trilogy also hits that button.
But additionally:
--Dreaming of You, by Lisa Kleypas. Even includes another gambling hell backdrop, and I would argue probably inspired MacLean a lot.
--The Highwayman by Kerrigan Byrne. SUPER intensely angsty, excellent character development.
--The Uptown Girls trilogy by Joanna Shupe. Set during the gilded age, again with a casino setting. Bad boy heroes with dark pasts, romancing upper class sisters.
--Waking Up with the Duke by Lorraine Heath. One of the angstiest books I've read in a while, I'm in love with it. Less angry hero, but he's got some inteeeense feelings.
--The Earl Takes All by Lorraine Heath. Intense angst, wild plot.
--Seduce Me At Sunrise by Lisa Kleypas. Like Wuthering Heights but they don't hate each other, hugely angsty hero.
--The Raven Prince by Elizabeth Hoyt. Like Jane Eyre but a lot less complex, hero has smallpox scars, I love it.
--Duke of Midnight by Elizabeth Hoyt. Class divide, very dramatic hero when he becomes unstarched.
--Three Little Secrets by Liz Carlyle. Secret baby, starcrossed lovers, angst angst angst.

Hey what are your thoughts on this new john boyega star wars/reylo drama we are apparently closing 2019 out on? (Disclaimer: not a star wars fan, I just get curious when the fandom gets pissy lmao)
oh boyyy, did they ever get pissy
*deep breath*
i think folks have forgotten the real roots of reylo as a ship and i’m here to remind them: back in 2015/2016, this ship was fun because it was trashy. it was classical villain/heroine fodder, angsty and deliciously problematic and a lot of fun. TFA made it clear there was an interesting, important connection between them, but their dynamic could go either way. john boyega pointing this same shit out in a joke shouldn’t have pressed ppl’s buttons, because it’s true. part of reylo’s appeal is the push and pull, the chase/fighting, the violence. i remember being in the goddamn trenches with this ship, defending the problematique. some shippers can claim that it was always about redeemed ben solo uwu, but that’s not why they started shipping them after TFA. we wanted to see bad guy fighting good girl and getting his ass handed to him. redemption was always secondary. that’s why we like villain/heroine ships. because there’s a villainous aspect to them. the proper reaction reylo folks shoulda had to boyega’s tweet is: “YES that’s our ship”. own it. was john pointing out the “problematic” aspects of the ship?  ehh, i think he was mostly making fun. star wars is notorious for these kinda messy dynamics. anakin almost choked padme to death, and the franchise still promotes them as starcrossed lovers. but even if john was trying to be critical, OWN IT, FAM. be honest and stop claiming reylo is pure and wholesome. ppl have the right to criticize this ship without the fandom falling apart.
i guess ppl took more issue with his replies to fans in that thread, replies which i thought were humorous and absolutely warranted. notice that the ppl he decides to @ at immediately started talking shit about finn being a useless character, about john having a crush on his co-star or about him not being in the same league as his oscar-nominated colleague, adam driver *fart noises* (there was even one directly targeting men of color…smh). these were absolutely insulting and despicable reactions. like, the anti-blackness simply jumped out. which proves his point. he baited shippers because he knew at least some of them would expose their racist ass on twitter…and look, they did. other fans replied in polite disagreement and moved the fuck on. but an embarrassing chunk decided to be spiteful cry-babies. all of it read to me like an actor who is done being pushed around, who had to deal with so much racist BS during this trilogy, whose contract is finally up, and who can finally tell ppl what’s what. the claims that he was being misogynistic towards rey’s character also don’t stand up to scrutiny. he can’t joke about finn giving rey good dick after ben’s death? so only reylos can have shippy, smutty headcanons? pleeeease. and how is that demeaning to rey? what, she has to stay pure and wholesome for ghost!ben? like, this reeks of ppl being uncomfortable with the black character expressing sexual desire towards the white woman.
unrelated to his tweet, where i think boyega could be criticized is in his treatment of rose vs rey. i wish he would be as vociferous and opinionated about kelly marie tran’s treatment, on and off set. i also wish he would examine his desire to be paired up with the “valuable” white protagonist rather than the “undesirable” woman of color who was basically given the boot at the end of the trilogy. i’m not saying he shouldn’t stan finnrey. i do too, but his refusal to acknowledge rose/finn because he knows it’s a devaluation of his character should make him question why rose/finn was written like a devaluation of his character. anyway, he seems to care more about finnpoe, either way, so i’m not going to get into that.
the take-away for me is that a) anti-black sentiments are still widely spread in fandom, especially on twitter, it just takes one tweet to exhume them, and b) reylo fam needs to own up to how the ship started out in the first place, what its initial appeal was, and the tropes that it is indebted to. embrace and acknowledge the problematic. ofc, you have the freedom to erase the problematic aspects, sure, no one can stop you (the new trend cropping up of making reylo sound like it was wholesome from the start and ben solo did nothing wrong ever uwu…zzzzz), but don’t try to deny them altogether when ppl express divergent opinions.  john boyega’s tweet takes nothing away from your enjoyment of the ship. if it does, it means it’s your job to examine why acknowledging the messy aspects of reylo makes you uncomfortable.

This Savage Song, the Anti-Starcross Lovers Story
When it comes to starcross, both lovers die at the end. However, in This Savage Song by Victoria Swab, one dies and another lives. And yet, what ties both Kate and August together that despite being on the opposite sides in the North and South division of Verity is that they are both lonely. Kate wanting to become ruthless in order to get her crime lord father’s approval, and August wanting to become human. Overall, it’s their loneliness that brings them together. This is the first series by Victoria Swab I’ve ever completed. I read her other book the Archive years ago, and never got the chance to finish it. This was before I knew duologies were a thing, since I was so use to reading trilogies. One things for sure, I plan to check out the other books that she has written. What impress me the most is that in each new series, we’re given a new protagonist, along with some different lore and world building in the case of the monsters we meet in all two books. But more importantly, Kate and August’s love for music is the thing that brings them both together.
