Would anyone care for some unsolicited fanfic recs in this trying time?
Star Wars (because I have no other life):
(Re)convene by Nightfall_1409:
10 years after sacrificing himself for the Rebellion, Ezra Bridger is offered the chance to turn back the clock and alter the course of history forever- the Force sending back with him a ragtag band of heroes, all whom have proven themselves worthy of the chance, all of whom have the drive to prevent the events that turned their lives into living nightmares, all of whom have the chance to save their loved ones from their fates.
Now 35 years in the past, returned to the era of the Republic 6 years before the rise of the Empire, 3 years before the start of the Clone Wars, he has to unite his scattered allies- Ahsoka Tano, Din Djarin, Boba and Omega Fett- and put together the puzzle of what caused the galaxy to fall, or they'll all be doomed to watch it happen again.
Personal Thoughts:
I really like this one. Time travel is my favorite trope. It’s well written, it draws you in, and the author has done an excellent job of mashing up Legends and Canon in fun and unique ways.
It has everything: Force Sensitive Omega, Tired Space Dad Din Djarin accidentally becoming a main character, Ezra and Anakin as chaotic besties, no Jedi bashing, and much more that would be spoilers.
The author tries to update twice a month. It’s really good. Also this is the only one I’m including the summary for because I’m lazy.
Time-Traveling Artoo by SpiderMansUnfriendlyNeighbor
Crack fic go brrrr. Seriously though, it’s just Artoo fucking with Sidious and then kidnapping children to matchmake. I was laughing the whole way through.
A Means of Survival by LessAttitudeMoreAltitude
In which Ursa finds a half dead Jedi Padawan named Caleb and the Mandalorian Adoption instinct activates. Listen, Sabine has decided the Jetti’ad is her favorite person, they can’t just not adopt him
The Time Heals ‘verse by jessicas_pi
Force Sensitive Sabine travels back in time to the Clone Wars, accidentally bonds with a Force Entity that I’m 99% sure is the Brother, becomes Obi-Wan’s Padawan, and keeps accidentally-on-purpose bringing people back to the past.
Also Quinlan Vos is there.
It’s Sabezra if that’s a turn off for anyone.
You Either Die A Hero… by RennyBanette
The 501st gets trapped in a time loop on Umbara. Delightful crack full of Krell murder and fire.
The Desert Storm by Blue_Sunshine
This is the Star Wars time travel fic. It’s so good. 4 years after the fall of the Republic Obi-Wan gets caught in a sandstorm, and when it passes he’s back in time when Anakin’s just a three year old clinging to his mom’s skirt.
Naturally, Obi-Wan frees the Skywalkers, changes his name to Ben Naasade, takes his younger self as a Padawan, and gives Mace Windu so many headaches.
Featuring: Jedi Shmi Skywalker, Pong Krell getting his shit wrecked, Legends stuff, Jedi Shmi Skywalker, Mandalorians being awesome, Alderaan being awesome, Jedi Shmi Skywalker, Obitine, the Sith being evil and creepy, and most importantly, Jedi Knight Shmi Skywalker

A Matter of The Heart - A Thrawn/Female OC Fanfic
Small note- This is based in a alternative timeline where Thrawn is victorious over the New Republic in Legends and creates a new Empire that includes the Chiss. This takes place many years later after Thrawn's victory at Bilbringri and retaking of Coruscant.
Tumblr media
Prologue - Night Balcony
The glow of the city meets the reddish haze of sunset. Speeders and ships fly by in the distance, scurry to reach their destination. Life, so much life around me. Feelings entangle in the force as I reach out with my senses, feeling out at that distant jungle of urban life.
Feelings of hesitation and yes, a little bit of love comes from behind me. I open my eyes bringing my attention back to the present as hands are placed on my shoulders.
Turning around, I look up into the eyes, and face of one that for most of my life, has been my whole life.
Smiling as he places a hand on my face, the soft friction of his thumb playing on my cheek, warms where the night breeze has chilled. His other hand is placed on my lower back.
"I take it that you are fully prepared for your mission?" He says with a slight smile.
"Yes, all is prepared Grand Emperor."
"Marilia, I have told you countless times that when we are alone, you can just call me, Thrawn."
"Yes, Thrawn. It's just that I prefer an open battlefield to politics. At least in a battle it's pretty clear who you have to shoot to get the job done."
A small laugh, "Very true, but your mission will possibly prevent a war. Saving lives."
"You think he is capable of bringing about war?"
"I think Formbi will do whatever he believes is right to bring the Chaf family greater power in the Ascendancy. I know too well what his ambitions can cost people." Sadness touches his eyes as he looks up to the cityscape.
I want to ask him what he means but if he hasn't told me already it means that I am not meant to know now but nonetheless, I reach out in the force to see if I can catch anything, nothing.
"I can feel you wanting to know more but I won't prejudice your mission. All in good time, Marilia."
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to pry. It's just I have known you most of my life, but there are parts that are still a mystery. But sometimes my curiosity makes me overstep my place for that, I am sorry."
"It's alright, my dear. There is nothing to forgive."
By now, we have separated and are standing side by side, his arm around my shoulder.
"If I may ask, why not use a Chiss agent for this task? It would be easier to get them in, they wouldn't stick out as much, especially if Formbi detests outsiders."
"Yes, I was wondering when this question would appear. I don't want to risk getting a Chiss involved cause if caught the implications will just add more fuel for Formbi to use against the other families particularly the Mitth."
"So if I would be caught then you can just point to the Intel of Formbi's schemes and it would be an Imperial matter rather than an internal Chiss affair. You had this mission in mind when you started the Galactic Student Exchange?"
"Precisely but on the Exchange I thought of it after years of facing the rather unpleasant speciesism of the past Empire. It just became a convenient way of getting you in."
"I admit that I will miss Coruscant, this will probably be the longest I will be away."
"Just the planet, my dear?" His voice is smooth as silk.
"No of course not, I will miss our evenings together as well." Replying as I smile up at him.
"Good, I admit that I will also miss your presence." He says giving my shoulder a slight squeeze.
I smile to myself, we have always been close but just recently we started to get more romantic, nothing past dinners, art shows, opera outings, and sometimes just a movie in his two floors in the Imperial Palace. Nothing overnight. Nothing serious.
"I best get some sleep, the mission starts early."
"Yes, of course, my dear." He nods as he guides me to the door.
"Thank you for a wonderful evening" I say looking up into his eyes.
My heart thuds quickly in my chest. The need to be close to him, to feel him completely in my arms. I want to tell him, how I feel but I am afraid of the ramifications.
"No need to thank me, Marilia. I will see you off tomorrow. Get some rest." He replies as he closes the door.
I give a slow nod as I head to the lift to the lower floor to my quarters.
As I key the lift down and it opens up to my floor, I nod to a passing Royal Guard making his usual patrol of the floor. In front of my quarters now, keying open the door, I enter into a fairly large apartment. Making my way to my bedroom, I skip undressing and just lay down to sleep after setting an alarm.

My Star Wars Update: Some Reading, Some Writing
As always, the Star Wars reading continues. Here are the books I’ve been diving into: Star Wars Rebel Force Book 4: Firefight, by Alex Wheeler. This is a continuation of the junior novel series I started a while ago and which has been surprisingly entertaining. This outing takes us to Kamino, which I thought was really neat, considering all the Bad Batch I’ve been rewatching. So we know what…

I’d really love for my current posted fanfics to really take off. I also have so many ideas planned so 2023 is going to be a busy year. At this rate I’m likely going to go into 2024 as well!
If you are a fic writer as well, I’m happy to reblog your stuff on here (or share links). I’d love for us to all help and support each other and build each other up.

I hate that these YouTube videos complain and moan about how the Netflix live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender was a 'failure'...I mean, if that was the case, then why had it been renewed for not one, but TWO seasons, huh?
And like...I doubt the Avatar Studios stuff is gonna be anything groundbreaking. I don't even think Avatar Studios' content will be any good. Really, it's like, why is this even a thing? Just leave the franchise alone, Bryke, and just let people who can write and make your story a lot more enjoyable (Netflix's Avatar).
It just reeks of desperation and Bryke trying to be relevant. Avatar is not the next Star Wars, I'm sorry. It's a Nick cartoon that should've been an epic four-season (maybe five seasons, who knows?) show, but it shrunk to three, to make a failed shitty trilogy movie that the first movie bombed at the box office, thanks to the creators 'SUPER WISE' decision of canceling the fourth season because they want that trilogy movie series, and honestly? That itself was a bad idea. Bryke tries too hard to make their product the next Star Wars(which I think they're fans of, which says a lot), and it painfully shows. They try too hard. REALLY hard.
Like with Legend of Korra, they try to be super edgy with their 'story' and 'characters', but they just miss the mark on what made ATLA great. I mean, they don't even care about how the bending looks anymore in Korra. Really, there's a reason why they put the final season online, and it was just a bad show. Don't deny it, everyone. I'm certain it would've been good...but it was executed poorly and made not only a mockery of the characters in that show but the OG characters of ATLA(especially Katara). Well, maybe Zuko is the only one who's doing alright...but that just reeks of sexism doesn't it? Toph is all alone in the Swamp, and Katara is...not who she is...always sad about Aang's death...like get it together girl, you're mother-effin KATARA. Get with it!
And another thing, what more is there to tell? What is the next series even going to be? The Avatars are cut off after Korra, right? So...what now? And if you put the setting in some lame-ass futuristic steampunk or cyberpunk world and have bending in it, then...well, that's not really Avatar, is it? It's just its own thing at this point. And really, I don't want any new characters...I never wanted Korra's characters either if the writing they have for them was that bad.
I just think this whole Avatar Studios is just...again, desperation. Like why not reboot it or just...tell the same story, but with a different setting?
Sorry, lost track.
What I'm trying to say is, is that people act like the Netflix live-action of Avatar: The Last Airbender supposedly 'failed', which isn't the case. Y'all are just butthurt about how your 'perfect show' got 'tainted' by big corporations, and honestly, that's far from it. The people behind this live-action were very committed, and the actors were very respectful of their roles. The BTS looked like everyone was having a good time. And here you have idiots going on about how the live-action sucks because...what, Aang talks too much? No sexism from Sokka? Katara didn't act all rage-filled or whatever? I can get the criticisms, but still, I enjoyed it. I liked it. I want to see more.
It's just that this stupid fandom likes to put down the live-action because the cartoon is supposed to be this or that and it doesn't have this...when honestly, it's its own thing, but it's still Avatar! Let it be its own thing! You got the cartoon, now look at this NEW Avatar: The Last Airbender by Netflix! Look at the way they portray the characters, look at the direction they're going, look how they world-build, just look at it! It's almost like fanfiction, and really, isn't that what Avatar is? Fanfiction? It may be a cartoon show, but it's still fiction. They're not real people. We can do whatever we want with them. We're just borrowing their characters, story, and world.
This whole thing is an adaptation. So it's not your cartoon...but it's still Avatar.
I know I'm just rambling at this point, but I'm just kind of tired of seeing thumbnails on YouTube of people bringing down the live-action Avatar. I genuinely enjoyed it, and yes, while it may have some things to work on, the people behind the show will listen to their criticisms and work on that. But again, I still liked it.
Just know one thing...Bryke would've made the live-action of Avatar a whole lot worse if they were in control. I really do believe that. And as for Avatar Studios...I give it a year before it goes bankrupt. I know that's a little harsh, but I just know that the animated Avatar movie is going to be disappointing. ^^;

Fandom Salt so I'm putting it beneath a cut.
Every day I see a new post lambasting everyone that doesn't think the Jedi are 1000% correct in everything they do because 'attachment is just about being possessive' but no one ever clarifies how precisely this translates into things like 'children should never ever know their parents or they might get attached.' That's the whole reason they thought Anakin was too old!
Coincidentally this also gets in the way of 'you can always leave the Jedi' because yes, you can, but good luck because you have been raised in a temple since infancy and have no idea how to live outside of it and you may well have exactly zero connections to help you learn. There is more than one way to make it difficult to leave!
(There is also how, if the Jedi Council had their way multiple people who had been saved through the Clone Wars would have been left to die because of the Greater Good. Plo Koon and the Wolfpack among them.)
The Jedi have positives and negatives, and people having different interpretations of what those are in a massive franchise that has both canon and legends diversions through hundreds of writers (who do not all agree with each other) is not about anyone Not Being A Real Fan of Star Wars.
Also criticism of the Jedi's choices, role in the Republic, and even how their philosophy is portrayed is not criticism of non Western regions because the Jedi are not fucking real and their Buddhist elements are what's perceived by a white American man that grew up Methodist. Please engage with these religions beyond how they relate to fictional space monks.
Anyway I don't actually hate the Jedi and in fact quite like them because 95% of them are in fact good people trying their best but I do hate how I keep running into posts that are essentially THE JEDI ORDER IS PERFECT IN EVERY WAY AND IF YOU DISAGREE YOU ARE FALLING FOR SITH PROPAGANDA. It's a topic that never ever seems to allow for nuance and that's why I get regularly frustrated about it. Especially as a fan of clones who has A Lot of thoughts about how the Jedi have helped and failed them.

Some background on The First Empress
Tumblr media
So the following excerpt was going to be my original foreword for The First Empress. Last October, however, I was informed in a rejection letter that the foreword was too long (among other, more homophobic reasons for rejecting it). Then, when I looked up how to write a foreword, I found out that, at least in fiction, it's customary to have someone else write it for you. While Matthew Keville (@matthewkeville) was kind enough to write my new foreword, I kept the original foreword, and at a beta reader's suggestion I think I'm going to use it as an "About" page for my website. Content warning for background and personal history.
I think it was fall semester of 2002 at Boise State University. During one of my literature courses, the professor was highly impressed with my reading responses for Homer’s Iliad, particularly in regards to my observation that the story is in no way a conflict between good and evil. And I liked that about it. I liked that there were noble and ignoble characters as well as likable and unlikable characters on both sides of the conflict. In his notes on one of my responses, Professor Jim recommended that I read Thucydides’s History of the Peloponnesian War, which began my interest in ancient history in general and Classical Greece in particular. One of my college friends owned a lovely little coffeehouse/used bookstore for several years, and I bought many volumes out of her ancient history section.
In the late ‘00s, I developed acute depression/anxiety while working on my Master’s Degree in Literature. Though I somehow managed to complete my degree, my depression became so severe that in 2011 I had to step down from a teaching job I loved beside colleagues I liked, because I couldn’t function well enough to fulfill my duties outside the classroom. I decided it was horribly unfair to my students that they couldn’t count on me to do my part, so I walked away. I made the most painful decision I’ve made in my life and stepped down from a job I’d spent three years studying and training for.
My first successful step toward recovery came when I started writing for myself again. No more thirty-page theses, no more ten-page research papers written over the weekend, no more feedback on forty-to-sixty student papers. I typed up some story concepts and revisited some old stories that I hadn’t looked at in a decade. I started a blog, and then a side-blog, and then a Tumblr page to go with the side-blog. I even started a fan-fiction account that features mostly The Legend of Korra novellas and Star Wars one-shots.
During the summer of 2012, I wrote several chapters of a young-adult fantasy novel in a high- to late-medieval setting, featuring a young, somewhat Mary-Sue heroine whose wizened mentor was named Zahnia, the Chronicler—an immortal historian trapped forever as a nine-year-old girl. As I started to flesh out Zahnia’s character, I decided I wanted to explore her origin story, tying it in with the creation of the Tollesian Empire, where the story takes place. For National Novel Writing Month 2012, I began work on the first draft of The First Empress and spent over ten years tinkering, expanding, and revising in my free time. But the more I worked on the story, the bigger it got. George RR Martin once described a spectrum of writers, ranging from architects who outline and design the structure and foundation of their story before they start writing, to gardeners who plant the seeds of the story, then let it grow, expand, and develop organically. I’m very much the garden-variety writer.
And so the story kept getting bigger, both in my head and on paper. I fell short of the original 50K word goal by over 10K, but felt like I had a pretty solid start. By the end of that first NaNoWriMo, I knew that it was probably going to be multiple books, so I narrowed down what I wanted to include in Book I and started focusing on those story lines. The original story was to be two separate stories that converge at the end of Book I, with the main story focusing on the title protagonist, Queen Viarra, and the first year of her rise to power, while the background story focuses on Zahnia, the curse of her immortality, and her escape from her captors. In the original outline, Book I would end with our characters first meeting.
Even in the early stages, however, it was extremely difficult to reconcile the two stories. Viarra’s story was over twice the size of Zahnia’s and, for the most part, more exciting for my beta-readers. Zahnia’s scenes often felt like unwelcome interruptions, rather than interesting interludes, and were difficult to intersperse side-by-side with scenes happening in Viarra’s story. At some point in the process, I stopped trying to intersperse them and made Zahnia’s scenes separate chapters. While this worked better, there could be as many as four or five Viarra chapters between Zahnia chapters, and some of my readers pointed out that they sometimes had to go back and reread previous Zahnia chapters to understand what was happening in the latest chapter. I occasionally thought about taking Zahnia’s story out altogether and making it its own novel.
I made my ultimate decision on the matter in July of 2021 when I finally finished the first complete draft of The First Empress. The draft weighed in at over 206K words—which I knew was a lot, but I didn’t grasp the full size until one of my readers pointed out that in paperback format, that’s over eight-hundred pages! I decided almost immediately that the best option was to split them up into three books. Books I and II now deal entirely with the first year of Viarra’s rise to power, meeting Zahnia, her future chronicler, at the end of Book II. Book III is instead mostly about Zahnia’s origins, including her curse of immortality and her daring escape from the madmen who cursed her. This worked out wonderfully as it allowed me to break the revision process into smaller chunks instead of attempting to revise 800 pages in one go.
Though Zahnia isn’t physically present for Book I and only gets a single scene in Book II, I make sure she’s still present in spirit throughout both books. In homage to classic fantasy stories like Frank Herbert’s Dune or Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series, I include epigrams written by Zahnia at the beginning of each chapter. Additionally, all footnotes and appendices are also by her. Despite her unavoidable sidelining in what was supposed to be her origin story, Zahnia became something of an alter-ego for me, and I want readers to understand that she is still a foundational character in the series.
While brainstorming leading up to that first NaNoWriMo, I decided to put my studies of Ancient Greek history to use, basing the setting and culture on the late-Classical, early-Hellenic Aegean Sea and the surrounding regions. The culture, politics, and technology—both in how they begin and how they advance as the series progresses—are intended to feel similar to the cultural, political, and technological changes occurring in the wake of the Peloponnesian War through the rise of Kings Philip II and Alexander the Great and beyond. Indeed, Philip and to a lesser degree Alexander were both inspirations for Queen Viarraluca, my title heroine.
(That being said, I don’t tend to view any of my characters as being an equivalent of X figure from Greek history. I drew inspiration from many historical and fictional characters for my cast, but I don’t have a story-world equivalent of Socrates or Pericles or Leonidas or Sappho or Olympias or whoever.)
The setting, though, is less intended to feel historically accurate and more about feeling historically authentic. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a hobbyist historian who hasn’t taken a history course since early in my undergrad studies. Thus, all of my reading and research is unguided, and I have no idea how well my understanding and analyses align with contemporary views. Ultimately, The First Empress is an ancient-world period-fantasy that’s inspired by rather than entirely representative of late-Classical Greece.
Throughout the process, I loved playing with the ancient-world world-building and found perverse enjoyment in taking pagan gods’ names in vain, portraying ancient inventions as new and exciting technology, and treating pants as an unusual and barbarian garment. But as a fantasy, I of course included plenty of embellishments. Sometimes world-building is brainstorming how an intelligent warrior queen and her officers would attempt to adapt a hoplite-centered army to fighting in forested terrain, generally considered unfavorable to phalanx warfare. Sometimes world-building is giving a society based on the Ancient Greeks access to tea, despite zero evidence that the Ancient Greeks had anything similar to tea, all because my warrior-queen protagonist seems like a tea-drinker.
I tried as well to include neighboring cultures inspired by those the Classical Greeks had contact with. The Tollesians are inspired by Classical Greece—the Empire Pellastor and its allies being akin to the Attic and Peloponnesian Greeks while the Hegemony of Andivel and their allies are more like the Ionian Greeks. The Illaran League was originally inspired by the Ancient Illyrians but evolved into more of an Illyrian/Macedonian hybrid. The Gan are inspired by the Gauls. The Venarri are Phoenician. The Artilans are Achaemenid-era Persian. The Kossôn are Achaemenid-era Egyptian. The Wattasu are inspired by Classical-era Nasamones. And the Verleki are largely inspired by the Ancient Scythians. I want to emphasize inspired by, as I’m not an expert on any of these ancient cultures. I have no illusions that I didn’t make mistakes or misinterpret things. I also eventually hope to include cultures inspired by the Samnites, Germanic tribes, Kushites, and possibly even cultures as distant as the Han and Mayans.
Experimenting with ancient-world cultures and in particular with ancient-world sexuality has been some of the most fun I’ve had writing. The Classical Greeks were an openly sexual culture, openly bisexual and often polyamorous. Rather than gloss over their sexuality like a coward, I chose to let my characters embrace it in the story. In doing so, I quickly decided that authors who only write monogamous, heterosexual relationships are missing out on all kinds of wonderful and fascinating relationship dynamics. Queen Viarra is a lesbian, and nearly all of the other characters fall somewhere on a pan- or bisexual spectrum. Zahnia, meanwhile, is asexual, as is one of Viarra’s ambassadors. I have a transgender hoplite officer, as well, and I have other characters in mind for future LGBT+ representation. As bisexuality was normal and even expected in Classical Greek culture, I try to treat it as something normal in my stories as well.
Though so far only one person has asked me why I’d include LGBT+ characters when I’m not LGBT myself, my answer to them and anyone else is that positive representation is important. Louie, my therapist, shared an anecdote during one of our sessions back in 2021 and gave me permission to share with readers. He was hosting some friends of his family for a few days, including his childhood friend who is a lesbian. His copy of my manuscript was lying around, and he started telling them about my lesbian title protagonist who’s also a strong ruler and a formidable warrior queen. His friend was very curious and asked smart questions about the character and story-world. Louie told me that she almost teary-eyed asked him to thank me for writing the characters as gay. She apparently was thrilled not only at the gay representation from the leading couple, but also at the bi representation from other characters.
When a gay woman in her late forties gets teary-eyed at the inclusion of a lesbian couple in a period-fantasy novel, I think it’s a sign that this kind of representation is absolutely necessary.
On the other hand, there were other aspects of Classical Greek culture that I wasn’t as keen about attempting to portray. The Greeks at the time were notoriously misogynist, for example. Much of Greek culture viewed women as property. Athens in particular had all kinds of laws restricting women, including a truly heinous law specifying that female slaves’ court testimonies were only valid if they testified under torture. I did away with a lot of that in my story-world. Scythians, Illyrians, Nubians, Sarmatians, Lusitanians, Suebi, Gauls: plenty of ancient cultures had traditions of skilled huntresses, warrior women, women pirates, influential queens and noblewomen, and successful businesswomen. Philip II of Macedon’s first wife was warrior queen, and he allowed their daughter and granddaughter to be trained in the same manner. That the Classical Greeks couldn’t get with the program is frankly their loss.
As this is my story-world and my tale to tell, I saw no particular reason to carry on that tradition. Queen Viarra isn’t the only powerful queen in the story, nor is she the only woman-warrior in hoplite’s panoply. Though a certain level of misogyny exists, it’s on the level of individual characters or communities, rather than a cultural norm.
Why?
Because it doesn’t have to be a norm! It’s fiction! Misogyny and sexism don’t have to be normal! Racism doesn’t have to be normal! Homophobia and transphobia don’t have to be normal! I shouldn’t have to create a hateful story in order to meet some mouth-breathing neoclassicist’s concept of historical accuracy. One of the best things I learned from reading Effie Calvin and Garrett Robinson’s novels is that truly excellent and inclusive stories with engaging characters, world-building, and conflicts can be created without some need to incorporate real-world prejudices. And when these prejudices do show up in The First Empress, I try to set them up as criticisms of ancient society, rather than something I lazily included for some pretense of “historical accuracy.”
At least three of my beta-readers compared The First Empress favorably to George RR Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series. (To paraphrase one of my Tumblr readers, any fantasy with historical inspiration and more politics than wizards will draw Game of Thrones comparisons.) Even so, not only would I never assume to be in the same league as an award-winning fantasy author whose stories have sold countless millions of copies and gotten their own popular television adaptation, I don’t feel like Martin’s goals as a storyteller are at all similar to mine. His stories seem to place the most emphasis on shocking readers—and he’s unparalleled at it! My goal is to give readers a lot to think about. Hopefully I pull that off well.Plus, if readers can handle A Song of Ice and Fire… I think The First Empress might seem a little mellow by comparison.
Thanks so much for your interest in my book, folks. I hope you find my story and characters entertaining, interesting, thought-provoking, or at the very least enjoyable to read. Thanks for reading and take care!

Hi, did you look into the response of the fans of the novel ‘The Legend of the Condor Heroes’? I heard the reaction of the movie announcement created a stir, was it positive or negative?
Also, why is this novel so popular in China? I didn’t understand the hype from xz fans or people in general who support him.
Hi Anon,
I actively avoid looking into these things. Just as when huge IP like Batman or The Lord of the Rings or Spiderman or Star Wars films - and ESPECIALLY The Little Mermaid - make big casting announcements, the response of audiences is best ignored. I don't GAF what random Joe Blow has to say about anything, ever. In pretty much every case it's going to be A] ignorant and devoid of any sense of imagination, B] knee-jerk and ill-considered and C] utterly and completely meaningless.
So I honestly don't know much about how the announcement was received. No doubt there were some people who were excited about it, and some people who were frothing at the mouth against it.
No one's opinion about it matters before it's even been filmed. It's all speculation. Let the team do their work and everyone can judge it on the merits when it's done.
As for why the book series is so popular, well I'd have to say - and this is just a wild guess - it's because it's SO DAMN GOOD. I've been listening to it on audiobook and it's incredibly captivating and beautifully written.
Legend of the Condor Heroes is one of the most popular fictional series of all time, anywhere. In China, its popularity is massive, massive. The closest comparison we could make is to Lord of the Rings in the West, although from what I've seen I get the sense that Legend of the Condor Heroes is even bigger in China than Lord of the Rings is here.
There are other BXG who could definitely give a better sense of it than I can, having just come to this series recently. Hopefully @potteresque-ire or some others might step forward and give us more info about the series and what it means to Chinese audiences.
As for why people are excited, it's because GG has just landed a HUGE, extremely iconic role. It's difficult to conceive of a bigger role. And the director, Tsui Hark, is very well-respected and has made some of the most popular Chinese-speaking films of all time.

My Star Wars Bucket List
So a lot of people have a “bucket list,” a list of things they want to do or accomplish before they die (kick the bucket, lol). I sort of have one for life in general, but more importantly, I have a Star Wars bucket list. Star Warsy things I’d like to do or accomplish before I die. In no particular order, here are the things I’d love to do in the world of Star Wars: Star Wars Celebration. Having…

Ranking the Doraemon Movies
Tumblr media
Having watched (or rewatched) and reviewed every Doraemon movie released up to this point, the temptation to rank them is hard to resist. I’ll stress that the following ranking is of course based on my own opinions and I can’t pretend to represent any sort of consensus viewpoint. The Doraemon films have played with such a wide variety of settings and story genres that it’d only be natural for different viewers’ rankings to differ dramatically based on personal taste.
It’s striking to me that even after over 40 installments, there are very few Doraemon movies that I’d outright consider “not worth watching”. Not only that, but each cinematic storyline manages to do something that sets itself apart from the others (excluding remakes, that’s a total of 36 unique narratives to date). Considering how easy it would be for the nearly annual releases of such a long-running, popular franchise to descend into staleness and mediocrity, that is quite an achievement. No, not every Doraemon film is a winner, and I’m not going to claim that even my favorite movies in the franchise are the pinnacle of animated entertainment. However, if you enjoy family-friendly science fiction about adventure and friendship, there are certainly worse ways to spend an evening than with a Doraemon movie that has an enticing premise.
Full ranking (with links to individual reviews) below the break...
Note that for reasons given in my review, the original Nobita and the Haunts of Evil (1982) is disqualified from ranking.
From highest to lowest rated:
Nobita and the Birth of Japan (2016)
Nobita’s Great Adventure into the Underworld (1984)
Nobita and the Kingdom of Clouds (1992)
New Nobita’s Great Demon (2014)
Nobita’s Little Star Wars 2021 (2022)
Nobita’s Little Star Wars (1985)

Nobita’s Space Heroes (2015)
Nobita’s Dorabian Nights (1991)
Stand by Me Doraemon (2014)
Nobita’s New Great Adventure into the Underworld (2007)
Nobita’s Great Adventure in the South Seas (1998)
Nobita and the Island of Miracles (2012)
Nobita’s Great Battle of the Mermaid King (2010)
Also, because I have to be a dork about this, I made a graph of this ranking with the movies ordered by release date. Each film is assigned a score based on its ranking, with the highest-rated having a score of 42 and the lowest-rated having a score of 1. The green line on the left separates the entries produced within the manga author Fujiko F. Fujio’s lifetime from those that came afterward, whereas the green line on the right marks the beginning of the 2005 anime reboot.
Tumblr media
It’s interesting to see where the rises and dips are (or so I think). Looks like I’m not a fan of most movies that came out during the first decade of the anime reboot! More recent Doraemon films, however, have started rising in the ranks again. I look forward to seeing this year’s movie!
