i mean, pretty much what it says on the tin - this was before even Glee, it was a fuckin' wasteland out there, especially for major/recurring characters in genre TV. Xena was over; Willow/Tara had long since gone down in flames; Doctor Who had just been revived by a gay showrunner who was being absolutely pilloried in the press for "pushing a gay agenda" over the mere existence of Jack Harkness. hell, even as late as 2009, when Torchwood had been a thing for several years and Russell T Davies was getting fan backlash for killing off one half of the juggernaut m/m pairing, know what the, again, then-current Doctor Who & Torchwood showrunner's advice was for shippers threatening to ragequit?

"I thank them for watching the show and I recommend they go watch Supernatural, because those boys are beautiful. And don’t tell me they’re brothers. [Laughs] Not in my mind."

over on livejournal, fic communities had been trending more and more open to weird shit for a while, but SPN was basically every possible kind of catnip for slash and iddy kink fic rolled into one and the only price of admission was getting over the incest thing. it... pretty much opened the floodgates on taboo fic. (not that there was any shortage of weird shit in, say, harry potter fandom, but there was still a mainstream vs. weird shit distinction, y'know?) the SPN and J2 kinkmemes were like. the twin black holes of weird gay porn at the galactic center of LJ fandom. the shit SPN generated/popularized spread so fast and so widely that it was Basically Impossible to exist on that corner of LJ without constantly hearing echoes of the latest bizarro J2 drama or encountering tropes that had crawled out of the seedy underbelly of SPN fic. we're talking "documented Patient Zero origin of the omegaverse" here.

basically, up until 2 months ago i had only ever seen one episode of this damn show in my life, but i feel like i've been unwilling neighbors with it for 17 fucking years, lol. because ever since the show first aired, it's been impossible to be in slash fandom and NOT be at least adjacent to it.

happy wincest wednesday!! (getting in early) -- last week you tagged a post with something about ruby serving the same role for sam as dean's siren did for him; can you say more on that? i haven't stopped thinking about it all week 👁️

a lot has already been said about the ways in which ruby consciously emulates dean to make herself trustworthy and desirable to sam. this is what a siren does according to the lore™.

and what in particular gets sam going is the wrongness of it. i wonder what else he wants that he feels evil and unclean about.

what ruby set out to do was replace dean by acting like a more permissive dean figure in his life. whether it was objectively true or not, sam felt judged by dean. he felt like a freak, like a failure, like someone who couldn't be trusted to save dean or get the job done without going darkside. ruby made him addicted to her brand of validation by portraying herself as unconditionally supportive, leading him to believe he was the one in control, that he was making a difference, that his curse could be turned into a gift, that it could redeem him if not in the eyes of the rest of the world then in his brother's, that dean was just too weak and protective to see it but that sam was powerful enough to finally fix this for both of them with her help.

sex and violence as an episode explicitly deals with themes of infidelity and sex-as-manipulation. dean's suspicions about sam's affair with ruby (and it is portrayed as an affair! dean even goes through sam's phone and calls her to confirm he's being lied to) cloud his judgement as he falls prey to the siren, who similarly portrays himself as a brother replacement. nick is easygoing and without hidden agendas. they have many interests in common and a mutual admiration. all things dean had missed since returning from the pit to find sam keeping secrets from him and viewing him as damaged goods. tl;dr the siren used the false idea that he was a better partner to dean to turn him against his own brother, like ruby did to sam.

considering the focus on boys / men facing violence from fathers & authority figures and Kripke linking violence & toxic masculinity on the Boys... I really wonder what he’d say about season 4 and 5 of SPN now.

because in Kripke’s commentary track in 4x22, recorded back in 2009 for the DVD release, he literally calls Dean a pussy for not wanting to reconcile with Sam after their fight in 4x21 (which ended, remember, with Sam strangling Dean and then Dean telling Sam not to come back if he left).

KRIPKE: I love this speech by Jim Beaver by the way. I mean Jim just comes-- here, I love this, right here [BOBBY: You sound like a whiny brat.]. I mean the way he just goes for it, just screams at Dean and dresses down Dean for basically being a wussy, ‘cause I can’t say the other word that I’m thinking of that rhymes with wussy, and just shakes him out of his kind of angsty, boo hoo, I can’t get together, I can’t reunite with my brother. The way Bobby kind of smacks him around a little bit is just a beautiful little piece from Jim that was really fun to shoot.

combine this with 5x22 and Dean’s heroic moment being taking a beating from Lucifer!Sam - did Kripke see that moment as Dean stepping up and being a man? that part of “choosing family” means enduring physical violence for family (and even from family) and if a man doesn’t, that makes him, well. a pussy?

I normally don’t like the ‘Krikpe go get therapy’ or ‘Kripke makes TV instead of getting therapy’ jokes but ummm. there is A Lot going on here, huh.
