Fun Fact
Kazakhstan’s Minister of Communications and Informatics has blocked the Tumblr site because it contained 60 sites of terrorism, extremism, and pornography in 2015.
Acquired this little dude from aliexpress in hopes that I could give his clothes to one of my Todds.
Alas, he is too big. Roughly the size of both modern Stacie and original skipper.
Skipper’s guy friend whose name escapes me would fit in these, since they have the same body, but I can’t find him right now, and also he already has clothes that fit - poor Todd is wearing an adult Barbie’s tank top.
Aliexpress boy is cheap, hollow plastic, same body mold as the current Stacie boy. But very nice except for this circle on his head, fortunately his outfit includes a hat, not pictured.
I do think it’s interesting how much skipper and Stacie have grown. Of course skipper’s been growing and shrinking for decades, but I didn’t notice how much Stacie had changed in size until I had Todd next to the new guy.
I have mentioned Stacie a few times in passing, including on the breakdown of the Roberts family post I made, but I thought I'd do a bit more of a deep dive on her as a character.
Unlike Skipper, who debuted only a few short years after Barbie and is a famous enough part of the line that she got multiple mentions and depictions in the Barbie movie, and Kelly/Chelsea, who has a following as the young child character in the line, Stacie feels like an overlooked character.
Note: not to be confused with Barbie's friend Stacey, who was in production from 1968 - 1971.
Stacie's official debut was in 1992, as the new "littlest sister" of Barbie. She was replacing Tutti, who had been discontinued and whose last appearance was in 1971.
Stacie was marketed largely as being a more tomboyish, sporty member of the Roberts family compared to the more traditionally feminine characters like Skipper and Barbie. Stacie canonically wants to be a professional athlete -typically a soccer player, though she has been depicted playing a wide range of sports or engaging in athletic activities.
When Stacie took Tutti's place in the doll line, she also took Tutti's twin brother, Todd.
And as a part of the "Wee 3 Friends" collection, Stacie branched out into her friendship group, with two besties named Lila and Janet.
(Why are these 10 year olds worried about tan lines? That doesn't feel quite age appropriate.)
Supercallifragilisticexpialidocious! Two more off my wish list, Jane and Michael Banks from Mary Poppins:)
I was looking for "Mattel Janet doll" on Mercari and so Jane and her bro here popped up in the results. I've been looking for these two for a while and for $35 they were a steal!
Look at her dainty little dress with all it's details! Ah, the good old days when Mattel actually cared... Her shoes have holes for the ribbon to thread through (though one keeps coming untied).
My only complaint is her sash snaps in back with the bow being a separate piece but it still looks nice. Her hat is so cute!!!!
I love Michael's striped jacket with little gold buttons! It even has a little pocket square:) His bowtie is a bit crooked but it works, heh. I also love that it's the same color as his sister's ribbons. He's missing his freckles though sadly.
Poor kid has a wedgie. Here you can see the coat tails and the actual lined collar and his flocked hat:) I had forgotten he had a hat int he movie lol.
I am SO happy to have these guys! I love Mary Poppins and I think this is only time Stacie and Todd were used as other characters:)
