I watched Law & Order SVU 23x21
So... I finally watched Law & Order SVU season 23 episode 21. I initially skipped over this one to the finale, which had me missing some important developments.
I think this was an important episode. It’s laying important groundwork.
I’m just figuring out what it’s trying to say.
I think I’m going to list what I’m getting.
1. Two people can love each other and have loved each other and it could still not be enough to make a relationship work, especially if the circumstances that love bloomed in or the foundation it was built on wasn’t a good one.
2. Benson has a big heart, even though she didn’t forgive Burton this episode, she is willing to forgive eventually if those people are willing to do the work.
3. The writers managed to tell a really good start of a redemption story in a single episode, for a character that I didn’t think could be redeemed at all. So it is possible.
4. People can forgive without forgetting and without giving you the same access to them again or access at all.
5. Benson learns that “You’re not going to get it” isn’t the standard. That she deserves and can have people in her life that care about her enough and respect her enough and love her enough to acknowledge the pain they’ve caused her, really acknowledge it regardless of their intentions, and do the necessary work to earn her forgiveness and possibly a place in her life. Because it’s really that simple. Simple, but not easy.
I think all of this is interesting and really sheds a different light on Benson’s situations with both Stabler and Barba.
Because 1 can apply to both of them as well.
In the sense that Benson has loved both. Does she love both now? I think so. Enough to make a relationship work? Yes, but love alone isn’t enough. Was the foundation for those relationships a good one? For Stabler, I would say no, because he was married when he and Benson first loved each other. For Benson and Barba I think the circumstances were good, but am I biased? I don’t know.
As for 2.
I think this also applies to both Stabler and Barba. Almost equally. Because if I’m honest neither set out to hurt Olivia in the first place. Yet both did. This is where the ‘love alone isn’t enough’ comes into play.
Because I think both need to own up to the ways in which they hurt Benson, because it’s not up to them to tell her which of their actions can and can’t have hurt her.
For Stabler, I haven’t seen him own up to anything he’s done that hurt Benson nor has he tried to genuinely make amends or change at all since he’s been back as far as I know. Then again he’s not really been in SVU since his return that first episode and I don’t really watch OC, so there is that. But Tumblr doesn’t lie.
Barba has given Benson an explanation as to why he did the thing that hurt her and while it’s a good one, it’s not the same as an apology. And a brief acknowledgment of your mistake you rush through only to compare how she treats you to how she treats other men she loves isn’t the way.
I think if Barba really wants a shot with Benson, a real one, he’s going to have to own up to what he did and how that hurt Benson completely. Not explain it away, not hurry through a shadow of an apology so they can move forward, because Benson isn’t quick to forgive but she is willing to if you do the work. I can see Barba doing the work more than Stabler, but he needs to start already. Just with sorry and asking how he can make amends. Drop the explanation, drop the psycho-analyzing because while he made good points that’s not what it’s about. Benson needs to know that he’s going to own up to his mistakes when he makes them without talking around them like his lawyer skills allow him to.
I can’t believe Burton beat both these guys to the punch. I’m embarrassed on both their behalf.
Thankfully, Burton doesn’t stand a romantic chance with her because their love bloomed in unfortunate circumstances and I don’t see Benson ending up with a rapist because that goes against everything she stands for.
3. Tells me they can write satisfying redemption arcs for both Barba and Stabler. I’m guessing the writers and actors involved would just have to be open to such a storyline.
And I think for both Barba and Stabler it would have to involve a return to SVU in a more consistent capacity, in order to really do that storyline justice.
But to be honest, I could see that happen for Barba, less so for Stabler. Also because the finale has dipped their toes in a redemption arc for Barba already.
4. And if one or both of those redemption arcs play out adequately it will then be up to Benson whether she forgives them and in what capacity she allows these men access back into her life, if she allows them access at all.
You know, this point makes episode 22 even more important, because you had a domestic violence victim who kept allowing her husband access back into her life without him trying to make amends, without even admitting he had done anything wrong that he needed to make amends for and definitely then without earning a place back in his wife’s life.
5. shows me Benson gets to raise her standards, because she gets to see that she can have different. She can have better. She can have the happiness she deserves. Not with Burton, but if an actual rapist can see the error of his ways and own up to his mistakes and make amends and work on being better then anyone else should definitely be able to reach that standard at the very least.
And she learns that coming from a place where you don’t condone or enable bad behavior because you love someone is the right place to come from and that when you do that the right people will stay and rise to your standards instead of you having to lower those standards, which will be good for her to take into any future relationship. And it should be something she expects back as well. Whomever she is with not condoning or enabling her bad behavior either but holding her to a higher standard as well. Because it goes both ways.

i wish i could be soft i wish i could be neat i wish my death would be artistic and my life nearly meaningless beyond aesthetic. i am too real to be sturdy. too empathetic to stay clean. one day i will find a balance between beauty and joy. one day this room will be clean enough to cry in.
