I have a somewhat unusual question and I don't want to make you do work, so feel very free to say you don't know, BUT given your username, *do you* have favourite pieces of Saint Patrice art? I may or may not be thinking of printing something and taping it to my office wall to help deal with the less pleasant clients without yelling at anyone lol
Hi Alex!! Sorry it has taken me so long to get round to answering this, but I have linked to a few of my favs under the cut :) I hope there will be something in there that helps with your clients 🙏
Also sorry to all the talented bruinsblr artists I have definitely left out here, these were just some which sprung to mind!!

Hi! I'm not sure if this has been asked before but if you don't mind answering, what sketchbook do you use, and what's the paper like (texture-wise, how strong is it, etc)? And what's your favorite pen and/or pencil to use? Are there any other materials you like to use but maybe don't work with as often? Thank you for answering if you do :D
~ A fellow artist
Hello! Nope! Actually nobody has ever asked and i am happy to answer you :)
I use Talens art creation, currently a5 size (13x21cm), i prefer smooth paper for better inking so there's not too much texture on this one. It has taken me a bit to find the one perfect for me so this may or may not work for you.
I use different mediums and this paper can hold up, it's 140gsm so it's not too thick nor thin, although if you go too heavy with watercolors, it does bend.
My favorite pencil has to be the prismacolor col erase, combined with smooth paper i always get very gentle and flowy strokes.
Favorite pen at the moment might be the stabilo point 88, but just a basic bic does a good job as well.
I have Himi gouache that i haven't touched in forever, maybe in the future I'll mess around with it, who knows.
Hopefully this will be helpful! ☺️

Redraw of my Dimiclaude modern AU crossover fanart.
3/11/2023 version of my previous 3/7/2023 sketch: https://www.tumblr.com/mysticdragon3art/711217080605786112/oh-no-alfred-is-feeding-dimitri-weeds-lol
There were some problems with my original 3/7/2023 sketch that I wanted to fix, and I did fix most of it digitally on Krita. But after a few recent scares with electronic devices breaking, I'd feel much better if I could have finalized versions of my drawings in my analog sketchbook, as much as possible. That way, when drives fail or laptops get damaged, I can just re-scan my sketchbooks, instead of losing a lot of digital work to be re-done.
3/11/2023 pencil trace of 3/7/2023 sketch, onto wax paper, flipped, traced with pencil again, then flipped again, to transfer onto sketchbook page. Inked lines with Stabilo Point 88 pens, Copic Multiliner Black 0.25 & 0.03 pens, Copic Multiliner Wine 0.3 pen, and Kuretake Zig Clean Color Real Brush 054. Colored with Copic markers and ShinHan Art Touch markers. Messed up Law's face and fixed on Krita. After I drew Law with an annoyed expression in my original 3/7/2023 sketch, I wanted to give him a cute expression, but ran out of time. (Fortunately, got funny feedback on that. Thanks, dimiclaudeblaigan!) So this version gives Law the cute expression I wanted. Some grooves in paper from tracing, made it too difficult to draw Claude's top eyelids.
Modern AU where Dimitri is a trans man married to Claude, and their children are Alfred (from Fire Emblem Engage) and Law (from Tales of Arise). Headcanons inspired by https://dmclemblems.tumblr.com/post/695340088928993280/the-happy-dimiclaude-family-expands-with-a-new

I DO WANNA ASK!! WHAT OTHER PENS DO YOU USE BISCUIT⁉️
YAYYYYYY YIPPEEEEEEEE TEE HEE
WELL!!!
i may as well start with a more recent acquisition, the zebra sarasa clip, specifically the milk color set in 0.5 mm. jetpens shills HARD for zebra sarasa clips. anyway theyre mid as hell and are not representative of the gel pen experience - cheaper pens in novelty shapes write better than the zebra clips, but they do have a very nice almost pencil-y tactile feel because of it. in plain text, they're scratchy. the colors are wonderful though, EXCEPT for that damn white gel pen... if you wanna go really matte with your white pens or be able to write on dark paper, get a gelly roll or use a paint pen because god damn the zebra sarasa pens are TRANSPARENT AS FUUUUCK despite being advertised as being able to write on dark paper clearly. SCAM!!!!!!! but i do really like the colors and when i want a more pencily feel i go for them. they also make really fine, textured lines, which is nice for getting your crunch on (making ur art look purposefully crusty)
also. i am a believer in the tombow brush pens. my school had a sketchbox subscription they kept forgetting to cancel and so they had a few of them laying around and me and the other art girl were always passively slapfighting for them with psychic mind games. i finally bought one for myself and despite me usually not liking brush pens...... lads... its good.... its one of the first brush pens i've had that doesn't fray after using it like three times. so i can actually use it for fine AND thick lines without having to work around the shitty nib. looking at you faber-castell brush nib.
i have a couple different fineliners (felt tipped, water based ink) and theyre pretty alright. le pens are a great choice for writing, not so much for drawing. i like the staedler tripluses a lot, they're just handy for workhorse writing and consistent thin lines. stabilo point 88s are also good. i cant really tell the difference between fineliners a lot of the time because they're all very similar, le pens are the most distinct ones i've used because of their softer tips. you have to really baby fineliners so the tip doesnt get squished which kind of makes them a pain to use. oh also i used to love the faber-castell pitt artist pens for their consistent lines and firmer nibs but god damn they do NOT play nice with other art supplies. and as someone who swaps between mediums a lot it just isnt. ideal.
i used to be a rollerballhead but i've fallen in love with gel pens... they may smear easily but god damn are they goopy........... fuck yeah...... i'm SUPER biased towards gelly rolls just because i'm the most familiar with them, but they're super fun for doodling and have really vibrant colors!!! i also like them because sakura was the first company to make gel pens in the 80s - gel pens are super recent compared to other writing tools which i think is cool as fuck. theyre like. the future...... plus theyre just a smoother writing experience. shitty gel pens are 10000x better than shitty ballpoint pens. the pilot g2 is the best of any commonplace office pen fuck everybody else pilot g2 is my best friend
microns are fine i guess. i used to like them more in middle school but they're so sensitive to getting smushed that using them comes with Fear. i've never smushed one before, but i HAVE had friends ruin my microns when i lend one to them for like five seconds. i think they're copic-proof which is why people like them? i dunno. they're prone to fraying, the nibs just arent very good compared to other options
i REALLY wanna try a pilot frixion but i havent gotten any yet, i plan on buying a set early next year! they're erasable pens that use heat and friction from a rubber eraser to disappear the ink, which is super cool. but a warning: because they're heat sensitive (and their ink comes back when exposed to temperatures under 14 degrees fahrenheit!) the ink can all activate in the pen and become transparent if you leave it in a hot car. or your notes can disappear if you leave them in a hot car and you'll have to pop them in the freezer to get them back
OH OH OH OH i have generic brand paint markers (tooli-art) and they're great until they explode. i use the white one a lot because it's handy to have what is essentially a pen of white-out on hand, but i don't use the colored ones nearly as often because they're messy and...... a few of them have kind of exploded at the nib which makes them drooly and gross. the only posca i have is a brush one and the brush poscas are shittáy
i feel like i forgor something but this isnt a fountain pen rant this is about my other ones. enjoy

Hobonichi A6 Notebook First Impressions
Tumblr media
Overall, I'm not completely sold on Hobonichi, but I've only done some basic tests with a few pens and colors. Many, many more thoughts plus pictures under the read more (the lighting in my pictures isn't great since it's overcast, but I wanted to get this posted sooner rather than later). I'm far from being an expert on any of this stuff, but these are all my genuine impressions of the book so far.
Honestly, I was surprised by the thickness of the cover. The cover struck me as pretty flimsy based on what I had seen in videos, but it actually feels relatively thick and sturdy compared to my expectations. I'm sure it would leave a wrinkly crease if I were to bend it too much, as it is still a bit flexible. I was pretty impressed that such a small, thin notebook could lay open flat in the way that Hobonichi books do.
Tumblr media
I did have to crack the spine a bit to keep the book open at first, but there were few issues keeping it open on it's own after breaking it in a little. Although, that then makes the front cover lift, which I don't super love.
Tumblr media
It'd be nice it there was a little elastic to keep it closed since the cover isn't heavy enough to keep the book closed on it's own. I'm sure there are ones I could buy separately or a cover that could help keep it closed, but I'm trying to use a cheaper introduction to Hobonichi products before deciding to make a larger investment in accessories and bigger books. In the meantime, I'll just deal with it or use a hair tie to keep it closed if I feel like I have to lol.
I heard someone in a Hobonichi unboxing video talk about how the paper smells really nice, which, at the time, I thought was a little odd. But I can see why she said that now lol. I was flipping through the pages and caught a whiff, and it does smell really nice. It's distinctly different from the smell of old Yugioh cards from when I was a little kid, but something about the book makes me nostalgic for them. I told my brother to smell it, too, and it made him nostalgic for Christmas at our old house when he was a little kid. Couldn't say exactly why though. (He kept sticking his face in the pages and inhaling, and I had to tell him to stop before he sucked all the scent out of my notebook lol.)
As far as my thoughts on actually using the Tomoe River paper, I'm... not super impressed right now? I do like how it feels tactilely; it's very smooth, thin, and pleasant to flip through (it almost reminds me of the paper Bibles are usually printed on from what I remember). But it ghosts as much as I've seen it do in videos, and as I've said, I don't love ghosting. Makes the paper feel too busy to read properly. I also primarily use gel pens, especially my Uniball Signo 207 Micro, and boy howdy does it take a long time for gel pens to dry enough not to smear.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even after a few minutes, my Uniball pen was still smearing after I wiped it. I've recently started trying out the Pilot Frixion Erasable pen (thoughts on that to come), and it's a very wet, runny pen but dried enough not to smear after about 20 seconds. Good thing about that pen is that if it does smear, it can be erased adequately enough. Paper Mate Inkjoy gel pens also take a long time to dry. After a few minutes of testing other pens, I flipped the page to check how the ghosting was, which left residue from some of the pens on the cover page.
Tumblr media
I also tested a few Pigma Micron pens (02, 05, and PN), and those dried much faster than the gel pens I tested. 02 dried the fastest, probably because it was the thinnest tip size and deposited the least amount of ink onto the paper. I found that the Stabilo Point 88 fineliner pens and a BIC ballpoint blue ink pen had no smearing when I tested them. The Tombow Fudenosuke hard tip pen did not smudge when I tested it. The black Staedtler Triplis fineliner I tested smudged a lot, but the light blue color did not in the one test I did.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Unfortunately, I don't use many of these pens for casual writing and moreso to add nice lettering or pops of color in my journals that I use as creative outlets. Again, I prefer gel pens for longer-form writing.
I'm not 100% sure if this book has the new Tomoe River S paper or not. I assume it does since it is a 2023 notebook, but again, I don't know for certain. I've seen that the new Tomoe River S paper smears less than the older Tomoe River paper with some pens in tests I've watched, but I don't have anything to personally compare to what I'm using. It's a bit of a bummer if this is the supposedly current version of the paper that I can't really use my favorite pen in this book because the ink stays wet on the page for so long and is likely to smudge.
I also tested a few Mildliner pens and Tombow Dual Brush Pens to see if there was ghosting or bleeding from those. Happy to report no bleeding! Though, I didn't layer the colors much, so I might test the threshold for bleeding or warping of the paper at a later time. The little bit of layering I did do for one of the Tombow pens did make the writing on the other side ghost more obviously (I'd almost say it made the ink from the other side of the page bleed through, but I don't think that's quite accurate).
Tumblr media
I want to test some other things in this book, like sticking in ephemera, pictures, washi tape, and stickers to see how much bulk it adds to the book since I like adding a lot of things like that to my journals. I'm also curious how much I'll end up tearing the paper when I erase either pencil or the Pilot Frixion because I tear and crumple thicker paper than this when I erase pencil if I'm not being careful.
I do think the different colored grids are a neat feature for this little notebook and could work well for sectioning off different parts of your book for different functions (commonplacing, planning, daily pages, general notes, etc.). I don't know if I will end up doing that or not since I sometimes just put whatever I want wherever I want in journals lol, but it's nice that the option is there.
Tumblr media
(Image from Hobonichi's listing of the book)
I'll also say the grid spaces are much smaller than I expected. For some reason, I thought they were 5mm but are actually 3.7mm, which is apparently the same in A5 Hobonichi books. I'll have to see if I can adapt to such a small size since I'm used to 5mm grids in my Artist Loft dot grid journals.
I'll probably be using this notebook a lot at work over the next week or so since I jot down a lot of notes there, and I'd like to try doing some personal-ish entries with things I can stick into the book. I might use the different colored grids to mark off different sections of use for the book since the option is conveniently there, but we'll see. I'll try to gather some more thoughts in the meantime while I use the book more at length, and hopefully, I'll be able to come to a conclusion if I think getting a Hobonichi planner for the new year will be worth it for me.
