Here’s a missed Far Cry 5 opportunity for ya!
Imagine being able to actually explore and liberate the Veteran’s Centre. But it’s special.
Unlike other outposts, this one is the highest difficulty and one that is also creative. Like it’s a BOSS base guys. Jacob’s base!
(Kind of like Pagan and his governors' bases in Far Cry 4)
Chosen! Judges! Flamethrowers! Stealth! Explosions!
What happens if you're spotted while sneaking around? "ONLY YOU!" (Better take out those speakers!)
Hell, you could have given this treatment to any of the other Seed's "main" bases (Seed Ranch for John, either Jessop Conservatory or Eden's Convent for Faith). I would have included Joseph's Compound (for obvious reasons) but given it's the last location you go back to at the end of the game for Joseph's boss fight, probably not.
Additional add-on: John actually trying to get his Ranch back, or the Seeds actually trying to get their outposts back just like in Far Cry 4 (I LOVED THAT GAME MECHANIC! It was just realistic)
I don't know, I just think it would be pretty neat.

inside st francis veteran centre
theres a whole ass nother room! My guess is that they were planning on actually having the centre be an outpost like john’s ranch, but the place is fuckin huge and I guess they scrapped that idea.  There’s some random floating items like a chair, radiator and floor rubble too.
also found where jacob keeps pratt lmao (jacob was nowhere to be seen tho, maybe he’s under his gate)

2020 Best Nursing Homes - California
Tumblr media
ElderPerfect a leading publisher on senior healthcare across the United States, today announced the recipients of the Best Nursing Homes in California for 2020. These awards are designed to recognize providers based on their ability to consistently deliver excellence in the areas of Health Inspections, Quality of Residence Care, Penalties and Staffing. We’ve evaluated over 1,194 facilities, of which 324 (29%) met our top rating. This report marks the Gold Standard in terms of care for seniors. 0 Ranked Best Facilities  5/5
US Standard vs. Best Facilities
Average Number of Beds: 106 vs 95 Average Occupancy: 81% vs 83% Average Health Inspection Rating: 2.82 / 5.00 vs. 3.90 / 5.00 Average Government Rating: 3.01 / 5.00 vs. 4.49 / 5.00
Rating Methodology
Health Inspections Every year, the government assigns inspectors to conduct a formal review of nursing homes for regulatory purposes to meet the mandates outlined for Medicare and Medicaid, this aims to measure and improve the safety of residents across providers. Facilities may also be inspected when complaints are submitted or based on a reported incident. When noncompliance is identified, the facility is served a citation that indicates which regulation that was identified, along with the severity of the incident. Nursing homes are subsequently required to execute a program of resolution in order to meet compliance. Some scenarios require enforcement actions to be applied, such as a civil monetary penalty or withholding of payment(s), to incentivize resolution in a timely manner. Penalties Facilities are applied 2 types of penalties due to non-compliance / accumulation of incidents. Civil penalties are monetary fines that may be applied to a facility based on citations / infractions identified during a review. The severity of a penalty is defined primarily by the size and frequency of the infraction. Quality of Residence Care There are 3 types of resident care ratings, but for this exercise, we primarily focused on the overall quality measure rating. The quality measures (QMs) include 17 data points that are derived from clinical information reported by the respective nursing home and also from Medicare claims data submitted for payment. Ratings are calculated for the QM domain using the 4 most recent quarters for which data are available. A nursing home receives points contingent on performance on each measure (weighting distribution is not equal). Staffing Staffing research is submitted regularly by the facility and is adjusted for the requirement of the facilities residents. For each of registered nurse staff and total staffing, a 1 - 5 rating is applied according to definitions established for each category. These ratings are subsequently combined to assign an overall staffing rating. As an example, to get an overall staffing rating of 5 stars, nursing homes must earn a rating of 5 stars for both registered nurses and total staffing. Nursing homes could also be assigned a 1 star rating should they not have a registered nurse on-site daily, and do not submit staffing data, or which the data cannot be verified.

You and Whose Army
or;
What if the Seed family were actually good and Hope County is just really paranoid?
AU fic with slow burn Jacob Seed/Staci Pratt, and not-so-slow-burn John/male!Deputy in the background.
Keeping it on tumblr for now because AO3 creates scary ~commitment~ and I just want somewhere to share it with my FC5 buddies (especially you, @avaleahblog). I have not abandoned my Fallout fics. No content warnings for this chapter but I’ll flag ‘em up as necessary.
1
Pratt hasn’t been out to the St Francis Veteran Centre in years, not since he was a rookie and got called out to deal with a vagrancy complaint. The place had been long abandoned back then, the courtyard choked with weeds and faded trash. Inside it had stunk to high heaven. Bird and animal shit and the remains of campfires caked the floors.
Today as he walks up the gravel road to the gates, it’s like stepping back into another era when the hospital was open and thriving. The front court is visible, for one thing. No ivy or knotweed strangling the iron gate, and the paving beyond is level and clean.
The new owner is one Jacob Seed. Pratt’s never officially met him, though he’s seen him around now and again. Seed and his family—two brothers, plus an unknown number of hangers-on—rolled into Hope County a few months back after buying up a suspicious amount of property. The Sheriff’s Department started getting calls soon after. Just the odd one at first, but the longer the Seeds take root on this land, the more the locals are reacting against their presence.
Most of the attention is on Joseph Seed, the long-haired preacher who bought up half the island on Silver Lake and is setting up some kind of hippy commune there. Rumour has it he’s building a chapel, but in the meantime he holds open services a couple times a week in a big white tent on his land. Folks started going along out of curiosity at first, looking to sniff around what this weirdo and his barefoot harem were up to. Probably hoping there’d be naked dancing around maypoles or some such to tide them over in gossip until winter. But whatever Joseph has to say seems to be connecting with people, because almost as many locals love him as hate him now. Of course, that’s only made family members more concerned. There’s already accusations of brainwashing and devil-worship flying around.
While the Sheriff’s Department isn’t taking such nonsense seriously, there have been enough calls to the station by now that Earl Whitehorse finally agreed to address the issue. It’s been a slow couple of days, so Earl tasked his deputies with visiting various Seed family properties to cast an eye over things. Staci isn’t over the moon at being sent to St Francis’, but Jacob’s property is at the farthest reach of the county and he’s the only one who can pilot the chopper. He casts a glance back at where he left it—set down on the grass at the point of the little lake out front of the building—then sighs and pushes through the gates.
The courtyard seems deserted. There’s a new-looking Jeep with Montana plates parked near the gates, and a couple of mud-spattered ATVs further back, but no one attending them. Over in one corner is a stack of rusting bed frames and other trash, leftovers from the hospital’s former life. Pratt strolls past a dried-up fountain towards the front doors. The weather is warming up, and the prickle down his spine and under his arms makes him wish he’d left his jacket in the chopper.
Pratt lifts the brass knocker on the lobby door. His four sharp raps cut like gunfire through the hush of the valley. He turns from the door to wait and idly examines the plastic-wrapped pallets standing by the entrance. Masonry paint, sacks of cement, plasterboard sheets. Most likely ordered from out of county judging by the volume. Pratt raises an eyebrow at the huge spools of razor wire.
A couple of minutes pass, and he knocks again.
“Hello?” he calls out, but only his own voice echoes back off the high walls around the Centre.
He considers trying the door and hollering inside, but the locals he’s talked to who had run-ins with Jacob Seed have described him as anything but friendly, so he decides against it. He wanders along the ground floor instead, hoping to catch a glimpse within. The windows on this level are guarded by iron bars on the outside and dark blinds drawn inside. It seems a waste of time and fuel to fly out here for nothing, so he turns right when he reaches the corner to make a clockwise loop around the building. Along the western wall is a row of large boxes, each one almost as tall as he is, covered over with green tarps. Staci lifts a corner up to peek underneath. It’s not a box at all, but a metal cage. The kind you might keep a vicious animal or, say, a prisoner of war in.
“Great. Not disturbing at all,” he mutters to himself.
There’s more junk heaped up ready for a bonfire in back. Open dumpsters stuffed with dead weeds and other garbage. Still not a soul to be seen.
On the back wall of the hospital Pratt finds a window left uncovered. It’s barred like the others, but when he cups his hands around his eyes and leans in, he can make out the gloomy interior.
The room within is mostly empty, just a few boxes near the door and a folding table with paint trays and rollers. If Staci smushes his face to the bars and peers all the way to his left, he can see through an open doorway into another room, and in there…
“Oh, shit.”
The section of wall he can see is lined with racks, and on those racks are guns. Lots of guns. Identical assault rifles occupy one full rack, while the one beside it is harder to make out but he thinks he sees shotguns and a large hunting bow. In a glass-fronted cabinet under the racks he can make out the dark shapes of pistols against a red backing cloth.
He shifts from foot to foot, wondering whether he should take out his phone and try to get pictures. But he’s not supposed to be here, at least not sneaking round the back of the property like a burglar, and he’s wary of taking away any evidence he might regret later.
Suddenly, all he wants is to get back to Fall’s End. He heads back the way he came and crosses the courtyard at a brisk pace. He glances back only once he’s halfway along the path. The hospital’s yellow walls are catching the late afternoon sun, and Staci can’t help but marvel at what a beautiful spot this is, nestled in its own lush, wooded valley with the vast wall of Monument Mountain curving around it like protective arms, and the lake reflecting the clouds. It’s a damn shame it’s been bought up by a family of crazies.
He jogs up the grassy rise to the helicopter and around to the side. As he rounds the tail end he stops short, boots skidding on the damp grass.
Jacob Seed is sitting in the cockpit.
One foot on the landing skid and the other in the opening, his ass parked on the pilot’s seat as though he belongs there. A sleek black rifle leans against the body of the chopper within easy reach. He’s holding a rosy red apple in one hand, turning it slowly as he strips the peel into a long spiral with a pocket knife. In a holster at his thigh is a much larger hunting knife, black and menacing against the faded blue of his jeans.
“Evening, Deputy,” he says at last, not looking up from his apple.
Staci shuts his mouth and swallows painfully, throat suddenly parched. He tries to calm himself, squeezing his already sweating hands into fists at his sides. It’s fine. Just because Seed chanced upon the helicopter doesn’t mean he knows anything else. Staci glances at the expensive scope on the rifle, and gets the uneasy feeling that perhaps he’s seen everything.
“Mr Seed,” Staci replies. It sounds stupid coming out of his mouth; makes him feel like a kid addressing a teacher. But he doesn’t know the man well enough to call him Jacob. Maybe he should have just called him Seed; he’ll remember that for next time. At least he didn’t call him Sir.
He takes a few steps closer to the chopper, but Jacob doesn’t move.
“Do you mind?”
“Mind what, exactly?” Seed sounds bored as he finishes peeling the apple and lets the ribbon of red skin drop to the grass. He looks up at Staci then, and his eyes are a clear, vivid blue.
Pratt has never seen him up close before, and it’s hard not to stare at his scars. The ones on his face are most distracting simply due to their placement. His right cheek is marred worse than the left, pocked and mottled by what Staci assumes is a burn. The meanest scars are on his arms, angry red splotches against faded pink-brown, as though already marked skin has been injured again recently. As though his first trial by fire hadn’t taught him enough of a lesson. The thought makes Staci even more anxious.
He forces his eyes back to meet Seed’s. “This chopper is property of the Hope County Sheriff Department,” he tells him.
Jacob’s eyebrows raise in feigned surprise. “That so,” he replies. He gestures with the pocket knife at the land around them. “Well, since all of this is my property, I think that means you and your chopper aren’t supposed to be on it without an invitation.” He fixes Staci with that bright blue glare. “And I don’t recall inviting you, Deputy.”
Staci clears his throat. He’s being challenged, but he’ll be damned if he makes himself look weak by apologising.
“We’ve had a couple of reports of strange activity on your family’s properties,” he says, tucking his thumbs into his belt loops. Everything he does feels awkward and transparent. It’s maddening, and more than a little embarrassing, but he doesn’t want to draw more attention by moving his hands again. He presses on. “I just came out to have a word, but you were nowhere to be seen.”
“You’ve found me now.”
Clearly the opposite is true.
Staci nods anyway. “Mind me asking what sort of operation you’re running out here?”
Seed completely ignores the question and takes a bite of apple instead, forcing Pratt to wait for his reply while he chews. He squints against the treeline thoughtfully and swallows.
“What exactly constitutes ‘strange activity’, Deputy?”
“A lot of trucks bringing stuff in from out of county. Construction noise around the clock. Blocking off footpaths.” He shrugs. “All sorts of little things, but add it all up and it’s out of the ordinary for a quiet community like this.”
“Wasn’t aware out of the ordinary was the same as illegal.”
Pratt exhales impatiently. “It’s not. But it’s putting folks on edge. Maybe if they had an idea what was going on, it would set their minds at ease.”
Seed shakes his head, still looking into the distance. “Doesn’t matter where you go,” he sighs. “People can’t mind their own damn business.”
“Come on now, Mr Seed,” Staci says. “If everything’s above board, what’s there to hide? What are you doing out here?”
“Why don’t you tell me,” Jacob says. “You got a nice long look around. What’d you find out?”
Shit. Of course he saw him. Pratt pauses, considering whether or not to admit what he saw.
“You have a lot of guns,” he replies. “Sidearms and assault rifles mostly, from what I could tell. Not your everyday hunting fare.”
“Oh, I have hunting rifles too, Deputy.”
Staci can tell Seed is loving every second of his discomfort. He isn’t even trying to make himself look innocent. All that tells Staci is that he’s arrogant. Seed’s brother may be a fancy lawyer, but that doesn’t make him or anyone in his weirdo family untouchable.
“You care to tell me why you need that kind of firepower?”
Seed takes another big bite of his apple. “Security,” he says around his mouthful.
Pratt shifts his weight to the other foot. “Security for what?”
“For my family’s property,” he replies. “My brother Joseph is very trusting, very patient. I’m not. I told him there were gonna be people in this county who wouldn’t want to see him succeed. You just proved me right.”
“Succeed at what?” Staci blurts out.
Seed is out of the cockpit and on his feet in one swift motion. For a big man, he sure moves fast. Pratt has to steel himself to stay put rather than backing up a couple of steps the way he wants to. The way Seed is expecting him to. Of course, he has to be taller than Staci, only by a couple inches, but he makes sure to flaunt it as he moves closer.
“Are we done here, Deputy…” He peers down at the name stitched above Staci’s breast pocket. “…Pratt?” The hard consonants grit out from between his teeth, cold and clear as ice chips.
They lock eyes for a few seconds. Seed knows exactly how intimidating he is with his bulk and his scars and those intense eyes, bright blue like a gas flame. Staci doesn’t have any of his presence, but he stares back anyway, keen to show the other man that he’s no cowering fool.
Eventually he nods his head once, holding the eye contact.
“We’re done.”
Seed steps back to retrieve his rifle. “I trust that I won’t find you trespassing on my property again.”
“As long as you don’t cause any trouble, I’ll have no reason to come back.” His attempt at a warning tone is laughable and they both know it, but all Seed does as he meets Staci’s eye again is tilt one corner of his mouth up ever so slightly.
“I’ll be sure to remember it.” Without taking his eyes off Staci, he says, “Here, Judge.”
Staci frowns in confusion, mouth opening to say What? when a blur of grey and white fur flashes past him.
“Jesus Christ,” he stammers instead.
The biggest fucking dog he’s ever seen bounds over to Jacob Seed’s side and sits, sniffing his hand before turning big yellow eyes on Staci. A long pink tongue like a slice of bacon lolls from its mouth. How long was that thing watching them? There are wolves in these mountains, and the monster sitting next to Jacob Seed is either one of them or a close goddamn relative. Heart hammering, Pratt makes a mental note to look up what the law has to say about keeping wolves as pets.
Seed leans his rifle across his shoulders and saunters off with the giant hound at his side. Staci is furious. He climbs into the helicopter, slamming the cockpit door too hard behind him, and quickly checks over the control panel in case Seed decided to fuck with anything. Everything seems fine. He’s relieved, but also disappointed he doesn’t have anything to pin on him. Jacob Seed is bad fucking news, and Pratt swears to himself there and then that he’s going to be the one to prove it.
He fumbles his headset on and fires up the chopper, scowling at the controls until he’s put air between him and the ground. As he tilts the craft in the direction of home, he glances down and notices Jacob still standing at the tree line watching him. Seed raises his right hand to his head in a mocking salute, and while he’s too far away to be sure, Staci just knows the bastard is grinning.

POSTCARD 01 @ Florence, Italy
The romantic city of Florence is a visual feast of Renaissance architecture, art and monuments. Famous historical figures from the Renaissance era (14th-17thC) such as Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Galileo and Donatello, emerged from Florence producing and leaving an incredible body of work that continues to move and inspire people today. Museums, galleries, cafes and restaurants are in every nook and cranny. And then, there's the food; gloriously filling, tastebud dazzling, tantalisingly aromatic. Every corner is an architectural experience from Corinthian columns, grand domes and endless arches to interiors adorned with richly-detailed frescoes and motifs. Filled with 2,000+ years of history, Florence began as a settlement in 59BC, established by Julius Caesar, the Roman Emperor for his veteran soldiers. It quickly became a commercial centre and a major crossroad between Bologna and Rome. Florence is currently the capital city of Tuscany with the highest population density in the region. In 1982 it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. The most iconic building is the cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore, otherwise known as the Duomo. Built between 1296-1436 in a Gothic style it towers over the city with its terracotta-tile dome visible from all of the nearby hilltops. The Piazzale Michelangelo across the river from the cathedral provides a magnificent view of the city of Florence and the Duomo. A stroll alongside the River Arno leads to the very popular Ponte Vecchio, translated as "Old Bridge". The bridge is a medieval arched bridge built in 1345 and at one time housed shops run by butchers, tanners and farmers. Now it is tenanted primarily by jewellers, art dealers and souvenir sellers. During WWII, at the behest of German officer, Gerhard Wolf, the bridge was spared destruction unlike the neighbouring bridges which were detonated in order to buy more time for the German retreat. Wolf was once a student in Florence and had a special affinity towards the bridge. The Florentine's made him an honorary citizen in 1955 and placed a plaque on the bridge in his honour in 2007. Some notable artworks that can be found in Florence are Michelangelo's sculpture of "David", a marble sculpture completed early 16thC; Leonardo da Vinci's oil and tempera painting "Anunciation" dating late 15thC; and Boticelli's tempera painting "The Birth of Venus" dating late 15thC. There is no shortage of paintings, sculptures, fountains or architecture to immerse oneself in but when rest is needed head for the nearest coffee bar and ask for a café macchiato. Italians traditionally stand at a bar to have their shot of coffee instead of sitting at a table before pressing on with their day. The Way of St Francis pilgrimage begins at the Basilica di Santa Croce, a 13thC Franciscan church located in the Piazza Santa Croce. The church is the burial site for Galileo (astronomer), Machiavelli (politician and diplomat) and Rossini (composer) and many other notable Italians. Dante was originally buried here but was later moved. His tomb, however, remains on site. A memorial plaque for Da Vinci (polymath) and memorial monument for Florence Nightingale (pioneer of modern nursing) can also be found here. Outside the church is a monument to classical writer, Dante Alighieri, built in 1865 by Enrico Pazzi. The pilgrimage trail is 312mi (550km) long and inspired by the life of St Francis of Assisi. Taking an ancient Roman route from Florence to Rome via Assisi, the trail finishes at Basilica di San Pietro in the Vatican City. The route travels past ancient ruins, through medieval villages, crossing mountain passes and valleys, making this pilgrimage perfect for nature lovers, history buffs and outdoor enthusiasts.

CANTLON: PLAYERS AND COACHES ARE ON THE MOVE
Tumblr media
BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - It's the time of year that moving companies love when it comes to the hockey industry. Coaches and players are both moving all over the place. Ex-Hartford Wolf Pack/New York Ranger Sylvain Lefebvre. After being hired as an assistant coach for the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets, he leaves the San Diego Gulls. Lefebvre is the second assistant coach to leave former Hartford Whalers' great, Kevin Dineen’s staff. Ex-Pack, David Urquhart, returned to Montreal to be the head coach at McGill University (OUAAA). Alex Tanguay, an Iowa Wild assistant coach signs with the Detroit Red Wings.
KRAKEN AND CHECKERS WORKING TOGETHER
The expansion Seattle Kraken announced they would have a dual affiliation arrangement with the Charlotte Checkers for their first season in 2021-22 while building a new facility in Palm Springs that's currently under construction. The irony is that current Seattle General Manager and Whaler great, Ron Francis, had a six-year relationship with Charlotte while he was with the Carolina Hurricanes. The Checkers were the Hurricane's AHL affiliates up until last season. They and are now in Chicago with the Wolves. The Kraken will likely send 8 players, but that number could climb to as many as 12 players to the Checkers. Francis has been operating at his North Carolina home since the COVID pandemic started. The team will supply the Checkers with an assistant coach who will likely become the first head coach of the Kraken's Palm Springs (CA) affiliate when they come on board in their brand new 10,000 seat arena in 2022-23. It will be the second straight year that the Florida Panthers will have a dual affiliation. Last season the defending Stanley Cup champions and current finalist, Tampa Bay Lightning, shared the Syracuse Crunch.
NHL DRAFT
The Seattle Expansion Draft is set for Wednesday, July 21 at 8 pm and broadcast on ESPN2 in Seattle. The entire NHL Draft is held and broadcast over two days, with the first round covered across the US by NBCSN. For the second year in a row, the draft will be done remotely. On Saturday, the NHL Network will broadcast rounds 2-7. NBCSN is going to be closing shop soon. The draft broadcast team will be composed of members of their staff and ESPN/Turner Sports, where hockey coverage is going to be moving forward, as well as TSN in Canada talent.
KARMANOS NO LONGER AN NHL OWNER
The NHL announced Carolina Hurricanes majority owner Tom Dundon completed his acquisition of the remaining minority ownership stake of Peter Karmanos. As a result, Dundon is now the sole owner of the team. The transaction formally ends Karmanos' relationship with the Carolina Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers that began in 1994.
AHL NEWS
The AHL Board Of Governors (BOG) approved and announced the sale of the Rockford IceHogs to the Chicago Blackhawks. Read more about that HERE. The AHL BOG then announced that the City of Abbotsford and the Vancouver Canucks had finalized the lease for the AHL team and that the Aquillini Investment Group (AIG) arena management portion of the deal. AIG is the parent company of the Vancouver Canucks. The Abbotsford Centre is a multi-purpose entertainment and sports facility. Aquilini Investment Group will manage staffing, event bookings, ticketing, and food and beverage management.  More on that deal HERE. Revenue sharing is also included in the contract. The city benefits from enhanced financial gains by sharing profits if there are an average of 5,000 tickets sold per regular season game.
MOVEMENT
Ex-Pack Brian Gibbons (Salisbury Prep) leaves Lausanne HC (Switzerland-LNA) to play for Linköping HC (Sweden-SHL) next season. Adam Musil, the nephew of former Whaler and Ranger Bobby Holik, switches teams in the Czech Republic, going from HC Liberec to HC Dynamo Pardubice. Ex-Bridgeport Sound Tiger (now Islanders) goalie Kevin Poulin leaves IF Bjorkloven (Sweden-Allsvenskan) and signs a one-year AHL deal with the Laval Rocket. The UCONN Huskies will be getting defensive depth next season in Jarrod Gourley, a grad transfer defenseman from NCAA Divison-1 independent Arizona State University (ASU). He is the 51st NCAA grad transfer in the hectic college hockey off-season that has seen 108 players switch schools via school or grad transfers. Gourley is a left-handed shooter who hails from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He will be in Storrs in a few months. The 22-year-old is undrafted, and his younger brother, Connor Gourley, is currently playing with Camrose (AJHL) and will be at ASU next year. Quinnipiac University (ECACHL) added veteran coach Mike Corbett as the new assistant coach for the Bobcats. Corbett coached Alabama-Huntsville (WCHA) for the last seven years.
GUITE AND OTHER MOVES
Ex-Sound Tiger Ben Guité, who has been with his alma mater an assistant and associate head coach with the Maine Black Bears (HE) for eight years, did not have his contract renewed. Guite was named the interim head coach in May after the sudden passing of one-time Yale assistant Dennis “Red” Gendron. UMASS assistant coach Bill Barr was hired in early June as the new head coach. Sadly, the WCHA Men's Hockey conference is shutting down after 70 years. They lost seven schools to the new CCHA and saw the University of Alabama-Huntsville and the University of Alaska-Anchorage went dark this year. The University of Alaska-Fairbanks will play as a Division-1 independent next season. It's possible that in the next couple of years that the WCHA will return as a true Western-based US college conference. The WCHA women’s conference will continue as is.
PLAYERS CALLING MOVING VANS
Nic Pierog (Canterbury Prep/Sound Tigers) leaves the Indy Fuel (ECHL) and signs with HKM Zloven (Slovakia-SLEL) for next season. Leaving HKM, the defending Slovak league champion is ex-Pack, Allan MacPherson who departs for HC Kosice (Slovakia). Ex-Sound Tiger, Jesse Graham, leaves KalPa Kuopio (Finland-FEL) and signs with Augsburger (Germany-DEL). On his new team and also switching clubs is Marek Bartunas. He is the cousin to Matej Baca, the nephew of former Whaler Jergus Baca. The younger Baca is returning to HK 32 Liptovsky (Slovakia-SLEL) after being traded last year in mid-season. Ex-Sound Tiger Tomas Malec, who nears the end of his career at age 39, drops down from the Czech Elite League HC Brno to HC Brno-B (Division-3). Former UCONN Husky, Spencer Naas, departs Tranås AIF (Sweden HockeyEttan Division-1) for HC Amiens (France-FREL).
US WORLD JUNIOR TEAM NEWS
The 44-player tryout camp for the United States World Junior Team is set to play July 24-31 in the World Junior Summer Showcase at the USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan. Included on the roster for defense is Scott Morrow (Darien). He will head to the defending national champion, UMASS-Amherst (HE), in the fall. Morrow, has played for the Shattuck’s St. Mary’s program for the last three years. A WJC returnee from the Bronze medal-winning squad from last year is Jake Sanderson, the son of former Whaler great Geoff Sanderson. He skates for North Dakota (NCHC). Another returnee, but at forward, is Rangers draft pick Brett Berard of Providence College (HE). He is the son of former UCONN head coach David Berard, now the Director of Administration at PC. The elder Berard played as an undergrad, graduated from PC, and was an assistant coach for twelve years. He is no relation to former NHL’er Bryan Berard. There is also Matthew “Mackie” Samoskevitch (Newtown). He is heading to the University of Michigan (Big 10) in the fall and is NHL Draft eligible this year. Lastly, a sophomore from Quinnipiac University (ECACHL), Ty Smilanic, a draft pick of the Florida Panthers last year. The WJC tournament will run from December 26th through January 5th in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. USA Hockey named its roster and coaches for 2021 Hlinka Cup in Breclav, Czech Republic, and Piestany, Slovakia. There is just one local name associated with the team, Assistant Coach Jared Walman, from Hamden, Connecticut.
CHL DRAFT NEWS
The 30th annual CHL (Canadian Hockey League) Import Draft that involves the three Canadian major junior leagues was held early this year. Normally it's held a week after the NHL Draft. 85 players were selected, including 52 forwards, 26 defensemen, and seven goalies were chosen by 57 teams compromised of the OHL, QMJHL, and the WHL. The top three countries to have players selected were Russia with 16, the Czech Republic with 15, and Belarus taking 11. Just two players had Connecticut connections. UCONN defenseman Yan Kuznetsov, who left school two years early after signing an entry-level deal with the Calgary Flames, played six games with the AHL Stockton Heat, who, because of Covid-19, played their games in Calgary last season. Kuznetsov was taken in the first round (22nd overall) by the QMJHL Saint John (NB) Sea Dogs. Kuznetsov is 6’4 and 225 lbs. He will not be turning 20-years-of-age until March 2022. He is still Russia WJC eligible, so he could wind up in the Q getting valuable playing minutes depending on the organizational depth in Stockton. 6' tall defenseman David Spacek is the other player selected with a connection to Connecticut. He was taken in the second round (67th overall), is a right-hander, and was selected by the QMJHL Sherbrooke Phoenix. Spacek 18, is the son of former Beast of New Haven defenseman Jaroslav Spacek. He played last year for HC Litomerice (Czech Republic Division-2). He is signed to play for HC Plzen (Pilsner) in the Czech U-20 league this year and is WJC eligible. His father is the national team assistant coach and is also an assistant with HC Plzen with the Czech Elite League (CEL) team. He could play in the Q get playing time like Kuznetsov, but the NHL Draft in three weeks will likely play a factor in where he goes if he is drafted. Out of the East: Miles 7 - 9
Victoria Park - Airport Road - Sydenham Road - Queen’s Quay - Queen’s Bridge - Donegal Quay - Queen’s Square - High Street - Cornmarket
The seventh mile brings you into the grounds of Victoria Park. First opened in 1906 and landscaped by Charles McKimm, who also built the Tropical Ravine in Botanic Gardens, Victoria Park is home to a large variety of wildlife. Try and spot the swans, geese, ducks, herons and other water birds that populate the park. The route takes you around Conn’s Water, part of the Connswater River named for the last King of Castlereagh, Conn O’Neil who ruled as a Gaelic lord from 1601 – 1619. You can see his influence throughout East Belfast especially with Connswater Bridge and Connswater Shopping Centre. You can also see his inauguration chair in the Ulster Museum if you are looking for something to do after the race.
Tumblr media
This route also takes you past the poetry trail of Victoria Park; ten nature-themed poems written by local primary school pupils and etched onto metal plaques, though you likely won’t want to stop and read them at this stage of the race.
As you finish your 7th mile you come to the Sam Thompson Bridge, named for Northern Irish playwright, Sam Thompson. Specifically it was named for his controversial 1957 play, ‘Over the Bridge’ a story of a sectarian dispute in the Belfast shipyard. It was not performed until 1960, with the Ulster Group Theatre refusing to produce the play stating ‘It is the policy of the directors of the Ulster Group Theatre to keep political and religious controversies off our stage’. Fortunately the play became a huge success and allowed sectarianism in Northern Ireland to be displayed for the world to see. Across the bridge you will see The Short Brother’s building. The Short’s Brother’s first established as a company in London in 1908 and was the first company in the world to build production aeroplanes. They have had a presence in Belfast since 1936 and have concentrated all their production here since 1947.
Tumblr media
The Airport Road and Sydenham Road is now your path to the industrial revolution that shaped Belfast for most of the 20th century. You will see the entrance to Harland and Wolff shipyard as well as a close view of the famous Samson and Goliath cranes. You will also be able to see the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) and just beyond this building is Belfast Metropolitan College, which is on the newly named Bell’s Theorem Crescent, named for famed Northern Irish physicist, John Stewart Bell.
As you continue past the SSE Arena and Odyssey Pavilion and onward along Queen’s Quay, you will see some notable buildings across the river Lagan: The Harbour Commissioner’s Office building, the AC Marriot Hotel, the Royal Mail building, The Custom House building and the tallest building in Ireland, The Obel Tower. This skyline provides a living history of Belfast’s architectural development, from 1848 – 2018.
We finish this stretch of the race and say goodbye to East Belfast by crossing the Queen’s bridge. This bridge was opened in 1849 by its namesake Queen Victoria. A very ornate bridge designed by prominent architect Charles Lanyon, whose fingerprints are all over this city. The lampposts on this bridge are one of my favourite architectural pieces in Belfast. If you haven’t seen them up close before, I recommend you take this opportunity to appreciate their detail.
Tumblr media
Welcoming you to the city centre is the Beacon of Hope sculpture. Designed by artist, Andy Scott and completed in 2006 it represents the Angel of Thanksgiving, The globe at her feet indicates the universal philosophy of peace, harmony and thanksgiving, and has marked on its surface the cities where the people and industries of Belfast migrated and exported to. One thing to be thankful for is that there are just over 4 miles left to go.
As you run along Donegal Quay, you will again be surrounded by Belfast’s maritime history. Tedford’s ‘Ship Chandlers, Sail & Tentmakers’ and the adjacent warehouse where canvas sails were sewn will be on your left. in the 1850′s Tedford’s ships would be able to pull up right beside the shop to collect their supplies, arriving from as far as South America and the Caribbean, almost as far away as Ormeau Park will feel.
Tumblr media
Passing the famous ‘Big Fish’ or Salmon of Knowledge, you will then turn down Queen’s Square. This is a rather famous part of the city, but there are still a few elements that get overlooked, such as The Calder Fountain, erected in 1859 to honour animal rights activist and founder of the USPCA, Francis Calder. Calder was a veteran of the Napoleonic wars and set up the Belfast Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to better improve the existence of animals across Ireland. Notably he installed water troughs for horses and cattle that worked in the city, making a fountain a fitting tribute.
Tumblr media
If you look into Custom House Square you will see Speaker’s Corner, with ‘The Speaker’ sculpture, commemorating the great orators who spoke on the steps of Custom House, such as Jim Larkin who would attract crowds of thousands to his speeches for the Dock Labourers Union.
Tumblr media
As you run past the slanted Albert Clock and onto High Street, you will see a large mural of a chef by Australian street artist Sam Bates, AKA Smug. On the other side of the road is St. George’s church, built in the early 1800s on one of the oldest religious sites in Belfast it is a beautiful church and even is the home to a throne of King William of Orange.
Tumblr media
After High Street you finish your 9th mile in Cornmarket, formerly the Shambles, it was the centre for a great deal of market activity for Belfast in the late 1600s and early 1700s. It is also the site where Irish Revolutionary Henry Joy McCraken was hanged for treason. You will also see the Arthur Square Masonic Hall. Completed in 1869 it was one of the last buildings designed by Charles Lanyon, himself an influential figure in Freemasonry. The fact that this is the end of the 9th mile and the number 9 is sacred in Freemasonry is, presumably, a coincidence and not something to concern yourselves with.
Tumblr media
Come back next time as we head through the city centre and on westward.
Thanks again to everyone has read this so far and has donated to my fundraiser.

WIP snippets under the cut.
Finally got a WIP snippet of The True Sinners to share. Presented below... some of Silva's thoughts before Jacob shows off introduces her to John (a meeting which will go about as well as expected when published):
[Trigger Warning: Mentioned kidnapping and being held captive against will. Nothing explicitly detailed though. Also some subtle obsessiveness coming from our beloved eldest Seed]
Jacob opened the door that led out to the courtyard of the hospital, holding it back for her to walk through, gesturing outside with a short jerk of his head. A chivalrous act that often never failed to lift Silva's mood coming from anybody else.
It was the kind of consideration that Silva had admired in Paul, before he changed. A courtesy that Kamski never bothered to adopt, either believing that he shouldn't waste his strength on opening a door for someone when they also have arms or because everyone was on his shitlist for one reason and another.
The amount of doors she's had to stop from slamming against her face when following behind him was more than the number of people she's killed. Though that might change soon, she noted, glaring at the ginger as she passed him and his small smirk.
She fought the impulse to thank the man, and deterred herself from outright stabbing the man with what ever she could find, as a thoughtful act she would find generous being reduced to an unspoken and mocking jab at her captivity by Jacob pissed her off to no end.
The courtyard was exactly how it had been left during her attempted escape; the dirt paths that spiraled around the center, tire tracks indented into the ground, evidence of years of vehicles coming in and out of the hospital's grounds. The fountain was void of water just as the grass was dry with little colour left, and the flowers that did grow were strangled by weeds. The brick walls, erect high and surrounding Jacob's fortress, was enough to dissuade any thought of escape, an intentional psychological tactic reinforced by the looming iron gates, which unlike yesterday, were closed. To add to insult, there were more Chosen on the grounds, some in guard posts while others supervised their captives trapped in the cages she had once been in, as well as the recruits training.
More evidence that yesterday was a fluke I fell way too hard in.
The only major difference from yesterday was the grey car with two dark stripes going from the hood to the back that was parked at the side of the fountain. An opportunity for escape? It was tempting, but she knew better. After yesterday, she couldn't afford underestimating Jacob.
"Better luck with cracks and loose screws than with open doors, piccolo boa," the advice Paul had once told her rang through her head, and she hated the heartache that came with it. Shaking away the bitter emotions, she focused on what was ahead.
She could see Alexander talking to the car's owner, or at least, the owner talking to Alexander, as he seemed to be barely listening. In fact, Jacob's second-in-command seemed to be doing his best in droning out the words of the man.
Silva could see a short-haired blonde woman in similar attire to Alexander, if only less vibrant, speaking to some other Chosen she seemed familiar with.
Silva could deduce that she came with Alexander's terrible conversationalist, having never seen the woman in her captivity.
"Thinking you can dispatch my brother and his femme fatale?" Jacob asked behind her. Silva could imagine that he was hulking over her in height, if only by a few lucky inches. Some would see it as a disadvantage, but she knew there were benefits she could use against a taller enemy.
Despite this, Silva had bemoaned over not inheriting Father's tall genes after encountering foes whose height were unfairly above average, though she would never be caught dead in admitting this wish.
Silva scoffed at Jacob's words, shaking her head. He hummed, and said with an irritably pleased tone, "Yeah, I knew you were smarter than that pup."
She sneered at the words, but didn't turn to give him the satisfaction of seeing her reaction.
A large hand planted itself on her shoulder and urged her forwards, towards their guests, "Now c'mon. John's gonna need to have words with ya."
"About?" Silva asked, grey eyes glancing to look at his blue, legs forcibly moving forwards. Though from his stoic expression, she knew better than to expect a straight answer.
"You'll see," he replied, and she swore she could see his lips almost curl upwards into a smirk.
Looking towards this "John" as they approached him and Alexander, Silva privately stewed in frustration over Jacob's words. Cease your deceptive games you vague shit.
Last sentence for What Are The Chances? an alternate universe WIP set in a timeline where Silva became the Judge from FCND pre- and during the events of FC5. In this scenario, John and Jacob are lost. And yes... it's all John's fault:
Jacob had never once thought that any harm to come to his brothers would be deserved. However, after his insistent complaining, Jacob could not help but be amused by John swatting a branch away, only for it to recoil and smack him in the face. With gritted teeth, his younger brother asked, "How did we "miss a turn"? And better yet, how come we haven't found our way out of here? One would think you knew the county's layout like the back of your hand, Jacob?"
Face and voice neutral as he continued forward, Jacob answered his younger brother, "I know the mountains terrain John, and some of the valley's. I never once touched the woodlands in the Henbane. That was the Chosen's job to report to Faith about. And you were the one holding the map and giving directions in the car. You tell me."

Pope Francis Names Two New Auxiliary Bishops for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, (AMS)
Fathers William (Bill) Muhm, CAPT, CHC, USN (Ret.), and Joseph L. Coffey, CAPT (Sel), CHC, USN, to be ordained bishops by Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio on March 25
The Holy See announced January 22, 2019, that Pope Francis has named two new auxiliary bishops for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, (AMS). His Holiness elected Father William (Bill) Muhm, Captain, Navy Chaplain Corps, titular Bishop-elect of Capsus, and Father Joseph L. Coffey, Captain (Select), Navy Chaplain Corps, titular Bishop-elect of Arsacalitan.
Fathers Muhm and Coffey will replace Auxiliary Bishops Richard B. Higgins, who is retiring this year, and Robert J. Coyle, who was transferred last year as an Auxiliary to the diocese of Rockville Centre, NY. His Excellency, the Most Reverend Timothy P. Broglio, J.C.D., Archbishop for the Military Services, will ordain the two priests bishops in a solemn Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception on Monday, March 25, the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord.
Commenting on the appointments, Archbishop Broglio said: “The Bishop of Rome has once again looked with pastoral solicitude on the global Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, and recognized the need to assure adequate care of the 1.8 million faithful entrusted to her. I am delighted that both candidates have accepted to serve in a new way. They bring vast experience and deep pastoral solicitude to their new role.”
Father Muhm said: “I’m greatly honored and humbled to be chosen by our Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Father to be a bishop of the Universal Church and an auxiliary bishop of the AMS, which provides Catholic ministry and spiritual services to VERY important Americans: service members, members of their families, cadets and midshipmen, civilians stationed overseas, and veterans at VA Hospitals.”
Father Coffey said: “I am humbled and honored to have been chosen by the Holy Father, Pope Francis, to assist Archbishop Broglio in his duties as the chief shepherd for the AMS. I am extremely grateful to my three shepherds from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, Anthony Cardinal Bevilacqua, Justin Cardinal Rigali, and Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, who have given me the necessary permission to serve on active duty in the US Navy Chaplain Corps for these last 17 years.”
Here follows additional background information on the two bishops-elect.
Bishop-Elect William (Bill) Muhm
Bishop-Elect William (Bill) Muhm, son of the late James and Anne Muhm, was born in Billings, MT, in 1957 and raised in Denver, CO. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.) in Business Administration from Colorado State University in 1980. He attended Officer Candidate School (OCS) in Newport, RI, and was commissioned an Ensign in the Navy Supply Corps in July 1981. After graduating from Navy Supply Corps School, he served aboard USS BELLEAU WOOD (LHA-3), making two Western Pacific (WESTPAC) deployments, and an assignment to the Naval Air Engineering Station in Lakehurst, NJ. After release from active duty, he worked as an accountant. From 1986-1989, he also served as a Navy Reserve Supply Corps Officer.
In 1989, Father Muhm entered the minor seminary for the Archdiocese of New York, under the Co-Sponsored Seminarian Program (CSP), a vocations partnership between the AMS and participating U.S. dioceses and religious communities. He graduated from St. Joseph’s Seminary (Dunwoodie) in Yonkers, NY, and was ordained a priest in 1995 by John Cardinal O’Connor. Father Muhm served in the Archdiocese of New York at parishes in Ossining and Staten Island. From 1996 to 1998, he served as a Navy Reserve Chaplain with Fleet Hospital 22.
In 1998, Father Muhm returned to active duty as a Navy chaplain. His assignments included Naval Air Facility Atsugi, Japan; USS WASP (LHD-1), making an extended post-9/11 deployment in the Arabian Sea; postgraduate studies at Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley, CA; Training Support Center Great Lakes, IL; 1st Marine Division, deploying to Anbar Province, Iraq; U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD; USS BONHOMME RICHARD (LHD-6)/CTF-76, homeported in Sasebo, Japan; 2nd Marine Logistics Group, Camp Lejeune, NC; and II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune. Father Muhm retired from the Navy on May 1, 2018.
Bishop-Elect Joseph L. Coffey
Bishop-elect Joseph L. Coffey, son of the late Dr. William F. X Coffey, M.D., and Roseanita Schubert Coffey was born in Rochester, MN, on May 31, 1960. He is the fifth of nine children and the proud uncle of 46 nieces and nephews and 12 great nieces and nephews. He was raised in Philadelphia and is a life-long fan of all the Philly sports teams.
Father Coffey graduated from La Salle University in 1982 with a double major in English/French which included a year of study at the Sorbonne University in Paris, France. After college, Father Coffey worked as a grade school teacher, a ski instructor in Switzerland, and in the automobile industry in Germany and Belgium for five years.
Heeding a call to the priesthood, he attended St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia, PA, and graduated with a Master of Divinity degree (MDiv) and was ordained in 1996 by Anthony Cardinal Bevilacqua. He earned a Master of Arts (MA) in Moral Theology, also from St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in 2000.
While still in seminary, Father Coffey was given permission by Cardinal Bevilacqua to enter the U.S. Navy Chaplain Candidate Program in May of 1992 with the rank of Ensign. He stayed in the Navy Reserve for the next nine years.
Following ordination in 1996, Father Coffey was assigned as an Associate Pastor to St. Katherine of Siena parish in Philadelphia, PA. After five years in parish ministry, he was given permission by Cardinal Bevilacqua for full-time active duty as a Navy Chaplain in September of 2001.

Ranked! Who Won the Premier League Transfer Window?
Tumblr media
Alosh K Jose And there it is! The shortened Prem transfer window has slammed shut. Premier League clubs can longer sign players. But with the European transfer window remaining open until the end of month. outgoings are still possible for the English top-flight clubs. With the Premier League due to start tomorrow, it is time to asses who had the best transfer window. And the worst. So straight to the rankings. 20. Tottenham hotspur
Tumblr media
Mauricio Pochettino did not get a single signing and is stuck with players he did not want. This time Daniel Levy could not pull off any last minute surprises which meant the Spurs are the only team in the league not to have made a single signing. And they are not better off with it. Spurs had nine of thier players involve in the last four of the World Cup and will invariably suffer at the start due to these late arrivals. An injury crisis is all what Mauricio Pochettino's team to undo any progress achieved during the last three years. And he is also stuck with Toby Alderweireld, Mousa Dembéle and Danny Rose, none of whom he fancies. Yes, disastrous. 19. Watford
Tumblr media
Troy Deeney and his co-strikers were an utter failure last season. They need to step up. What the Hornets desperately needed at the start of the window started was a striker. So it is all the more puzzling why they could not sign a top striker they needed at all costs. The fact that the three senior strikers in the Watford books have only managed to score a combined tally of 11 goals itself proves the what a kind of a season is they are up against. The permanent transfer of Gerard Deulofeu from Barcelona will help the club in the wings, but much more was needed. Nothing other than a desperate struggle against relegation is to be expected from Javi Garcia's men. 18. Cardiff City
Tumblr media
As usual Neil Warnock has trusted hungry Championship players to deliver for him. Bobby Reid will the main man of the new signings. Neil Warnock did most his business early in the window, signing four Championship players desperate to prove that they belong at the top table. Among them, Bobby Reid must start scoring goals galore if the Welsh outfit is the survive the Premier League. Kenneth Zohore was their top scorer last season. But he has scored only nine goals and it is unrealistic to expect to stay in Premier League with such a paltry attack. The deadline day saw the arrivals of  midfielders Victor Camarasa and Harry Arter, but the club remains woefully short of some Premier League experience and any real firepower upfront. 17. Huddersfield Town
Tumblr media
Huddersfield needed quality strikers but didn't get any. It will be up to Jonas Lossl to save the team again. The Terriers were the last potent attack last season, finding the net only 28 times. Despite the signing of a whopping eight players, their apathetic attack does not seem to have improved. And among those eight, three signings – Terence Kongolo, Florent Hadergjonaj and goalkeeper Jonas Lössl – were loan transfers made permanent. German World Cup winner Erik Durm's arrival will ad depth in the left-back position. It is not healthy or realistic to hope that the young forward trio of Adama Diakhaby, Ramadan Sobhi and Isaac Mbenza will fire all the goals Steve Wagner's team needs to survive. With teams around them vastly more ambitious in the transfer market, Huddersfield is due for a punishing second season in the Premier League. 16. Newcastle United
Tumblr media
WIth Mike Ashley unwilling to back Benitez up in the transfer window, it will up to the Spanish to find training ground solutions. Rafa Benítez wanted too strengthen the attack as they missed a centre striker so badly last season. Is Salomon Rondon the answer? Questions will remain. But the Magpies have signed Kenedy, Ki Sung-yueng and Fabian Schar has been signed earlier in the window. The Japanese striker Yoshinori Muto is an exciting addition although slightly less potent in front of goal than the Toon Army wanted. The deadline day signing of Swansea centre half Federico Fernande was offset by the long term injury to Florian Lejeune. As usual Newcastle ended the window showing a large profit on player transfers with the £22 million received via the sale of unwanted Alexander Mitrovic the biggest contributor. Newcastle may look stronger than last year on paper, but make no mistake, a relegation dogfight is looming in the St. James Park. 15. Manchester United
Tumblr media
Jose Morinho has spent his entire summer whining for transfers, but did not get what he wanted. Ed Woodward doesn't seem to be a keen listener. Because virtually everybody in the world heard Jose Mourinho's summer long whining for a centreback. The Portuguese manager did not get Harry Maguire, Jerome Boeteng or the other numerous centrebacks he wanted. Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant are the only additions to the squad at Old Trafford. It is simply not enough for a sustained title challenge. Manchester United and Ed Woodward must be doing more. 14. Burnley
Tumblr media
One time England No. 1 Joe Hart has washed up at Turf Moor. This season was always going to be tough one for Burnley and boss Sean Dyche as they have to juggle between the domestic and European competitions. Burnley does not have a large squad and had failed to significantly bolster it in the transfer window. But Dyche has has boosted his defence with the signing of Ben Gibson from Middlesbrough for a joint-club-record £15 million fee. Gibson will now be the designated backup for the centreback pair of James Tarkowsky and Ben Mee ahead of Kevin Long. Goalkeeper Nick Pope recently underwent surgery on a dislocated shoulder and Burnley has responded by signing Manchester City outcast Joe Hart. Due to this underwhelming transfer window, Burnley will have to prioritise either the Premier League survival or the European dream. It is virtually impossible to excel at both competitions with such a threadbare squad. At least it will be intriguing to see what Championship top scorer Matej Vydra is going to do in the Premier. 13. Brighton
Tumblr media
New signing Alireza Jahanbakhsh was a force of nature in Eredivise. But most of the recent Dutch imports have failed in England. Brighton's club record signing of Iran winger Alireza Jahanbakhsh was the headline move from the coastal club. Jahanbakhsh was the top scorer in the Dutch Eredivise last season and he should be able to ease the goal-scoring burden on the 34 year old Glenn Murray. In that sense, the signing of Florin Andone from Deportivo la Coruna shoud also help. The Romanian has scored 18 goals from 66 appearances in the last two seasons in La Liga which is tally not to be sniffed at. Midfielder Yvves Bissouma is also a talented youngster with plenty of room to grow. The signings of Bernard and Martin Montoya will help the defence. Yet there is a sense that Brighton needed a bit more investment in order to play in the Premier League for a third straight season. 12. Bournemouth
Tumblr media
Cherries Boss Eddie Howe has always trusted his veterans. It may be their undoing this time around. Eddie Howe has won the signatures left-back Diego Rico and promising young attacker David Brooks early in transfer window. The £25 million club-record, deadline day signing of Levante's Jefferson Lerma is also good news for the club as he remains a canny operator at the middle of the park. But where Bournemouth needed to shore up was the central defence as captain Simon Francis is now 33. They needed a faster and younger centreback but could not add one into the squad. Howe is known for his loyalty to the players who got him to the Premier League, but this could backfire this season. 11. Crystal Palace
Tumblr media
Wilfried Zaha stays. *cue relieved sighs* The headline act at Selhurst Park is not any incoming transfer, but Wilfried Zaha's stay. Because without Zaha, Crystal Palace is a toothless giant bunny. The permanent signing of Cheikhou Kouyaté will add some power and bite in the midfield while Viceente Guaita will rival longtime No. 1 Wayne Hennesey for a starting spot while Andrew Ayew will add an alternative option to Christian Benteke who was poor last season. The most intriguing addition is Max Meyer. Once hailed as the future of German football, something has gone horribly wrong in Meyer's career which is why he is in Selhurst Park and not Allianz Arena. But he is still only 22 and has a point to prove. 10. Sothampton
Tumblr media
Danny Ings is ready to get his career back on track. The South Coast club has improved themselves in the transfer market after being caught in a desperate relegation battle last term. The final day addition of Danny Ings will give the Southampton attack more verve and purpose. Ings will be hungry to prove his critics wrong after they wrote him off on the back of an injury ravaged tenure at Anfield. Having lost Virgin van Dijk in January, a decent centreback was always a requirement at St. Mary's and so they have signed Jannik Vestergaard. Angus Gunn, the young ex-Manchester City goalkeeper is  extremely talented and will fit into the Saints philosophy of buying youngsters and improving them. The signings of Mohamed Elyounoussi and Stuart Armstrong are well timed as the club aims to inject fresh blood into what was a sated squad last season. 9. Everton
Tumblr media
Both Andre Gomes and Yerry Mina failed to spark at Camp Nou. Goodison will be a new start for the duo. Until the deadline day, Everton hadn't done enough to have a place in our top half. But let's face it, Everton won big on the deadline day. Marco Silva's team added two high quality players from Barcelona in Yerry Mina and Andre Gomes. Both have not cut their teeth well enough for the Catalan giants. But Silva is an excellent training ground coach and will surely hope to resurrect the playing careers of the duo. The other deadline day arrival, Bernard will also add some much-needed wing play for Everton. With Richarlison already in the bag, Marco Silva will be confident he would not repeat ex-manager Ronald Koeman's miserable start last season. 8. Leicester City
Tumblr media
Man-mountain Harry Maguire will continue to anchor the Leicester back-line. At least for now. The former Premier League champions were under intense pressure from Manchester United to sell centreback Harry Maguire even in the closing minutes of the transfer window. But Leicester held their ground and are better off with that. With Wes Morgan aging and Robert Huth departing, a partner for Maguire was always the priority at King Power. In Turkish centreback Caglar Soyuncu  the Foxes’ defence looks healthy have their answer. Jonny Evans, signed earlier in the summer for just £3 million brings competition at central defence. Riyad Mahrez's £60 million departure was a blow, but not an unexpected one. The arrivals of Monaco winger Rachid Ghezzal and Norwich midfielder James Maddison are aimed at replacing at least some of Mahrez's creativity. So when Claude Puel says he is happy with the quality of his squad, there is no reason not to believe him. 7. Arsenal
Tumblr media
The Gunners fans have waited more than a decade for Patrick Viera's replacement. Lucas Torreira seems to be the man. Unai Emery has began his era as the new Gunners manager by addressing the multiple weak points of the team which crippled Arsene Wenger towards the end of his 22 year reign at the Emirates. Most importantly Arsenal have signed the forceful defensive midfielder Lucas Torreira from Torino. Himself no lightweight, the Uruguayan is the player the Arsenal midfield was crying out for the last decade. Sokratis Papastathopoulos has been a dependable cenreback for Borussia Dortmund for long and will bring his experience to the Gunners back-line. But at 30, doubts persist about the Greek's long term future at the club. Bernd Leno will rival the aging Petr Cech for the No. 1 shirt and Stefan Lichtsteiner is a proven winner. But still, there is plenty of problems at Arsenal's defence. With Laurent Koscielny set to miss the half of the season, their back-line looks less than solid. But they have succeeded in shifting a lot of dead weight. 6. Manchester City
Tumblr media
Riyad Mahrez has ended a drawn-out transfer saga by finally moving to Man City. The defending champions only added two names to the first team squad with the Algerian genius Riyad Mahrez arriving from Leicester City and Australian World Cup star Danielle Arzani from sister club Melbourne City. The latter will go to Celtic on loan. But it is not due to the lack of transfer market savvy City did not add more players. It was simply that they already had a perfect squad. Pep Guardiola could not get his hands on Jorginho as a tastier alternative to Fernandinho at deep midfield. Oh calamity! 5. Chelsea
Tumblr media
Kepa is now the word's most expensive goalkeeper ever. No pressure, then. Chelsea’s summer began with the stalemate between club owner Roman Abramovich which cost the London club precious time both in the transfer window and in the training ground. When Maurizio Sarri finally arrived, he promptly added his Napoli ward Jorginho to the squad. The midfielder will be tasked with implementing Sarri’s philosophy on the pitch. Thibaut Courtois's yearly saga came to end as he secured a £35 million deal to Real Madrid. His replacement Kepa Arrizabalaga was signed at at world record deal for a goalkeeper at £72 million. The former Athletic man is not perfect, but he is the future of the Spanish back line the next decade. The Blues also kept Eden Hazard in which will be the key factor that decide the season. Real Madrid's Mateo Kovacic comes in and those who regularly watched the Croatian will tell you what a dynamic midfielder he is. Overall, despite the early problems, Chelsea did what they had to in the transfer market. 4. West Ham United
Tumblr media
New head honcho Manuel Pellegrini has revolutionized West Ham's playing staff. With the appointment of Manuel Pellegrini, the Hammers have guaranteed themselves an entertaining brand of football. And their signings are testament for the added vigour. Most of the signings West Ham made were completed early in the window and hence relieving their fans of any deadline day nail-biting. They broke their transfer record to sign Felipe Anderson from Lazio. Once coveted by the biggest of European clubs, Anderson now has a stage to show he is as good as ever. The free transfer Jack Wilshere will add a bit of style to the West Ham football. Issa Diop and Andriy Yarmolenko will add quality in defence and midfield respectively. When the opportunity to sign Lucas Pérez from Arsenal and Carlos Sánchez from Fiorentina on the deadline day, the Hammers pounced. All in all, a happy summer at the London Stadium. 3. Fulham
Tumblr media
Once targeted by the European elite, Jean-Micheal is an absolute steal for the Cottagers. The deadline was a very busy one at Craven Cottage as they submitted offers left, right and centre. But it seems there was a method to madness at Fulham as most of the incoming players are quality signings. They have secured Timothy Fosu-Mensah from Manchester United, goalkeeper Sergio Rico from Sevilla, young attacking left-back Joe Bryan from Bristol City on the deadline day. Star striker Alexabder Mitrovic's loan deal has been made permanent too. With the earlier signings of Alfie Mawson, World Cup winner Andre Schurrle and one-time Barcelona target Jean-Michel Seri, Fulham seems to have done what was needed to comfortably survive the drop.  But just don't be fooled by Luciano Vietto's Atletco Madrid background, he was an absolute dud whenever he played for Atleti manager Diego Simeone. And they have signed £27 million club record signing André-Frank Zambo Anguissa. Yes, me neither. 2. Wolves
Tumblr media
The seemingly unlimited access to Jorge Medes' clientele had made the Wolves a formidable team under their Chinese owners. Armed with the Portuguese super agent Jorge Mendes, Wolves have stunned their Prem rivals by pulling off incredible signings one by one. Thanks to Mendes, the new boys have signed Portuguese stalwarts Rui Patricio and Joao Moutinho to go with Raul Jimenez and Adama Traore. The signing of Leander Dendoncker has not gone under the radar and the Belgian is capable to dictating play from the deep. Add the fact that they already houses the superb Ruben Neves, Wolves will be the dark horses this season. 1. Liverpool
Tumblr media
Jurgen Klopp's maverick personalty has drawn top quality players to Liverpool this summer. Without any doubt, Liverpool had a superb summer window. With the signing of Allison, the Reds finally have a top class goalkeeper. He will be huge upgrade from the hapless Lorius Karius. Naby Keita will be Liverpool's N'golo Kante but with added goal scoring ability while Fabinho brings in more options to the midfield which was not really top notch last season. Xherdan Shaqiri is another good signing which will ease the burden of the magnificent trident of Mohammed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firminho. Liverpool has addressed each of the weaknesses that plagued their team last term. They failed in signing Nabil Fekir, but it is still has been brilliant window for them. Our No. 1. CANTLON: PACK HITTING THE ROAD AGAIN
Tumblr media
BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT -  Both the Hartford Wolf Pack and the New York Rangers are embarking on critical road trips with both squads not running on all cylinders. The Rangers lost to the Chicago Blackhawks, 4-1, on Thursday night with scoring and team cohesiveness a trademark issue currently for both teams. The Wolf Pack's shoddy performance Wednesday night included another lackluster start to the game and has been the case the past three years and covering two different coaches and basically three different teams each of those seasons. At this point, it's on the players. They need to be prepared, and the youngsters who want to get to the NHL must show they are ready for prime time. This present Wolf Pack team is .500 (4-4-1-0) and with the exception of a couple of players, clearly not ready to make the leap to, "The Show." Dustin Tokarski's goaltending on Wednesday night was shoddy at best. For a solid AHL veteran, he was laconic and beaten easily on two of the three goals he surrendered in just 4:36 of action before getting the hook. Mazanec was slightly better, but two of his goals were eerily similar to goals surrendered by Magnus Hellberg when he flamed out here two years ago. Both netminders are very well compensated this season and the team was hoping they would be the rock on which they could build the foundation of the team as the younger players went through the expected growing pains. Wednesday's top line of Lias Andersson-Ryan Gropp-Mikael Lindqvist had a rough night putting up a combined minus-8 while the fourth line, with Shawn O’Donnell leading the way with two goals, finished a plus-5. Not to diminish a great effort by the fourth line, but when they are the best line on the ice, something is clearly very wrong with that picture. Expect Saturday's game, the first of the season against in-state, divisional, and franchise rivals, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, to come complete with some new line combinations and defensive pairings as head coach Keith McCambridge looks to shake things up to change the current fortunes that have seen the team drop three of their last four games. On Sunday, The Pack starts a second long road trip. This one consists of five games, but not like road trips of the AHL of yesteryear. Credit Patrick Williams of the NHL.com for researching and coming up with this beauty from the Baltimore Skipjacks, circa 1989-90. The Skipjacks covered 3,400 miles with eight games in eleven days. The team started with a Saturday night game in Glen Falls, NY against the Adirondack Red Wings. The next day they played a Sunday afternoon game in Moncton, New Brunswick. Then, at the end of the trip, they had a Thursday night matchup in Halifax and then a Friday night contest in New Haven. Tack in the time change from Atlantic Standard time, it’s miracle they arrived on time for the game. The trip concluded in Utica the following night. Baltimore then followed with a four-games-in-four-days jaunt. It's no surprise they didn’t make the playoffs that season. It's reminiscent of the great New Haven Nighthawks end of the season in 1991-92 with a Canadian Maritime road trip of eight games in eleven days. The trip started in Fredericton on Wednesday. A Saturday/Sunday pair in Halifax followed. It was on to Cape Breton on Tuesday; Wednesday in Moncton, Thursday and Saturday in St. John’s and then concluding on Sunday in Cape Breton. The Nighthawks lost to eventual Calder Cup champion Adirondack Red Wings in five games in the first round. AHL FUTURE The AHL will likely be adding two more Pacific Division teams in the next two years according to several sources. The expected announcement in early December that the NHL will grant Seattle an expansion franchise to bring the NHL to 32 teams with equally split conferences at 16 teams apiece. Seattle has started the renovation process of the Seattle KeyArena, with the announcement that they will be building a brand spanking new 180,000 square foot, $70 million, three-rink training facility, at the soon-to-be-renovated Northgate Mall. It will be called the Seattle Ice Center. The next piece will be their AHL team. The two most likely candidates are the Tacoma Dome which is located 30 miles south of Seattle. It's undergone a $30 million makeover that originally was priced at $21.3 million. The building last hosted hockey with the now-defunct West Coast Hockey League's Tacoma Sabercats from 1997-2002 and the WHL's Tacoma Rockets (1991-1995). The arena is the fourth largest in the US and seats 19,106 for hockey. It opened in 1983 with renovations starting this year. They have had five NHL preseason games, mostly in the 1980’s and two in the 1990’s. The last one was in 1996. The other candidate could be Everett, WA at the Angel Wings Arena. It is the current home to the WHL Everett Silvertips (2003-present). It's 40 minutes North of Seattle and the arena was opened in 2003 and seats 8,149. It's a perfect size for the AHL. The building is part of Spectra family of buildings who operate in the US and Canada, including the XL Center. Originally, the arena was known as the Everett Events Center and it was the Xfinity Arena up until a year ago when the Stillaguamish Tribe signed a 10-year, $3.4 million dollar naming rights deal to change it to the Angel Wings Arena. That new AHL team will likely come in two years. The Vancouver Canucks will likely move from Utica after this season, the last of their five-year lease. Utica has been a model AHL citizen. It's very well run and did everything you can do to make it a good place for prospects. The combination of geography and money make it likely the Canucks make a true Pacific rival coming into the NHL while saving money on its AHL recalls when they move the farm team closer to home. Canucks owner Francis Anquillini has hinted that they are looking at Abbotsford, about 45 minutes from downtown. They exited the AHL five years ago after a disastrous run with Calgary that saw the city write a check for $5.5 million for the Flames to leave. The Abbotsford Entertainment & Sports Centre is another Spectra run facility that holds 7,046 seats for hockey - again, perfect for the AHL. The other possibility floated by Acquillini is the now vacant, and the original Canucks home, the PNE Coliseum. It was built in the late 1960’s. The WHL Vancouver Giants moved out two years ago to a smaller arena in nearby Langley, BC. So if they go to the PNE Coliseum, the Canucks will have to get new chillers or repair those that have not been in operation for two years. They'll need to renovate the locker rooms and training facilities and section off the seating as well as fix up the building. It seats 16,281, far too large for AHL hockey. The mayor of Abbotsford, Henry Braun, is on record as saying he wants the Canucks AHL team to come to Abbotsford. It looks like they will come to some sort of satisfactory lease arrangement for both sides. The AHL Pacific Division travel only plays 68 games which makes it much more palatable to return the AHL to Abbotsford. Seattle’s new team nickname is down to the final two - Sockeyes and the Totems. The Totems was the name of the old Western Hockey League franchise (1958-1975) and in this PC era will likely raise a ruckus with the use of a Native American symbol. Sockeyes refers to the fish and longtime Maritime fishing industry in the Pacific Northwest. Very shocked Sea Lions didn’t make the cut in the Seattle Times name the team contest. Canlton's Corner endorses Sockeyes with no black uniforms. NOTES: Ex-Pack, Ryan Sproul’s, odyssey for finding an AHL place to play is on its third stop. He spent training camp with Stockton was released, signed with the Toronto Marlies, played one game got where he got an assist and was let go from PTO deal. He is now with the Laval Rocket on a PTO deal. Paul Carey (Salisbury Prep) is sent to Belleville by Ottawa. Alex Biega (Salisbury Prep) is recalled from Utica by Vancouver. Ex-Sound Tiger, Matt Finn, was assigned to Florida (ECHL) by Grand Rapids. Shane Starrett (South Kent Prep) is reassigned by Bakersfield to Wichita (ECHL). Former Wolf Pack, Rory Rawlyk, opts not to play in Poland and signs a deal with Evansville (SPHL). Enfield’s Robbie Baillargeon departs Tulsa (ECHL) and signs with Milton Keynes Lightning (England-EIHL). Ex-Pack, Danny “Monte” Kristo, finally officially leaves Brynas IF (Sweden-SHL) and signs with HC Rapperswil-Jona (Switzerland-LNA). Ex-Pack, Zdenek Bahensky, signs with ASC Corona Brasov (Romania-MOL). Ex-Pack and Sound Tiger, Joe Combs, signs with EHC Kloten (Switzerland-LNB). Forner CT Whale, Wojtech Wolski, had his contract brought out by Metallurg Magnitogorsk (Russia-KHL) and is looking to Switzerland or maybe another KHL team. Former New Haven Senator, Harijs Vitolins, is doing some work as an assistant coach for HK Kurbads (Latvia-LHL) during the Continental Cup tournament. Last year, he was with KHL Gagarin Cup champion SKA St. Petersburg (Russia-KHL). Jordan Sims, son of the former Hartford Whaler and Nighthawk, Al Sims, was traded from Cincinnati (ECHL) to Greenville (ECHL). Former Springfield Falcon, Trent Vogelhuber, retires, and become the assistant coach for Cleveland (AHL) where he played for three years. He might be the first player to retire after going through training camp and had been assigned to San Antonio. Another ex-Falcon, Yann Sauve, signs with Medvescak Zagreb (Croatia-EBEL). Former UCONN defenseman, David Drake, was reassigned to Reading (ECHL) by Lehigh Valley. Ben Sanderson, the son of former Whaler, Geoff Sanderson, has been changing addresses frequently lately. He started the season with Dubuque (USHL) and left after two games. He heads back to play with the Okotoks Oilers (AJHL) for a game before being traded in a Junior A interleague deal to the Vernon Vipers (BCHL). Vernon’s head coach and Director of Hockey Operations is former New Haven Senator and AHL All-Star defenseman, Mark Ferner. Sanderson is a 2019-20 commit to Colorado College (NCHC) Josh Primeau, the nephew of ex-Whaler, Keith Primeau, is loaned for the rest of the season from HC Rapperswil-Jona (Switzerland-LNA) to HC Thurgau (Switzerland-LNB).
