MOON 5
Tumblr media
Current knew he was meant to be paying attention to Sand and Shell. He should be doing what Splash was doing, sitting with his tail curled over his paws, ears pricked, listening to the two older cats’ instructions. And yet, his gaze kept slipping away from them, down towards the tidepool at their paws. No way. Was that…?
He leaned down, ignoring Shell’s annoyed growl, to peer more closely at the water. He watched, trying to keep his eyes from popping out of his head as the creature became visible. It was! He’d been right! It was another one of those awful octopi. Disgusting, and yet mesmerizing.
“Splash!” He growled, jabbing the tall tom in the side. The older apprentice looked down, annoyance curling his lip until he saw what Current was gesturing at with his tail. “Look at it!”
Splash’s eyes went wide, his jaw dropping in that same mix of disgust and fascination that Current felt every time one of these things crossed his path.
“What is it?” Splash hissed softly, Sand and Shell both utterly forgotten in the thrill of seeing such a disgusting creature.
“It’s an octopus,” Current hissed back, “like I told you about last moon, remember?”
“I remember,” Splash breathed, “but I didn’t think it would look like that!”
“Isn’t it so gross?” Current growled, “you know, Sand told me that this thing used to be a cat, once. Then it got cursed for breaking its vows, and was turned into this thing.”
“No way!” Splash’s exclamation did away with the last remaining semblance of subtlety.
“Are you two even listening?” Shell growled, “you’re supposed to be apprentices, not kits on their first trip out of the nursery!”
But neither tom was listening to her rant, too consumed by their fascination with the slimy, pink beast.
“So Sand said that once, there was this ship’s cat…”
AN: And we're done with Moon 5! This might not be all that important to the story, but it was too great a moment for me not to include it.

Dying Apprentice Ceremony
This ceremony is rare to come across, and one no leader ever wishes to perform. However, all cats have the right to perform this ceremony, if a leader is not present.
This ceremony gives a dying apprentice their warrior name, regardless of age, of which they are recognised by in Starclan.
Not every apprentice gets this ceremony, not even most, but there have been cases of this ceremony being used.
Sweetflower's ceremony, performed by Sunstar, though she just barely survived
Badgerfang's ceremony, performed by Flintfang during the siege of Windclan camp, named after his mentor.
Ravenfern's ceremony, performed by Greystripe in the barn, named for his sister.
Splashstream's ceremony, performed by Leopardstar during the clans arrival at the lake, named after her brother.
And, of course, Losthope and Dogbite's ceremony, performed by Bluestar after the dog maul, and historically considered one of cruelest apprentice ceremonies in recent times. But, as all cats know, they both survived and were correctly renamed to Brightheart and Swiftheart, named after eachother.
After Bluestar's actions, it was agreed upon by starclan and the clan medicine cats that this ceremony can be overturned if the name is deemed cruel. She was not the first cat to use this ceremony in such way, but the time before her's was lost to time, and faded from the clans' memory before she was even born.
Of course, there are some that remember, but their spirits aren't on the starry side of the borders.

MOON 1
Tumblr media
Day followed day, night followed night, and slowly the survivors began to recover from the shipwreck, building their home amongst the splintered wood of the wreck. Shell found herself grateful for Tidechaser’s presence, and the knowledge of the area that he brought to the survivors, though the tom always seemed... distant. it was odd, as he had been the one to ask to live among them, and yet he behaved as though they were imposing on him at times. At least he seemed to be getting along with Foam, one of the younger toms that had survived the wreck. After much consideration, Shell had decided it would be wise to have the older, more experienced cats train the younger ones. None of them other than Tidechaser knew the area particularly well, so she had asked the pale tom to teach Foam. He had agreed calmly, showing no sign of pleasure or annoyance at the task. She had decided to take that as a good sign.
Over the course of the moon, Foam had grown into a confident, intelligent cat. He contributed as much to the group as any of the older adults, and Shell felt it was time to honor that skill somehow. On a bright, sunny morning in newleaf, she called the survivors together before they went off for the day. It took a while for the cats to gather around their designated meeting place beneath the beached mast--Shell had heard some of the cats referring to it as the Tallmast recently, and she had to admit she liked the name.
As the survivors settled around the mast, Shell cleared her throat. “I’m sorry for calling you all together on such short notice. I thought... well, I realized recently that Foam has been doing as much for our group as any cat.” The big tom shuffled his paws with embarrassment. “You all know that I asked Tidechaser to teach him, but I feel that he has learned enough to look after himself as a full member of our group, without any specific supervision. His...apprenticeship is at an end. Foam, we thank you and honor you for your intelligence and pragmatism, and we welcome you as a full member of our group in your turn.” Shell wasn’t sure where exactly the words came from, but they felt right somehow.
Foam dipped his head graciously, his bronze eyes shining. “Thank you Shell, for your kind words. And you, Tidechaser, for teaching me so much.”
The gathered cats let out a few congratulatory meows, but as the noise died down, an annoyed hiss broke through the cheerful mood. “So he gets acknowledged, but I don’t?” Splash was lashing his tail back and forth with annoyance, the fur on his shoulders prickling. “Will I have to remain under your paw forever?”
Shell stifled a sigh. Splash was... well, he was defensive and a little bit selfish at times. He had a good heart, but he only seemed interested in doing the things he wanted to do. Shell had hoped that, by taking him on as her own apprentice, she could teach him to take a little more responsibility, but she had had little success thus far. “Splash,” she meowed calmly, “Foam is older than you by moons. Rest assured, your time will come, and Foam will still be expected to contribute to the group, same as you, same as all of us. I simply feel that he no longer needs direct supervision.”
“And I do?” Splash growled.
“You are a young cat and we are all in a strange new land with which we are unfamiliar,” Shell snapped, her patience waning. “My first priority is to keep you--all of you-- safe and alive. Like it or not, you just aren’t ready to go out without supervision.”
Splash held her gaze for a few heartbeats and then, to Shell’s surprise, sat down, his fur laying flat. So he is capable of reason, she thought wryly. Another thought struck her. “However, I do believe that it will be beneficial for you to have another young cat to train alongside. Current, come forward.”
The small ginger tom bundled his way through the small crowd, drawing a hiss of annoyance from Dustjump when he trampled over her tail.
“Current, I feel you are old enough to begin learning how to hunt and protect yourself as a member of this group. Sand will be your teacher--your mentor, until I deem you ready to act without supervision,” Shell announced. Sand, who had been huddled by the base of the Tallmast, gave a little start, and she heard a chirp of delight from him. Sand was very young to be training another cat, but Shell could not manage another apprentice in addition to Splash, and she didn’t feel comfortable asking Tidechaser to teach another cat so soon. Besides, Sand had proven himself intelligent and capable, and had taken to helping her lead the group without ever overstepping.
“Splash, though you are still training, it will be up to you to help show Current the ropes, to help him understand what will be expected of him,” Shell added. Splash puffed out his chest, seeming satisfied with this turn of events.
“Finally!” Current drew Shell’s attention back to him with his outburst. “I’ve been ready for ages now. What will we do first? Learn how to catch eels? Or maybe sharks? Ooh or will you teach me how to climb trees?”
Sand whisked his tail over the young tom’s mouth. “I think we’ll start with learning how to catch minnows from the tidepools,” he purred, his voice shaking with amusement.
“Tidepools it is!” Current gave a little bounce, his enthusiasm not diminished at all. Shell felt a tension leave her shoulders. maybe they really could make a life here. A good life, where they all looked after one another, learning and growing together.

Splashpaw and he father Fuzzcloud (formerly Duck Fuzzy). Every since her brothers death Splashpaw hasn’t been doing so well. They feel like their clan is hiding something from them about their brothers death. He couldn’t just be dead could he? And if they would go far enough to lie about her father wouldn’t they be alright with lying about her brother as well? Either way she’s been taking a lot of her anger out on cats around the borders.
