Hiya! Do you know of any good rpgs for fiction in the Sword and Sandal genre, or really anything that would fit a largely-historical game set in the ancient to late antique Middle East?
Thanks for everything you do!
THEME: Sword and Sandal
Hello Friend, I don’t think I found anything here that meets what you’re looking for exactly, but I think there are a few things here that are in the same neighbourhood of what you’re looking for. I’ve found a few Bronze-Age and Mesopotamian games that might interest you, as well as a setting in Ancient Egypt!
I know that there’s not a lot here that is likely to hit the mark that you were looking for, so I’m also hoping that folks who see this will add their own suggestions in the comments and reblogs!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Champions of Osiris, by Zadmar Games.
“King Osiris and Queen Isis once ruled ancient Egypt—until Set murdered his brother and usurped the throne. Isis was a powerful sorceress who used her powers to escape, but Set chopped his rival into dozens of pieces and scattered them across the land, preventing his resurrection.
With the aid of her sister Nephthys, Isis recovered the remains of her husband’s loyal bodyguards and retainers, imbuing their spirits with potent sorcery and granting them immortality. These fierce heroes began the formidable task of seeking out and gathering the lost pieces of their king’s corpse.
You are the “immortal champions.” You once swore to guard your king’s life with your own—and you did! Now you’ve sworn another oath: to destroy Set’s legacy and restore Osiris to the throne.”
The Tricube Tales System is a genre-neutral rules set that is meant to be easy to learn and great for short games. The designer has created countless scenarios for this system, with Champions of Osiris being one of them. Players receive karma tokens, which they can use to increase their chances of success, and gain by increasing their chances of failure. They also have a resolve track, which erodes with each failure, potentially removing a player from the scene if they aren’t careful.
This is definitely not a historical game, but it’s probably the closest to the “Middle East” inspiration that I was able to find during my search.
Into the Bronze, by Lantern’s Faun.
Into the Bronze is a RPG of sword, sorcery and sandals in Mesopotamia from the Bronze era.
The plains between the Tigris and Ephrates rivers hide silent, gloomy valleys where demons and lesser gods devise their evil plans. Defy the gods of Sumeria, behold the beginning of civilization.
This is a rule-set, but it doesn’t have much in terms of lore, which may be good if you have the kind of world you want to play in already in your head, but just need a framework in terms of player skills and dice resolution. Into the Bronze is inspired by Into the Odd, by Chris McDowell, renowned for its flexibility and simplicity. I think it would be very easy to take characters built in this world and then put them into a world like that of Undying Sands, which isn’t a game in itself but provides you with plenty of locations, encounters, and characters to fight, barter, and conspire with.
Fragments of the Past, by Dev9k.
Fragments of the Past is a rules-light roleplaying game set in a Bronze-Age world evoking the atmosphere of ancient tales and poems of the archaic Mediterranean, where conflicts are resolved on a roll of a d10 or a d100.
Experience the great tragedies, deeds, and ambitions of larger-than-life characters, dwelling in a world of sacred places and untamed wilderness. Pray and live according to the ancient customs of long-forgotten civilizations, if you dare.
Fragments of the Past is meant to emulate mythic and tragic stories from a world that could have been, a world with references to ancient mediterranean cultures, but its locations and peoples are uniquely named. This is a world where the Gods’ wills have visible effects on the world around them: this is most visible in Talismans - relics that became powerful because of their place in great stories and actions of heroes.
This is a game designed for long-form play. Your characters are built from a mix of quantifiable stats and descriptive abilities that point to the personality and narrative arc desired by the player. As the characters grow, they will primarily manifest new Epithets, which are specific areas of knowledge born from the characters’ experiences. When rolling to actively do something using an attribute, players pick up a d100. When doing something that involves luck, hubris or willpower, the player will instead pick up a d10.
If you want to check out this game before buying it, you can check out the free Quickstart, which has over 100 pages of lore and guidance to introduce you to the basics of this game.
AZAG, by Dank Dungeons.
"You must travel far, beyond the spider-haunted towers of Byzaron and the red mists of The Yielding Plain. The Sleeping Augur awaits, through azure pylons inscribed with sigils both beneficent and doomed.”
AZAG is a combination tabletop role playing game and five track instrumental album.  Featuring a rule system inspired by the likes of Fighting Fantasy and Troika! in a setting inspired by Lovecraft's Dream Cycle, Howard's Conan, and Smith's Hyperborea.
Treat with strange entities, battle against weird magics, and explore a world of mystery and wonder!
Looking at the inspiration and references for this game, as well as the rule system it draws from (Troika), I have a feeling AZAG is going to be extremely un-serious. This is not a game of historical realism, but of sorcery, action, and storage gods. Based on its source material, I”m also guessing that character creation is going to be rather simple, and survival is going to depend on your creativity more-so than the luck of your rolls. If you like your games dangerous and a little over-the-top, you might want to try AZAG.
2400 BC, by ozmodeuz.
"…at dawn a black cloud came from the horizon; thunderous with wrath. The seven judges of hell raised their torches, lighting the land with their livid flame. The earth cried despair to the heavens as daylight turned to darkness and the land was shattered like glass. For six days and six nights the tempest raged and gathered fury, and poured over the people like the tides of war. All sense and hope was lost, and the gods cowered in heaven…"
2400 BC is a hack of Jason Tocci's 24XX about rebuilding community in the aftermath of an environmental catastrophe, thousands of years in the past. It was inspired by Mesopotamian myth, particularly the Epic of Gilgamesh.
2400 BC explores a recent tragedy, devastating your homeland and driving you to fight for survival. It’s a small game that makes extensive use of roll tables to help generate characters quickly as well as provide a GM with quick ideas as to what kinds of opportunities and problems your characters will face. The character generation tables have plenty of options for making characters that aren’t necessarily good people, so I have a feeling survivability is a bit low.
All in all, if you want a quick to pick up game about catastrophe hitting the ancient world, this might be the game for you.

interest check for new project
Would anyone be interested in a CYOA digital zine? I’m thinking something that’s Stone Age fantasy in the same vein as Fire and Ice (1983) and the Planegea setting for D&D 5e—basically something that involves dinosaurs, mammoths, magic, undead, and an untamed landscape full of wonder and danger all at the same time in one glorious, anachronistic stew.
(I have a weakness for stonepunk fantasy settings, okay?)
The reader steps into the role of a shaman’s apprentice who is tasked with retrieving a ceremonial artifact from a dangerous location. Along the way, you will meet some enemies of your clan—do you attempt to parlay and make peace, do you sneak around them, or do you try to fight?
Likewise, you’ll also find a portal to a strange, poisonous jungle full of the ruins of a past civilization more technologically advanced than your own—do you stop to gather artifacts for further study, do you hurry past as fast as you can toward your goal, or do you begin a spell or ritual attempting to communicate with the spirits of those who once lived here?
I could go on. The point, though, is monster romance. The reader will meet three nonhuman love interests and get to travel with one of them + earn (or potentially lose!) their affection during this quest. There will be a plethora of endings to achieve.
Realistically speaking this is more of an RPG Maker project (or a visual novel) than anything else and I feel like I’m biting off a great deal more than I can chew for a first CYOA story—but aiming high is how you learn, right? So, I’m going to do it.
Tumblr media
Love Interests
First of all, I want to make love interests that are (mostly) original and not just creatures that are copy/pasted from extant modern cultures. Example: harpies come from Greek mythology, so I’m not really a big fan of them for this particular project, but I think a pterasaur-based monster person would be really fun.
Actually, you know what, I’m going to use that.
Tekka Stoneclaws (they/them) is a brightly colored, pterasaur-esque person who is a great seer and wielder of magic. They call upon the power of Sky, the mercurial deity of all celestial objects.
Meithe Half-Tooth (she/her) is a smilodon-esque person who has one broken front fang and fights her enemies through means of physical strength. She calls on the power of Stone, the stalwart deity of the earth.
Khirs One-Eye (he/him) is a theropod-esque person with a (potentially cursed) obsidian knife that he obtained through unkind means. He fights, lies, and betrays to make his way through the world, and calls on the power of Shade, the ever-hungry deity of midnight.
Tumblr media
That’s all I’ve got for now. Ofc it needs waaaayyyyy more work than this, but I’m really excited! I’ve never written a CYOA story before, so it will be a long time in the making, but I’d love to share the process and finished product here on tumblr. Please do let me know your thoughts!

Your tag of "necromancer bard" made me pause and start thinking about rolling a new d&d character based on wwx - can 5e bards do necromancy, or would I have to multiclass into wizard? Wizard who has proficiency with a flute? Ah the possibilities... 🤔
I have been thinking of rolling either WWX or LWJ as a dnd character ever since I watched the show. I mean, there’s the Art of Wuxia rpg (https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/312439/Art-of-Wuxia-Core-Rules) that might be better for Untamed, but I’m a dnd gal at heart, so.
For WWX, Bard for sure. Perhaps with a level or two of Ranger so you can lean into archery because lbr. But Jack of All Trades and Lore college skills give you that amazing WWX “I’m a genius at *everything*” flair. And Lore college also gives you more magical secrets, so pick Necromancy spells for that. Go with Animate Dead and Danse Macabre for all your fierce corpse needs.
Good bardic Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation spells: Bane, Dissonant Whispers, Crown of Madness, Bestow Curse (necromantic spell, available to Bards), Speak with Dead (same), Raise Dead (same), Eyebite (same), Resurrection (same).
Other good spells to take as part of your magical secrets: Circle of Death, Create Undead, Harm, Spirit Shroud (it’s Unearthed Arcana, but it’s For Aesthetics so I’ll allow it).
If it’s truly WWX based, get Hold Person and Vicious Mockery too, that’s perfect.
If you’re going for feats (if you start with a variant human, that’s one from the get go), get Skilled or Prodigy, because he’s a damn genius. Later on acquire War Caster. If you don’t lean into a level or two of Ranger, grab Weapon Master.
YES, I have thought about this extensively. Yes, I have builds for other characters.

Scumbag System - new animated series by the author of the Untamed
The title in Chinese of the novel translates to" The Scumbag Villain Self Saving System" which has been shortened to Scumbag System.
Tumblr media
This was the first webnovel for the author of the Mo Dao Zu Shi/ The Untamed and Heaven's Official Blessing, Mo Xiang Xiu and to some, it's still her most interesting work.
The protagonist is a young man who is obsessed with the Most Awful Web Novel Ever Written, and he enjoys spending hours online bashing the author and other fans. While in the middle of posting, he chokes on a steamed bun and his spirit is transported into the web novel, but rather than being put in the character of the hero of the novel, he's made the villain, destined for an awful fate unless he can change events to make life better for the abused hero.
What the protagonist doesn't realize is that while he's attempting to save his life (if he dies in the story he dies for good) the story is converting from a stereotypical 'stallion novel' aka male protagonist harem novel (the lead ends up seducing every single female character) to a boyslove story* featuring himself!
*we will see how far this gets due to Chinese censorship.
The novel is really fun for poking at all the tropes in Chinese fantasy fiction, including some that went on to be part of MDZS/The Untamed, and while the 3D animation is a bit clunky here (not as beautiful as Legend of Tang) it works because of the premise of this being similar to a video game (instructions to the protagonist appear in glowing screens you'd see in an RPG)
First Ep with english subtitles can be viewed here  (hit EN for english subtitles)
this is produced by Tencent, which has a YouTube channel, so hopefully it will end up there for easier viewing.

Tribes of midgard- Online Co-Op and Adventure with Viking Vibe
Midgard is an Action RPG and full of special items. This game needs survival skill in order to survive in defeating the epic Titans, onslaught of deadly spirits and gigantic brutes hel-bent who are trying to destroy the village. The tribe with up to 10 players will defend your village and save the world.
Tumblr media
This game developed by Norsfell and the publisher is Gearbox Publishing, released on 28 July, 2021. Gather valuable resources, hunt mythical beasts, defeat mighty foes, topple giants, and claim treasures with your tribe as you venture into the untamed winds of Midgard. The further you venture from the village, the greater the challenge and the greater the rewards. Both of which we need to combat the apocalypse’s ever improving minions. However, we must return before the sun sets in order to defend, craft powerful equipment and to fight the night attack.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The game will give a randomly generated map to the player, so the player will get a new experience with every new map or game. Also, in this game they do have classes for each special skill, for me personally I like to be in a warrior class because it focuses on my fighting skill and hunting. The game has a great color of which I'm impressed that they have a great texture and shadow to make the game more alive.
Tumblr media
The quality art is amazing especially the weapon and armor, it's just awesome depending on the element that we use. In addition, the legendary weapon and armor, with this the player will work hard to achieve the Legendary stuff and you will be able to flex to your friends. Above is the Legendary set on ice element. It took me 15 days in the game to complete the Legendary set.
This game is a lot of fun for online players especially for heavy gamers because you can go insane with your friends. This game can be bought on Steam for $19.99 USD and you can have the Deluxe Edition Bundle for $29.98 USD
For the rate of the game: 9/10

Being an RPG, Dragalia Lost would not be living up to its genre if it didn’t make the players scratch their heads when it comes to one aspect of the game and for some, it might just be the Epithets.
But don’t worry, by the time you’re done with this guide, you will no longer be pulling your hair out and instead, you’ll be embarking on the wondrous journey of claiming the titles you seek. Let’s begin!
What are Epithets?
In Dragalia Lost, Epithets are obtainable titles that players can acquire via various means. Once obtained, you can set your favourite one to define yourself, especially when playing co-op mode.
How do I change my Epithet?
From the home screen, press the More tab. A menu will then pop up and one of the options you’ll see, is Player Info.
Be sure to press on Player Info tab to bring up another menu and press on Profile. From there you should see a screen where nearer to the bottom of screen, you’ll see the word Epithet and a change tab next to it. Click on Change.
You should now see a screen where all the Epithets you have acquired, are presented. Press the one you wish to change to and touch Change when prompted to. If you have done as instructed, a prompt will pop up saying you have changed your Epithet. Congrats!
