Tom and Jerry & the Wizard of Oz (2011)
Tumblr media
While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...
I don't often give movies "So Bad It's Good" ratings. Even rarer are low “So Bad It’s Good” ratings. If a movie isn't good and isn't enjoyably awful, it probably isn't pleasant under any definition. I'm making an exception for Tom and Jerry & The Wizard of Oz. Why? Well, it all began with Tom and Jerry and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory; a film so bad you had to see it to believe it. No one in their right mind would rent or buy that cinematic mistake. All of its profits must have come from grandparents with poor eyesight desperate to find their grandkids a last-minute Christmas gift. After seeing it, no one would give any Tom and Jerry films - past or future - a chance but it's still available for purchase today. As long as Tom and Jerry and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is out there, the only audience for this… adaptation? Spoof? Follow-up? to the 1939 Judy Garland classic are demented cinephiles who purposely seek bad movies. Why aren’t they going to be pleased? Read on.
While reuniting Dorothy Gale (voiced by Grey Griffin) with her dog Toto, Tom and Jerry get sucked into a twister and transported to the magical land of Oz. Following Dorothy’s tracks on the yellow brick road, they meet munchkin Tuffy (voiced by Kath Soucie) who tells them of the great and powerful Oz (Joe Alaskey) - the only being who can help them return home.
Unlike Tom and Jerry and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, this isn’t a straight retelling of the original film with the two violence-prone cat and mouse clumsily jammed in. This is an “original movie” with an original plot. It's sort of a Lion King 1 ½ type of story. We see familiar events from a new angle. For instance, did you ever wonder how that bucket of water ended up in the Wicked Witch of the West’s castle? You'll know its back story after this film. What’s that? You never cared? You shouldn't, and that's why this movie fails. This side story is razor thin. In fact, the whole thing clocks in at a slim 56 minutes - far less than the film it’s spinning off of. Unfortunately, since you don’t care about anything, it feels much longer.
This is a perfect example of a film that would be better if it were worse. The new songs are bad, but they’re lame, not cringe-inducing and not memorable. The animation is cheap. I only counted one scene in which a character had a shadow. However, the budget isn’t so low that characters are constantly off-model or animated in a way that makes for great stills. Similarly, since the plot is new, there are no plot holes or nonsensical developments like we had in the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ripoff. This means there is less to make fun of and many more reasons to become bored.
This is a picture for a non-existent audience. No adult watching will go “I’d much rather watch this than the classic!” If you haven’t seen Dorothy Gale’s original adventure, you won’t understand this plot because it assumes you already know the story and blazes through important information. It isn’t good, and isn’t bad enough to be fun. There’s no reason to see this film and everyone who made it knew this perfectly well. I can’t think of any reason why anyone should ever see it but I also don’t hate it enough to care if you disagree. (On DVD, November 23, 2018)

"Casiano read aloud a doctor’s note that diagnosed her pregnancy as high risk, then began to sob and ultimately threw up, prompting the judge to call a recess."
"Casiano is part of a group of 13 women and two OB-GYNs who are suing the state of Texas. The lawsuit, filed in March by the Center for Reproductive Rights, asks the court to clarify the types of situations that constitute a medical emergency under Texas' abortion laws."
"The two-day hearing that began Wednesday pertains to a request from the plaintiffs that the judge issue a temporary injunction blocking Texas' abortion bans from applying to high-risk pregnancies. The state has asked that the lawsuit be dismissed."
"All three women who testified cried during their statements as they recalled the trauma of carrying nonviable pregnancies. Amanda Zurawski, the lead plaintiff, said she nearly died from sepsis — a life-threatening infection — after being denied an abortion when her water broke at 18 weeks."
"Brandt traveled out of state and received an abortion in Colorado to terminate the nonviable fetus. She gave birth to a healthy baby at 38 weeks. In her testimony, she said that if she had not gotten the abortion, she would likely have given birth to twins prematurely, only one of whom would have lived.
“I would have had to give birth to an identical version of my daughter without a skull and without a brain and hold her until she died,” Brandt said."
"Casiano, meanwhile, said she considered seeking an abortion in another state but was scared she might face penalties or lose her job. “I felt like I was imprisoned in my own body,” she said. She went into early labor in March, she said, and her baby — whom she named Halo — died four hours after birth."
"The women who testified each said they blamed Texas law, not their doctors, for their harrowing experiences."
If you are pro-life, you are pro-death. You are pro-torture. Do you want parents to watch their children die? You're a monster

Saw a ask on her awhile ago about giving silver longer ears and long eared hedgehogs and I'd like to say a few things.
Sonic and Amy have pointed ear while Shadow and Silver sometimes have rounded ears. (I like to think that means they are different types of hedgehogs and one pair might be long eared hedgehogs whose ears haven't grown in yet)
Long eared hedgehogs are a real thing. Alot of long eared hedgehogs have been well documented to be bi or gay. (It more common amongst females but males have been documented too)
Now is Sonic and Amy long eared or are Shadow and Silver long eared?
Omg the gay hedgehog gene is real!
Let's compare:

Long Eared Hodgegog up close
Tumblr media
Shit quality screenshot for some reason, but you can see here that lots of them have dark snouts, which is throwing me off.
But from this page I might suggest:
Sonic might be a Southern White-Breasted hedgehog (white tummy, lives in grass) or a Somali hedgehog (also pale tummy)
Silver might be a 4-toed hedgehog (silly front-spiking quills, white with darkening quills)
Amy might be an atelerix hedgehog (no spikes/ less spikes on the head)
Shadow might be a Brandts Hedgehog (dark, has a 'jumping attack'???)
Long eared hedgehogs crucially don't seem to ball up, which is not very Sonic of them, but if you want to make a hedgehog OC with curly ears and a propensity to be gay, I implore you to do so. Also this hedgehog made me cry:

This ones the lonely one???? Noooooo baby I'll be your friend!
Thanks for coming on a hedgehog journey with me! Interested to hear anyone's thoughts on this one!

Cartoon Network Friday Spotlight: Duck Dodgers- “Shiver Me Dodgers”
Tumblr media
Duck Dodgers is making its way to a Blu-Ray set soon, and that’s cause for celebrating. Warner’s recent complete Blu releases of their cartoons have been quality, and since Dodgers’ DVDs weren’t especially widely available (especially not the last season from what I recall), we should be grateful for what few bones Warner is still throwing for us cartoon fans. Especially since the show still remains so fun.
I believe this is the show’s first double-length episode, and it’s not one of its more elaborate tribute episodes. It’s a good one, though, and does rely on some pop culture. It kind of starts off as a Titanic parody, with a ship full of wealthy passengers about to enter sudden disarray. but what they think is a simple sinking is a hijacking, as Long John Silver the 23rd (and no, he isn’t copyrighted) collects most of their belongings, as well as a particular device that the Galactic Protectorate need. Dodgers and Cadet (Daffy and Porky) are tasked with breaking in to retrieve said device, but they also encounter X-2 (Marvin), who needs it for Mars’ own purposes. Despite their differences, the three decide to team up to steal from Silver.
But it won’t be that easy! It never is, but Silver challenges Dodgers to a slug eating contest, while Cadet later has to entertain the pirates with a sea shanty marathon so Dodgers and X-2 can try to steal the device. It’s a fun episode, maybe not as instantly iconic as, say, the Samurai Jack episode or the one that reunites the Warner Brothers (and Warner Sister)’s voices, but not every episode can be like those, or the show would get old. Luckily, the show has a strong sense of humor and a hell of a writer’s room- Spike Brandt, Tom Cervone, Paul Dini and Tom Minton, each an animation legend in their own right- who collaborate to give us what may be the best Looney Tunes show ever. Not counting the originals, of course.
I highly recommend picking up the Blu, even if you never saw the show. If you’re a fan of Looney Tunes and more recent cartoon humor, you’ll be plenty entertained.

Environment and Life of Barad Eithel
For an anon who requested this, I’m so sorry for the delay! I did Hithlum which I’m actually rewriting but I’d love to write more about the environment and life of Barad Eithel specifically!
I also did want to do some smaller locations and ecosystems as well as more larger regions that I constantly go back and add more to. These will include both smaller parts of the areas I’ve done and new ones (I’ll continue to do larger areas too and I’ll take requests for any!)
Flora, fauna and geography of Arda
Barad Eithel (”tower of the well”) is the fortress of Fingolfin and Fingon prior to the Nirnaeth. It is situated at the Eithel Sirion, the spring that is the source of the great river Sirion and was on the Eastern side of the Ered Wethrin, a vast mountain range that made up the boundary of Hithlum. Barad Eithel was actually just outside the boundary of Hithlum but was often considered part of it. West of Ethel Sirion and Barad Eithel there was a passage through the Ered Wethrin that lead to Mithrim.
The environment was cool and less humid than Dor-lómin during the summer months and with lots of snowfall in winter. Mist rises from the river as well as from Hithlum’s sea mists and thicker fog is also common.
It is also more heavily forested with both deciduous and coniferous trees. Examples include the silver fir, common holly, common yew, small leaved linden and several species of ash, larch, and pine.
Flora of the area is hardy and survives a thinner atmosphere. Purple milkvetch, short leaved sedge, tea leaved willow for examples although it is worth noting the proximity to Ard Galen, the lush and fertile green lands directly East.
Ribbon leaf water plantain, needle spike rush, shining pond weed, arrowhead, and least bulrush as well as others grow in the slower moving parts of the river and nearby streams and pools. Some of these are edible (if interest I’d love to do more on edible plants here or elsewhere throughout Arda)
There are lots of species that thrive in the Northernmost parts of the Sirion, both in the cold but clean and nutrient rich water itself and by the banks into the forest and mountains.
Pine martens, red and gray foxes, timber wolves, lynxes, Siberian weasel, bank vole, birch mouse, Brandt’s bat, reindeer, noctole, caucasian mole as well as the horses and other herd animals brought by Fingolfin.
In vales nearby the well, the horses graze on rye grasses, fescue, and meadow grasses.
A sample of the fish that might be found in this part of Sirion include the taimen, brown trout (of the purely freshwater ecotype), ide, bitterling, minnows, and species of freshwater catfish.
As I believe exist throughout Arda (and is supported by Tolkien’s description that ‘all creatures that ever walked the earth and many that did not’) there are species that no longer exist on earth today.  In the springs of the river Sirion occasionally the shadows of something like Glyphis hastalis, a freshwater shark can be found on its hunts. An ominous sight for any who spot it but they pose no danger to the elven inhabitants of Barad Eithel
Like with Himring, many species of birds are migratory, spending parts of the year near the great springs and part of the year West in the milder coastal climate of Nevrast or East in Ossiriand.
Birds of this realm might include the bar headed goose, snow goose, alpine swift, stellar’s eider, Siberian grouse, and taiga flycatcher as well as the other species listed in Hithlum (I do continuously go back to edit and add to my longer environment posts though)
I hope this is ok, anon! Please let me know if you have more questions or topics!

Tom and Jerry: Back to Oz (2016)
Tumblr media
While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. That's something to be applauded. With that established...
When I saw Tom and Jerry: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, I saw unintentional comedic gold. The shoehorned cat and mouse created plot holes, the crappy animation made for many meme-worthy frames, plus it was just so out-of-nowhere the very title made me laugh. What was next Tom and Jerry and Kramer vs. Kramer? Tom and Jerry and Me, Myself & Irene? I couldn't wait to see Tom and Jerry and the Wizard of Oz but it disappointed me. It’s a film made worse by being better, which is also very much the case for this sequel.
Following her return to Kansas after her adventure in the wonderful land of Oz, Dorothy Gale (voiced by Grey Griffin) learns the farm’s livestock is about to be forfeited to Mr. Bibb (Jason Alexander) unless the family repays their debt to him. Worse, the Nome King (also Jason Alexander) has attacked the Emerald City and threatens to sink it so he can reclaim its emeralds. Rejoined by her friends The Scarecrow (Michael Gough), The Cowardly Lion (Todd Stashwick), The Tinman (Rob Paulsen), her faithful dog Toto… and Tom and Jerry, Dorothy must stop this new threat to the kingdom and save the farm too.
Much like its predecessor, it’s hard to pinpoint who this film is for. “Wizard of Oz” fans may get a kick out of seeing some of the books’ less well-known elements, like the Jitterbug (James Monroe Iglehart, whose character was originally meant to appear in the 1939 classic but was ultimately cut) and the Nome King. I'd wager they'd rather watch Return to Oz, or read the books instead. It’d be different if the animation was good but it’s just ok. At its worst, it's bad without ever becoming so bad it’s hilarious. What a shame. The end credits show some pre-production stills and animatics in which the characters ARE consistently on-model and look nice. Clearly, this was a production made as cheaply and quickly as possible.
Assuming Tom and Jerry fans are interested in seeing the characters interact with L. Frank Baum’s creations, they'll find a  few decent gags here. They’re nothing special but these laughs prevent this creation from becoming painful. I guess you can also appreciate that as a sequel, this is “good” in the sense that, unlike so many other Oz sequels, we actually get to see the characters we liked the first time around come back. Well, not ALL of them. Thankfully, the irritating Tuffy (Kath Soucie) is kept to a minimum this time.
The songs are so bland and unmemorable I nearly forgot to mention them. The best bits of music is another rendition of Over the Rainbow which you’d trade in for a recording of Judy Garland’s any day of the week. That's all I've got to say about that.
Overall, Tom and Jerry: Back to Oz is betterrrr (?) than the first but not by much. It still struggles to validate its existence. This is the kind of movie you only end up watching because your grandma bought it for you at the gas station because she thought it was your birthday and forgot that you’re now a grown man. I didn’t hate it but would be hard-pressed to find anyone I'd recommend it to. (On DVD, February 8, 2019)
