Spar, Alpha-Ø2, Mand’alor the Resurrector.
My take on this super fascinating if somewhat obscure character from Legends! A clone with Jango Fett’s memories, who escaped Kamino to become leader of a faction of Mandalorians.
I’ve been exploring him a lot in my fic, the Prime Override, and I wanted to give him a shot visually. His appearance here is specific to my fic, where his story diverges considerably from Legends, so there are a couple of details that don’t match that of any of the three official illustrations that exist of him. But the changes are intentional! I still hope he’s recognizable 😅

when Obi-Wan arrives on Mandalore to investigate claims that the Mandalorians are working with the Separatists, Alpha-17 insists on joining him
they still have to root out Pre Vizsla's Death Watch after the terror attack on Sundari, but quickly realize that the incredibly homogeneous armor paint worn by the Death Watch commandos they met doesn't match the recordings they have of Mandalorians attacking Republic supply ships
so they have to look further, eventually picking up a lead toward the Prime's birth world, Concord Dawn
where Alpha-17 is able to learn that the Protectors have been recently taken over with a man with a very familiar face: Spar, Alpha-02, the brother he thought he'd lost before the war even started....
and now Alpha-17 has to decide whether his loyalty to his brother outweighs his duty to the Republic, and to his Jedi partner...

Spar, from chapter 30 of Restless. In this scene, he is what I'd call “un gros lourd” in French, but I've read someone who gave an English equivalent as “an annoying pest”, and I think it fits ah ah. I love this chapter.
I know it will sound like a poor excuse, but I bought myself a very good book on anatomy a few months ago, and I though this scene in the fic would be perfect to practice. I was a little worried about the angle at which I could draw this without giving the impression that it's meant to be explicit. Eventually I found a reference photo which I think looked good and started from here.
I probably made several anatomical mistakes, but I did my best. 🥲

In keeping with my firm belief that 99 is one of the Alphas, here’s some headcanons about his relationships with various Legends characters.
Alpha-17: Alpha loves his little brother and will happily pound your face in if you insult him. Fordo: He always brings 99 gifts and communicates with him while he’s on a mission. He’s not really a talkative person and 99 is well aware of it.
Spar: 99 picked up on what was going on with Spar before anyone else and got concerned. While no one’s ever come out and said it, the rest of the Alphas have their suspicions about how easily Spar snuck off of Kamino.
Mij Gilamar: 99 and Gilamar have a fairly good relationship, mainly because Gilamar is one of the few medics 99 trusts to work on him without doing any weird experiments. Walon Vau: 99 has very mixed feelings about Vau. On one hand, he hates how Vau treats his trainees and knows that they’re all going to end up traumatized and unstable. On the other, he does understand where Vau is coming from, at least on paper. He wants his brothers to survive and he gets that commandos need more intense training than average clone troopers. He just knows that Vau’s cadets are going to end up with PTSD long before they ever see a battlefield. Things are complicated by the fact that Mird, for reasons best known only to itself, has taken a liking to him, meaning that it has to come over for playdates. Between Mird and the fact that Vau is legitimately trying to toughen his cadets up so they’ll survive, 99 likes him more than certain other trainers.
Dred Priest: If 99 had the chance, he’d kill Priest without any remorse. (And Isabet Reau as well, but she and Priest are basically the same asshole.) As he can’t do that, he’ll settle for using his access to the utility control rooms to make their lives as difficult as possible.
Kal Skirata: 99 is aware that Skirata genuinely wants the Nulls to be happy and that he’s the main reason the Nulls weren’t decommissioned. 99 respects him for that (possibly connected to a certain fanfic idea that has consumed my mind), but something about the man just rubs him the wrong way. Skirata has never done anything to him, it’s just one of cases where you just dislike someone and can’t quite explain why.
The Nulls: Despite the Nulls and the Alphas having a tense relationship, 99’s never had any problems with them, outside of them knocking out the power to the science building and making his job harder. He knows that they could be a lot worse and they don’t intentionally cause him trouble. (See the parentheses for Kal Skirata.)

Old but good; analyzing Saitama vs Genos
Wonder if the Saitama and Genos spar is the first time someone actually takes Saitama seriously, as a person with serious ability and as a person who can be legitimately threathening and a respectable fighter.
Tumblr media
With Genos going all out and not underestimating or belittling Saitama's ability and instead calling him out on not fighting seriously enough because he was just avoding hits and not striking back, really won Genos quite a few points in Saitama's book. That Genos noticed it in the first place that Saitama was holding back and noticed it very fast to boot, spoke of keen intellectualism and analytical skills.
When he was stupendously shocked instead of idk, fainting after a Death punch, Genos showed he had actual guts to face death head on too and wasn't just all talk and no show and that's why Saitama chose to invite him out on dinner later. Genos was trying to impress Saitama, so Saitama tested him and chose to reveal his full ability in return and was happy with what he found since Genos didn't run away screaming.
He slaps genos forehead with a knowing smile and eye-brow raise to get him out of his shock; it's not every day a guy has to face death head on and lives to tell the tale.
It is something Saitama has faced himself multiple times when he was training to become stronger, so he would know the feeling quite well.
Tumblr media
Having the composure to still be standing in the face of Saitama's Serious punch means Genos can practically face anything the world throws at him without flinching and still rise to the challenge and that's all the confirmation Saitama needs if he's to actually take Genos as disciple. Someone hanging around him would come face to face with world ending threats of far higher caliber than is the norm, of that he has no doubt. Just for the sake of their own protection, they'd have to rise to Saitama's level if they want to hang around with him because Saitama is a monster magnet.
And maybe after a Death punch, anything else is practically too tame to even induce a shock, so Genos would be better prepared to face destructive force like that and not freeze and be able to dodge.
The invitation for spontaneous late dinner seems to be just as much of an silent apology as it is an invitation that Saitama wanted to get to know Genos better. The guy impressed him enough to be quite interesting. Genos being legitimately interested in HIM and not deterred despite showing just how dangerous he could be, made him interesting.
(Saitama was going to pay for both since he invited Genos, he planned out the restaurant based on his low funds and based on that it had good Udon and the evening time gave it a more "romantic" overtone, so yea, it was "technically" a date too.)
Tumblr media
I also highly doubt that Saitama looking back at Genos was just because of he was unsure if Genos liked udon, but more about second-guessing himself if he had actually went too far after all, because Genos still wasn't reacting and wondering if he had actually scared him too much or something. Saitama doesn't Death punch people for fun, so there could've always been an adverse reaction.
Saitama was also seemingly second-guessing himself in spontaneously asking Genos out for dinner in the first place. What if he was making some kind of social plunder here because Genos was just staring at him with a weird expression?
Fortunately, it wasn't a plunder for Saitama.
--
Unfortunately, Saitama probably also feels like he's just a wallflower compared to Genos and all the people vying for Genos' attention afterwards; Amai-mask the Handsome Kamen and all the fangirls, one who blatantly just asked Genos to shake her hand is a source of envy because he wasn't confident enough to do anything remotely the same. Genos is a show-stopper and Saitama definitely noticed this and so he doesn't want his new disciple to even work with him to steal the glory. Saitama's low self-worth does not do him any favours.
Instead of getting rookie-crushers trying to crush his hopes of succeeding, Genos even gets treated differently. People didn't seek out to test his ability as S-ranker, but seemingly sought him out for entirely different reasons, not interested in fighting skills...and the only connecting dot Saitama seems to figure out that Genos just looks far more handsome and he's popular because of his looks, so Genos already forges better connections immediately. Fangirls don't want to fight, far from it, they just want to know him.
The lower the rank, the less popular and uglier the hero is. The higher the rank, the more popular, better connected and good looking the hero seems to be.
Not unlike in multiple irl job circles where people who have the looks get more foot inside the door and the higher status you are, one often just looks the role.
It just perpetuates the poor self-image he has of himself when other C-rank heroes claim they are popular too (Tank toppers), so Saitama is just an exception to the rule of being unpopular C-ranker, so it must be something about himself that is wrong. That he's the only common denominator in being unpopular and it HAS to relate to how lame and plain he looks. Because he doesn't look like a buff Tank topper either, that must be one of the reasons he's not popular.
Tumblr media
(Saitama's self-image is really quite awful innit? I'd need to do some serious research to see if it has gotten even a smidge better)
Genos is S-rank, he's C-rank. Genos looks pretty, he does not. Genos is amazing, he is lame. Genos is popular, he is unknown and disliked. Genos has nice hair, he does not and worse, he used to have hair but lost it and all that remains is a shiny bald head. There is a lot for Saitama to be envious about when he just tries to be himself, but nobody likes him when he tries to be just himself. Too plain to ever be noticed. Upward comparing himself to Genos doesn't do his self-esteem any favours and he plainly shoots down any kind of flattery.
It is no wonder if Saitama feels like he just can't compare to Genos and has taken this long to actually show any kind of affection and confidence to express his true feelings; his poor self-esteem just made him feel like he never had a chance anyway from the start and Genos is definitely out of his league, being everything he hoped he could be. And probably not actually really interested in him in that way despite titivating himself to Saitama, that was just an ulterior motive just like his empty flattery before meteor incident, plain to see through.
After is a different story, because Saitama did something heroic, so there was an actual reason behind it and Saitama can appreciate Genos being more honest and cheering him up and listening to him rant.
It does send up quite the mixed signals however, so it takes a long time to figure out his intentions just to be on the safe side.
Can't say for sure if Saitama has stopped comparing himself to Genos completely, but his looks and lack of popularity are no doubt still a sore spot, even if he has since learned to greatly appreciate Genos and how he complements him instead of highlighting the differences.

The Prime Override - Chapter 63 is up!
Jango - Tell Cody
Cutting it a bit close, but here it is, last chapter of 2023!!
AND it's also the last chapter of Part 1 of this big-ass story! This chapter wraps up the Early War arc!!
(I made it, y'all, I made it, sobs)
Cody watches the Supreme Chancellor, and forces himself to blink regularly. He and his vod’e are as still as statues. The Supreme Chancellor, Cody thinks, is perusing them like the people he saw at a market during one of his squad missions. Like the potential buyers going up and down the lines of livestock, selecting the plumpest one to slaughter— And like those people, Cody notes that his Excellency actually seems to be paying somewhat close attention to them—his eyes don’t pass over them vacantly, like those of some politicians. No, he’s looking for something, some factor that causes him to skim over some, linger on others—

💙 for SparMij bc brainrot — MBW
hello friend!!!!
💙 drunken kiss / tipsy
---
Sometimes Spar regrets his lack of interest in ever becoming Mand’alor. He takes a sip, the bottle half-empty, the glass slick and wet with condensation, and watches Gilamar through his reflection on the window across the room. He’s sitting at a table to Spar’s left, talking as quietly as the rowdy tavern will allow him with a few men Spar knows only by sight.
He’s not ignoring Spar—not exactly. But he’s trying his very best to keep his distance, and Mij Gilmar’s best is pretty good. Spar has spent the last few hours doing the rounds—playing cards, playing darts, talking to men and women Jango once knew, who stare at Spar like they can see Jango looking through his eyes.
They would follow. If Spar decided to run for the title, they would follow him. Shysa’s still in the sector: a short comm call and Spar would have him back on Enceri, full of plans and ambition.
Now and then he wonders—Gilamar would never forgive him. He’s loyal, if not to Spar to Jango’s memory.
Gilamar knows he’s being observed. Spar allows himself to be caught, smiling at his old teacher in the reflection of the window. Gilamar blinks and looks away, lips pressed tight.
Spar finishes his drink and makes his way through the crowded bar, bucket—buy’ce—under his arm.
It’s still snowing. Spar breathes in deep, allowing the cold to seep into his bones. He’s pleasantly buzzed, his face hot, his hair still damp with sweat. The street is quiet, the noises of the tavern muffled by its thick walls, by the closed doors. Spar sighs and looks up at the night sky, the clouds heavy and close to the ground. It’s so quiet he can almost hear the snow falling: he closes his eyes and feels a snowflake land on his eyelid, on his cheek, on his lower lip.
A blast of noise. Spar opens his eyes, shaking himself.
“Spar?”
Spar lets go of his blaster. He turns around, his boots making a mess of the thick layer of snow.
Gilamar’s flushed and sweaty. He’s so pale it shows even in the dark, his light eyes too bright and reflecting the light coming through the tavern’s windows and the streetlamps.
“Trainer Gilamar,” Spar replies. A muscle in Gilamar’s jaw twitches, his shoulders stiff. “Tired of acting like I’m not here, then.”
It’s not that Gilamar doesn’t care: again, he may not be a good man, but he is loyal. Back on Kamino he tried his best for Jango, and his best has always been very good. Now he sighs, his shoulders dropping. He looks away from Spar, down at his feet.
He’s just a man. Red hair and freckles, eyes so light they look like glass. Grey on his temples and on his stubble, laughter lines and broken nose. He’s just a man, nothing more and nothing less, perfectly fallible, and Spar resents him and misses him in equal measure.
Later, Gilamar will blame the alcohol. Spar approaches him, hooks a finger in his belt and goes on his tiptoes to kiss him, drinks his surprised gasp right off his mouth. He tastes like netra’gal, and his hand is hot and damp with sweat when he cradles Spar’s jaw, fingers shaking.
Later, he will blame the alcohol: but now he kisses Spar right back.

During drill exercises
Spar: “Damn I’m thirsty, can I get a drink from your canteen 17?”
Alpha-17: “Go for it.”
Fordo: “Trust me Spar, you don’t want to do that.”
Spar: “I’m not scared of a little back wash vod, we’re literally all the same person.”
Spar: *spits it out as soon as he takes a fat swig.*
Spar: “God damn it, it’s vodka!”
Alpha-17: “131 proof strait up. I’ve been waisted since the day we graduated.”
