Obscurum Per Obscurius
A Mara Sov/Sjur Eido fic for Season of the Wish
The Queen of the Awoken was a woman whose edges bled black against the darkness, exalted by the light. What secrets she betrayed hid only further truths to never be known. Each word was precisely chosen yet incomprehensible to most. It was not lying, she had once said, but deceiving, and those were things distinct. To lie was to obscure the truth, speaking in falsehoods and impossibilities, but to deceive was to declare the truth plainly and allow others to lie to themselves. By the very nature of her being, she was an anomaly. By choice, she was unknowable. Sjur did not very much care to give her a choice.
Read on A03
Subterfuge was the game of queens. No corsair or courtier could play it better.
“Fleet footed you are not, Sjur Eido.”
A folly, to have assumed even her Wrath might have a chance however transitory against the queen of queens.
Fingers closing against her palm, the tips of her nails dragging along the velvet of half-gloves, the Wrath turned. In the brief second she did, she felt the silver of the mask in her other hand, begging in argent tones to be laid upon her face once more. The weight of it pressed phantomlike to her cheekbones though she never lifted it from where it hung, limp between her fingers.
Her place dictated she wear it before her queen. For honour, tradition, respect, she should have bowed her head in deference and fit the mask to her face before baring it to her superior.
It remained in her hand as the Awoken Queen came quietly into the night.
The stars paled for her thoughtless grace and the moon in its waxing confidence did dim. Wind followed lightly, calmed to a breeze. Those sly planets above who through the darkness stole glances did demure. All things which in the night slithered did bow, and all which made flight above did dip to touch their wings to the water. The night stood silent and still. The very heavens in her presence did know their place.
Only Sjur Eido stood defiant.
Such defiance was tested when her queen came under the arbour, arm lifted to brush aside trailing, luminescent vines. The hand fell from where it parted the plants in a single elegant motion. That those, too, did not move at merely her presence seemed unreasonable, yet to see that even she was beholden to nature's whims was a rare reminder her queen was but a woman as she.
Heretical, and as quickly as the thought had come to her, it was banished with silent apology from her mind.
With that thought went the very notion, and Mara Sov stood before her, divine once more.
Beneath the mask of golden wings and crystal finery, the queen’s eyes burnt with unmistakable fury. Not for the disobedience of her bare-faced Wrath, but for all that had transpired but breathless moments before.
“You can not dissuade my hand. Only evade it by temporary measure.”
Sjur dared not close her eye against her, finding her voice came easier than her words as she replied, “I have done a poor job evading it.”
“You have.” A certainty, spoken with an unyielding truth. It brought shame high and violet to Sjur’s cheeks. It did not stop her queen from adding, sharply, “To be expected, when one does not know from what they run.”
“From your fury, my Queen.”
“And what, Sjur, could inspire in me such anger?”
Rhetorical, perhaps, and yet never was the queen one for redundancy. If it were a question with no answer, she would not have wasted her breath to speak it. Stepping forward, blossoming bough catching the fur of her cloak, Sjur answered with what conviction was left in her, “She did not know better.”
“You know better.” What anguish was belied in words was silenced by tone.
The Queen of the Awoken was by choice an entity beyond knowing. A woman whose edges bled black against the darkness, exalted by the light.
“Are you jealous?”
The unspoken demanded from her queen more. It demanded she admit to feelings reserved for those beings of lesser importance and with little to lose.
“Jealous,” the queen sneered, but, were one to know her tones and moods as Sjur did, it was clear that it was no rejection of the thought. Disgust, for her own emotions, and an admission of them the same.
Jealous, and of a girl scarcely belonging in her court. The Awoken Queen, jealous over a brushed hand and whispered word. Marble moved to emotion by the simple act of speech, gilded cracks showing in the twitching of her lip and slow exhale. Jealous in a way that only one who knew her as well any could would see.
Jealous, furiously jealous, over a girl asking one of a dozen paladins to dance, and what that revealed beneath the cover of the arbour was more than most would know of Mara Sov in a thousand years in her court.
The queen’s eyes narrowed, before she whispered, “You know better.”
Silver rang sharp against crystal, mask falling from Sjur’s fingers. The queen’s hand beneath her chin kept her still. A foot between her own held her stance. The lips which parted her own, gilded and prying, spoke more truth in silent begging against her than they could in any sharply practiced words. Sjur’s mouth remained shut, eye open, pliable to her queen’s desires, yet refusing such easy compliance.
If her queen would demand from her fidelity and loyalty unwavering, she would see her own demand met in return.
The smooth brush of velvet against the queen’s high cheek was but temptation, soothing Mara into the familiar rhythm of their love. Slow, indelicate, their own, and Sjur indulged in it with the wicked greed she could feel in her queen as teeth came to teeth.
Having her alone was not enough. To know it kept her from a ravenous court who longed to worship her could not satisfy her selfish desire.
Fingers brushed along the perfectly carved edges of golden feathers, methodical in their tracing, finding every facet of the crystal pressed to the corner of the masked eye, until they caught. Caught, just behind the curve of a wing. Purposeful, and with a pull and a release of air that pressed between gold and fair lilac skin, she made it apparent to her queen, who did pull back in silent wonder.
The gold mask fell heavy to the crystal floor.
The hand under her chin gripped tighter, Sjur kept nose to nose with her. In that voice low as twilight, Mara whispered, “Remember who you belong to.”
It was not a command of rage, to be exposed beneath the envious gaze of the stars.
An invitation to look at her - no, to revel in her and lose all good sense but that which kept her standing. One extended to none but her in that moment, and for that moment alone Sjur would give in to her. A thousand moments more she would do the same, but as she had every moment prior, she would tell herself that in no moment before had she been so overcome by her queen as that moment she was.
Every moment hence would be the same, but she did believe that moment singular in its profundity, as to all the world but her was Mara Sov obscured, and to her alone did she beg to be seen.

Pulling up a chair and cracking a cold (soda)
So, what’s Land of Lords? I scoped your blog a lil bit but couldn’t find much of anything ^^; (blasted search system)
that's because i never talk about my stuff on tumblr and i especially never tag anything ever!
so, since you didn't pick a direction and i recently wrote most of their shit(that i've figured out) down in the lore doc, let's talk about the wild west, home of beasts, blood, and the bleeding moon, the Midnight Dun.
The Dun is mostly forests and patches of plains, with plains more common towards the north near the western edge of the Arms of Sov mountain range, and small islands and plentiful rivers and wetlands towards the south, where the boundary is marked by the rising of starlight and the edge of the Triplicate Muse's fog.
The Western Lord, Mother-Queen of the Krythin, doesn't actually have a single name, because i've yet to think of something i like. Anyways, so it is the most directly powerful singular deity throughout most of the setting, as that is how she came to bear their Crown, and raise her bleeding moon into the sky, forcing time to stand still under the crimson light, and ensuring that the magicks of blood and flesh would find their home.
The Krythin, born from their Mother's divine blood, are physically strong, and adept at shifting their viscous bodies to suit their needs, becoming crimson beasts that tower over the trees or nearly akin to man on a whim. Which, in simple terms, means that they are shapeshifters made of blood. They are always recognizable though, for they are never small, they never lack the traits of beasts, and their fur is always the colour of blood(though it's typically a dark red, unless they leave the Dun for Northern Sov or the Eastern Nok and experience the warmth of daylight, at which point it does become a vibrant red)
And I would be remiss if I didn't mention how their gods come to be, although it is simple. Their gods are most typically beasts with traits that set them apart from the rest of their species, born with great strength, cunning, control of magic, or other such wondrous trait. The rest are blessed with blood from the Bleeding Moon, and granted immortality.
Their gods can, roughly, be set into two categories: great beasts, which are usually hunted for glory and divinity by the ambitious and brave, and great leaders, whom are the heads of Krythin packs, granted worship and belief for how good they are at hunting or leading the pack.
A few noteworthy divinities are Blazing Lamplight, a little flaming song bird with at least a few dozen bodies, whom serves as a god of travel and navigation, the guiding light through the dark forests for many packs. This one is not hunted, despite being a great beast, because it is made of fire and also favoured by the Mother-Queen. Another great beast was the Drinker of Blood, a beast with a bronze face, who had a pension for eating the carnomancy wielded by those that attempted to hunt it, and devouring the blood and memory(deeply sacred and treasured things in Krythin society, due to being gifted blood by the head god and some of their magic, called blood-memory, being a deeply religious thing they do). This one was hunted, and killed by The Starless Blood, a great leader, whom is not a Krythin.
Roshina(the starless blood) is actually a God-Spirit driven from its home in Sov, as it was antithetical the Kinoc's Brilliant Lord of Day. It was a friend to the Mother-Queen, and was granted sanctuary. In return, it slew the Drinker of Blood, as it threatened to devour her whole pack, and fashioned itself a mask from the beast's face, so that it could finally speak and feed. Since I mentioned two beasts, I feel like I should have another great leader mentioned here. Tender Renoth is from the end, and is a Krythin. They are the leader of the Gravetenders, whom guard their slumbering Mother, while she hibernates for as long as her moon hangs high in the night.

This meta post will be discussing my take on magick in the Fire Emblem universe ( mostly centered around SoV ). This headcanon is exclusive to how Delthea sees it as she is inherently unwillingly a talented prodigy who does not essentially believe in the mere act of believing and has to see some form of explanation or rationale for her to accept it. Which is why sometimes Delthea tends to be confused when handed a tome during combat and ignorant when taught how to cast magic; going as far as to think she’s being belittled. Due to her never having to directly use a tome to support her casting, she understands tomes are for grasping the concept of certain spells but Delthea, herself, has never used a tome to learn anything thus far and is more of a visual learner when it comes to magick.
Note: I make a very specific distinction between “Magic” and “Magick” as most attribute the former to stage magic and sleight-of-hand whereas the latter denotes sorcery, witchcraft, and everything that is seen by mages in Fire Emblem. Another word to describe “magick” is “thaumaturgy” which is a more accurate description, but for simplicity’s sake, I’ll mostly be denoting to magick for this post. I will also be ignoring a lot of the gameplay mechanics from Fates/Engage because it fundamentally breaks a lot of conventions due to its lack of tome/weapon durability and lack of “HP Drain” mechanic which is an important aspect of this meta.
Magick and Its Costs
In Fire Emblem, magick is wielded in a number of methods depending on the game. Most situations, magick is harnessed via tomes that eventually break after a certain number of uses. For FE Echoes, magick is available by offering one’s stamina/energy/life force in exchange for power to realize the application of spells in real life. This can also apply to weapon combat arts, Where it is the physical exhaustion they incur on the user in Echoes, thus draining HP. While in Three Houses, a result of the academy teaching students to let the weapon take the brunt of the force so that it suffers damage instead of the wielder.
In many cases, casting spells will create lasting damages to one’s body, a testament to why many mages wear gloves in order to conceal the direct damage their bodies—namely their hands—endure when offering a piece of themselves into their attack; these injuries are usually relative to whatever spell one uses, but that is not always the case ( Fire leaves horrific burns when used improperly, Aura forces one to collapse as if pressured by an overbearing weight that threatens to crush their body ). Exceptions to this are Celica, Delthea, and Luthier who likely have built-in resistances due to their long lineage of ancestors attuned to magick, and having lived in a magick-oriented community for their entire lives or in Celica’s case, divine blessing of some degree, this doesn’t exactly mean their immune to injury it’s just less likely to have their magicks get out of control compared to non-lineage mages.
Magick in SoV essentially follows the law of conservation of mass, where any system of of transferring energy to mass, and vice versa, must remain consistent over time; for example, an ice cube has a set mass and when it melts into water, that mass—now volume—remains relatively consistent over time ( e.g. think of like FMA’s rule for alchemy ). For magick in SoV, one uses their life force and converts it to a spell equal to how much life they give up, which is why spells like Fire take practically nothing whereas spells like Aura, Sagittae, and Ragnarok, while powerful, require more of one’s life force in order to properly initiate the spell. As for the reason why this the case, it is likely because the more “abstract and complicated a spell is, the more energy it requires for the spell to not only take shape, but to also have actual potency. With tomes, mages are free from giving up their life in order to cast spells because the tome serves as the medium through which energy is converted and expelled as a spell. This is why tomes have durability and why more powerful spells have a limited number of uses compared to their weaker counterparts ( e.g. Thoron vs. Thunder ).
Rituals are also not exempt from this system; if anything, they’re the class of spells that require the most in terms of sacrifice. This can be seen with Tatarrah kidnapping Delthea and brainwashed her into a Witch. On a larger scale, this also can be seen when Berkut offering Rinea to Duma in a last-ditch effort to attain the power to defeat Alm by letting Duma transform his beloved into a Witch. Sacrifice is a large aspect of Magick, and in SoV it’s a question of how much are you willing to give up in your pursuit for strength? Such is the recurring theme in many Faustian tales, and while the devil may not always be present, the temptation remains.
Magick as an Inherited Trait
A thing to also know about mages is that not everyone is born with the potential to be a mage ( of course ignoring Fates’s marriage/friend seals and Three Houses’ class/seminar system ) nor is everyone born with the ability to be an excellent mage. This disparity is especially visible in SoV where some characters are downright horrible at being mages whereas others absolutely excel. Characters like Gray and Tobin would perform horribly as mages due to their limited repertoire of spells while Kliff and Celica are naturally better and have a larger library of spells to work with ( Kliff especially so because he learns the most spells out of all the male mages ). Much of this relates to one’s bloodline as legacy and social stratification are fundamental topics SoV attempts to tackle in its narrative—where the bonds of fate seem so inexplicably intertwined and those chosen by it daring to break those foundations all at once.
Luthier and Delthea mention that their affinity for magicks is due to one of their ancestors being an exceptionally powerful sorceress, that affinity having carried on down her bloodline and resonating best in females. This is not to suggest that such an affinity is gender-locked. It’s likely that magick affinity is a mutation in humans in Fire Emblem and when it occurs, it becomes a dominant trait that becomes linked to one’s DNA and only unlocks depending on whether someone matches similar traits with the progenitor of the magick affinity trait.
Learning Magick
However, one can only do so much with simply being born with the talent; magick is something that needs to be cultivated in order to truly become a force to be reckoned with. Going back to the law of conservation of mass, one must have enough vitality in order to power their spells, meaning that physical training and maintaining one’s health is paramount; it’s likely that endurance exercises are at the core of a mage’s training in Valentia as opposed to muscular training ( such exercises might include: running, daily stretches, yoga, etc. ). Training the physical body allows one to have the resources required to cast a spell, but in order to conjure anything one must understand the science and intricacies behind the spell.
Spells are can be learned through tomes, although sometimes an individual might be able to cast spells from the get-go ( albeit in an unstable form, depending on one’s ability and talent ). While certain spells can be hailed down as a divine revelation, due to having no real physical tome of said spells like, Ragnarok & Ragnarok Ω.  But beyond learning, one must understand what it is that they are casting and envision with absolute clarity its existence and function lest it backfire on the user or their allies. For simplicity’s sake, we will take a look at Fire.
Fire—as in the concept—is generally understood as a force of warmth: a phenomenon that heats everything around or in it and has the ability to destroy or heal certain injuries. Fire burns brightly and serves as the cornerstone on which mankind is able to survive and evolve, for without fire one cannot cook their meats or warm families during hostile winters. Fire stokes the furnaces with which mankind is able to create weapons, it finds home in the sun and the stars which illuminate the path when darkness nears. In understanding fire and how it behaves on an intimate level, a mage is able to convert their vitality into heat and light and create a ball of fire.
The more tangible and concrete a spell is, the easier it is for a mage to cast it without risking their health. This truth applies just as well to spells which take on more abstract or complex forms such as Sagittae and Aura; while powerful, these spells require a certain level of imagination in order to come to life. While light exists and is what enables one to see, to create that which is intangible tangible is something else entirely. For spells like these, part of one’s vitality goes into actually making the spell corporeal and the rest go into the spell’s potency and allowing it to take flight in the direction of one’s enemy.
Tome Magick vs. Unassisted Magick
Tome users have it easy compared to those who perform magick without a medium as they can simply use the energy imbued within a tome in order to cast a spell. Of course, learning magick from tomes is still a difficult task, but the method of execution is generally much safer ( albeit less potent ) compared to unassisted magick which is why most cultures favor tome magick; it’s uniquely in Valentia where the law of conservation of mass seems to be upheld like a religion ( e.g. offerings to rejuvenate one’s health or sacrifice your very being in exchange for power ).
Tomes are created through careful crafting in order to prevent the magick inside from becoming unstable and it’s a craft that is heavy in demand due to their limited nature. The making of the book itself is not so important as the ink that is used to inscribe text and sigils adorning every page. The ink is made with specific types of ores ( crystals ) or other substances believed to be capable of storing magicks—the rarer the material, the better it will be at holding large quantities of magick ( and more expensive )—and depending on what is written denotes the properties of the spell contained in that specific tome. As stated prior, tomes can only do so much before the ink loses all of its magick and the book becomes inert, but this method alleviates any risk of the user losing their life when attempting to fight for said life.  Sometimes, special weapons maybe preferred to use weapons as catalyst in order to help reduce the burden of magic  ( as seen in classes such as the Priestess/Enchantress/Harrier. These classes would specialize in both forms of combat but exchanging tomes for rings and sword mediums )
Unassisted magick is the reverse with being inherently more powerful at the cost of one’s vitality; that being said, another difference between the two is that tome users are not able to alter the properties to the same extent as unassisted magick users. In other words, tome users have less freedom and control of their spells compared to unassisted magick users as the spells they cast are limited by what’s available in the tome of their choosing. Hence why Celica is able to freely cast fire magic in order to light the way as she wanders through dungeons. While Valentian mages do, in fact, use tomes, they are only ever used for training or spells that are not meant for battle as they are also just as unreliable in combat due to it’s lackluster power and often rely on the power of special magick rings to alleviate or mediate any harsh backlash that casting may set.
Healing Magick
Healing magick ( white magick ) functions similarly to their destructive counterparts with the only difference being that staves are used as a medium for casting magicks to their intended target. It can only be assumed that healing magick functions much like a wave and thus dissipates when it is cast without a medium, so by having something like a staff, one can simply point to their intended target and heal them without worrying about the effects trickling elsewhere. This can also explain how Saints are able to heal units all around them through Renewal and how the spell fortify heals a large area in a wavelike fashion.
Other Forms of Magick
As seen in SoV and other games, magicks unrelated to combat exist such as illusions, divination, scrying, and projection. These magicks aren’t explained or seen as often so it’s hard to really provide an explanation, but in most cases these spells are cast far from battle and often demonstrated in the form of a ritual. For entities like Jedah who have offered themselves to Duma for power, such magicks can be used without a ritual and likely cost them little ( as they have already offered their entire selves to Duma ) whereas other mages likely offer certain items with magical properties as an offering rather than using their life force to conduct these otherwise arduous rituals.

MC: But you told me we would talk! You told me you would tell me the plot!
Lumera: lol
Sorry, Alfred, but it's gonna be months before I can think of you as anything other than Even Gayer Dmitri.
I like how this Somniel stuff is effectively all the exact same circumstances as Fates--you can do it Because Dragons, no further explanation than It's A Dragon Thing. Fates strongly implied Because Dragons, but there was no story cutscene where a normie stood there and went "you divine dragons have access to a secret dimension!" (instead it was Lilith saying "this is a space the divine dragons can access," which strongly implied all the same circumstances as Somniel but did not quite spell it out).
What I am saying is FATES REMAKE. FATES REMAKE, PLEASE, NOW.
Oh, cute, MC gets a dorky little jumper to wear in their bedroom. Though, if I'd slept for a thousand years I'd be pretty anxious about that bed...
The way that they have civilian clothes outside of armor is a nice touch. I hope future FEs/remakes do that.
>VANDER BUTLEr OUTFIT
He's not cute in text yet, though...
Somniel reminds me strongly of Suikoden 3's Budehuc, somehow.
I fully understand why limited supports appeal to people, but honestly I've never liked them because...I would rather not have to memorize support lists. I would rather go "male, female, fuck yeah you get at least a basic bonus for being adjacent." When I played Sacred Stones I had to CONSTANTLY go back and reference the wiki for potential supports and it was so fucking tedious. Hated it and it threw me out of the game. Similar situation with SoV, though its supports were more limited.
The 'Queendom' thing is localization flavor, I believe. I mean, does it make a lot of sense if Firene is also currently ruled by a queen, but still called kingdom?

Please tell me about your male Fire Emblem blorbos!!
The ones that I was referring to in the tags pf that post were Sylvain (3H), Inigo/Laslow (A/F), Saber (SOV), and Pandreo (Engage). The first 3 are a little… weird about women, Saber much less so than the others though (Jessie is the weirdo in that game).
I really really like what they did with Sylvain though. He has, like, the best character development I’ve ever seen in a FE game. He is really self aware for the most part, but there are a few moments when others have to help him a bit (mostly the player & Mercedes) but he does get it. He acknowledges his issues and does deal with them eventually. And I actually really like that, in 3 Hopes, he actually does this on his own during the timeskip. He gets his shit together all on his own and is much more responsible when he comes back. There’s actually a lot of ways in which he’s relatable too, like when he tells Annette “I’d rather people think I’m stupid” when she finds out that he’s actually a genius. I’ve heard enough “you’re too smart for this” to last a lifetime so I understand why he feels like it’s easier. Being measured by what people expect you to be able to do instead of what you’re actually capable of is frustrating. He has a lot of overlap with Hilda & Dorothea too, and I love both of them. He shares insecurities and struggles with them and it makes me wish he had more interaction with Hilda.
The issue w/ Pandreo is really just that he’s a priest. I mean I know the religion in Engage is not the same as in real life (the Divine Dragon being someone that worshippers can actually see and speak to is a major difference), but, like, he’s a priest!
There’s more I like that aren’t so conflicting, though. Lukas (SOV), Hugh (BB), Fogado (Engage), Ashe (3H), Atlas (SOV). I wish they had more characterization though. 3 Houses truly was exceptional in that regard. They utilized the support conversations really well and fleshed out the characters better than they did in any other game. I could write a whole essay on Sylvain, Mercedes, Hilda, Dorothea, Ingrid, Hubert, Petra, Dedue, etc. The other games aren’t bad but they’re nowhere near as elaborate

I remember you mentioned in a post somewhere (no idea which one) that Grima's eyes must be magic because his skull layout would be weird if otherwise and it got me thinking so I raise you my headcanon:
Magic works through a "vessel" system, like Grima. the stronger the vessel (the strongest being biological like humans) the more likely it'll serve as a good conductor for a longer amount of time without breaking. This is super dangerous for the average human mage because "breaking" straight up means death. Tomes are specially made to serve as these conductors, but must be specially made for different types of magic and aren't as powerful.
Manaketes can use themselves as "vessels" contrary to humans to transform into their dragon forms, and the strongest ones can channel magic through themselves. Due to Grimas weird ass "birth" he has no set limit on how much magic he can channel through himself, so he's effectively a magic jar with no bottom. This can also explain why he doesn't actually turn into a dragon but summons one. His "mortal" body IS the dragon stone, so he uses this to do all sorts of weird fuckery to himself that other divine dragons cant do.
Interesting! I'm always a fan of theories that involve magic being dangerous to its wielders, given how magic in Gaiden/SoV does in fact cost HP to cast. And Grima does seem to be using their mortal form as a conduit in some fashion, considering that FEH shows them using dragonstones for attacks other than Expiration, so surely not using a stone is deliberate. I mean, I assume we'll never get an Official textbook on Fire Emblem magical theory, but your headcanon certainly makes a lot of sense!

How Many?
He's a Ghost. She's his Guardian.  They've been through hell and back again and he cares for her more than anything in the world.
But sometimes - sometimes he hates this. He hates watching her die. He hates the phantom pains that haunt her, the nightmares that plague her. He hates watching her suffer and most of all, he hates himself for dragging her from the grave for some divine purpose.
How many times?
How many times has she thrown herself into a fight? How many times has he watched the Light fade from her eyes? How many times has he heard her scream as every bone shatters - as every bullet shreds flesh and tendon? How many times has he watched her crumble to the ground?
Too many.
Her time as a Guardian has changed her in ways he can't begin to hope to repair. It's not something a simple rez can fix and he hates it.
What have I done?  He asks himself for the millionth time.
She's perched on a beam that, quite frankly,  she has no business sitting on, but she ignores the pointed warnings from the janitors and passing guards. Whether it's intentional, or she simply doesn't hear them, he isn't sure. In moments of silence like these, she often gets lost in her own thoughts. Of course, he can hardly pry those thoughts from her lips.
She'll just...sit and absently stroke his shell. He's reminded her he's not a pet, but the repetitive trail of her thumb over smooth metal seems to sooth her.
He won't take that away from her.
In truth, he rather enjoys it himself. He can't register the sensation, not like other life forms. But it's the sense of warmth it brings her, a sort of comfort that he can offer - he'll tolerate it, if only for her sake. And as the years have worn on, it seems like it's the only way he can reach her. When she's in that-that trance, he can - on very rare occasion - get an answer about what's going through her head. It's alarming how many times it's about someone she couldn't save.
And then she met him.
The Crow, he calls himself, though he wears the face of Uldren Sov. She hates him, at least, she did when they first met. She'd slammed him against the nearest wall, the Ace of Spades pressed menacingly to the underside of his jaw and it's the most emotion her Ghost has seen from her in what feels like a lifetime. It terrified him and he wasn't the only one. The fear in Crow's eyes haunt the Little Light - if it hadn't been for Osiris, she might've killed him. At least, she would've tried. The Crow has a Ghost and she hated him, too.
But then he spoke.
He introduced himself, apologized for upsetting her. Her Ghost had never seen her so stunned. Crow offered her his hand and while she refused it, she seemed to be intrigued. There was still tangible rage in her eyes but whatever Crow is, it raised more questions in her mind than not.
And then the Spider explained. Crow's arrival - he's a Guardian, however perverse it may be. She looks at him and she looks less...angry and they work together. He seems to grow on her, she doesn't flinch every time he speaks, she seeks him out after Wrathborne hunts to sit and watch the sunset on this warped Shore while the Crow rambles about arbitrary things.
She still doesn't speak but she is calm, calmer than her Ghost has seen her in years.
And then one night - one night he holds her hand as the sun descends beyond the hills and she stares at him with a myriad of emotions. He starts to recoil and she pulls him in for a kiss.
Glint thinks it's cute and her Ghost has to agree.
She cradles his jaw with a tenderness her Ghost didn't realize she could muster for anyone but him. She melts beneath the Crow's fingers along her neck and they stay there in the waning light, touching and searching for that piece of each other that makes them whole again while their Ghosts act as silent sentinels.
Months trudge on, more hunts, more sunsets until finally she frees him. He's a Guardian, he belongs with them, she tells her Ghost.
He's just relieved to see her smile again.
And then the Cabal - Caiatl. The Crow spends his time aboard the HELM, easier to see, more time at his side but behind a mask. She can barely get a moment with him away from the watchful eye of the Redjacks, from Osiris. And when he's spotted, she begs him to leave with her - fight beside her in the field. But Zavala isn't safe, he has to be safe he tells her and she relents.
Her Ghost watches her throw herself into one ceremonial battle after another. It's desperate, blind. The sooner this is over, the sooner she can have him back at her side every night. At least, it's what she tells him.
Her Ghost knows better. She's terrified to lose Crow as she's lost everyone else. Her Ghost knows that she won't survive another loss - especially not him - not now. Gone are the days she held her gun to his throat, now are the days she clings to his chest and he does his best to soothe her.
She fell hard and her Ghost wonders if he'll be able to pick her back up when this is all over.
One final battle - that's all. One more battle and he's safe. She triumphs. Of course she does. And then they get word - Crow is unmasked and Zavala? Zavala is conflicted, angry no one told him but he accepts it. Crow will be protected while Zavala plans, she gets to touch him again. No mask. No barriers. Crow holds her and her Ghost wishes he could smile.
She'll be okay.
She's his Guardian after all.

Am I making the post now rather than later? Yes, otherwise the thoughts will fly from my mind as surely as Lucent Moths from a broken shield. So, this very good post I reblogged earlier about FMA has a lot of alchemy lore. Which, duh, for a FMA post. But I couldn’t help but see parallels to Destiny as well. Especially since the Throne World armour and weapons have alchemical symbols and equations on them. I know there’s many a reddit thread pulling them apart, and I’m not here to discuss the specific alchemy being performed, but rather the themes of Destiny’s grander storyline in relation to alchemy.
So, Esteemed OP states “The three main stages of alchemy are names the nigredo, the albedo, and the rubedo. Nigredo, the black stage, is when the matter of the Stone “dies” and putrefies, representing spiritual death. Albedo, the white stage, is when the matter of the Stone is washed, boiled, and turns to vapor, which condenses back into water, and the cycle repeats. This represents spiritual ascension and unification with the divine. Finally, during the rubedo, this “volatile” matter becomes “fixed,” crystallizing into the Philosopher’s Stone. [...] Gold is a metaphor for the state of spiritual perfection.“
What I’ll port over to Destiny here is a quick and dirty play-by-play of the timeline: Nigredo, a time of darkness and death, the Collapse. Albedo, a time of light and reformation, the advent of Lightbearers/Risen/Guardians; which coincides with the union with the divine, what with the Light being gifted to Guardians by the Traveler: a divine entity. And Rubedo, volatile matter becoming fixed, crystallization... well, I don’t want to say “Stasis crystals” because I don’t actually think this holds water. But I think the current third act of the story, where we are now, is this process. We’ll see it come into clarity (ha) slowly until it’s final step in The Final Shape (which is fittingly named, isn’t it?). I kept the quote on Gold, mostly to conspiracy-board about the Witness’ “Luster” in Rhulk’s lorebook. Because “Luster” not only appears golden in game when Rhulk uses it, but the word itself means “shine”, usually associated with metal, especially gold (ime).
Moving on, a slight aside as OP quotes the Emerald Tablet:
“The Sun is its father, the moon its mother, the wind hath carried it in its belly, the earth is its nurse. The father of all perfection in the whole world is here.” —The Emerald Tablet
I can’t but remember Mara Sov: "I AM MARA SOV. STARLIGHT WAS MY MOTHER, AND MY FATHER WAS THE DARK." It’s backwards, but the construction is similar.
Now, while I don’t know enough about Queen Mara to involve her in this analysis, this brings us to the “Chemical Wedding” of Sun and Moon that OP described. Now, Destiny doesn’t make a big deal of the sun and moon. But it does make a big deal of Light and Dark, which stand in for the same concepts. And while both the Gardener and Winnower are genderless, Fynch describes the Traveler as “he” in his dialogue. Tied to this, the Witness’ Prophecy Wall in the Vow of the Disciple raid, states this (capitalised words are the symbols from the wall, linking words added for clarity):
“ the Hive and Scorn Love the Darkness and Worship the Witness the Pyramid Fleet will Enter the Earth and Stop the Guardian(s) the Witness will Commune with the Traveler and Drink Light the Witness will Kill [X]”
We don’t actually have the end of the prophecy. But I’m not after the entire thing. I’m after the third verse. The Witness wants to commune with the Traveler. We know the Witness is a, the, being of Darkness, a powerful one to the point they are synonymous. I think the Witness’ goal here isn’t to kill the Traveler, or even destroy the Light. Drinking something doesn’t destroy it, it means you take it into yourself. (There could be a Green Lion That Eats the Sun parrallel here but I’m not solid on this). The Witness wants perfection, wants finality.
OP gives us this breakdown of the guiding principles of alchemy: “ But real alchemy isn’t about chemicals, and it never really was. Real alchemy is a spiritual process, meant to transmute the soul from its “base” human state into a “perfect” spiritual state. The way to do this is to separate out the “subtle” from the “gross,” i.e. the higher spiritual self from the mundane and earthly human self, and then joining them back together so that the spiritual self purifies the mundane self. This is summarized by the Latin phrase “solve et coagula,” to dissolve and to congeal, or alternately, to separate and to bring together. “
Savathun tells us the Witness was once mortal. And while nothing the Witch Queen says should be trusted, I think this might be a truth. The Witness seeking to transmute itself into a perfect state, not per the Sword Logic, no. No, it uses people who follow the Sword Logic, because real perfection is not achieved by cutting alone (solve), but by cutting and joining (coagula).
The duality of Solve e Coagula is incredibly strong in Destiny’s universe. As forces: The Light grows, joins, it is an additive process. It is Coagula. The Darkness cuts, separates, it is a reducing process. It is Solve.
And none understood this power more than... Clovis Bray I. He’d already thought of the alchemical ties when experimenting with Clarity: Alkahest, the Darkness-infused solvent that distills, separates, the human mind, the spirit, the soul, from the body (which he though base in more ways than one), and allows it to transcends into his vision of perfection: the Exo.
Clovis Bray I was an alchemist. His problem, his error and why he ultimately failed, was that he didn’t get to the step where he put Light into the matter (also his rampant and overwhelming misogyny would have kept him from androgynous perfection anyway, asshole). He didn’t listen to the She-Wolf, Alpha Lupi (which we know to be an avatar of the Traveler), in his dreams. That dream implies that Alpha Lupi, the Traveler, guided him to Clarity and Stasis.
Why would the Traveler, a being of Light, do that? Unless the Argument, the way to win the Flower Game, isn’t to use one, or the other of Light and Dark, but to achieve Perfection.
The Winnower banked on the Witness, who is incoming to drink the Light and achieve its Great Work. The Traveler... didn’t plan very well and seems to have been casting out hints to Humanity as a whole... Until: Us.
The Player Guardian, the Young Wolf (remember how the Traveler represents itself as a wolf?)
So far, the Player Guardian is the most accomplished entity to wield both Light and Dark. Guardians as a whole are capable of it not, but the Young Wolf was the first. And if the influence of Light and Dark are the purifying actions of solve e coagula, then only entities who use both can achieve perfection. Going back to Mara Sov: she made the Awoken with influences both of Light and Dark, and from my understanding, she sought perfection in their creation.
I don’t know what’ll happen in Lightfall, or the Final Shape. But I’ll go back to OP’s wonderful post and pull out some relevant quotes:
“The goal of the alchemist is to become the Philosopher’s Stone, the place where Human and Divine meet and become one thing.“
“ The first stage of the alchemical process is nigredo, death — watching your old self die away so that it can be reborn as a better version of itself.”
“Who am I? One name you might have for me is The World. Or you might call me The Universe. Or perhaps “God.” Or perhaps “The Truth.” I am All, and I am One. So of course, this also means that I am you.”
Which gives us that
The Philosopher’s Stone isn’t a literal rock, but a state of being, a shape that one takes, a perfect shape beyond which no further change is required. You might even say: A Perfect Final Shape.
To become perfect, to improve, you must let your old self die. This in some part parallels Guardians being literally reborn from the dead. And partly invokes Lightfall for me. For a Guardian to achieve perfection, they must let their old self die away. In the case of the Young Wolf, that is not their mortal self, but their idea of themselves as a Guardian. (I am worried for Ghost, here) especially since:
This is OP quoting FMA’s Truth. And I’m just going to toss up this old chestnut from the Speaker: “ The Light lives in all places, in all things. You can block it, even try to trap it, but the Light will find its way.” Destiny has always insisted that the Light is everywhere, from the Speaker to Misraaks saying as much to us. And the Dark is the same way: the Witness (imo, I can be wrong) telling us there is Darkness (reduction, subtraction) in our cellular processes, to Elsie enouraging us to tap into the Dark Within in Beyond Light. I am once again worried for our Ghost. True perfection would be to embrace our own inner Light (which btw is a track in the vanilla D2 soundtrack), not to rely on an outside source.
And in the end... well, OP’s finishes with the end of FMA, which Ed and Al getting their bodies back at the cost of their powers. But they achieved their purpose, they don’t need alchemy anymore. Their Great Work was completed and they can move on now. Alchemy, power, was a tool, not a destination in itself.
And for Destiny, for the Saga of Light and Dark... Elsie and the assorted Darkness/Stasis crew, even Ada, tell us Stasis is a tool. Darkness and Light are tools, they are power and power is not a destination. Perfection is. Once perfection is achieved, what use is there for power? Unveiling implies the Gardener and Winnower have played the Flower Game many times. And once the Final Shape emerges...
What happens then?
According to Bungie’s roadmap, the answer is simple: The story ends.

my awoken evil risen warlord in canon destiny armor and fantasy au too... her name is Skkathie, when she was human she was Skaði. backstory under the cut
Also, recommended music that basically was the reason why i made her: The Magician by Æther Realm (please, i adore the lyrics and they are the sole base for her dnd backstory)
CANON DESTINY BACKSTORY: One of the original Yang Liwei passengers; after awakening, she was an Eccaleist who believed in words of Diasyrm, and she fought and died in Theodicy War. One of her siblings survived, and they felt like they owe a debt to their family for dying for such causes, so they carried their family back from Distributary and planned to bury them on Earth. After arriving back to regular universe, Skatthie was Risen by a ghost as soon as possible. The ghost (later named Vetle after her sibling, but she didn't remember that) believed her to be a savior and steady hand to fight back the remaining warlords, and help the City. But she wasn't risen the way the guardians usually are, for her feelings about betrayal from queen Alis Li, the memories of her being human, and turning into an Awoken aboard the ship were so strong, she still seethed with rage and disappointment enough to recall her life before death. She did not know why she's not in Distributary, nor could she remember her family, so she fled. She fled to Earth, to a familiar place, after travelling around Mars, Mercury and Venus, and other previous homes of Traveler, but she only felt at home on Earth, with the terraformed and completely changed Denmark, where she was born. Her steady hand was true, and she became a warlord, quite late for her time, but cruel and not caring. She hated Traveler for resurrecting her, and she hated him for interfering with Yang Liwei, and she hated Mara Sov for the way awoken we born, and for the lies about eccaleism and Alis Li.
She refused the Traveler and his Light, only learning bare minimum to survive, she never mastered a subclass or element. She was risen with a burning sword in her hand, and it was the only weapon she used for years. She then learned invisibility from hunters, she altered the titan shield to become a burning shield with her sword, and she learned to consume void from other warlocks, but she never needed them as her fire was strong enough.
After being confronted by Iron Lords, Felwinter the Oathbreaker including, she modified her ghost to have "less personality" and left for Europa. She met the House of Salvation there, and appealed to them, proving herself in combat and in will, and was given Stasis power behind Eramis' back. Atraks, her friend, helped her master it, and she felt like the ice was the only element she needed to wield, so she abandoned her Light. She has learned stasis abilities of all classes.
Ultimately, she does not believe all Guardians should die and does not seek their end, but she will not answer or bow to the Traveler.
Tumblr media
FANTASY/D&D AU BACKSTORY: A drow born into a family-commune of sorcerers, she was born with unusual talent and high spirit and soul, capable of great things. She did not fit in, and was an outcast and not-equal to the rest, so she refused to learn to use spells the way her family does. They attempted to force her into this, for such talent cannot be wasted and the help she could do with healing, warmth in the ice-cold north they lived in, and foresight she could perceive future with, they were not willing to let this go to waste.
She burned a pyre into the village, instantly killing people close to her, and scarring the ones further, and ran away to seek true power.
She sought an elemental plane of ice, further north, and after many failures to even get their attention, she met a jötunn, one of the Ice Giants, who was willing to listen to her. He happened to be a speaker for a divine power, and he took her to his gods, ancient giants who have ascended to be the most powerful, and one of the Ice Gods granted her new power and new way to use it, with promise of her bringing upon the Ragnarok. She swore her soul, and found her arms getting carved with runes. She could no longer feel frost and cold, and she found frozen crystals to naturally develop and manifest on her clothes, and on her hands. Her first act was to bring bloody and cruel revenge on her place of birth, and left no one alive.
+ the runes bc they're hard to see

Okay, here are the Destiny characters and their Hogwarts house.
Zavala: Gryffindor, He's head boy as well.
Ikora: Ravenclaw, she would also be head girl and captain of the Ravenclaw quidditch team and plays Chaser.
Cayde-6: Slytherin, most would say Gryffindor or Hufflepuff, but the fact that this guy literally did anything to get out of the tower (if not everything [He took Eris's ship for crying out loud], if he even could get out) shows determination, cunning, and ambitious some of the traits needed for a Slytherin. Plus, he's the one Slytherin always in determination for something stupid (like 'accidentally' slipping a puking pasty into the professors food).
Lord Shaxx: Gryffindor, for obvious reasons and the fact he'd be the Gryffindor Quidditch captain playing as a Keeper. He's also the kind of Gryffindor that helps you when you're in trouble because he cares.
Lord Saladin: Gryffindor, nothing needs be said. Would also be on the quidditch team.
Banshee-44: Hufflepuff, because why not. He's loyal, dedicated, diligent, and kind. Though he has a bad memory, he's willing to help.
Amanda Holliday: This woman radiates Gryffindor, there's no need to explain.
Drifter: Slytherin, his lore and the fact that he's sly and cunning. He's the kind to weasel his way out of detention and get away with sneaking about and looking suspicious. He's also the seeker on the slytherin quidditch team.
Eris Morn: Ravenclaw. If anything, I see Eris in the Hogwarts library with piles books around her on the Hive and their magic. She's also the schools loner and tends to go into the room of requirement as well.
Suraya Hawthorne: Slytherin. She is the definition of Determination and Ambition. She was determined to protect those who lived outside the city walls and achieve her goals of doing so.
Osiris: Ravenclaw. I see Osiris as more of a professor and the head of Ravenclaw house. He teaches Divinations and Ancient Runes.
Saint-14: Hufflepuff, and head of Hufflepuff house. He's the Care of Magical Creatures professor and has a pet owl pigeon that sits on his shoulder.
Uldren Sov: Slytherin, for obvious reasons. He's basically Draco Malfoy... He's also a chaser on the quidditch team and a flirt with the girls, and sometimes boys.
Mara Sov: Slytherin, if she wasn't hot, I'd call her Delores Umbridge (I'm not a fan of Mara, didn't really like her from the start anyway).
Petra Venji: Gryffindor, though loyal to her queen, PV shows immense bravery and courage. She'd definitely be a beater on the quidditch team.
Ana Bray: Slytherin, this girl is the book smart Slytherin who does their homework. She can also speak parseltongue and has a pet snake named Rasputin.
Asher Mir: Ravenclaw. He's the annoying Ravenclaw that aces every test, does all his homework, and his always reading textbooks. Hates anything that doesn't help him succeed in the class room, like quidditch.
Sloane: Gryffindor, she will fight for you or fight you. There is no in-between.
Vance: Hufflepuff, his loyalty to Osiris should be enough.
Failsafe: Hufflepuff? Honestly, I'd place her here because I don't know where else she'd go.
Exo Stranger: Ravenclaw, I don't know much about her, but she screams Ravenclaw.

Honestly, with everything that happens in SoV and how much blood is shed because of Mila and Duma, Naga should have just killed them both after she defeated the both of them. It would have saved so many lives and spared Valentia from 3000 years of being split in half. Mila and Duma both knew what would happen if they picked a fight with their king and Naga had every right to kill them both or at least kill Duma considering what he did at Thabes might have damaged dragon-human relations for good
Tumblr media
Okay that’s really extreme wow where do I even start.
First off, why do you feel that killing them was the answer?  Execution is never my go-to option.  I generally commend Naga for not killing them (and I don’t commend her for much) because execution is a brutal response to just about any crime and not something that should ever be taken lightly.  And considering that Thabes was a potential threat to dragonkind, given the experiments they were delving into, I think Duma’s response -- while extreme and by no means justifiable -- does make sense considering the trials that dragons have gone through.  He was protecting his own people from a perceived threat, and while wiping out a whole city was certainly a terrible idea, it comes from an understandable place, not indifferent from Edelgard’s war on the Church.
Also, since when does one being ever have a RIGHT to kill another?  It doesn’t matter if Naga is the king of the Divine Dragons, she doesn’t have the right to murder.  NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO TAKE A LIFE.  Killing is not something you can have a moral high ground on.  Even if Duma’s actions did damage human-dragon relations, saying that he deserves to be killed for the destruction of Thabes in perceived defense of his own people who are severely outnumbered by humankind basically says you agree with Naga that human lives are more important than dragons, and I could not disagree more.  They’re two distinct intelligent species: neither one is more or less important than the other, and both of them deserve to live and thrive.
And just so we’re clear, please remember that for all the harm Duma and Mila caused on Valentia, Naga’s hands aren’t exactly clean over on Archanea, either.  Jugdral is entirely on her: she didn’t bother getting involved there until the death toll at Loptyr’s hands was into the hundreds of thousands, and then she only gave a weapons to humans and left again, leading to another fifteen years of war and more lives lost.  It was directly caused by another dragon, and she did nothing.  You can’t really condemn Duma and Mila for causing human suffering without also condemning Naga, because Loptyr’s reign directly ties back to the dragon war where she led the Divine Dragons in defense of humanity, nearly causing the extinction of her own people.  Why should Naga get a pass on this massive loss of life when Mila and Duma don’t in your mind?
And in all honesty, I don’t feel bad for Naga in the least in regards to Duma’s and Mila’s actions.  What Duma did at Thabes wasn’t a betrayal: he was doing what he had always done as the Kingsgrail, which entailed protecting the Divine Dragon tribe.  He perceived Thabes as a threat to his people and took action -- again, not in a way that’s justified, but one that’s understandable.  It was Naga who decided to attack him rather than try to understand him, and Mila just chose to side with her brother in a conflict between two dragons who were impossibly dear to her.  Why should Naga be the one deserving of pity when Duma was the one who didn’t even get a trial, just a judgment, and Mila was the one caught between a rock and a hard place who chose to side with her family in the hopes of keeping him alive in the face of an enemy he likely couldn’t stand against alone?  Naga burned her own bridge with them: she had a chance to try and work things out peacefully, but instead she went straight to combat.  Any trust issues that came from that are on her, since she’s the one who made a snap decision that Duma was a traitor after knowing him for countless years; if she saw this as a change of character, that just shows she wasn’t paying the least attention to him.

Boons and Banes
Boons
Lance: This goes without saying. Berkut excels at using polearms, especially on horseback. As Rudolf also uses lances, following in his uncle’s footsteps has been primarily what has driven Berkut to practice. He’s always down to train with a worthy opponent to further perfect his skills.
Authority: Berkut is a charismatic and skilled general. He was granted the title at a young age, but for good reason. His soldiers listen to his command without question, and he’s a practiced tactician. The teenage hubris that led to his downfall in SoV has been tempered a bit with age and he manages to keep a more level head when he’s frustrated now... except with matters involving Alm.
Heavy Armor: Berkut’s speed is horrendous, but his HP and defense are both rather respectable. I like to think that it’s due in part to his armor, which is bulkier than the average Valentian cavalier/paladin. Rudolf also wears pretty sturdy armor, and Berkut will do anything to be like his uncle. As a result, he’s gotten pretty good at maneuvering in heavy armor.
Banes
Sword: While Berkut has trained with short swords (it’s wise for a paladin to carry one, in the event that his lance is knocked out of his hands), it’s definitely an area of weakness for him. He’s not as quick on his feet as he is when he’s on horseback, and he puts too much weight behind his strikes, leaving him open to be easily countered.
Faith: Berkut has never trusted the Duma Faithful, and seems suspicious of magic in general. For him, religion is tied directly to fanaticism and deviance, so he tends to avoid the spiritual. He’s not really the kind of person to lend support from the backlines anyway.
Hidden Talent
Reason (bane): Similar to Faith magic, Berkut also doesn’t trust Reason magic. The Duma Faithful were just as skilled with black magic as they were with white, after all, and Berkut has always viewed it as something the lends itself too well to backhanded trickery. He prefers straightforward and honorable victories. However, due to Duma’s magic lingering in Berkut’s right hand (from reaching into the divine flames to retrieve Kriemhild), he does have a hidden talent for spellcasting. If ever he were to actually sit down and study it, he would find Fódlan’s Reason magic to be logical and methodical, which would appeal to his preference for organization. His spells would be a mixture of Dark and Fire elemental.
