It’s a spot in Bavaria known to locals as “Der Saurerort.” Legend has it that in 1813, Napoleon’s army conscripted several thousand men from the region to fight in his disastrous Russian campaign. None returned.

Of those thousands, many were fathers or fathers-to-be. Their children were raised in orphanages, or left to take care of their families as the men of the house despite being only months old, as per the gender norms of ancient Europe and most of modern Texas. They were called “The Bitter Children” or the “Sons of the Sour Patch.”

This is irrelevant to the candy however, as the factory that makes Sour Patch Kids had already been there since 1603. History is full of coincidences.
