The Associated Press, in an article on December 18, 1943, called this contraption "compact." It was a tape recorder that was available for consumers. "It can be plugged into a microphone, radio, or telephone for recording; then a flip of a switch sets the machine to play the record back," the press service reported excitedly. "The tape permits eight hours of recording or playing without changing. The inventor, Jay Fonda, a longtime cinema sound man, got his idea from the movie soundtrack." They added that the device "might upset the recording industry."

Today marks 110 years since the search party from Cape Evans discovered Scott's tent, and thereby the story of what had befallen the Polar Party since they were last seen nearly a year before. Silas Wright was the one who actually spotted the top of the tent sticking out of the snow, and you can hear him as an old man recounting the moment of discovery in this episode of Great Lives.

[...] We made the first one, it was the first Looney Tune called "Sinkin' in the Bathtub", and that started it. We were kinda finding our way, cause no one really know what the story was, really. Just having the character do something. The director said "do about twenty feet here, and see if he meets a goat, or something, on the road". You add gags to it [...] The only way we got synchronizing was we had to do it to rhythm. And the little girl [Honey] would say "Hello, Bosko", so we just do it to a beat so we can synch. There was no other way to synch, we couldn't read tracks then, we didn't know anything about that.

What is something that you thought might be true for a bit but turned out not to be?
I read a story in a kid's church magazine about how the sound of people talking "during Bible times" was accidentally recorded on a clay pot by a potter's wheel… and that "scientists" had recovered ancient sounds.
The librarian wasn't able to help me find anything. I really wanted to hear the sounds!
It was one of the first things I searched for online. I was so disappointed. (But, I've always promised myself I'd include something like that in a story. That's part of what I like about writing stories. All the cool things that *ought* to be real can be... for a while.)
What's your wistful hoax?

Here are the videos I watched about sound recording, in case anyone else is interested too. I had looked for one of those explainer type videos - "this is how hollywood films record and mix sound!" - but all I found were instructional videos.

Oh wait! I just found some explainer type videos. Apparently I just need to search for sound mixing instead.

In spanish dub, Senshi says: "tocó mis senos de hombre", which means "he touched my man boobs" in Spanish. And I think that's the best dub line one so far.
