Given the thematic direction, I am 99% sure this is gonna turn into overthrowing him and improving the status quo, it's just taking a while to get there and the characters keep backsliding and being separated and such shenanigans. But honestly while I have grown to love the characters over time I am reading this one for the worldbuilding/story puzzles, there is so much intricate foreshadowing and theory fuel everywhere! If I was reading for the characters I wouldn't have made it past book 1 tbh

Okay, yeah.

That's what I think it was for me... I just never felt invested in the characters. Gideon felt to me like a stereotypical jock written by someone who doesn't like jocks or think of them as smart or interesting at all (which is very unlike my experience of passionately athletic people and feels a little mean spirited?), and Harrow just seems arrogant in a way that's not very likable either.

I get that they're like this because this is supposed to be a tragedy about emotionally realistic abused kids who have absolutely no support system, but... I don't get why that's something I should... like? I'd need to see kernels of hope within the characters, which I'm imagining as DETERMINATION!!! but could probably be any number of things.

I just felt like I was waiting for those and never really saw them? And I want to see them at least by chapter 2.

Or people talked about the gayness and how it was great? But all I saw there was Gideon seems to like girls in her porn. Didn't seem like a very complex thing there either. And if Gideon ends up dead, then the OTP can't even consummate their feelings, unless there's some creative way to have soulsex or something.

Cravings

This craving. The thing that haunts me. This craving that refuses to be satisfied, and so makes way as if leaving then creeps back to my doorstep.

It’s name? Love. But not love as it is culturally known, agape love. Love that overflows from within, the kind that blesses all that cross your path. The love that touches your soul, cuts off the strings that tie your soul down, and shows you how to stretch your wings. But what happens when such a craving can’t be met? I feed it with more attainable imitations. In order to have some form of satisfaction I fill the hole with lust, pursuit of power, books, chitchat, etc. For a while it’s sustained. I think it would leave because after everything it stops and I no longer hear it’s voice. But it’s still there, I feel it. I try to remain calm because all things happen as they should, but when you want your soul touched nothing will ever satisfy you.
