So I might've chosen the idea I want to slowly work on during this summer, when I find time and energy for it. And as I've been outlining it, the plot is turning out to be quite big and possibly complicated, at least most complicated I've ever tried, so wish me luck.

found this absolutely delightful bit in the general history of the pyrates, p89 (internet archive / project gutenburg)
"... once upon a Cruize, [members of Blackbeard's crew] found out that they had a Man on Board more than their Crew; such a one was seen several Days amongst them, sometimes below, and sometimes upon Deck, yet no Man in the Ship could give an Account who he was, or from whence he came; but that he disappeared a little before they were cast away in their great Ship, but, it seems, they verily believed it was the Devil."
like, (a) that is an extremely cool story, the idea of the devil walking among blackbeard's crew, only evinced by the fact that everyone keeps individually spotting someone they don't recognise among the crew, but no one else can identify him...
but also, (b) the idea that it's stede, and the reason no one will admit to knowing who it is (particularly to the authorities) is because stede bonnet is meant to be dead, so everyone makes this unspoken agreement not to snitch no matter how obvious it is, like --
rando: who's that guy? frenchie: who? r: the blond guy over there, near the helm. he's new, right? f: I don't see a blond guy r: yes you do, right there! he's waving at us! f: nope, never seen him before in my life r: he's walking towards us and addressing you by name! f: much be another frenchie out there i guess r: you just said hello to him! f: well sorry for being POLITE to this STRANGER who's definitely not the gentleman pirate or anyone who's meant to be dead or anything r: you're hugging right now! f: must be the devil, i guess

spinning off of "winston being fantastically (literally fantastical (literally related to fantasy)) clairvoyant (he is also figuratively clear-sighted / figuratively preternaturally perceptive just like, in the show. which is where this all comes from. plus him calling himself cassandra, always seeing the future. he really has always / continued to be thusly) and taylor literally has a broadsword" type fun and games that are very loosey goosey b/c billions aus go spinning off into their own separate dimensions super easily when billions canon is so rooted in its specific Stage Settings of modern day US law n finance battles in the office, sidewalks, and eateries:
the thought of winston & tuk and winston gets to be a fairy. jokes, please. changelings are right there with the common theory of "was this to explain disabilities & go 'something could go Wrong and the baby's not a Person and get rid of that,' unlike nowadays where people do that but go 'b/c that baby's disabled'" and also one goes Thinking Emoji about how apparently New Mothers and New Brides were susceptible along with New Borns to become swapped out with a fairy and now something's wrong with them and get rid of that. had to be about Something given that people apparently did act on changeling lore and martin luther is taking a stance like yeah another thesis, it's important to kill them And okay to kill them b/c they don't even have a soul anyways. okay thanks martin luther....meanwhile also witchcraft and getting after anybody for that too. and fairies generally as Problems, the etymology going back to [fate], the range like "ooh hehe causing funny little inconveniences just because" to more so "yeah they could cause life-threatening illness for that" and "yeah they'll just kill you"....and i think fairy/fey as respective noun/adj re: being gay is of Unknown Origin, like "gay" also is. and you never know, if being fey is like, well something's not right and it's dangerous, whether this is the inspiration....though by the time this slang starts turning up, and even in the time of prior possible origins / the roots in other usages / potential inspirations, theoretical actual fairies are surely becoming more Fanciful, this being around like, the 18th century, rather than "here's martin luther telling you to immolate! that! baby!"
but that like, you can have it all ways out here. the Always Small fairies i think being a later kind of victorian deal, rather than "fairies are shapeshifters & can become animals e.g. & May have a 'tiny little inches or millimeters high mode' but that's just a mode & the fact that generally though they just look like people, maybe with some stylistic variations and tells, means watch out" and i think wings came up ever, across yknow the various centuries and regions of folklore out here lmao and possible origins / influences yet further across time & regions & cultures, but again "always small and always winged" being a very relatively modern victorian deal. but we can draw on that to be sure when, additionally, a Potential mutual [would prefer to avoid] between fairies and humans (as opposed to "if your house or some shit is on a fairy path bestie just build them another door to walk straight through cuz they're Gonna") becomes "no, fairies mostly avoid humans more than the other way around" type of imbalance of any threat means like, well hey sure, the Real Self could then become a tiny little magical guy having fun with wing designs who is shy and elusive but maybe another fun little guy can accidentally become aware but then have a secret little hidden friendship hmm....
but then also just thinking of the version where you just look exactly like everyone else and live amongst them, changeling style. and potentially don't Know you're different, or at least not Why, b/c this is a "from birth" thing like hmmm ya don't say. and the whole thread where in some folklore fairies Aren't nonhuman, the difference is only about the separate fairy Realm you live in, which is different, with like "yeah sometimes fairies come from people who died." and alongside / overlapping with everything like "yeah you could disappear for a few days to that realm and then be like 'don't wanna / can't talk about it'" and whatever all various like "watch out for the liminal and unknowingly wandering or being taken into the fairy world and Then watch out for communing with them b/c then you could be Permanently affected, or permanently continually affected or vulnerable, or just stuck there. and we wouldn't want that" like well don't let them know your name but maybe try to find out their names b/c you can get at them in turn that way, don't get in on any food, don't get in on any parties. though variations, sometimes people getting whisked away for particular tasks that apparently Only humans can do. or forever potential for helpful / sympathetic fairy interventions in life. like fairies raising humans b/c their human parents were awful
also, that some classic Tests for "is your baby a changeling?" were very like, "well i guess if we drowned or burned that person and they just died about it....our bad," in the way that like apparently the way to go could be "put them in the fire. where they'll either burn or fly out the chimney." or "start going tf beating them with objects. so that they go away" like and they never stop beating winston with hammers out here!! or the classic "idk abandon them in the forest so fairies can take them back" like well they do also like [i prefer to pretend winston doesn't exist / forget that he does] lmao. this isn't really related. just the ol "ballpeen hammers kind of goated when it comes to putting someone in a sack and beating them to death" factor out here for your local changelings
also sure thinking of like ohh watch out for winston and his gayass Realm he exists in which is wrong and not of our own and potentially will forever change you with its gayass ways. uh oh don't get corrupted into a whole other powerful magical mode of existence if you commune with him in some deep fundamental nourishing ways. oh nooo watch ouuuut....one of the "you might be a changeling if" moments being "when they think they're alone do they act up?? dance??" like yeah i'm stimming and bursting into motion and making noises and existing wrong when i think i'm alone. Old Souls (theory as well that newborn changelings were secretly elderly fairies)....existence in the Fey Realm just making you different and out of place huh. and it would just be a guy though like either [undetectable except by already trying to kill them] and/or [actually just a human, fairies are just humans, fairies b/c they're in/from the fairy realm] but uh oh don't let him corrupt you. don't go hanging out with him and talking with him and partaking in his activities and embracing his ways. you'll be changed. you'll never fit in around here and be able to do things right ever again. we'll have to start beating you with hammers. and all for what. your weird gayass little guy and a whole possible other dimension of existence? vs all This? smh
#that fey little mf. all the same glasses hoodies cargo pants winston....#winston billions#you can't go wrong. sort of semi fantastical au. or just modern day ''fairies can even be in your hedge fund office'' magical realism#not even like there's clear Powers lol like what do fairies do? well bit fuzzy on that but one things for sure:#cause problems for US!!!! like wow the way symptoms & definitions of disabilities are approached much?#you might be a fairy if....ouch i'm dead of unclear causes in 1337. Not very 1337....#winston is truly always causing problems. also learned that ''oaf'' (another word i've recently thought like ''i would just not say that''#b/c for some reason the nyt i believe described orville wingate as [still an(?)] Oaf & i was like a) huh b) excuse me) derives from fairy#as it was a term for a changeling specifically :I which juuust so happens to lead to connotations of Stupidity(tm) & Clumsiness(tm)#hmm! you do not say it!#what could changeling winston do? up for grabs. but the point is: change(ling) your life. and other fun things :)#also i think another potential fairy ability was: seeing the future as well lol. it's all coming together#seeing winston with fun bird wings b/c you've communed with him ''too much'' already. not an angel thing. a fairy thing#(sidebar abt how some Lore was that they Are an angel thing. see: influence from whole other traditions lol)#winston Becoming a bird b/c he can do things like that b/c fairies are shapeshifters. he's a pigeon =) you have a nest for him =) cooing#another parallel like ''definitely don't fuck him or you're locked in to his gay autistic realm for sure''#just like how as a theoretically real world autistic person everyone just knows winston isn't allowed to have sex#nowadays how ridiculous to imagine going: we think someone is weird & dislike their vibes; they shouldn't exist. we should ostracize them#we would never be like; some corruption has caused your child to exist wrong. basically taking your Real child away from you#or when they do tragically exist that they should be driven away to any possible extent up to ''just kill them :( sorry for You btw''#with the Possibility fairies could give you your Real Human Child back....#autistic kid? number one recommendation totally isn't ''put them in specialized abuse school where we try to banish the autism for you''

yet another instance of when I sensed that the book was Leading Up To Something, and in the end it was Romance again rather than the sort of proper spooky tragedy that I'd come prepared for :|

Hi Lilli! What are you reading nowadays and what do you have on your tbr for the year?
hi anon! you've asked this question at a very opportune time as i was recently gifted an entire stack of books that i'm very excited to read, and my favourite bookshop had a flea market earlier this month. so there's lots to share!
i've been reading a lot of nonfiction lately, so to switch things up, i'm currently in the middle of the adventures of amina al-sirafi by shannon chakraborty. it is, so far, a very fun romp of a pirate story, but what i'm enjoying most is the realism in its relationships, the relevance of family and of interpersonal conflict and affection. there's emotional meat on these (delightful) quest-based plot bones. highly recommend this one if you're in need of a bit of an escape.
more assorted books from the tbr pile:
sing, unburied, sing by jesmyn ward - a somewhat magically realist novel about childhood and death and family; the reason i picked it up was that the couple of sentences i read in the bookshop were stunningly written, lyrical and gentle. can't wait to continue this.
eric by terry pratchett - i feel like i'm overdue to read this one, but i'll know when the time is right to pick it up. with discworld novels, you always do.
alec by william di canzio - this is a prequel, slash parallel story, slash sequel, to maurice by e.m. forster, focusing on alec scudder.
stories from the tenants downstairs by sidik fofana - what it says on the tin; the stories of residents in a house in harlem. fragmented narratives that interlock are always interesting to me, so i'm looking forward to this one.
waslala by gioconda belli - a long novel about a journalist, a lovestory, and the search for a utopian space known as waslala; thematically, i think it's principally concerned with the environmental injustices enacted on the global south.
ghost music by an yu - i'm pretty sure this is a novel about mushrooms, music, and a weird house. beyond those three elements, i have no idea what to expect. i'm so excited to read this.

Ohh you’re reading jonathan strange and mr norrell! I started it a while ago and got a chapter or so in before dropping off. I want to pick it up again one day because it seems really interesting and I adored Piranesi. Hopefully you enjoy it :)
omg i also started reading jonathan strange after i read piranesi because i loved it sm. i remember i read it in like a single afternoon bc i just couldn’t put it down. this book has been a little slower, but I’m enjoying it so far! i love a fiction book with footnotes tbh. if you do read it you’ll have to lmk what you think!

I think we should stop using fantasy as an excuse to keep defending lazy and/or self-indulgent writing.
Tumblr media
Flaws are very importantin story-telling. They have been important for centuries. Even overpowered characters like Gojo Satoru and Superman have flaws. Gojo's specifically has a harmartia that lead to his uh downfall.
Lets not propagate this kind of idea. I despise wattpad-esque writing/fanfiction. A bunch of people do, actually.
Although, there's nothing wrong with creating stuff like that. It's just that we have freedom of speech and we can criticize and give out opinions whenever we want. People have been critiquing books, movies, shows etc. since forever.

Guillermo del Toro is legit though. The other stuff... Not so much
ehhh i know a lot of people love him, and i've really loved his writing/speeches, but his movies have never really hit the mark for me ? i hadn't at all heard about his cabinet of curiosities prior to this: it was explained to me as analogous to hitchcock presents, which intrigued me a little. i'm not quite sure if it'll be my taste, though i've always found his work very complex + interesting conceptually

I hate that this is the rubric, but: The genre's considered some variety of fantasy to me if you pass the fireball threshold. If your mages can scry the future, vaguely curse somebody halfway across the world, summon monsters - cool. Can they cast fireball? No? Okay, you're magical realism, or cosmic horror, or some sort of supernatural detective drama. Fireball? That's a wizard, my dude. Enjoy your realms of awe and splendour.
Note that this, like the Bechdel test, isn't meant to be comprehensive or good (as, technically, our world passes, given what I can pull off with an air freshener and a BBQ lighter). It's just a bit of pattern recognition, and don't we all like hanging out with our good friends down by the creek, recognizing a pattern or two?

Do you remember that Aussie sword guy who used to talk about medieval weapons?
Tumblr media
And, like, he seemed pretty good at talking about swords and shit. He seemed to have a good grasp of the history and tactics. He'd analyze movie weapons for their realism and that was fun. He did demonstrations with real weapons. For a time I really looked forward to his videos popping up in my feed.
He seemed like a harmless sword-fighting aficionado.
But then I guess he wanted to spread his wings. So he started down an anti-woke path. Giving questionable critiques about media and feminism. He started defending boob armor by showing historical examples even though most of those were decorative and not battle ready like in the games.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then he admitted he was a fan of The Daily Wire.
Tumblr media
And that was disappointing.
I missed him nerding out about swords, ya know?
Well, Shad decided to spread his wings again.
He has become...
*bad French accent* An artiste.
You see, he types words into a little box. Then a little robot does a google image search and steals a bunch of art. Then that robot reconfigures that art to be nearly indistinguishable from the source material. Well... aside from the occasional artist watermark.
Tumblr media
Whoops!
A.I. art is very difficult. Sometimes when you type words into the box you get a woman with 5 lopsided anime tiddies. Or 20 fingers on one hand. It takes time and effort and experience to type in the perfect magic words so that you get something close to your imagination that doesn't belong in some sort of Lovecraftian horror ripoff.
For example, check out this cool "pirate hat" I asked A.I. to place on my head.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Clearly, I am not skilled enough at typing words into a box to get a proper pirate hat.
It. Is. Not. Easy.
I heard someone say you have to type things in a box for 10,000 hours before you start getting truly masterful generations.
I mean, you can't type "marathon runners" and expect that to actually work.
Tumblr media
THIS REQUIRES SKILL, PEOPLE.
And I am a lowly amateur. I can only dream of becoming the box-typist Shad has honed himself into.
The thing is... Shad is very upset.
He is upset that you don't like his "art" and he is ready to die on this hill.
So... before he croaks on a mound of bullshit, he has something to show you. He has created something truly brilliant and when you see it, he is convinced you will validate his considerable efforts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before I show you his "Not. Easy." artistic masterpiece I'd like you to sit with what he has said for a second.
Ruminate in the verbiage.
Process the ideas and points of view presented.
Digest his plea for you to accept and love his hard won battle after typing words into a box to manifest his imaginings.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Have you sat?
Ruminated?
Processed?
Digested?
Okay, here it is...

Hey Dr. Tingle, I understand where you're coming from, it sucks that people are so irony-poisoned that they don't understand that your work comes from a place of true passion.
But I am wondering - are your book premises meant to be taken entirely seriously? Because I always thought that the titles and images, while not *bad*, where meant to be read with a sort of lighthearted comedy, like the titles you pick and the contrastive style of your art seems like intentionally sort of amusing in tone and rhythm? Is that correct, or completely off base? Because I do feel like that's where people get primed to read more of a joke into some of these things than maybe was intended, and I think that it's true for the people who do take the writing seriously that they find the context a little amusing, also, and I don't know if that's on or off the intended track from your perspective.
Hope that makes sense! I don't want to come across as rude or anything
yes my books premises are meant to be taken entirely seriously.
i would say tinglers fall into genre of magical realism and erotica. i do not think of them as comedy although i understand that many, if not THE VAST MAJORITY of buckaroos see them that way. that said i often lean into comedy or have funny moments throughout, but honestly that is the way of almost ALL stories. funny things happen in every genre, but that does not make all stories comedy.
to my trot, what defines something as COMEDY is intent. the goal of comedy is to make you laugh. my main goal with tinglers in NOT to make you laugh, so i do not consider them comedy.
HOWEVER it is important to keep in mind that i am not the expert on my art just because i made it. if a buckaroo laughs at tinglers they are not wrong. it is just as much their art as it is mine, and my interpretation is not the END ALL BE ALL. just because i made a piece of art does not mean i know it better than you do, or that my opinion on it is more valid.
tinglers can be whatever you want, and i am not hurt or offended if you laugh at them. that difference in perception is whats so beautiful and powerful about art.
i think a good way to look at what i do is this: i am an absurdist PHILOSOPHICALLY, but absurdism is so often associated with comedy that sometimes buckaroos who do not know about the philosophy can think they are the same thing. something being absurd does not automatically mean it is meant to be funny. my art is also joyful, and i think joy and humor can also be confused sometimes.
all that is to say, laugh all you want buckaroo. you prove love is real in your own unique way

Today I bring you a creation I made for @kashmiresims / @ch4rmsing, whom you can also find streaming on twitch under the name Rachums. She wanted a way for her Sims to online date, and asked if I could move the Crystal Ball functionality by twojeffs to the computer. And it turns out, I could indeed! So today what I have on offer for you is an add-on mod for the computer that adds the Find a mate crystal ball functionality to the computer, meaning your Sims can hop on any time, find Sims they have great chemistry with, and thanks to the sims magic, have that Sim appear next to their computer ready to be greeted and romanced! For extra realism, changing the settings on what type of Sims you want to see as options has to be done by your Sim, so it's like they are setting up their profile for what they want, before they browse. The interactions are not set to be autonomous.
I have also made an updated version of my edited Monique computer (more info on what I edited previously can be found here), with this interaction added (you still need the mod as well). Some of you might be using Midge's more computer options which among other things added the gypsy matchmaking interaction to the computer, I also have a version that is compatible with that mod. If you use the Midge mod, grab the compatible version instead of the standalone. Yay flexibility and options!
Download standalone version Download Midge "More Computer Option" compatible version Download Monique's computer with the option added
The mod will not impact custom computers, if they have an internal menu. If the menu does not have custom options it needs to keep, you can probably make it compatible by going in and removing the TTAs/TTAB, and making sure the interaction table ID in OBJD is set to 81.
Some info: The "existing relationships" and "gender preference" settings are a little misleading. They apply to the target Sim, not your own Sim. So turning on or off gender preference, controls what sort of sexuality the target Sim has. Existing relationship refers to Sims who are married or the like, so whether or not you want to see only single Sims as options, or if Sims in prior relationships show as well.
Conflicts: Conflicts with Midge's "More Computer Options" mod, if you use that, please download the compatible version and make sure this mod loads after Midge's mod. Also conflicts with inteen package B, if you want to use this please make it load after inteen. I do not want to make a compatible version as I don't know exactly what inteen changed, and there's already multiple versions which gets confusing for you guys to figure out which to get. Not worth it :) The only thing you lose from inteen is whatever changes it made to computer menus. Load order will not help if there is a conflict not listed here, my mod needs every part to work so it either needs to be resolved, or you need to pick which one you want, like with inteen.
Credits: @kashmiresims for the idea and the lovely thumbnail, twojeffs for the crystal ball code imported to computer, @midgethetree for the use computer framework I used for the interactions, monique for the computer, chaavik for the AL version of computer
