The ask I got about my ADHD Eda headcanon analysis got deleted, but I'm here to share it anyways.

Okay so. After Them's the Break Kid came out a lot of people started headcanoning Eda having ADHD and I actually REALLY like and agree with that headcanon. And not because

"Omg she got distracted by fire!!! 🤪"

But because of how we seen her when it comes to school. Now most fans assumed Eda hates studying and learning. Which is fair, since in I was a Teenage Abomination she made it clear she hates school.

HOWEVER, then you remember she literally made a hidden tunnel that can be used to listen to the different classes. Because remember, she WANTED to learn different types of magic.

A lot of her problems with school aren't because it involves learning, it's the school SYSTEM she has problem with.

And in the scene where Luz was teaching Eda and Lilith how to use glyphs, she was using a traditional teaching system with desks and everything. Lilith liked it but Eda did not.

This also led fans to believe that Lilith was just smarter and did better at studying.

But then in the opening of Them's the Break Kid we see the both of them studying. Lilith is using flashcards and assumes Eda is not paying attention because she's playing with her ball.

But it turns out Eda not only knows all the material but knows more than Lilith.

To ME this reads as Eda being a hands on learner, (and possibly even a form of stimming) she learns through action and movement and hates having to sit still to learn like how you're supposed to do in school. And when she's able to learn this way she's actually very smart.

That could also be the reason she acts out so much in school, especially if she already knows a lot of the material being taught.

In fact, this is actually kinda a parallel to Raine. With Raine they were introduced as being smart, and then in Them's the Breaks Kid we learn they are also very powerful with magic but are underestimated because they are a bard.

Meanwhile Eda was introduced as being the most powerful witch on the Boiling Isles. And THEN in Them's the Break Kid we learn she is ALSO very smart.

Which is also meant to be a surprise in universe by how Lilith reacted. She didn't expect Eda to be that knowledge on the subject, especially more that HER.

AND she gets distracted by fire. In conclusion, this girl is mentally ill but we already knew that.

Okay so hear me out.

So when the Bite of 83 happens, obviously Evan's gonna experience some physical injuries to head.

I'm sitting here trying to figure out how the heck did Evan not like, lose his memories or something. His head got CRUSHED

What if Evan lost his memories because of the Bite, and Micheal has to help him

And then Evan asks Micheal why does he have a scar on his head

And why do some of his memories have Micheal tormenting him

And Micheal doesn't know what to say

Like Micheal is using this to be a better brother to Evan since he doesn't remember anything

And 2 things could happen:

1. he has to explain to Evan that he has been a horrible brother

2. He doesn't say anything about and lets Evan figure it out by memories possibly coming back or other people telling him

This was a late night thought and I wanted to hear your opinion of it

That's a really great idea, one that would be so fun to play with.

I think it'd be fun if Mike tried to be a Good Brother by reminding Evan of all the good times they shared together, but Evan has lost a lot of these good memories along with the bad, too. Mike tries reminding Evan of times when they were happy together, times when they actually felt like brothers, and is hurt to find that Evan has no recollection of some of the most important memories Mike has of Evan, of the happy memories that Mike clinged onto during the days/weeks/months that Evan was in his coma.

Maybe, in a more extreme case where Ev lost even more memories, most of the time when Ev looks at Mike, he just sees some... stranger. He knows Mike is his brother. He knows Mike is supposed to be important to him, so... why doesn't he feel very much when looking at Mike?

The idea you raise about Mike trying to keep the past a secret, and Evan gradually gets his memories back, reminds me a lot of my grab&go au. Grab&go Mike actively gets frustrated and mad at Evan when Ev starts remembering things, so it would be interesting to see if this Mike would do the same, or if Ev remembering would fuel his desire to be a Good Big Brother even more

But the idea of Mike confessing and trying to be honest as he strives to be a better brother is heartbreaking, too.

I've been thinking a lot lately about the grandmother hypothesis, which is the hypothesis for why female primate life expectancy is longer than the period in which the female is reproductively active for. (also wait i cant remember if this hypothesis applies to other animals as well or if it only applies to primates? ive really only studied both human and non-human primates so im a little bit clueless when it comes to evolution of other animals)

Like ok so hold on let me back up

So any biological organism has a life goal, and that is to reproduce as much as possible to make as many offspring as possible to ensure that your genes are being passed on to next generations. So when talking about evolution, an organism basically wants to have the best genes that allow it to survive long enough to reproduce, as well as reproduce as much as possible, and to ensure that their offspring reach reproductive age.

Now there are many different strategies to reach these goals, but for female animals that have low reproductive frequencies they have to expend a lot of energy in order to ensure that their offspring reach reproductive age. And when i say low reproductive frequency i mean like ok take humans for example, like you have a single baby and that takes nine full months, in that time the mother has to expend a lot of energy in order to grow the fetus, and then once the baby has been born, the mother then has to expend 18 years of energy raising the child till its an adult. Of course in humans this is different because like we dont live just to reproduce but thats what i mean with like female animals having to use up a lot of energy in order to pass on their own genes.

So basically, if a female animal's life goal is to reproduce as much as possible then why would they continue to live once they are no longer fertile? Basically the grandmother hypothesis is that females live longer than they are fertile for in order to help their own daughters raise their young.

It's super common at least in primates AGAIN CANNOT EMPHASIZE HOW MUCH ALL MY INFORMATION IS PRIMATOCENTRIC I HAVE A BACKGROUND IN ANTHROPOLOGY AND PRIMATOLOGY NOT ANY OTHER SORT OF BIOLOGY but its super common for first time primate mothers to lose their first few infants, and by lose i mean the infants will die because the mother is inexperienced. And that loss of life is like SUPER costly to the mother because she just spent x amount of time growing that baby and during that time she missed out on being able to reproduce so now not only is she back to square one but she essentially just wasted all that energy. BUT that mother that just lost an infant? well she has a mother, and that mother who is now a grandmother has tones of experience raising infants and is less likely to have an infant die on her. So the grandmother hypothesis is basically that females live past reproductive age in order to help their own daughters raise infants, which helps the grandmother ensure her own genes are being carried on for more generations by making sure her daughter is reproductively successful.

there are a lot of other really neat examples of like this sort of mothering? where like females with infants rely on the help of other females to raise their children. i just think its neat :)

Thank you for asking, mi rey, because I've been wanting to talk about these two for a while. (and I'm shy as hell to share lore now a days so I appreciate the ask)

So the short answer is: yes and no.

It was a complicated relationship, but not at all in a bad way. In my worldbuilding, some witches believe that there are different variations of soulmates--a specific one is more or less 'one soul split up into two bodies'. I don't have a name for it yet, but it's a rarer, somewhat more complicated form of ''we belong together".

That's what Casey and Baz were. They met when they were young, around mid teens or so, and just knew that there was something special about the other. And they've been best friends ever since. They've been through a lot together and have gone through several ups and downs--but their bond remained unbreakable.

It wasn't exactly romantic, but there was a deep and intense love between the two, as well as an intimacy, that often blurred the lines. After Irene (Casey's ex partner and Salem's mother) left, I don't think Casey dated much after. I can't see him with someone else (at least not yet, a lot of his life is still kinda foggy). And I don't think Baz dated anymore after either (again, I could be wrong, he's still somewhat new to me). They definitely slept around with others--Baz more so than Casey, but neither took on another long term partner.

So I do think that there might have been a stage in their relationship where they might have entertained the idea. They're always together, Baz practically helped raise Salem too, and no one else knew the other the way they do. The foundation of trust and love was already there.

I think had Casey survived, their relationship would have likely turned romantic. At least, that's the vibe I get. There's so many complex layers to them, they keep kinda teasing me that they did fool around at one point, but just as I go to explore that, I run into a block. 😂 So we'll see!

There's an article online 'Duke Humphrey of Gloucester in the eyes of posterity: Lancastrian rule and tudor propaganda' by Alessandra Petrina. I'm certain you've read it already but I thought I'd mention it Just in case.

I have indeed read it already but it was great to be reminded of it so I could go and read it again. If anyone else wants to read it, you can read it here (pdf from the publisher) or here (from academia.edu). It does a good job of explaining how the myth of “Good Duke Humphrey” came to exist without flattening it down to a simple narrative.

I really like Alessandra Petrina’s work on Humphrey a lot - I actually finally read her Cultural Politics in Fifteenth Century England: The Case of Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester last December and really loved it. It’s a bit outdated now, given it was published in 2004, but it’s just a really refreshing look at Humphrey’s political career and patronage, showing the ways he was engaged and active and not - as David Rundle argues - using his patronage to up his cultural cachet while being entirely disinterested in the results.
