Why I Believe Genie by SNSD is the Best Kpop Song EVER!

Ugh, “Genie.” How do I even begin to explain this masterpiece of a song?

The band SNSD, also known as Girls' Generation, is an 8 member group (formerly 9, but that is an entirely different story…) formed in 2007. The group consists of Taeyeon, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona, Seohyun, and former member Jessica. The girls are known for their powerhouse vocals, catchy songs, and their impact on K-pop as we know it today. The impressive feats and popularity they reached in the late 2000s paved the way for future groups. They have multiple iconic hits such as “Gee,” “Into the New World,” “The Boys,” and of course: “Genie.”

“Genie” is the epitome of pop. It was released in 2009 as the title track of their second EP. It's catchy and everything about it from the iconic, yet simple choreography to the adorable yet confident music video makes it all the better. You can't help but to smile and bop your head to the song!

The structure of the song is your basic verse, chorus, verse, chorus, dance break, final chorus — but it WORKS! Of course, I love the whole song, but the final chorus is the best part. The build up to this part and the execution is everything to me. It's the icing on the cake! When you hear Tiffany say, “DJ, put it back on!” You know sh*t is about to go down. Taeyeon hitting her high note while the others sing the chorus makes me ascend. Let me tell you something about Miss Taeyeon… She has a VOICE, and she is not afraid to use it. The girl isn't known as “Best K-pop vocalist” for nothing! This song is banned in my car, because this final chorus will make me put the pedal to the metal. The little harmonies and adlibs throughout the song are such tiny details that add so much to the song, as well.

The song is about love and granting the wish of their partner, hence the name “Genie.” I'm not a huge fan of songs about love and pining after boys, but I can't understand Korean, so I can look past this one. I thought this particular lyric was sweet: “Even if your overwhelmed heart was to explode/Even if it all flies away in the wind/Right now, this moment, the world is yours.” It's empowering and a good reminder to live in the moment rather than focusing too much on the future.

Even though the song was released well more than 10 years ago, the cheery vibe and popularity does not expire. The song will always be a classic and a fan favorite. No matter the current trends, the evolving industry, new groups, or different sound. "Genie" will always be timeless.
