“Case 002: Family Affairs”
A Busted Fanfic
Mango Six Café Seoul, South Korea -- Friday, 2018.10.12 -- I have a new client. I’m meeting the people I’m working with. I see. Do you think your client is trustworthy? I’m not sure, but so far everything looks good. Okay. Just be careful. It won’t be good for you to get hurt. Min-young stifles the grin rising to her face. She knows it’s childish, entertaining a crush like this, but she can’t help it. The man she’s decided to codename Manila is just so smart and kind and caring. It doesn’t hurt that he’s a sight for sore eyes, too. She stares at her phone and wonders if she should reply. She can just tell him ‘Thanks.’ That would make sense and would show she’s cool about everything. But she could also not reply, which would make her seem more hard-to-get and might just make him more curious. She wants this occasional texting each other thing to continue, but she doesn’t want him to really catch on to that by her continuously initiating their conversations. It won’t be good for you to get hurt. The grin finally comes. He cares about me. “Min-youngah?” Min-young looks up. “Oh. Detective Ahn.” She gets up from her seat and bows. “Annyeonghaseyo.” “Nae. Annyeonghaseyo,” Jae-wook greets her back, just as confused as she. “It’s been a long time. Are you well?” “Yes, thank you,” Min-young replies with an awkward laugh. “Are you doing well, Detective?” Jae-wook nods. “What are you doing here in Seoul? Last I heard, you were leaving for Spain.” “Yes, I was. I’ve been back for some time now,” Min-young says. She drafts probable reasons of why she’s there at the café in her mind for a moment (she doesn’t know if she can inform her former teammate of the new case she’s been given). Eventually, she says, gesturing at her phone, “I’m waiting for my friend.” “Oh, I see,” Jae-wook says, and it gives Min-young relief to see him lose interest in continuing their conversation. “Well then. I stopped by to get something to drink. I’ll just get...” “Okay, sunbaenim.” “...yeah.” Min-young bows goodbye. Once she knows Jae-wook won’t turn around to look at her anymore, she releases a sigh of relief. Out of everyone in their team, the seasoned detective was the only one whom she knew could see through everything. He may have seemed disinterested oftentimes, but that never meant the gears of his mind weren’t turning. She sits down just as the door to the café opens. “Welcome in, customer!” There is a loaded pause. Then, “What is this?” Min-young and Jae-wook both look at the newcomer. For the second time, Min-young is surprised by a familiar face. “Oppa,” Min-young calls. “Min-youngah. What are you doing—Oh. Detective Ahn. Annyeonghaseyo.” “Kwang-sooyah,” Detective Ahn greets, leaving the line to the counter. His brows draw slightly as he eyes the male and female detectives. “I haven’t seen you in a while.” “Yes, it’s been a long time,” Kwang-soo agrees, smiling politely. “I’ve been overseas and have just come back.” “I see.” “Oppa, what are you doing here?” Min-young asks. She cautions a glance at the veteran detective and decides that saying ‘You’re not supposed to be here’ to Kwang-soo could make her friend look suspicious. “I thought—” “Oh! Detective Ahn!” Jong-min’s presence further complicates things for Min-young. Five minutes ago, she only had her client’s behest to mind. Now, she has to worry about a detective who can smell a lie before it can even come into existence, a friend whose secret she knows and who knows a secret of hers, too, and a colleague who’s surprisingly skilled at finding even the most hidden things. “What is happening here?” Jae-wook finally asks the question. “All four of us are here.” “Isn’t this nice?” Jong-min says, his grin noticeably tighter and more forced. “We get to greet each other after some time.” “Ey, hyung, it’s obvious.” Kwang-soo looks at the two. “This is our team. We’re working the assignment together.” “Case? What case?” “What assignment are you talking about?” Kwang-soo stares at them as the catastrophe of words evaporate in the air. Then, he grins. “Kim Tae-hoon’s,” he tells them. Min-young stares at Kwang-soo, her expression betraying her surprise. The woman who approached her last week did say she will be working with a team, but she never thought it would be with K’s team. “So, did K refer us to Kim Tae-hoon-ssi, then?” “I don’t think so,” Kwang-soo answers. “Mr. Kim didn’t seem very favorable towards K.” “In what way?” “Well...he told me not to trust him.” “You talked to the client?” Jae-wook asks. “Yes, hyung. Actually, he came to meet me.” “He met with you?” “Yes, hyung.” Jae-wook thinks that over. “If that’s the case, then he must have given all three of you instructions, too.” The three exchange glances, waiting to see which one of them will cave in first and give the answer. Remembering all too well the veteran detective’s temperament, Min-young responds, “The woman that met with me told me to come here and wait for the other detectives I’m working with. She said they’ll come.” “I was told to pick up Kim Tae-hoon-ssi’s contact at the airport then come here at this café, hyung,” Jong-min says. “I was just told to come back to Korea,” Kwang-soo answers. Jae-wook mulls over these. “I was told to come here then go with the others to a restaurant in Myeong-dong.” He looks at Min-young. “He says two more will be waiting for us there.” “Sehunah and Sejeongah,” she says. Jae-wook nods. He checks his watch and then instructs, “Let me get my drink, then we should get going. We don’t want the young ones to wait.” “I probably should get something too,” Jong-min tells Kwang-soo. “Okay, hyung.” “We’ll wait here, oppa.” Jae-wook leaves, not acknowledging them. Jong-min goes, too, but he heads first to the restroom. “Detective Ahn doesn’t look very happy,” Kwang-soo says quietly to Min-young. He stifles a grin. “It’s not like we’re competing for money.” Long time of not hearing from each other, and then all of a sudden, we’re back together again. It is a bit upsetting, Min-young thinks but doesn’t say. Instead, she asks as quietly, “What are you doing here, oppa? I thought you said K doesn’t want you in Korea until he says you can come back?” Kwang-soo stares at her, surprised and obviously offended. “I thought you would be happy to see me?” “Ah, oppa, it’s not like that.” “You told me when you came that you hope to see me here soon. How can you change your mind so easily?” “No, no. It’s just that I don’t know what’s happening right now. I’m confused,” Min-young confesses. “With me, oppa, I’m okay. You told me about K’s instructions, and honestly I don’t mind you leaving your station for a while. I won’t say anything. But what about Jong-min oppa and Detective Ahn? What if they tell K you’re here?” “I thought about that on our way here,” Kwang-soo responds thoughtfully. “I’m hoping everyone else will just assume that K knows where everyone is and is all right with me being here. I want this job more than anything, and I want to stay here for as long as I can.” “You haven’t figured out yet why K was adamant about you staying out of Korea?” Kwang-soo shakes his head. Min-young nods, feeling sorry for her friend. It did break her heart a little when she saw his condition in the Philippines a few months ago after she finally tracked him down. He’s stuck in a land where he doesn’t understand most of the people, has no friends, and doesn’t even have anyone to contact in Korea. She still trusts K to a degree, but he did lose a bit of her respect for doing that to Kwang-soo. “Did he tell you anything else about the assignment?” Min-young asks instead. “You tell me what they told you first, and then I’ll tell you what Mr. Kim told me.” Min-young shoots him a withering look. Almost one year has passed, and he’s still the same. “All the woman told me was Lee Soon-jae,” she says. “Lee Soon-jae?” “Yes, oppa,” Min-young says. “At first, I thought he was our client, but then she gave me Mr. Kim’s contact card and said he’s the one who’s hired me and will be paying me. She said I’ll know what the name is for when the rest of the team assembles.” “Ah.” “I thought at first that he may be someone we have to protect or something, but he doesn’t turn up in my search,” Min-young adds. “Do you know who he is, oppa? Did Mr. Kim mention?” “Well, I don’t know who he is,” Kwang-soo says, “but I was told that we have to look for him.” “So he’s a missing person.” “I think so.” Min-young frowns. “His child, you think? How old was Tae-hoon-ssi?” “Not that much older than me,” Kwang-soo says. “From our conversation, I’m thinking he’s a friend of his or maybe even a sibling.” “That would make sense,” Min-young thinks aloud. “Finding a missing person is hard without any clues. Detective Ahn might know some more information about him, too. He’s also going to be of great help to us because he knows people in the police force.” “He has resources.” “Right. And, Jong-min oppa’s not too bad at finding things, too.” “I don’t know if that applies to people,” Kwang-soo says. “People in general just confuse him.” Min-young chuckles. “We never know. He might be of help to us. He wouldn’t have been hired if not.” Kwang-soo says nothing, only watches Jae-wook with her as the detective orders his drink. “What about you, though, oppa?” Min-young jokes. “How can you be of help to us?” Kwang-soo stares at her in disbelief. At that, Min-young couldn’t help but laugh. “Min-youngah.” “I’m sorry, oppa.” “How can you—” Kwang-soo huffs. “Here I am really happy to see everyone, and then you’re doing this to me.” “I’m sorry.” Kwang-soo sighs. He glances at Jae-wook to see where he is, and despite his evident discontent over Min-young’s idea of a welcome back, he shares one more thing with her. He turns around to face the entrance of the store. “He says he hired me because I’m the only one who will not die,” he whispers to Min-young. The grin on Min-young’s lips dissipates. “What?” “Tae-hoon-ssi,” he tells her slightly louder. “I asked him why he hired me, and he said it’s because I’m the only one who won’t die once we find Lee Soon-jae-ssi.” Min-young frowns up at him. “Why would we die?” “Are you both ready?” Jae-wook asks as he joins them. “Yes, hyung,” Kwang-soo says, a deceptively bright smile on his face. He touches his stomach and says, “I’m actually really hungry. Dinner would be great.” Jae-wook eyes him searchingly, but Kwang-soo doesn’t buckle under it. “You can eat when we get to Myeong-dong,” Jae-wook says. “I’ve been away for too long,” Kwang-soo mutters to himself. “I missed Korean food.” “Do you want me to drive, hyung?” Jong-min asks Jae-wook as he joins them, a cup of iced Americano in hand. “Yeah, sure.” Jong-min follows suit as Jae-wook heads out. Kwang-soo, meanwhile, gestures for Min-young to go ahead of him. Min-young grabs her belongings, her mind now preoccupied with her conversation with Kwang-soo. Just be careful, Manila’ has told her.Somehow, the advice that she thought as cute not too long ago has become a sobering warning.
