10. ...a lazy kiss | post-canon, established relationship, a carriage ride to a ball

Jesper flicked the carriage door open, a phantom of a touch as his power did half the work.

They were getting better at channeling Jesper’s gift, even if that blessing did come in erratic flares and bursts. They were also late enough for the Radmakkers’ Ball, the midsummer sun now already brushing the horizon.

Clambering into the carriage first, Jesper held out a hand to help Wylan in.

“Your Excellency,” Jesper teased.

That was the style that came with Wylan’s title. Along with the Esteemed Wylan Van Eck and the Honorable Councilman Van Eck. If Wylan chose to marry, his partner would earn the style of the Illustrious. As it was, Jesper had no title – no matter how illustrious Wylan found him – and Jesper enjoyed teasing Wylan with his wealth of names.

“Your stupid face,” Wylan teased in return.

He shoved the hat on the carriage seat to the other side, squeezing in beside Jesper and closing the door behind him. It was a large carriage, the envy of Ketterdam, with glass windows shielded by ruby-red curtains and plush velvet seats. When it moved, the springs above its wheels made the trip feel a little smoother.

“You like this face,” Jesper shot back, unbothered.

“Just the lips,” Wylan grinned at the red rouge Jesper had put on.

The burgundy suit Jesper wore matched it, but the white mercher gloves he’d conceded to stood stark against them – and against Wylan’s skin as Jesper reached up to curl it behind Wylan’s neck. He let himself be pulled closer, until he could kiss Jesper again, lazy and lingering and longing.

“Just the lips?” Jesper challenged, voice dipped low. The carriage rattled as it turned a curve, pushing them closer still.

“It is excellent at doing – ” Wylan cut himself off as Jesper’s hand moved down to rest by Wylan’s waist, palm pressed just beneath his diaphragm where he might feel every stutter of his decorum fraying, “at doing things,” he lost his train of thought.

Jesper laughed.

His other hand reached down to take Wylan’s right hand, and he lifted it up to his lips to press a kiss over the back of it, the rouge staining Wylan’s own white gloves. All proper and taunting – propriety turned vice, the world unbuilt slipping into his open palm as Wylan felt himself fraying at his edges, undone but still unfinished.

The ghost of Jesper’s breath lingered even through the fabric, coming to rest over his knuckles: evening mist falling over the crags of sunset.

When Jesper pulled away, the red shape of his lips stayed on Wylan’s glove, a mark meant to scar the silk. Jesper could have easily Fabrikated the color away, but by the crooked glint in his eyes – a thief who’d just found the kruge – Wylan knew that Jesper would let it stay for the night, for the length of the ball.

Wylan felt his cheeks flush warm.

“Jes,” he huffed, but couldn’t stop his smile, heart finite for the length of a name.

“You want me to stop?” Jesper asked.

They had around five more minutes before they arrived at the Radmakker mansion, before they’d have to lose this to the crowds at the ball.

“Don’t you dare,” Wylan dragged Jesper back in by the lapel of his suit.

“If Your Excellency insists,” Jesper pressed a kiss beneath Wylan’s jaw, where flesh became pulse and pulse became want.

His own hands traced the dark shadow of the veins climbing up Jesper’s bare neck – a what if on the verge of becoming a what will. Uncurling, a bloom, an implosion: a promise of what he might do when the night was over, when it would just be the two of them again. When the night would fade into the morning and he could spend the sunrise lost in Jesper’s touch, in Jesper’s dreams. Half asleep, but always more than half his world.

“I’m not insisting,” he stole his own kiss from Jesper. Once a thief, always a thief, no matter how honest. “I’m only making a down payment.”

“Oh?” Jesper thumbed the kohl around the edge of Wylan’s eyes. “Payment for what services?”

Wylan grinned into another lingering kiss. “You’ll see,” he promised.

The night was still young, after all.

And so were they.

And so was the world.

"Look, obviously I'm really not used to not getting what I want, and I figured everything would just work out, you know? And then it didn't, and I felt pathetic for being stuck on you even though I just knew in my bones that you were it for me. Like, I could feel it. I could always feel it. So, to answer your earlier question, no, I am not over you. I love you so much that it kind of makes me want to vomit, actually. Like, bi-monthly."

He was vaguely aware that his mouth was open, his hands dangling uselessly at his sides as she approached, big blue eyes round and wide and pleading. 

"Right," he said slowly, his voice rough. He honestly wasn't quite sure what to do with her and her confession and her trembling lower lip and how she was looking at him. 

But he never knew what to do with her. And he liked that.

"Right?" 

He was suddenly aware of how close she was, how she was invading his personal space. She wasn't touching him, hadn't dared, but she was close enough that he could see where her mascara clumped and the freckles on her nose peeking through her makeup and the flecks of green in her eyes. He could feel the heat of her, and he suddenly wasn't sure he remembered how to breathe.

He was vaguely aware of one of the partygoers to his left setting their glass back down on his coffee table, could hear the rustle of people on cushions and feel their eyes fixed on them, and he felt a bit like he was pinned under a microscope.

"Right," he repeated. "Right."

also it’s possible that this happened partially because McCarthy told Matt Gaetz to “get a life” when a staffer turned down his romantic advances.

It just feels like a solid combination of Shawn's choice to face genuinely harrowing things with humor (Psych is a murder-comedy show! And that shouldn't work! But it does!) and the sort of defiantly-celebratory vibe just feels like it suits him.

Hii!! so 2024 is right around the corner, happy new year yayay. Actually, if I think too much about it I think I'll start crying cause like what do you mean we're less than 42 hours from staring a new year?!! 2023 doesn't feel real tbh time in general doesn't feel real but yeah anyways I'll save that convo for another time. I'm here today to reflect on all the gifsets I've made throughout this year, which let me add, has been A LOT. I'm going to start by sharing some fun stats (yes renee I'm copying you <33), and then I'll do a fun top 5 of my fave gifsets, and to finish it off I'd also like to use this to shout out some of my fave people and creators on this hellsite cause you all made my 2023 so much better and I love you all for that <333

fun statistics:

In total I made 61 gifsets in 2023

57 are heartstopper (not surprised)

3 are 911 lone star (mostly tarlos)

1 are dan and phil

In august I made 20 gifsets, which are the most gifsets I've made in a month this year

In may I made 1 gifset, which is the month I made less gifsets this year

top 5 gifsets from 2023 (in no particular order)

that one dnp gifset: I think most people know that I was and still am a big dan and phil fan, and that I spent most of my teenage years obsessing over them and giffing them and only them. Well, they went on hiatus and they stopped having a big impact on my life util they decided to come back and ruin my life again (in a good way). This gifset was the first time I giffed them since like idk 2019/2020, and it does mean a lot to me :') it's not really about the concept and the coloring, I chose this one to be apart of my top 5 for sentimental reasons, and I think that's valid.

give your friendships the magic you would give a romance: once again, sentimental reasons. when I read this quote on loveless it just spoke to me in so many levels. One of the things I love the most about heartstopper is the importance they give to friendship and I just had to make something that highlighted that and I think it turned out super good.

I think nellie loves him: well, now I think I snapped with this one akdhjahak I just love it so much. the coloring.. the heartstopper tv scenes with the heartstopper comic scenes, like chef's kiss, just perfect. of course this is not an original idea so I'd love to thank @rose-nobles for inspiring this gifset <33

mr. ajayi loves museum dates with his grumpy bf: and just like that we are back to sentimental reasons ahdhkas. well, this was one of the first gifsets I made when season two came out and it blew up. I've never had that many notes on a gifset, and honestly I think it's well deserved cause the coloring is good and I had finally just figured out how to sharpen gifs, so yeah love that for me.

I'm bi actually: I had so much fun making this one. the amount of bi coded elements and colors I included on this, I WAS ON A MISSION. the fact I made the font wobbly hsjgdjaka, I love love this gifset.

I have some questions about “dj white wolf” 💜

DJ WHITE WOLF MY BELOVED

This fic mostly came to be because I was riffing with Emma about weird add-ons that Shuri might have put in Bucky's vibranium arm and I joked about her adding a bluetooth speaker labeled "DJ White Wolf."

Mostly, the fic is about playlists/mixtapes as an extremely specific but very loud way of showing someone you care about them, but the "did Shuri put a speaker in the vibranium arm?" question does arise and is answered in a way that hopefully other people will find as funny as I do, so. Here's hoping I actually finish this one. ANYWAY. Here's a teeny excerpt:

Sam doesn’t fully understand the consequences of his fevered mixtape-making until after he and Bucky become roommates. 

He walks into their DC apartment to find Bucky doing the dishes and–there is no other word for it–rocking out to “Dancing in the Dark”, and he should be ready with some kind of teasing comment. He would be, if this were three months ago. Now, though, all he does is stand there and watch for a moment, helpless to the feeling of fondness that courses through his veins.

And then Bucky glances back at Sam and goes, “You stare any longer and I’m gonna have to charge you for the show.”

It’s what Sam needs to shake himself out of it. He raises an eyebrow at Bucky and says, “Just deciding the best way to describe this specific moment to Kamala the next time you two get into one of your New York versus Jersey arguments.”

Bucky levels an unimpressed look at Sam and starts playing “Empire State of Mind” instead.
