Anime i’ve Watched
That begin with a N (Part 2)!
Yep this is how i’m going to bring over all the anime and manga i’ve watched and posted about on the old blog. It’s not so detailed but it will have to do. Anything new I watch or read from this point on will have their own posts.
Net-juu no Susume  (Recovery of an MMO Junkie):
Genres: Game, Comedy, Romance, ONA
Tumblr media
Synopsis:  For the first time since graduating high school, 30-year-old Moriko Morioka is unemployed—and she couldn't be happier. Having quit her long-standing job of over 11 years, Moriko quickly turns to online games to pass her now-plentiful free time, reinventing herself as the handsome and dashing male hero "Hayashi" in the MMO Fruits de Mer. With the pesky societal obligations of the real world out of the way, she blissfully dives headfirst into the realm of the game, where she promptly meets the kind and adorable healer Lily. Befriending each other almost instantly, the two become inseparable just as Moriko herself becomes more and more engrossed in her new "life" as Hayashi. Eventually, Moriko adopts the reclusive lifestyle in its entirety, venturing out from the safety of her apartment only when absolutely necessary. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Moriko, a timid 28-year-old corporate worker named Yuuta Sakurai has also logged onto Fruits de Mer from the other side of town. Coincidentally bumping into each other at the convenience store one night, both write off their meeting as no more than just another awkward encounter with a stranger—however, fate has more in store for them than they think. My Rating: 8/10
Finished airing in 2017 with a total of 10 episodes
My Thoughts: The male lead wears glasses! In case that’s something anyone but me cares about... Aside from that I can’t remember much about this one which is never a sign of an amazing anime so it’s up to you friends! Will you watch it or leave it?!
Nijiiro Days:
Genres: Comedy, Romance, School, TV Short, Shoujo, Slice of Life
Tumblr media
Synopsis:  Nijiiro Days follows the colorful lives and romantic relationships of four high school boys—Natsuki Hashiba, a dreamer with delusions of love; Tomoya Matsunaga, a narcissistic playboy who has multiple girlfriends; Keiichi Katakura, a kinky sadist who always carries a whip; and Tsuyoshi Naoe, an otaku who has a cosplaying girlfriend. When his girlfriend unceremoniously dumps him on Christmas Eve, Natsuki breaks down in tears in the middle of the street and is offered tissues by a girl in a Santa Claus suit. He instantly falls in love with this girl, Anna Kobayakawa, who fortunately attends the same school as him. Natsuki's pursuit of Anna should have been simple and uneventful; however, much to his dismay, his nosy friends constantly meddle in his relationship, as they strive to succeed in their own endeavors of love. My Rating: 8/10
Finished airing in 2016 with a total of 24 episodes. Each episode running about 13 minutes in length.
My Thoughts: Love the manga, which I keep meaning to finish because it is a completed title... and I should probably finish it before manga gets even harder to find online with the way things are currently going...
Anywho, the anime! Pretty good. The episodes are about half that of a normal anime but you have a 24 episode count so it’s basically the same as having a 12 episodes run with the usual running time!  I’d watch it is you want more content after the manga, but keep in mind that the anime does not cover the entirety of the manga!
No Game No Life:
Genres: Game, Adventure, Comedy, Supernatural, Ecchi, Fantasy
Tumblr media
Synopsis:  No Game No Life is a surreal comedy that follows Sora and Shiro, shut-in NEET siblings and the online gamer duo behind the legendary username "Blank." They view the real world as just another lousy game; however, a strange e-mail challenging them to a chess match changes everything—the brother and sister are plunged into an otherworldly realm where they meet Tet, the God of Games. The mysterious god welcomes Sora and Shiro to Disboard, a world where all forms of conflict—from petty squabbles to the fate of whole countries—are settled not through war, but by way of high-stake games. This system works thanks to a fundamental rule wherein each party must wager something they deem to be of equal value to the other party's wager. In this strange land where the very idea of humanity is reduced to child's play, the indifferent genius gamer duo of Sora and Shiro have finally found a real reason to keep playing games: to unite the sixteen races of Disboard, defeat Tet, and become the gods of this new, gaming-is-everything world. Tumblr media
My Rating: 7/10
Finished airing in 2014 with a total of 12 episodes.
My Thoughts: I have a laundry list of things i’m meaning to watch, read or do. Watching the No Game No Life movie on Netflix is one of those things. Anyways! I recall this one being alright, nice art/ animation/ character design and an interesting premise but too short and underdeveloped. One of those animes that may have benefited greatly from a longer run or second season.
No.6:
Genres: Action, Sci-fi, Mystery, Drama
Tumblr media
Synopsis:  Many years ago, after the end of a bloody world war, mankind took shelter in six city-states that were peaceful and perfect... at least on the surface. However, Shion—an elite resident of the city-state No. 6—gained a new perspective on the world he lives in, thanks to a chance encounter with a mysterious boy, Nezumi. Nezumi turned out to be just one of many who lived in the desolate wasteland beyond the walls of the supposed utopia. But despite knowing that the other boy was a fugitive, Shion decided to take him in for the night and protect him, which resulted in drastic consequences: because of his actions, Shion and his mother lost their status as elites and were relocated elsewhere, and the darker side of the city began to make itself known. Now, a long time after their life-altering first meeting, Shion and Nezumi are finally brought together once again—the former elite and the boy on the run are about to embark on an adventure that will, in time, reveal the shattering secrets of No. 6. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
Tumblr media
My Rating: 8/10
Finished airing in 2011 with a total of 11 episodes.
My Thoughts: Just read the manga and watch this as extra, I can’t remember if the anime covered the entirety of the manga’s story but either way check out that source material first! The manga series is also completed which is a huge bonus. High point: The relationship between the two leads.
Noragami:
Genres: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Supernatural, Shounen
Tumblr media
Synopsis: In times of need, if you look in the right place, you just may see a strange telephone number scrawled in red. If you call this number, you will hear a young man introduce himself as the Yato God. Yato is a minor deity and a self-proclaimed "Delivery God," who dreams of having millions of worshippers. Without a single shrine dedicated to his name, however, his goals are far from being realized. He spends his days doing odd jobs for five yen apiece, until his weapon partner becomes fed up with her useless master and deserts him. Just as things seem to be looking grim for the god, his fortune changes when a middle school girl, Hiyori Iki, supposedly saves Yato from a car accident, taking the hit for him. Remarkably, she survives, but the event has caused her soul to become loose and hence able to leave her body. Hiyori demands that Yato return her to normal, but upon learning that he needs a new partner to do so, reluctantly agrees to help him find one. And with Hiyori's help, Yato's luck may finally be turning around.
Tumblr media
My Rating: 8/10
Finished airing in 2014 with a total of 12 episodes.
My Thoughts: Yes! Watch it! Love it! And also read it. Big downside: The updates for this manga are slow and the story is unfinished obviously. Upside: Two whole seasons of anime goodness, and if we’re really lucky we’ll eventually get another? Ok maybe not... but a girl can dream! Also this anime has one of my all time favourite opening themes! Amazing!
Noragami Aragoto:
Genres: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Supernatural, Shounen
Tumblr media
Synopsis:  Yato and Yukine have finally mended their relationship as god and Regalia, and everyone has returned to their daily life. Yato remains a minor and unknown deity who continues taking odd jobs for five yen apiece in the hopes of one day having millions of worshippers and his own grand shrine. Hiyori Iki has yet to have her loose soul fixed by Yato, but she enjoys life and prepares to attend high school nonetheless. Taking place immediately after the first season, Noragami Aragoto delves into the complicated past between Yato and the god of war Bishamon. The female god holds a mysterious grudge against Yato, which often results in violent clashes between them. It doesn't help that Bishamon's most trusted and beloved Regalia, Kazuma, appears to be indebted to Yato. When lives are on the line, unraveling these mysteries and others may be the only way to correct past mistakes. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
Tumblr media
My Rating: 9/10
Finished airing in 2015 with a total of 13 episodes.
My Thoughts: Another amazing opening theme! Seriously this series really knew how to pick them! Also have crushes on a solid chunk of the cast... so there’s that.

A Decade of Horror Recommendations
With 2020 approaching, we’re reaching the end of a decade that has been uncommonly good to the horror genre, especially the last few years. Here’s an overview of some of the stand-out titles and my recommendations. Feel free to ask me about any of the titles on this list and I’ll happily share my more in-depth thoughts on them!
Note that, of course, I have not seen every movie that’s come out in recent years, so I’ve probably missed some titles -- feel free to jump in with your own recommendations!
Also this post is really long and has gifs, so I’m putting it under a cut. Sorry for the dash spam, mobile fam. Tell Tumblr to fix their shit.
Tumblr media
2010: Supernatural Horror Starts Making a Comeback
Some stand-out films:
Insidious: An important film for modern horror history, helping to usher in the new wave of paranormal/hauntings/demon films. It lays the tropes for a lot of the films that would get big in upcoming years. I thought it was pretty solidly decent.
Devil: A clever script about being trapped on an elevator with the devil. It’s a bit too ambitious and doesn’t quite live up to those ambitions, but it’s solidly decent and refreshingly original. A hidden gem for the year.
Black Swan: Maybe the height of Darren Aronofsky’s career as a household name. Not my favorite of his movies, but a pretty solid psychological suspense.
Frozen: No, not that one. This is a clever movie that embraces a narrow scope: some teenagers get stuck on a ski lift and have to endure the elements and some hungry wolves below. Not a great movie, but worth watching as a study in what you can do with limited resources.
Black Death: Quick shout-out for a dark and grisly historical horror involving witchcraft and torture. It’s not a fun movie to watch, but it’s got Sean Bean and Eddie Redmayne, and I feel like both original screenplays and historical horrors are rare enough to warrant support.
2010 also had its share of predictable franchise tie-ins (a Saw movie, a Resident Evil movie, remakes like I Spit on Your Grave and The Crazies, etc.) The Horror Renaissance was a few years in coming.
Tumblr media
2011: The Year of the Predictable Remakes
So many franchises getting flogged to death this year -- tripe like SCRE4M, Final Destination 5, Human Centipede 2, a Hellraiser reboot literally no one watched, and Paranormal Activity 3. Blech. BUT. 2011 also brought us a couple of my favorite movies ever:
You’re Next: I would credit You’re Next with re-defining the “final girl” in horror. Also it’s a damn good home invasion movie with buckets of gore and a smart script.
Cabin in the Woods: This one’s a bit divisive -- some folks really hated it I guess -- but it’s such a loving deconstruction of horror, and it’s wholly original even while being comfortingly familiar. Also it’s hilarious.
Tumblr media
2012: A Few Important Titles
I feel like 2012 was full of movies nobody has actually ever seen or talked about. But some of the good ones that I’d recommend:
Sinister: Like Insidious in some ways, but maybe better.  Also, “Snakes don’t have feet.” Honestly just a very good, solid demon/haunted kid movie.
V/H/S: A must-watch for horror buffs. It didn’t invent the found footage genre, but it did refine it and really show off what it could do best.
Smiley: OK so like. This is not really a great film, but I think about it a lot and recommend it a lot. It’s stuck with me quite a bit somehow, and in some ways it feels very much ahead of its time as a creepy prediction of what internet culture would be like at the end of the decade. “We did it for the lulz.” Seriously, watch this movie today, and remember that it was made eight years ago, and see if it gives you chills too.
I guess I should also mention Prometheus here, which lots of people liked. I was not one of them, but it was a heavily talked-about film I feel like and of course an Alien franchise tie-in.
Tumblr media
2013: The Year the World Remembered It Liked Horror
This was a big turning point year, launching some new franchises instead of just re-treading old ones:
The Conjuring: I personally hate all of these movies, but they are huge and you can’t swing a dead cat in the modern horror fandom without encountering one of them. The first Conjuring film was at least decent. For extra credit, watch it as a triple feature with Insidious and Sinister and do a compare/contrast.
The Purge: Not only the start of a successful franchise but also a pop culture phenomenon and a damn good movie to boot.
Mama: I love this movie. I have this movie on DVD. It’s kind of bittersweet and may not completely follow through on all of its promises, but it’s still quite good and has some lovely performances.
Warm Bodies: Not really a horror -- kind of a romance -- but it warrants mention here because zombies were a hot item in 2013, and that’s a current special interest of mine on account of having a zombie book of my own coming out that is more than a little influenced by this story. (the film is a pretty good adaptation of the book, although honestly you could just skip the movie and read the book and get a better experience.)
Willow Creek: I feel like I recommend this movie a lot, but that’s just because I think it’s very good and a very smart use of its own resources. A found footage mockumentary that actually manages to make Bigfoot frightening. Totally worth the watch.
Mr. Jones: Here’s another hidden gem, also in found footage style (I feel like that was a prevailing theme in the years after V/H/S) but it’s surprisingly fresh. It’s a folk horror piece that doesn’t go at all where you might expect despite its thoroughly well-trodden ‘couple in secluded house’ setup.
A bucketful of remakes and sequels this year too, including an Evil Dead reboot, V/H/S sequel, Insidious sequel, etc.  I should also probably mention World War Z, which was not actually very good and also had nothing in common with the book of the same name, but does mark an important moment in the mainstreaming of the zombie revival, especially considering it came out the same year as Warm Bodies.
Tumblr media
2014: Fuck Yeah People Actually Like This Shit Let’s Make More
I feel like maybe our current horror renaissance started this year. Some recs:
The Babadook: No surprises to anyone who follows my blog, but I love The Babadook and I will defend it to the bitter end against its detractors. It is one of my favorite horror films of all time and one of the best of the decade.
It Follows: Ok confession, I actually did not like this movie at all. I thought it was ridiculous and over-hyped. But it makes the list because a lot of other people really, really loved it, and I accept that they saw something in it that I didn’t. Watch it and make up your own mind (and report back with your findings).
As Above, So Below: This may be the most claustrophobic film ever made, and it deserves to be studied on that merit alone. It’s also pretty creepy and I suspect a lot creepier for folks who are unnerved by Christian horror/mythology (I am not, but I know lots of folks really are).
Housebound: A hidden gem from New Zealand, this one is worth a watch because it takes a familiar haunted house premise and gives it a surprising and honestly delightful twist.
Jessabelle: Not a great movie, but deserving of a spot here because it’s a Southern Gothic and features a main character in a wheelchair, which I think is neat.
13 Sins: I feel like I’ve written about this movie for the blog before, and I recommend it a lot. But it’s clever and is a great early example of the “killing game” genre that has become increasingly prevalent (I mean, aside from the Battle Royale/Hunger Games version).
It was neat to see so many original horror stories (as opposed to reboots/franchises) coming out, and that’s a trend that would continue (and is something that makes horror one of my preferred genres - there are more original stories in it than in many other types of film).
Tumblr media
2015: Hell Yeah Let’s Ride This Horror Train
So many excellent movies this year! Ahh!
Crimson Peak: Guillermo del Toro’s love letter to the Gothic. What I love about this movie (aside from Tom Hiddleston) is it plays all the tropes straight. It’s not trying to be a new spin or reinvent the genre or break all the tropes. It’s just a gothic horror story, told exactly like what it is, by a guy who makes damn good movies. I felt like that was really brave and surprising at the time.
The Visit: M. Night Shyamalan had basically made a joke of himself after a string of awful movies, but this movie was enough to earn back a bit of respect in my book. It’s a clever premise and a smart use of found footage.
The VVitch: Creepy-ass slow-burn supernatural historical horror, sign me up. I actually don’t like this movie as much as a lot of people (see above: religious-themed horror doesn’t push my fear buttons much) but it’s beautifully made, thoughtful, and artistic in a way that makes people sit up and pay attention to just how good the horror genre can be.
Krampus: This movie is extremely silly and I love it. A holiday favorite I watch every year now. It’s hilarious, and imaginative, with some really creepy visuals and a thoroughly satisfying conclusion.
The Invitation: For me, some of my favorite horror movies are the ones where the film is uncomfortable to watch before the actual horror stuff starts up. This one has an almost unbearably tense build-up and pays off in an incredibly satisfying and creepy manner.
Tumblr media
2016: Horror Goes Hella Mainstream
I feel like 2016 was another year of just...lots of kind of fun unique premises tossed out like spaghetti to see what would stick. And I am here for it.
Don’t Breathe: Home invasion gone wrong is a great trope, and this one gets extra points for having the single most disturbing sequence utilizing a turkey baster I’ve ever seen in film.
Hush: Speaking of home invasions. This one is pretty standard fare -- homeowner fights back! -- but the deaf main character is a neat twist.
Lights Out: It’s pretty cheesy at times and the plot sort of falls in on itself, but the opening sequence is genuinely frightening and the movie almost literally killed @comicreliefmorlock so that’s a commendation I guess?
Train to Busan: An Asian take on the zombie survival story. It’s a really good movie (if horribly bleak) and it does such an excellent job of making you genuinely care for all of the characters.
The Autopsy of Jane Doe: A really neat premise with some wonderful slow-build horror. The storyline kind of goes off the rails, and it asks a lot of questions it doesn’t answer, but it’s quite good regardless.
The Forest: I was disappointed with this one -- it just failed to live up to my expectations -- but it’s decent, and it’s a good attempt at capturing the creepiness of Japan’s Suicide Forest.
Before I Wake: This one was sad more than scary, I thought, but it fits so neatly into a certain aesthetic that I am always a sucker for -- dreams and nightmares bleeding into reality, yes please.
Split: Say what you will, I thought Split was amazing, and James McAvoy deserves a goddamn Oscar for his performance in this movie.
The Monster: A hidden gem that’s worth watching to see how well it delivers on its premise: two characters stuck in a car with a monster outside. It’s not amazing, but it’s neat, and sometimes it’s nice to have just a straightforward creature feature with a bit of emotional heft for good measure.
Tumblr media
2017: Did Somebody Say Blockbuster?
In hindsight, they’ll probably say 2017 was the start of the horror renaissance, but we’ll all know they’re a few years too late. Still, this was another great year:
Get Out: Funny, dark, deeply uncomfortable and with some real meat to it -- Jordan Peele knows how to make a great movie. This absolutely deserves all the awards.
It: Not a perfect movie, but a good adaptation of a difficult-to-adapt book. The kids are great. Pennywise is menacing, but that fucking flute lady is the scariest part.
It Comes At Night: I didn’t like this one much, but a lot of folks did so it makes the list. See above re: It Follows.
Gerald’s Game: Everything that’s wrong with this movie (ie, the ending) is wrong in the original story, so where this movie fails it’s a matter of sticking too close to its source material. But the premise is truly, genuinely horrifying, and the degloving scene almost made me vomit. So that’s cool.
Happy Death Day: Another horror-comedy, with a healthy dose of self-awareness. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, and that’s what allows it to be fun.
The Babysitter: This movie is hilarious. It’s also super bloody and clever and clearly made by people who love slashers, and the affection shows.
The Ritual: So-so in the acting and pacing, but the creature design is A+ and the concept is really neat. Seriously just watch this one for the monster, it’s super cool looking.
I should probably mention Mother here, but I can’t speak for it as I haven’t gotten around to watching it yet. It’s a very divisive film. One of these days I’ll watch it and let you know.
Tumblr media
2018: There’s More Where That Came From
If 2016 was the year of filmmakers just trying stuff for the hell of it, 2018 was the year of talented filmmakers and studios realizing that, oh shit, you can make really good horror movies with mass appeal.
A Quiet Place: I’m glad I caught this one in theaters, because it really deserves to be watched in a dark, quiet room where no one dares to make a sound. The ending left a lot to be desired, but it was a clever premise.
Hereditary: The best horror movie of the year imo. Painfully uncomfortable - I’m not sure I could watch it again - but highly recommended.
Apostle: Watch this one in a triple-feature with The VVitch and Hereditary. A really good period piece with a character you actually want to root for.
Bird Box: I didn’t like this movie much, but it was hugely popular. I bought the book recently and suspect it is much better. Still, it’s worth a mention for its impact on mainstream viewers (lots of people who don’t like horror really liked this movie). I won’t budge from my initial opinion that it’s just A Quiet Place meets The Happening, though.
Tumblr media
What Does 2019 Hold?
We’re only halfway through the year, so we’ve got some time to see what is coming down the pipe. Lots of things to look forward to! But some solid titles so far this year that I’d heartily recommend:
Us: Jordan Peele is at it again. It may not be as good as Get Out  -- there’s some plot holes where the internal logic of the world is at odds with the message it’s trying to send -- but it’s thoughtful and gives plenty to chew on. And there are places where it’s just unbearably tense and creepy.
Brightburn: I had high hopes for this movie and was not disappointed. This is a super (ha, ha) good film.
The Wind: A Gothic on the American frontier. It accomplishes what I think It Comes At Night was supposed to do, but more effectively (for me anyway). Bonus points for being written and directed by women. Double bonus: Caitlin Gerard, the main actress, is also the lead character in Smiley.
I have not yet watched Velvet Buzzsaw, Ma or Midsommar this year, but I really want to. I’m also looking forward to the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark film despite having some reservations about the whole concept.

The support is top notch and I would definitely recommend this template and this author. – fonic8
I am a professional designer. I used to use themes for clients, but none ever had what I wanted, so I started to create my own from scratch. However, I have a personal blog site that I run, and I wanted a magazine theme that would fit my needs.
Let me make this clear. I HAVE DOWNLOADED OVER 100 THEMES from theme forest. Each come with it’s own complications.
This theme is BY FAR, the easiest to implement, and the best looking. It’s SIMPLE to make changes to it (php, css knowledge of course), and it’s a great, great, great SOLID theme.
I can’t tell you how many times I have run across themes with such complicated php that you can’t do ANYTHING with it. THIS THEME IS NOT THAT CASE.
Out of the box, it just WORKS. If you are looking for a theme that works out of the box, OR one that you can customize, THIS THEME IS IT.
I cannot stress enough how happy I am with this purchase. NICE JOB. – tuskmaster

and to me, all this discourse just goes back to the initial reactions to reputation, assigning different songs to different exes, the irony in the prologue being she is writing about her current boyfriend but ppl won’t believe what they don’t see. and now adding another point for fans 1) who hate joe 2) who ship her with others 3) who just want to be proven right. for that, the context of the album (its themes and meaning) is largely ignored and taylor painted as lying about something. (2)
and nothing is solid confirmation in how the producer worded things, so it comes down to whats more convincing, but there are ppl who’ve just jumped to the conclusion its actual proven fact, taylor had been lying. ofc maybe taylor was writing a few things or concepts in 2015; but what was said then was clear she wasn’t writing actively, planning out an entire album, after interviews following tour then into 2016, which would normally be the time period she’d start actively working. (3)
to go back to song written during a time before with no solid album concept and of time building up to her biggest struggle in an album of letting go of that struggle; idk that it really likely? like eg, better man was a song scrapped years ago, but for that reason, it was given to someone else, separate from her own body of work. SIG if its of a past inspiration doesn’t align with the concurrent feelings she has of that said past expressed in other songs of the album. (4)
i mean everyone interprets songs differently, but this discourse seems not that, but another of “proving how right i am”. ofc this is also my own subjective opinions, so i might be coming off as hypocritical too. +i didn’t mean to write this up this long. and this is no way @your blog, i love the discussions here but just in general at how the fandom reacts to certain thing (5)
---
i didn’t get part 1, sorry!
but i’ve been seeing a lot of discourse lately about how the fandom can’t seem to ever take taylor at her word. and i think it’s because
1. taylor used to make it a fun game to see past the surface (easter eggs, liner notes, her self-mythology), and she fostered it when she was really active on tumblr, and it’s become an uncontrollable monster perpetuated by fans who don’t know any better.
2. the kaylor fandom is pretty pervasive and they have their own opinions on how taylor can be ‘dishonest’ or lie about her own songs for the sake of a narrative.
3. the media/general public has a perception that taylor is basically a marketing ploy in human form, and she’s never honest as a virtue of being a product.
...and it kind of clarifies for me why taylor isn’t on here or doing interviews anymore. it must not be fun at all anymore.

OK, list of positive events in the Reylo Fandom...(in chronological order)
So we’ve been through a lot of bad shit. We’ve had some major divisions, too. And just imaging all of the friends many of us old cane-wielders have lost along the way genuinely makes me very depressed and I hope somehow things change some day...
So frankly I’m done reading that sad shit- let’s get started with the good!!
1. Those first two weeks after the film came out and people, still on their main blogs, started posting voraciously about TFA and started tentatively asking each other about a possible Kylo and Rey dynamic only to discover it wasn’t just them- others felt it, too.
2. The discussion in the tiny fandom over what to call the ship. There were multiple candidates, some simple, some other mishmashes of words, but eventually posts began to emerge saying “Well it’s settled then- Reylo it is.” Yep, the ship name was decided on Tumblr. And actually at the time I remember posting saying I preferred one of the other candidates (can’t remember what it is now, though- maybe kyrey?), but it wasn’t long until #Reylo became the main name and tag for the ship and, hey, you can’t fight progress.
3. The first amazing fan art started to appear! Many of our very first artists are still with us! I remember the first original piece of fan art I ever saw for this ship came from @solarfugue(arriku) and I was instantly in love.
4. Fics were steadily being written! Through everyone’s early stories, certain patterns began to emerge- ‘force bonds’ being the primary one. These would be things that would be included in nearly every single fic as a prerequisite after February 2016.
5. Just around the very, very end of 2015, the dedicated side blogs began to emerge and the fandom began to really solidify.
6. The first big exchange (to my knowledge) was the Valentine’s Day fic exchange Feb. 2016! Tons of people got in on it, and it started rumblings for possibly more writing projects.
7. SMUT WEEK was the last few days of february going into March 2016. Basically, after a stream of people happily chatting and giggling along here on tumblr, a whoooole lotta risqué art emerged at once, and as a consequence, I declared the second or third day of this trend to be Smut Week. Everyone really grasped onto the idea with both hands and the smutty art, and even stories, POURED in for 5 solid days more. There’s not been much of a need to call another smut week, because, well, we never actually dropped back down to any innocent level since. So, anyone who’s ever tried to avoid smut in fics in this fandom, it’s my fault. I’m sorry (sort of). ^^;
8. Art Fridays! For awhile in spring, going into early summer 2016, Art Fridays, organized amongst some of the artists in the fandom, became a thing to look forward to. There’d be a secret theme and on Fridays around 8pm or so, suddenly tons of new art would emerge. It was something I always looked forward to. Later the concept morphed into ‘Shenanigans’ and is held sometimes on days other than Friday.
9. Art Fridays eventually morphed into the Reylo Anthology, a collection of artists who would still occasionally do art fridays stuff, but also worked to focus more on big themed reylo art projects.
10. The Reylo Fanfic Anthology was a concept tossed around quite a bit during Spring 2016 before being taken up by a group of writers and is still going strong to this day. There’s one large project a year, dotted with side events often centered on holidays.
11. The Reylo Sin Anthology came to be! A fanfic anthology for all the smuttiest smut fics, written to various themes throughout the year- many of them very much on the risqué side which is how they liked it. (It later became the Reylo Book of Sins and still going strong.)
12. From Spring to Summer 2016, due to new revelations from cast and crew, the fandom contracted a bit, but ultimately became more concentrated and ‘regulars’ began to emerge. Summer was also about the time that ‘metas’ pretty much got exhausted (everything had pretty much been hashed out by then), so it got a little quiet...
13. In October the Reylo Short Story Collection was announced. Focusing on, obviously, short stories, the goal was to write within the word-count limits and then publish with each story having its own custom art. A new issue is published every four months.
14. In November, two of our own, @starwarsnonsense and @bastila-bae, began an analytical podcast, “Scavenger’s Hoard”, about the new films and also with the goal of being reylo-friendly in an increasingly aggressive fandom. They added women’s voices to the discussion and have since even won awards!
15. We lost Carrie in the winter of 2016, so that was pretty terrible. But just before that happened, we were abuzz knowing a title for 9 was coming, and also anxious for the latest new years’ fic exchange hosted by the fic anthology, something that a lot of us held onto as a positive distraction in the wake of tragedy.
16. Starting around the turn of the year, changes started to take place on the SW website, namely the Data Bank, and other places- talk of ‘intertwined destines’ and ‘fascination’ and ‘links’ with regards to Kylo and Rey...could it be? Did we finally have more reason to hope?
17. In January 2017, we got the title for 8!! “Space Bear” became “The Last Jedi”, and suddenly the meta writing was back in full swing!
18. In April 2017, we got the trailer for 8! And boy did we get our hope alright. Quickly we realized many of our ‘standards’ in fanfiction seemed to have fairly correct between the trailer and cast/production commentary at SWC: Luke the underwhelming teacher, Kylo suddenly maskless and with a much reduced scar than we ever anticipated...*cough* causing us to speculate even more strongly about his anti-hero role and desire to reach Rey. The new clues and speculation quickly began to filter into fic writing.
....and here we are today! Did I miss anything? This was sort of a greatest hits in the fandom. ^^; If I missed anything, let me know! It’s getting late and I’m a bit out of it, so forgive me if I have...gosh so much has happened!! We’ve done so much!! And I’m so proud to have been with all you guys, old and new, through it all. :,)

Further digging deeper
Further digging deeper:
Tumblr media
Task 1: Select Select an artwork/installation/film/sculpture/book/article/soundtrack/object/thing
I decided to do a further digging deeper to discover new materials that I could possibly use to make my plaster heads more interesting.
Task 2: Respond Write a 200-word response to the work. This does not have to be written in an academic style. Make it personal; think about how the work made you feel or what it reminded you of instead of what it looks like.
I really like the plaster head sculptures; the process was timely but easy to do. However, they’re just hollow plaster heads ready to be sealed and possibly planted. I wish to make these heads more interesting whether I dig deeper into the materials that I could use and the purpose that these materials could have and the impact they share. The heads remind me of the busts that you’d see in an old fashion home – apart of the décor, possible mounted onto a wall or displayed on a fireplace. It would be interesting whether I can see inside the plant heads? Maybe a transparent material? Or to use a transparent material that could be mixed with items or plaster – or possibly layered with plaster?
Task 3: Research Research is more than finding out about the artist that made the work or how it was made. We want you to use these artworks as starting off points. We want you to dig deeper. Be curious!  3:1 Start by identifying key themes of the artworks. Make a list.
Plaster sculpture, Head, Plaster, Person’s head, bust, Material, Texture, Colour, Shape 3:2 Try some word association from the keywords.
Material – Plaster, Plastic, Acrylic, Polymer, Concrete, Resin, 3D Print, Vinyl, Fibre Glass, Silicone, Rubber, Latex, 3:3 You can now use these keywords to search in the library as well as various online sites.   You can start by using websites such as… • bbc.co.uk • theguardian.com   • moussemagazine.it • frieze.com   • tate.org.uk   • e-flux.com   • itsnicethat.com   What other sites can you dig in? Find your own resources relevant to your practice
I made my first search on tate.org.uk and found an artist, John Davies who used Polyester Resin with fiberglass to create a head sculpture. The sculpture is based on a life cast made of William Jeffrey’s head in 1972. A series of heads resulted from this cast, of which five were completed, all entitled ‘William Jeffrey with Device’. T01578 was the third in the series and had perhaps the most complex of the devices used. The ‘devices’ on the other four are: one, chicken wire, stretched over a wire frame, over a horn shape which covered the nose, forehead, and mouth but which left the eyes visible; two, a horn-like form from between the eyes covering the nose and part of the mouth, with feathers around the outer rim of the form; three, two pieces of dowelling, one resting horizontally on the bridge of the nose, the other parallel to this on the tip of the nose; both were fixed by wire around the ears, and the eyes look out in the space between the dowelling; four, a hat made of felt and coated with oil paint, a painted leaf-like structure over the nose with pieces cut out so that the eyes are visible. The artwork relates to mine so far as I started off with creating a series of heads to which I can experiment with. It will be interesting how I can use resin to create some works that could create an illusion of something or to layer up to create a mixed media head sculpture – possibly mixing found items into the resin.
I then started to search more into resin, but I couldn’t find many works that were relevant to mine so I just type ‘resin head casts’ into google. I found an artist called Richard Dupont who created a series of head casts that were filled with salvaged items and cast with resin. http://www.richarddupont.com/sculptures/resin-heads/featured-works#6
Tumblr media
This gave me an idea that I can use found objects that are relevant to my idea suffocation and possibly put them into the resin as I pour it into my mould.
I then searched ‘Concrete’ into Tate.org.uk and found work by Henry Moore. https://www.tate.org.uk/art/research-publications/henry-moore/judith-collins-henry-moore-and-concrete-cast-carved-coloured-and-reinforced-r1172059 Henry Moore made in total twenty-one sculptures in concrete, all between the years 1926 and 1934. This was a period of experimentation and rapid development in his career in which he explored this new medium alongside stone and wood. As he later commented, he was then very interested in all types of sculptural media and took up concrete in part because it was becoming a more commonly used building material and he was hopeful of being commissioned to produce concrete sculptures to go with these new buildings. Perhaps equally important was its cheapness (he had little money then) and the different ways in which it could be worked: concrete could be cast in a mould, shaped and added to while soft, or carved when hard. It could also be colored by pigments and incorporate other objects. Carving was his preferred mode of making sculptures during the 1920s and 1930s: famously espousing the doctrine of truth to materials, he publicly championed the view that a sculptor should carve word or stone directly in order to be able to respond to its properties rather than attempt to disguise them. But the story of Moore’s engagement with concrete shows him also alive to the possibilities of a material that could be modeled, carved and cast, and creates a more nuanced understanding of his approach to material and technique in the interwar years.

3:4 Can you expand your research to find links that address… • What you think the artist would have researched when making their artwork?
Artists would have researched how the materials would work; how the materials respond when being mixed with other materials and the durability and whether the materials are versatile. Artists would have researched how other artists may have used these materials or artists who have created something similar.
• How the artwork relates to current news events? Artist Henry Moore relates to an artist Stefano Boeri ‘Forest cities’. Henry created concrete sculptures as a commission to go with some buildings. However, Stefano used concrete buildings to house people and a forest of plants to create a self-sustainable town. https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/gardening-blog/2013/feb/27/bosco-verticale-vertical-gardening
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Richard Dupont created a collection of resin heads. One of his resin head creations ‘Pink Head, 2011 made with solid cast UV stable polyurethane resin with studio and personal detritus, found and salvage, recycled objects, and waste’ reminded me of a news article I found on The Guardian. It talks about how if we reuse/recycle materials, we could possibly create 200,000 jobs. To see Richard is using found, recycled and other types of materials in his resin heads is a way of using less resin (saving him a lot of money) and a way to create colourful art with a strong meaning.
https://www.theguardian.com/business/2015/jan/20/reusing-recycling-waste-materials-creates-jobs
• How the artwork relates to history? “Mould making is a 6000-year old skill. That means that our prehistoric ancestors were working in the same technique that we can pass on to our children and grandchildren.” “Archaeologists have also unearthed stone moulds used for making axes from about 3000 BC. They were probably made from an identical two-piece mould tied together with a rope, with a hole on top through which the liquid metal would have been poured. Many early weapons were fabricated through casting, making this technique key to the success of the hunting and gathering lifestyle of early humans. This shows the effect that fabrication techniques have on all aspects of life.” https://smartartbox.com/blogs/smart-art-blog/history-of-mold-making-and-casting

• Can you find any books in the library that relate to your keywords? “This is an informative, inspirational, and highly illustrated introduction to the design potential of concrete and its vital role in contemporary architecture. It mixes key issues such as design, aesthetics, and sustainability, with useful technical content such as how to set out the design of a concrete structure, guides to the basic principles (column sizes, slab thicknesses, and types) and how to achieve many different concrete finishes. Accessibly written: this book will appeal to both students and junior practicing architects, and function as a handy guide for more senior architects too.”

Rachel Whiteread is one of Britain's most exciting contemporary artists. Her work is characterised by its use of industrial materials such as plaster, concrete, resin, rubber, and metal. With these she casts the surfaces and volume in and around everyday objects and architectural space, creating evocative sculptures that range from the intimate to the monumental.

3:5 Identify the connections between the expanded research and the original artwork.  Can you summarise and reflect upon the expanded research and how it relates to your initial artwork? Think about the connections between the various links - can this provide an alternative way of thinking about your project/concept/idea… How do you relate this to the work that you are making? How can this expanded research develop your own practice?
After doing my research, I’m particularly interested in resin. Resin seems to be the most exciting material to work with and will allow me to do many things with it. However, it’s very expensive and has many health and safety guidelines. Richard Dupont resin head collection has given me an idea for my project to help develop my head casts. The concrete works haven’t really interested me to the level that I would like to use concrete in my own practices, but maybe in the future, I could use concrete to create some interesting creations. I also feel that using concrete will have many implements for my work and cause problems.

Craftsmanship: the best of British Arts and Crafts
Tumblr media
Craftsmanship is undeniably an art that deserves to be praised and preserved. In the UK you can find a couple of fine examples of the best of British arts and crafts featuring techniques that have been preserved throughout the ages. Today we’re taking a deeper look at some of the best craftsmen (and women) that have taken the best British craftsmanship and obtained some amazing results.
Alison Lowry
One of the best European master artisans dedicated to glass sculpture, Alison Lowry is a glass artist from Northern Ireland who specializes in the ancient glass casting technique of pâte de verre. Originally from a textile background, Alison started working with glass and fell in love with it as an expressive yet challenging material.
Amanda Simmons
Amanda Simmons is one of the best European glasswork master artisans. She is based in Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland. She undertook studies in glass and architecture at Central St Martins School of Art in London and set up her studio near Castle Douglas in 2006.
Currently, her work is influenced by research at Lyth Arts Centre in Caithness with scientists based at the Environmental Research Institute in Thurso.
David Collins Studio
David Collins Studio is an award-winning interior architecture atelier which creates creative and inspirational designs, residential and retail projects worldwide. Established in 1985, The Studio collaborates with luxury brands and businesses which represent the best in their field, and with private clients that share its fascination with detail, craft and refinement. Due to this extensive portfolio, this is a globally renowned brand viewed as an expert in contemporary luxury design.
Based in London, The Studio organized projects across five continents, including The Wolseley, The Connaught Bar and Harrods Shoe Heaven in London, Gleneagles in Scotland, The Ritz-Carlton Residences at MahaNakhon in Bangkok, and The Delaire Graff Estate in South Africa.
Eleanor Lakelin
Eleanor Lakelin, currently considered as one of the best European master artisans, is a London based artist dedicated to wood sculpture. She has a deep understanding and love for natural materials which in turn has transformed her artistic life.
For example in her “Echoes of Amphora Series” (2018) she created vessels from horse chestnut burr, hand turned, sandblasted and bleached. In “Void Vessel” (2015) the piece was entirely made with Horse Chestnut Burr and in “Ferrous Shift” she used sequoia wood.
She loves wood, its history and origin and the fact that it is a living material. She has spent many years perfecting form and experimenting with how the properties of wood can be used to express the rhythm of time and our relationship with the earth.
Eleanor exhibits a lot of her precious art pieces internationally and her artworks won many awards and commendations. Her wood sculptures are present in numerous prestigious collections worldwide.
Max Lamb
Max Lamb was born in 1980 and he combines traditional and ancient craftsmanship techniques with digital design. He is known for using highly uncommon approaches to natural materials, including pouring pewter onto sand, and volcanic rock. He is also known for his energetic and long-lasting methods of production.
Lamb attended Amersham & Wycombe College for art and design in 2000 where he received several awards. He also received a City and Guilds Photography Certificate in 2000. He later attended Northumbria University, receiving a degree in Three Dimensional Design. In 2006 he achieved his master’s degree in design products from the Royal College of Art. A year later he started teaching Industrial Design at Ecole Cantonale d’Art de Lausanne in Switzerland, and later also taught at the Royal College of Art.
A good example of the best of Max Lamb’s work is his “Cleft Chair” (2016). This is a branch, of his Urushi Stool (092) made with the same technique of cleaving a freshly cut log in its ‘green’ state using a traditional froe.
Lee Broom
Lee Broom is one of the UK’s foremost product designers and a premium global design brand. With his highly innovative luxury furniture and lighting designs, his work is celebrated and retailed across the globe.
Since 2007, when his company was born, he created over 100 furniture, accessory and lighting pieces, all of which are designed, manufactured and retailed under the Lee Broom brand. He also collaborated with several other top global brands including Christian Louboutin, Mulberry, Bergdorf Goodman and Wedgwood.
Taking inspiration from his background in fashion design, Lee tries to embrace and explore new themes while keeping his predominant and unique style. Using the highest quality materials, combined with the latest technology, Lee Broom constantly evolves and innovates, resulting in his signature, a mix of classicism and modernity.
Lee Broom’s wonderful designs can be seen in hotels, restaurants and homes across the world as well as on magazine covers and in newspapers internationally. His masterpieces are both unique yet familiar as he uses classic styles and reinterprets them in original and contemporary ways with an unexpected edge.
Some good examples of Lee Broom’s legacy are the Mini Crescent Chandelier” (made with opaque spherical mini pendant light with crescent-shaped brushed brass fascia) and the “Hanging Hoop Chair” (made with the combination of two brass plated steel circular hoops with a seat and backrest upholstered in Kvadrat wool).
One of the most beautiful accomplishments is the “Time Machine” grandfather clock which was Hand-crafted from Carrara marble with the same basis as a traditional engineered clock mechanism with a solid brass pendulum, weight and hands.
“Optical Light” is also another of his highlights made from powdered coated spun steel and blown from opaque glass, the asymmetry of the black stripes are in contrast to the classic spherical shape of the globe. Fun fact: When viewed from all sides, Optical’s linear pattern changes at every angle.
Jim Partridge and Liz Walmsley
Jim Partridge and Liz Walmsley are internationally considered as two of the best British artists sculpting in wood. They use organic materials, such as oak wood, and give them a solid, dramatic aesthetic and an authentic beauty with woodworking techniques. They are two of the finalists in the 2019’s Loewe Craft Prize.
In here our highlight goes to  “Curved Block Seat” which is made of oak and carved from solid blocks of oak. Partridge and Walmsley are committed to revealing the inherent beauty of their materials their craftsmanship is in service to the materials with which they work. This honesty of approach is shown in this work’s compelling scale and simplicity of form.
Laura Hart
Suffolk’s glass artist Laura Hart, one of the best master artisans in Europe, brings to life fine glass sculptures and functional glass tableware from her studio in rural Cavendish. She specializes in fused and kiln formed glass orchids, glass wildflowers and meticulously detailed fused and cast glass butterflies. Laura’s work brings several traditional glass making techniques together with the addition of sterling silver for anatomical detail. She focuses on fused glass production uniting 21st-century 3D design applications with ancient glassmaking techniques.
Her beautiful “Orchid Mirror” was featured in the Financial Times, ‘How to Spend it Magazine’. In this unique piece, there are three appaloosa phalaenopsis orchids set on a delicate metallic stem circling this large round mirror. This ends up making it become a beautiful looking glass by day and an ambient lighting piece by night.
James Devereux
The glassworker James Devereux, currently one of the best master artisans in Europe, started to train in glass sculpture at the age of 15. Through this, he discovered a natural talent for this craft, specializing in working with hot glass, creating solid forms as well as blown pieces.
In 2008, James opened his first studio in the Wiltshire countryside. He became a glass technician at the Royal College of Art in London in 2009, a position that he held until 2013. After leaving London in the same year, he started a studio with Katherine Huskie in the British countryside. James’s mastery of numerous skills and his high technical level contributed to the creation of unique and innovative works. His latest collection of Clovis works can be viewed at Vessel Gallery London.

31 for 31: Gore Horror Reviews – Part 1
Tumblr media
Note: This series was never completed due to personal issues.
31 for 31 (not to be confused with ESPN’s 30 for 30 movie series, which I totally didn’t rip off) is a series of articles where I cover a different horror movie for each day in October. A few years back I tried something similar to this feature where I attempted to watch and review a movie every day throughout the month of October. That idea quickly ran out steam as I couldn’t keep up with the task, so this year I’ve decided to try something a little different. This time around, I’m still planning on covering 31 different movies, but it will be broken down into four parts that will go up about once a week throughout the month.
I’m also not trying to break down each of these movies or write in-depth reviews. Instead this is just going to be a more laid back series of articles. I’ll still give you my final score for each movie (because people love scores), but think of this more like a blog. So with all that out of the way, hopefully I can help guide you towards something worth watching during my favorite time of the year.
Tumblr media
-1-  The Conjuring
2013 | R | 1h 52m
Based on one of the real-life cases of famed paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, The Conjuring tells the story of a Rhode Island family that is being tormented by what appears to be a demonic force. I’m normally not a fan of possession/exorcism movies (I think The Exorcist is one of the most overrated movies ever made), but when I watched The Conjuring back in 2013 I loved it. I have to say, after watching it again for this article, it definitely holds up. Even though I’d already seen it and was watching it in the middle of the day there were still parts that creeped me out and had me on edge. It’s the perfect combination of psychological and jump scares and also features some pretty decent acting. It’s honestly one of the best horror films I’ve seen in the last decade and I think everyone should watch it.
Score: 5 out of 5
Tumblr media
-2-  The Conjuring 2
2016 | R | 2h 14m
The Conjuring 2 takes things across the pond to England where another family is being tormented by a demonic force and is based on the real-life Enfield haunting. The first half of the movie is about on par with its predecessor, as it creates a palpable tension and is genuinely frightening. Unfortunately, as the film progresses it starts to go a bit off the rails. Most of the scare tactics were used up in the beginning, so repeated scares had little affect. I mean, you can only be scared by something suddenly appearing on screen accompanied by a loud noise so many times before it gets played out. There were also times where the film just felt downright campy, which I normally don’t mind, but it felt out of place in this particular movie. All that said, The Conjuring 2 still tells an interesting story and is better than most other horror films from recent years. It’s good and deserves a watch, but It does fall short of living up to the original.
Score: 4 out of 5
Tumblr media
-3-  Don’t Breathe
2016 | R | 1h 28m
Three thieves, each with their own motives, decide to break into the home of a blind veteran in hopes of nabbing an easy $300,000. That’s the simple premise behind Don’t Breathe, but when the blind man turns the tables on the would-be thieves and they end up trapped in his home, simplicity goes out the window. I wouldn’t say it’s a groundbreaking moment for the genre, but with a few twists and a lot of tension, Don’t Breathe is a damn solid film and one I’d highly recommend checking out.
Score: 4 out of 5
Tumblr media
-4-  Ghostbusters
2016 | PG-13 | 2h 14m
The original Ghostbusters is one of my favorite movies, but unlike many other “fans” I was actually looking forward to the Ghostbusters reboot from last year. Unfortunately, all the whiny little internet trolls got their wish and said reboot turned out to be pretty bad. The pacing is atrocious and the writing is even worse. I have zero problems with the cast. In fact I like each member of the Ghostbusters team quite a bit. It’s just a shame that the writing is so terrible that none of them could actually shine. I did feel that, if written properly, these characters could have been the perfect collection of new Ghostbusters. There were some small glimmers of hope like the variety of new weapons and gadgets at the busters’ disposal, as well as the talented cast, that I know a possible sequel could be great. I guess we will have to see if it ever manifests though. Until then, I think it’s best to just forget this particular entry even exists.
Score: 1 out of 5
Tumblr media
-5-  It Follows
2014 | R | 1h 47m
Until I watched It Follows, it seemed like a film that people either loved or hated. I guess I bucked that trend because I fell somewhere in the middle and thought it was just okay. The premise is basically that characters are pursued by some sort of supernatural entity and the only way to free themselves from its pursuit it to pass it on to someone else through sexual intercourse. There were some genuinely creepy and disturbing moments, but there were also plenty of moments that just fell flat thanks to sub par acting. If I had to point to one thing that I found particularly great, it would be the soundtrack which was done by Disasterpiece, who worked on the games Fez and Hyper Light Drifter. If you’re a horror fan, I think It Follows is a movie you should watch at least once, if for nothing more than to see what all the hype is about.
Score: 3 out of 5
Tumblr media
-6-  Krampus
2015 | PG-13 | 1hr 38m
Two things I particularly enjoy in the horror genre are movies with a Christmas theme and those that integrate comedy. Krampus does both of these nearly perfectly. There’s nothing more unsettling than seeing people being terrorized during what is supposed to be one of the happiest times of the year. While it’s not the scariest movie you’ll probably ever see, between homicidal gingerbread men, grotesque children’s toys, and freaky little elves there’s just so much to love about Krampus.
Score: 4 out of 5
Tumblr media
-7-  The Midnight After
2014 | NR | 2h 2m
I originally watched The Midnight After on a whim and I’m glad I did because it’s kind of fantastic. Set in Hong Kong, a group of strangers catch a late night ride on a minibus and soon realize they are the only people left in the city. What follows is one wild ride of a movie filled with a ton of bizarre and off-the-wall moments. Some of these moments actually kept me thinking about the film days after I watched it. It really is a movie that has to be seen to best understand and, if you have Netflix, you should definitely give it a shot.
Score: 4 out of 5
Tumblr media
-8-  Train to Busan
2016 | NR | 1h 58m
Prior to watching Train to Busan I had heard great things about it and I’m thrilled to say that it did not disappoint. In a genre that has been over saturated by zombies in the last few years, Train to Busan feels like a fresh take. It displays one the most brutal and relentless depictions of zombies I’ve ever seen in a movie and it also features a cast of endearing characters that I actually came to care about. There were also a handful of jaw-dropping moments that I wasn’t expecting to see. I can’t say enough good things about Train to Busan. It’s absolutely a movie that all horror or zombie fans should check out.
Score: 5 out of 5

Original Post from Security Affairs Author: Pierluigi Paganini
In mid-March, a suspicious Office document referencing the Ukraine elections appeared in the wild, is it related to APT28 and upcoming elections?
Introduction
In mid-March, a suspicious Office document referencing the Ukraine elections appeared in the wild. This file was uncommon, it seemed carefully prepared and was speaking about who is leading in the elections polls, arguing about the life of the favorite candidate, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who is defined Servant of the People, along with a strong headline referencing conflicts between Ukraine and Russia. A copy of the Daily Express’ article published back in February.
This document actually is the first step of a more complex cyber attack.
Figure 1: Overview of the malicious document
The particular theme and its detection timing attracted our attention, so we decided to dig further to assess the nature of this malicious document.
Technical Analysis
Sha256 8a35b6ecdf43f42dbf1e77235d6017faa70d9c68930bdc891d984a89d895c1e7 Threat Document dropper Brief Description Dropper of possible APT28 sample ukraine elections Ssdeep 12288:hRd2KFJ7uq9U2Gaz6L2qJnlIzeTLC7m0HmhVyqZPY/q7rB:/RFwqK21VolI6TL0m0GhM6LF
Figure 2: password required to view and modify macros on document
The first peculiarity of the malicious document is the protected macro, in fact, when the user tries to read it immediately shows a message box asking for password. This Office password protection could be easily bypassed using the classic malware analysis tools and after the code extraction, it’s possible to analyze the plain-text code as follows.
Figure 3: source code of the document macro
At first glance there is no trace of obfuscated code, but an anomalous function invocation could be spotted into the macro: ActiveDocument.BuiltInDocumentProperties.Item(“Company”).This method allows to recover a property belonging to the document metadata. In the specific case, the code tries to read the value contained within the “Company” property, which is embedding a base64 encoded string.
Figure 4: Payload stored in “Company” tag of document metadata
The usage of document properties section to hide the malicious payload has also been used by the Emotet banking malware, one of the most aggressive malware threats against companies and users all around the world. Anyway, unlike the initial code, the decoded payload revealed a  highly obfuscated Powershell command.
Figure 5: powershell code after base64 to ascii conversion
After several deobfuscation stages, the clear code is the following:
Figure 6: clear powershell code
This script is quite interesting because its first action aims to lower its fingerprint: it disables the Powershell ScriptBlock logging and the Antimalware Scan Interface (AMSI).
The ScriptBlock logging feature was introduced in Powershell v5 and is able to log blocks of code as they are executed by the PowerShell engine, including obfuscated snippet and the correspondent deobfuscated one. AMSI, instead, is a versatile interface standard that allows applications and services to integrate with any anti-malware product installed on a machine, allowing them to evaluate code just prior to its execution, possibly after the payload de-obfuscation. Further detail about AMSI have been described in a previous analysis report.
So, the malware checks the current Powershell version: if it is greater or equal than 3, it disables the above mentioned security features. Both the features are bypassed using a few lines of code. The ScriptBlock logging can be disabled through the following instructions:
$settings = [Ref].Assembly.GetType(“System.Management.Automation.Utils”).GetField(“cachedGroupPolicySettings”,”NonPublic,Static”).GetValue($null);
$settings[“HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftWindowsPowerShellScriptBlockLogging”] = @{}
$settings[“HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwarePoliciesMicrosoftWindowsPowerShellScriptBlockLogging”].Add(“EnableScriptBlockLogging”, “0”)
And the AMSI bypass code, instead, is even simpler:
[Ref].Assembly.GetType(‘System.Management.Automation.AmsiUtils’).GetField(‘amsiInitFailed’,’NonPublic,Static’).SetValue($null,$true)
This instruction is able to modify the value of “amsiInitFailed” variable, setting it to “true”. In this way, when the “ScanContent” method uses the variable to determine if AMSI should scan the command to be executed, it returns the AMSI_RESULT_NOT_DETECTED value and lets the payload run. Investigating these techniques, it seems the malware writer has taken inspiration from this article to implement these functionalities. The blog post, in fact, explains both AMSI and BlockLogging disabling techniques.
At this point, the powershell code tries to download the next infection stage from “hxxps://functiondiscovery[.]net:8443/admin/get.php”, after setting up the InternetExplorer 11 User-Agent to stay under the radar. This code also includes a Powershell Empire characteristic indicator: the cookie   “session=J+kcj5bWE11g4zBLrjvZjNO296I=”.
Figure 7: user agent set by malware
The network communication ends up into a command and control address is located in Czech Republic. This IP is was first seen on October 2018 and was active until April 2019.
Figure 8: information about DropURL/C2
A Problematic Attribution
The portion of script contacting the C2 server are created using the popular post-exploitation tool Empire and some Sofacy samples already analyzed by other firms used Empire-generated script as post-exploitation module.
APT28 (aka Fancy Bear, Pawn Storm, SofacyGroup, Sednit, and STRONTIUM)   launched several attacks on democratic institutions in Europe between September and December 2018.
The APT28 group has been active since at least 2007 and it has targeted governments, militaries, and security organizations worldwide. The group was involved also in the string of attacks that targeted 2016 Presidential election.
According to a report published by Symantec in October, the group was actively conducting cyber espionage campaigns against government and military organizations in Europe and South America.
Starting in 2017 and continuing into 2018, the APT28 group returned to covert intelligence gathering operations in Europe and South America.
Moreover, according to FireEye’s analysis about the Russia-linked APT groups, APT28 is “increasing its reliance on public code repositories, such as Carberp, PowerShell Empire, P.A.S. webshell, Metasploit modules and others, likely to accelerate their development cycle and provide plausible deniability”. Also, the hot argument covered by the malicious document and its discovery date suggests the possibility of a state-sponsored attack.
However, the capabilities of the analyzed sample makes some confusion about the attribution. As previously mentioned, in fact, the document’s content is not obfuscated in any way: the user can read the entire article about Ukraine elections, so why should he enable the macros? Moreover, also the macro code is totally readable without the usage of encryption or obfuscation to evade detection. The only macro protection mechanism consists in locking dev project from viewing through password, but it is easily bypassable using the classic malware analysis tools. All these elements are not too characteristics of the canonical APT28 droppers, in which the heavy obfuscation has been traditionally adopted. SecurityArtWork team, in their analysis, hypothesize the sample belongs to Sofacy group due to similarities between an older sample (8cccdce85beca7b7dc805a7f048fcd1bc8f7614dd7e13c2986a9fa5dfbbbbdf9) studied by Vitali Kremez. The researchers team highlighted the likeness between the functions names used into the macro code and the usage of WMI connector to start a new malicious process.
However, analyzing both the documents, the macros do not show the same structure even if the name of some functions are equals. In the right figure, corresponding to the sample analyzed by Vitali Kremez, the code is quite obfuscated: it includes “$” character to evade AVs and a custom base64 routine to perform decoding.
Figure 9: Macro comparison: newer sample (left) vs older sample (right)
The part of macro in which WMI is invoked corresponds to a trick used to bypass Microsoft ASR(Attack Surface Reduction) and launch a new process from Office applications. This trick, and the used code, is not directly related to the Russian group due to the fact that similar code snippets are publicly available on Github. So the similarity of the macro code between the documents substantially rely on this open-source code reuse.
Conclusion
We are not fully confident of this attribution, so we are investigating other recent samples related to the Sofacy group to better explore possible their interest in influencing political elections.
Further details, including Indicators of Compromise and Yara rules, are reported in the analysis published on the Yoroi Blog. Stay Tuned.
