I saw this question floating around and thought it fascinating so WOE inquiry be upon ye:

If you had to pick 5 fics you’ve written to make a “crash course” and sum up your writing personality, which would they be?

This is so sweet to ask, thank you 😭 I love a chance to ramble.

The first one has gotta be the intro to Virelan Lavellan, who hadn't been fully formed yet in my brain by this point. I'd wanna be felled by you, held by you (fuel the pyre of your enemies) is a rambling Hozier reference used as a pretty cover for primal kink fade sex. I just really like making beautiful smut and using it for character revelations.

Another smut as character study is this fic that forms little vignettes around bits of canon banter between Solas and Blackwall. Lay Down Your Armour was my case for the Blackwall x Solas ship as an example of two similar men finding refuge in each other. It was one of the works that really cemented my love for Solas rarepairs.

Another rarepair I love is Solas x Iron Bull, and I got to explore that with King's Gambit — it's another pairing built around character studies of two liars, replete with a drake fight, philosophy talk surrounding Bull becoming Tal Vashoth, and also gay sex so yay!

Continuing on with rarepairs, as well as vignettes built around canon banter, I used actual lines from the game to make a case for a romance between Cassandra and Solas. My life is like the dust (that hides the glow of a rose) is smut free (I know, crazy right?) and chock full of romance, including candlelit evenings reading together, a dance among flowers, and poetry.

Finally, I just really love crafting atmosphere and writing introspection, and Solas in the Temple of Dirthamen is prime material for that. I wrote this little one shot, in our eternity, only darkness reigns, to explore Solas's thoughts while exploring the temple of the young Evanuris he locked away — maybe one he'd even considered his friend, seeing as how his statue guards the temple's entrance.

The Mummy AU is a funny little idea I had where Solas and Dorian are archaeologists, Mahariel and Bull are the hired muscle, and the spirit of Mythal in Morrigan's body is attempting to hunt Solas in order to resurrect Fen'harel. I wanted a Solas/Mahariel pairing but I guess it could work with Lavellan too? I haven't really done anything for this because 1. time and 2. I want to re-watch the movie lol.

Last book I read: Sapiens: From Animals to Gods by Yuval Harari. A really good and interesting book about the evolution of humanity and religion, societal developments, where humanity may be in the future, etc.

Greatest literary inspiration: Not sure I have any, to be honest.

Things in my current fandom I want to read but I don't want to write: I'd love to read a fic that centers around big events in DA history like the fall of the elvhen empire after Solas brings up the Veil, the fall of Arlathan, the Exalted Marches, etc.

For ME, I'd like to read fics set in what the me2 characters were doing before the events of the game. Garrus in Omega, Samara searching for Morinth, Zaeed looking for Vido, etc

Things in my current fandoms I want to write but I think nobody would be interested in them but me: I mean, I mostly write rarepairs, so that doesn't get much attention already. I'm currently writing about Leliana's mom, who I hc was a Carta dwarf that through the twists of fate ended up working for Lady Cecile.

I love writing about obscure characters and giving depth to characters who have 2 lines of dialogue in the games lol.

You can recognize my writing by: If you find a ME or DA rare rarepair on ao3, there's a good chance that it was written by me lol

I always open fics with either descriptions of scenery ("It was a busy day at the Grand Cathedral") or direct dialogue (“Shouldn’t be much longer now, Natia”). And my fics very rarely go over 2k words.

I think this is a common thing for writers, but I've always felt that most of my smut fics are quite similar to each other.

My most controversial take (current fandom): I have a lot lol. I'll give 2 for Mass Effect and 2 for Dragon Age.

As much as I enjoy them, I don't like how most of the squadmates don't ever stand up to Shepard and are pretty much just yes men and women who go along with everything Shepard does (it's also why Ash and Kaidan are among my favs)

I think curing the Genophage in me3 is a mistake (I prefer Mordin surviving and going to work on the Crucible and then continue working on a cure to be used later when the galaxy is more stable, as his ending slides show)

For Dragon Age, Loghain was right in retreating from Ostagar cause the battle was unwinnable, and (not sure if this qualifies as a controversial take) Vivienne is the best Divine imo.

Top three favourite tropes: Not sure if these are tropes per se, but I enjoy Fighting before kissing, reuniting after being separated for years,

The Silmarillion - Maedhros/Thingol

This is just where my brain is at right now. Firmly believe they could either fix each other or have the worst break-up in Middle-earth history. They are either working through it and healing to become their best selves, or Thingol's loathing for Maedhros is bottomless and Maedhros' guilt knows no end. Also, the sex is bomb.

Succession - Gerri/Roman

The second we got hints at an older woman/younger man ship I was foaming at the mouth. I have long been a connoisseur of age gap ships but it's always always with the man as the older one. I mean 99.99% of the time. GET IT, Gerri. I love that the show allowed Roman to be genuinely and deeply attracted to Gerri. I was worried they were going to have him move on to a younger woman, but his final scene in the entire show is him sipping Gerri's favorite drink and smiling to himself!! Yeah he fucked it all up but he still loved her and that mattered to him!

Dragon Age - Lavellan/Solas

Yeah yeah call me plebeian or whatever but there's a reason this ship is so popular. It's because it fucks so incredibly hard. Local re-awoken god falls for some rando because of her sincere kindness and interest in understanding the world. Played himself by trying to get close to the inquisitor. This ship is what grabbed me by the throat and pulled me bodily into the DA fandom for two years.

Mass Effect - Shepard/Thane Krios

Thaaaaaane. Thaaaaaaaane. I love him. My philosophical lizard killer man. He wants to be good. He thinks he's beyond redemption. He can't imagine his son wants him in his life. He dropped the ball of fatherhood so hard it went into the core of the planet. He doesn't know how to be a person without his wife. He has a second chance at love! 🥺 Shepard loves him even knowing they're destined to lose him. Shepard makes him want to live again. Screaming crying throwing up etc.

Beastars - Cosmo/Ibuki

Yeah this freak-ass rarepair ship is something a buddy got me into and then I couldn't stop thinking about it. Cosmo lives for danger; what's more dangerous than Ibuki? Ibuki is so very very dedicated to what he does, and very focused on his goals--but then there's Cosmo. I actually think they complement each other very well, even though their story is virtually guaranteed to end in tragedy.

Black Sails - Anne/Max

I'm not actually done with the show but I want so so bad for these two to have a happy ending of SOME kind TT_TT Max has been fucked over so many times (ELEANOR) and I just want her to get to spend the rest of her life with someone who genuinely loves her and wants the best for her and isn't going to put their business interests above her!!! Really, I just want good things for Max. And Max seems to open up a part of Anne that even Anne didn't know was there, so I think they can be good for each other <3 Jack can be there too if he wants.

okay i'll assume you mean dragon age specifically MFDSKJFSDKJF but okay, i'll list some!!!!

the obvious ones:

fenders (fenris x anders) : i love a good narrative foil

zevistair (zevran x alistair) : idk if this counts as a rarepair but!!! their canon flirting banters always make me go sooo insane. that you can include zevran in the foursome w alistair if alistair is hardened (lol) makes me INSANE. they are basically canon aND YET!!!!!!

warden x loghain : ive written so much abt them already. you get the idea

nanders (nathaniel x anders)

the less obvious ones:

anders/merrill (bonus: anders/merrill/isabela): for all the same reasons i ship fenders (which i would argue is still relatively a popular pair, so not quite rarepair??); they're such good mirrors, they're both encapsulate what the other fears. anders being 100% okay to hurt people despite being a healer vs merrill being a blood mage who has never wanted to hurt anyone is just *chef kiss*. you can take a look at this for more compelling reasons to ship them.

fenris/merrill: for all the same reasons as above. i think if u dont ship each individual LI of the kirkwall polycule w each other, u shouldnt say u ship the kirkwall polycule.

solavelyan / soladaar / soladash / solas x non-lavellan inqs: i still think it should've been a romance option for all inqs tho i suppose they didn't really have the time to develop a non-lavellan route for them, but i love thinking about it, and i love the vibes for it so much. again, i love narrative foils, and i think it's so natural to be drawn to someone who could understand you like that.

alistair x bethany: a not-templar and a not-circle mage, in the wardens together. i think they'd really like each other and have a very interesting kind of energy!!! they've both got these secret bitter/spiteful sides to them, there's a lot of parallels (like alistair thinking warden conscription is a good thing bc it was for him and bethany having v different emotions abt being a warden in general). i've also really enjoyed most of the fics i've read for them.

nathaniel x f!cousland: UNFORTUNATELY THOUGH i dont think i've been able to find the kind of fic i want for them in the tag. i've got too many wips as it is, but maybe one day i'll write the nathaniel/f!cousland fic of my dreams...

nathaniel x anora: this one is admittedly @rosella-writes' fault, but they've got me by the THROAT as a concept

m!hawke/cullen: LIKE ESPECIALLY IF IT'S ONE-SIDED FOR CULLEN it's something that can be SO fascinating to explore (esp in an amell worldstate). [shaking cullen] babygirl what is WRONG with you!!!!!!!

m!hawke/sebastian: sebastian grappling with his admiration for hawke vs his chantry vows but THIS TIME make it mlm..... i think this is probably baby vee coming through w how hard i used to ship d/estiel in the early 00's LMAO. fsr they hit the same beats in my skull.

morrigan/leliana: noooo girlies don't fight haha <3 they should dump the warden and kiss instead <3

josephine/the iron bull: i read a few fics for them that admittedly captured my interest. i think their dynamic is something that could really be interesting to delve into for so many reasons. i've read the evidence and i find it compelling enough to put on this list

okay, so this idea is starting to run away from me, but I have TECHNICALLY filled it and will probably be doing another chapter/sequel that's a bit naughtier for @dadrunkwriting ~~~

A furious white-haired elf was something ever Varric expected to see barrelling toward him again.  "What the void are -"

"Where's Hawke?"

"Gone, Broody."  He shook his head.  "I wrote Rivaini and Daisy, but -"

A gauntlet pushed him back in his chair.  "I will rephrase.  Where did you lose them?"

"Adamant.  Western Orlais, but -"

Fenris spun around and stalked out.  The dwarf rubbed his face and sighed.  This was not going to go well.  And someone needed to tell Sparker to take a long vacation.

"What a prig."  Sera appeared next to him.  "And those tattoos, he must think he's even elfier than Solas."

Varric winced.  "Not exactly.  Can you go find Sparkler and drag him on a treasure hunt or something?  Keep him out of sight?"

The girl frowned.  "Not gonna let some pricked up puff of a man walk in here and-"

"Did you read my book?"

She snorted.  "’Course not."

The dwarf sighed.  "Of course not.  Look, Broody used to belong to a magister; belong as in slave?  I just want to soften the surprise so no one ends up with extrails as opposed to entrails." 

"Extrails."   She giggled.  "Nice one.  Alright, I'll get our pet peacock to go strut off somewhere."

He nodded his thanks and hurried out, right into the elfiest elf of them all.  Solas cocked his head at him curiously.  "It's not often I find you in the Herald's Rest."

"Technically, you still haven't.”  He looked around.  “I don't suppose you saw a pissed elf run past you?"

"Pissed as in intoxicated?"

"Pissed as in looked like he wanted to kill something."

"Ah, then yes."  Solas pursed his lips, looking faintly irritated.  "What is he?"

"Oh come on, are you telling me you've read everything but my books?"  Varris grumbled as he pushed past him.

Solas followed him.  "I skimmed it; does that mean he's your ex-slave?"

"Shit, Chuckles, never let him hear you say that."  The dwarf paused.  "Which way did he go?"

"Toward the cells."

Oh no.  "Is Erimond still down there?"

"I believe the Inquisitor planned to pass judgment tomorrow."

He sped up.  "Broody might have just taken care of that himself."

"I saw no weapon, how much can he do that quickly?"

"Wow, really?  Are you sure you even skimmed The Tale of the Champion?"  Varric scoffed.  "The man is basically half lyrium."

As expected, Fenris was inside Erimond's cell, and his hand was inside the mage's ribcage.  What wasn't expected was that he had an audience.  Isabela and Merril both looked like shit, and- 

"Blondie, are you insane?"

Anders shrugged and tugged the hood closer as his eyes flashed blue.  "Hawke needs us." 

Erimond made a pained gurgling noise and dropped to the ground as Fenris released his spine or his heart or whatever he'd been threatening to rip out.  "He knows nothing."

"Kill him anyway."  Isabela's voice was rough, and her arm tightened around Merrill's shoulders. 

"It is not our place."  Anders' voice had two tones in it, a sure sign that Big Blue and Angry was considering coming out to play.  "We need to go."

"Go where?"  Varric asked.  "Don't get me wrong, staying here is a terrible idea, but -"

Merrill looked at him, and the force of that glare made him step back a pace.  Back in Kirkwall, with all her fumbling and bumbling, it had been hard to remember just how powerful she was.  "We're getting Emjee back."

"She -"

"They."  There was Big Blue and Angry.

Solas nodded apologetically, then continued.  "They were physically in the Fade, no normal mortal can just -"

Merrill walked up to him.  Stalked, more likely.  Her fingers were still entwined in the pirate's.  "Then I suppose you'll have to help us."

The other elf blinked at her in confusion, then concern.  "Whatever do you mean?"

"The spirits speak of you."  She cocked her head to the side, scrutinizing him, and Varric wasn't sure if he'd ever seen the elf so discomfited.  "You're coming to fix this.  It doesn't balance any scales to leave them to die alone, does it?"  She swung that gaze back to Varric.  "And you'll be explaining to the Inquisitor that Fe - Solas here needs to take a leave of absence."

Varric frowned.  "The world is ending, Daisy, this isn't -"

"And I trust you to save it while we save Hawke."  With that, Merrill walked out, Isabela in tow.  Anders followed after them.  Fenris spat on Erimond's crumpled form before phasing back through the bars of his cell.

"What is - what did you just do?"  Solas asked, surprised and intrigued.

Fenris arched eyebrow then glanced at Varric.  "Not a fan of yours?"

The dwarf snorted.  "Definitely not my books, not sure about my person."

He shook his head and held up a hand, then let it glow blue.  "This is a curse that I have made into a blessing."  As it dimmed, he touched Varric's shoulder and squeezed gently.  "We will bring them back, or die."

The dwarf patted the gauntlet.  “The first one.  I just write tragedies, don’t want to live through another one.”

"You are determined," Solas observed.

The other elf looked at him.  "Hawke is important."

"Who's blood is that on you?"

Fenris glanced at the splatter then waved a hand back toward Erimond's cell.  "His.  Probably.  Don't worry, I left him alive for your Inquisition."

This one I wrote for @midnightprelude during 2022's @dasmutquisition. It was a major challenge because I wanted it to be an homage to her and oftachancer's fic "Pour Forth Thy Soul in Ecstasy" (which is *amazing*) while also giving it my own twist. I had to invent a bunch of Tevinter lore but I'm super happy with how this turned out!
