China’s massive rollout of renewable energy is accelerating, its investments in the sector growing so large that international climate watchdogs now expect the country’s greenhouse-gas emissions to peak years earlier than anticipated—possibly as soon as this year[!!!].

In 2020, Chinese leader Xi Jinping pledged that the country’s emissions would begin falling before 2030 and hit net zero before 2060, part of its plan prepared under the Paris accord. The country is six years ahead of schedule: China reached 1,050 gigawatts of wind and solar capacity at the end of 2023, and the China Electricity Council forecast last month that capacity would top 1,300 gigawatts by the end of this year.[...]

Its been twenty years since the first stage of this apocalypse, its now the thirteenth stage. You were born in the third stage. The Zombie and population had been growing over the years, other humans gone missing and then found hysterical and empty.

Behold my craziest theory about the Plants in manga.

Everything below is not my take on the actual canon, but rather just a fun theory I came up with based on some plot holes.

Okay, so listen: people in Trigan didn't just become incapable of obtaining food and energy naturally, without the Plants. They're probably genetically altered in such a way that they are unable to use food and energy that doesn't come from the Plants.

That's why they don't use solar panels on the No Man Land, even though it would seem like an obvious solution. And that's why the townsfolk in Chapter 47 all died out in a few days.

Soldiers speculated that it could have been up to two months after the city was cut off from the world.

But in such a period of time, the Ark would have time to fly over the horizon and it was seen on the fifth day of the soldiers' stay in this area. And the day before, that is on the fourth day, there were still people alive in the town and they still had the strength to make riots.

But on the 7th day, when soldiers reached the town, there was no one alive (except for one man).

"Exposure" in the original was "burns" ( implying sunburns). That is, people not only managed to die of hunger and thirst before the Ark had time to disappear beyond the horizon, but sunburns also were mentioned among the causes of death. So, the Plants not only provided food and water, but also somehow protected against solar radiation, which is probably why there are so few suntanned people on the NML.

This means that the bodies of the humans in Trigan are completely changed and die in a matter of days without a Plant presence anywhere near them and without consuming food containing Plant biomass (since even the cannibals in that town didn't survive). They are literally completely dependent on the Plants, just as the Plants are dependent on the life support terminals they are connected to.

And we also have mutated humans and humans with Plant-like abilities, like Elendira, who can create matter from nothing (her nails literally appear in her suitcase out of nowhere, they are neither stored in it nor teleported from somewhere else by some device)

and Legato, who can manipulate electricity and take control of other people's bodies, which is reminiscent of Knives' ability to control the merged being. When Knives "connected" to Domina with a thin feeler, it looked very similar to Legato's technique.

(It's not impossible, however, that Knives intentionally copied Legato's trick. )

What's my point? You know, there's this trope in horror stories: an alien ship/meteorite falls from the sky and infects the land and living things all around so that people, who lived there, become unable to live outside the ship/meteorite radiation zone or eat normal food. And they, these people, gradually turning into aliens or mutants. So, what if the same thing happens in Trigan, it's just that in this universe humans, unlike in all these movies and stories, didn't avoid the " impact zone", but rather took the alien DNA and spread it all over the Earth. So Trigun humans are no longer 100% humans, but part of the Plants' biosystem, which is why dependent Plants forgave them so easily and don't really mind to be "used".

This could also be related to the presence of ghosts, which can be both human's (like Conrad and Wolfwood) and independent's (like Tessla). The existence of ghosts is not revealed to public, most likely so that people won't find out that after death they will spend eternity in a gloomy black void.

What are independent plants for then? Most likely they are some sort of walking weapons. From the conversations of the Earthlings we can conclude that Knives is not the only aggressive independent (he was just the strongest of the known ones) and that independents on Earth have their abilities blocked for humans' safety ( so most likely all independents have weapons built into their bodies).

What's the need for weapons against humans if the dependent plants don't mind their position and "humans" are in some sense part of them? Maybe to regulate their numbers, or to stimulate their reproduction and further mutation, maybe the Plants need not humans but their souls (ghosts), or maybe independents are something like immune cells that get rid of improperly developing body cells.

Bulky additives could make cheaper solar cells last longer

An insight into preventing perovskite semiconductors from degrading quickly, discovered at the University of Michigan, could help enable solar cells estimated to be two to four times cheaper than today's thin-film solar panels. The study is published in the journal Matter. Perovskites may also be combined with the silicon-based semiconductors that are prevalent in today's solar panels to create "tandem" solar cells that could surpass the maximum theoretical efficiency of silicon solar cells. "Silicon solar cells are great because they are very efficient and can last for a very long time, but the high efficiency comes with a high cost," said Xiwen Gong, U-M assistant professor of chemical engineering. "To make high-purity silicon, temperatures over 1,000 degrees Celsius are needed. Otherwise, the efficiency won't be as good."

The power is out at my house. It has been ridiculously windy all day today, which in and of itself is a very nice thing (I love the sound!). But where we live, there are a lot of trees, and when there's a lot of wind and a lot of trees, there's usually a lot of fallen branches. And sometimes those branches fall onto power lines, and it becomes a big huge mess.

Oh right; you might be wondering how we of my world generate power. We don't have mako; if our planet has any lifeguts to it (it probably doesn't), it's so far down underground that no one can get to it (which is probably a good thing, since corporations in my world are A LOT like Shinra in your world). My state produces electricity primarily by hydropower (using big bodies of water like rivers to spin great big turbines), wind power (using naturally-existing air currents to spin turbines), and natural gas (primarily comprised of methane, it is burned to generate electricity). Encouragingly, we are seeing more solar farms lately (the power at my house comes from a solar farm); solar farms are huge plots of land that have big panels angled towards the sun, and when the sun shines on the panels, somehow they produce electricity. I don't know enough about it to explain how it works. Sorry about that. But it's definitely a thing where I live.

The power at my house has been out since 11am. And it is currently 8:30pm. And there seems to be no sign of it getting fixed anytime soon.

M and I sleep with CPAPs. In my case, it's due to the fact that my lower jaw is a bit too small to hold all the soft tissue inside my face (one of my numerous genetic defects; oh well). If we don't sleep with a CPAP, the airways close up when we sleep, and then our bodies have to partially wake over and over and over again in the night so that we don't suffocate. Naturally, this interferes with a person's ability to sleep. Sleep is when the brain cleans itself of debris so that our neurons can fire properly.

So over time, the damage from disrupted sleep accumulates and manifests as hormonal issues, daytime sleepiness, and a variety of other nasty things like increased risk of stroke or heart attack. Left untreated, sleep apnea can seriously fuck a person up or even kill them. And the scary thing about it is that you can have it without even realizing it. M had it for years without realizing it, until I started sleeping next to him and noticed it. It's sneaky stuff.

Anyway, a CPAP needs electricity to work. The power loss is localized to our community, so everywhere else is fine. So M, J, and I ended up needing to book a hotel room for the night, which is inconvenient and annoying, but not terrible.

Sadly, though I found the HDMI ports for the TV in the hotel room, the little remote that it comes with doesn't allow for changing the input. So we cannot play on the PS5, which means we cannot continue to explore the second part of your story today. But that's all right. Maybe I'll cut some bitches in Salt and Sanctuary or something. I like to run around in that game cosplayed as Julian Devorak, destroying everything with either a great big hammer (which looks like a giant meat tenderizer) or a giant pair of scissors. I can think of no game more perfect to cosplay as him in; it's got crows, it's got wine, it's got salt (Nevivon, where he was raised, was famous for its salt), it's got gold coins, and it's got danger everywhere you look. Julian is very fond of ALL these things (though I wish he was not fond of some of these things; he's maybe a bit of a walking disaster, haha…).

…I really can't stress enough just how rare it is that I stream, though, because I have too many other priorities. For whatever that's worth.

In any case, we spent most of the day hanging out with Br. In the afternoon, we had a serious discussion, but it was a very good thing which ultimately led to the strengthening of our bond (strengthening the bond and developing a better understanding of one another are what discussions are for, after all!).

Then, as per the appointments we scheduled this morning in service to the safety of our little polyamorous family, J and I went over to a local pharmacy in the evening to begin getting HPV vaccines, just in case. Br is a new addition, so it's important that everyone be very safe. J and I probably should have gotten this set of vaccines much sooner in life to begin with, but it's better late than never. Being conscientious and straightforward about this stuff is extremely important, because in a polyamorous setting, failure to do otherwise is a huge safety hazard for everyone who is connected to one another in this way.

HPV is short for Human Papilloma Virus. Most strains are harmless, but a few of them cause cancer, and the most common means we have of protecting against most diseases in this context does not work against HPV. So it's better to get the vaccine. J and I will likely feel like garbage for the next couple of days, but that is the natural result of getting any vaccination, and it's a lot better than the potential alternatives; conventional wisdom says that cancer of the orifices is not a fun time, and I'm very inclined to take this bit of conventional wisdom very seriously. It'll be 6 months before we are fully inoculated, but it's well worth the wait. After that, everyone will be fully screened for any sort of infection, and once that's done, everything will be good to go! I'm excited!

While at the pharmacy, one of the workers recognized one of the items I carried around. He seemed very excited, and he showed me one of his favorite items (an adorable soft plush! it was wonderful!). So we exchanged contact information. Hopefully we can become friends. But I recognize that I might end up being a little too weird for his tastes in a variety of respects, haha… That'll be disappointing if that happens. But ya know… I can relate to what Aerith said at Cosmo Canyon; I've never been and never will be "normal". But there are people around who love me nonetheless for some reason, so I suppose I might as well embrace it, right? Being abnormal is really not so bad most of the time.

I'm gonna go cut up some zombies with my giant pair of scissors now. But I've not played in a while, so I'm likely more than a little rusty. Wish me luck, yeah?

Oh, question, do you think Flatlanders are autotrophes (photosynthesis), heterotrophes (nom nom) or like Euglena (have a light sensitive "eye" patch to see if there's light to photosyntetize but will nom things if more convenient)? Ignoring the fact that Bill claims to be a being of pure energy (which either means he got some caffeine or he is being very loopholey about Einstein's E=m times c squared. Or is being hyper dramatic)

I've only very briefly thought about how flatlanders fuel before, so this is VERY subject to change, but:

I'd never heard the word "Euglena" before but that's actually surprisingly close to the idea I've been toying with—that maybe they get most of their energy directly from absorbing light, and a minority from eating. I'm toying with the idea that they get sunlight from the third dimension, which means light + heat + energy is constantly radiating into their dimension and hitting all their "insides", so even if they can't see where it comes from they could potentially have evolved a bunch of internal biological solar panels to absorb it.

But I assume they need to eat at least a little bit of something—we've got multiple references to Bill eating and drinking and giving himself teeth and tongues, and multiple potential-ex-Flatlanders with obvious mouths, and I tend to think that's something they started out with rather than something they picked up after leaving the second dimension—so physical food features somewhere in their diet.

I think Bill's "being of pure energy" claim is like 99% true, but that's not a Flatlander thing, it happened after he destroyed his dimension. They aren't beings of pure energy, he is.

(But again: all this is super preliminary thinking, I may change my mind later. I have drawn his childhood home with a fridge tho.)

Here's the second half of "Fight! Pekopon Soldier", a couple of lines were a bit tricky, but for the most part I'm confident (^.^) for this one it was lucky that it was paced in a way that let me neatly separate it, the next one is already several short tracks, but the third one will be interesting to figure out.

Either way, I hope you enjoy it, as usually the script is under the cut

N: Previously, Super Natsumi fell into the hands of the Keronians, however, in response to that pinch, a new Earth soldier, Miracle Fuyuking came rushing in.

FYK: Fuyuking~! Uwagh! Since when was a rope-

N: And got captured. Weak. That was such a weak display, our Fuyuking!

K66: Eh? What's that you have? Let~ Me~ See~ Ah.

FYK: Ah! My prized crystal skull I brought for some reason!

K66: (awkward noises) The Pekopon soldiers have failed. Well then, let's subject these two to the vaulting horse torture

M: Roger! Vaulting horse torture, stand by!

723: Ahh~!

FYK: Vaulting horse torture is so....

K66: This solar powered panel doubles as a heat sink, and has good stability

723: It stings! I-it's well made!
