how can they make a shitty godzilla film after pacific rim came out last year? for real though i reckon pacific rim is really significant as a critique of cinema in an age of capitalist crisis. zizek has gone on a lot about the massive increase in apocalyptic films in the past 6 years and in most of these films humanity is the passive victim of (super)natural forces and events. the huge increase in apocalyptic themes and imagery when a given mode of production is in crisis is a constant throughout history (see the book of revelations for the end of ancient society, the work of hieronymous bosch for the end of feudalism, etc).  yet in pacific rim humanity manages to fight back against its utter ruin via massive robots. as stacker pentecost declares in a speech near the end: "the apocalypse is cancelled". however this is predicated on the basis of all countries "pooling their resources" and "putting aside old rivalries", i.e a planned economy on an international scale -- something that cannot be achieved on the basis of capitalism. pacific rim is therefore a warning; a planned economy or apocalypse, socialism or barbarism, making giant robots or the end of human life at the hands of dinosaurs that come out of the sea
