Did you know that theorist Dr. Martin Hoffman identified four Stages of Empathy Development? Empathy might be most apparent to us among older children, but there are stages of development that we can support in the early childhood years. Join Cindy and Alison - together in one room for the first time on this podcast - for an explanation of how children develop empathy and what we can do to help them.

KinderCare Pulls the Plug on Long Island Day Care
KinderCare pulled the plug on its Long Island day care center on Monday, leaving parents with only a few days to make other arrangements for their kids. The abrupt decision stunned and angered many.
Gearreald established new programs to refocus curriculum. Among them, KinderCare at Work on-site corporate centers were developed to appeal to busy working parents.
Safety & Security
It’s no secret that a large part of the reason parents send their children to child kinder care centers is for the assurance of safety. The vast majority of facilities prioritize this aspect and do a great job at minimizing physical risks, such as falls, accidents and bullying.
Other concerns revolve around internal safety issues, such as security protocols and staff screening procedures. This involves doing thorough background checks on employees and asking for recommendations from trusted sources. It also means utilizing secure software to keep track of drop off and pick up times and verifying that everyone who should be there is present.
Some state regulations require a visitor management system to keep track of who is in the building, including children and adults. This may be a low-tech sheet of paper or more advanced software that verifies IDs at the door and keeps a record of everyone who enters. Keeping doors locked at all times is another important measure.
Social & Emotional Development
Developing strong social and emotional skills is essential for a child's well-being. These skills help kids build trusting relationships with their caregivers, navigate a range of emotions, and explore their environment with confidence that they can return to a safe harbor at any time.
Children develop these skills through the relationships they form with their caregivers and teachers, including those at kinder care. They also learn how to interact with their peers through play and other interactions that foster socialemotional development.
Research shows that a child’s learning and development are more likely to take place in environments where there is a synergy of three elements: environment, play, and relationships. Learn how Tatjana Gregova, Peer Support Teacher in Bitola is implementing these strategies to support young children’s self-regulation and emotional well-being.
Learning & Growth
Unlike other child care companies of the day, Kinder-Care recognized that its success would be determined by how well it nurtured children, teachers and families. A science-backed focus on talent, engagement strategies and values alignment became the cornerstones of the company’s turnaround.
To help Kinder-Care teachers thrive, the company implemented a new training program, offering courses on topics like classroom safety and how to build strong relationships with students. In addition, teachers were offered a variety of training opportunities at their local centers and through online resources.
The company also sought niche markets that helped it recover from its crisis, including establishing KinderCare at Work on-site corporate centers for employees of Citicorp, Ford Motor Company and Lego Systems. To help parents manage their busy schedules, the company began providing laundry and dry cleaning service at select centers. The company also added hairdressers and shoe repair services to their offerings.
Community
Children need to feel connected to their kinder. This sense of community helps them develop a strong sense of self-worth and supports their ability to learn about and interact with diversity.
Developing a child care program is a hard-working job. It is helpful to have a network of supportive professionals to turn to for moral support. While child care centers have classrooms filled with teachers, floaters and administrators, family child care can often be a lonely endeavor.
Creating partnerships within your community can benefit your program in many ways. Partnering with a local bank to teach children and their families about financial literacy is one example. You can also host annual events to provide emergency preparedness information from local first responders to children and their parents. This promotes open communication and a single message, making it easier for all to respond to an emergency situation. This is an ideal way to build community in your child care program.

The Social-Emotional Development of a Child at an Early Childcare Centre
Early learning centers provide a wide variety of activities to support children’s socialemotional development. These include interacting with others, regulating emotions, taking turns and learning about the world around them.
Design features for parents should convey welcome and warmth, with convenient places to leave and store items like strollers, car seats and coats. Visit other child care centers to learn about how they address these needs.
Social-Emotional Development
The social-emotional development of a child during preschool years is critical to their future success. It is when children learn who they are, understand their emotions and feelings, and develop a strong sense of self-regulation.
It is also when they begin to build relationships with their peers and adults. They learn to interact respectfully with others and take turns while learning and playing together.
Tumblr media
Early childcare centre are designed to nurture a child’s social-emotional development through group interactions and play. This will give them the skills to be resilient and confident throughout their lives. These skills include interacting with others, understanding their own and other’s emotions, and taking turns. These skills will help them later on in life to form healthy relationships and be able to focus on their studies.
Visual and Creative Arts
For many children, art-making is a way of expressing themselves and making sense of their emotions. It also teaches them how to share resources and communicate with others in an effective manner.
Researchers have built upon Vygotsky’s theory that language acts as a tool to mediate thinking and found that visual representations of children’s ideas are more closely connected to their thoughts than verbal expressions. They also support children to transform their understandings through co-construction.
A good design will provide a space that is calming, inviting and encourages creative play. It should include spaces with natural materials and fibers that are durable and easy to clean, and child-sized furnishings. It should also have acoustics that address noise levels in a space that will be full of young children.
Language Development
A child’s spoken language development is crucially important for their cognitive advancement. Studies show that a child’s vocabulary in early childhood is a strong predictor of their academic achievement later in life.
Children begin to develop their language skills in the womb, using cries and
gestures. Once they’re born, they communicate through babbling and cooing and often respond to caregivers with “motherese”, a high-pitched sing-song voice that can stimulate early language development.
Children’s language development in a childcare centre is supported through playbased learning and interactions with other children. Teachers and educational assistants are also able to identify children with specific speech difficulties, implementing a programme that helps prevent them from falling behind academically. They also offer a range of other activities that help encourage language development, such as reading, storytelling and singing.
Physical Development
Child care centers immerse young children in group learning situations that help them develop emotional maturity, giving them the resilience and social intelligence to form healthy relationships. Studies show that these skills translate to better academic performance when they’re older.
Physical development includes children’s increased ability to control the muscles in their bodies as they explore and play. It also supports cognitive development as they use their bodies to learn about the world around them.
To promote physical development, it’s important for early learning centres to design the environment with this in mind. This involves providing enough square footage for classrooms, a variety of activities, and ample non-classroom spaces for staff to use for training, meetings and relaxation. It also means designing adult-height classroom work surfaces and sinks, a full range of storage solutions, and areas where teachers can comfortably take breaks away from children.
Nutrition
Early childcare education nutrition provides the foundation for healthy eating and active living that can last a lifetime. At Ware nursery children are offered a variety of nutritious meals that contain all the main food groups to help them grow big and strong, and learn how to make good choices for life.
EWPHCCS utilizes an environmental and policy change approach to improve nutrition, physical activity and screen-time in FCCHs. This includes local food purchasing through the Farm to Preschool program, implementing the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) guidelines for meal patterns and creating opportunities for outdoor play and Farm to ECE programs.
In addition, EWPHCCS uses an education and social and behavior change communication (SBCC) intervention for FCCHs. This includes written materials tailored to FCCH needs and interests, videos and peer support coaching using brief motivational interviewing.

📚 Thanks to @kidlitexchange #partner for this review copy of Hazelnut Days. Written by Zaü, illustrated by Emmanuel Bourdier, and published May 2018 by Mine Edition- All opinions are my own - "A touching story of fatherhood and prison" as quoted on the back. This book is a sincere look at the internal thoughts of a young child who has a father locked up. It shows him having trivial thoughts like what cologne his dad is wearing, reminiscing on memories and their family bond, him trying to understand his feelings of love and hate he has for his father, and how he and his family are handling the trauma. When you read this book it resonates like a emotional spoken word poem "He is a cloud sculpter, a mole tamer, an inventor of dirty words... But at the same time he is a void maker, a ghost king, a fog machine." Although his relationship with his father is touchy he does not deny his connection to him and still looks up to him "say what you will but one day I want to be like him". A beautiful story with touching illustrations discussing a topic that needs to be shared. ⭐Available on Amazon, here's my affiliate link: https://amzn.to/2Jt77k2⭐ #hazelnutdays #zau #emmanuelbourdier #kidlitexchange #bookstagram #bookrecommend #bookreview #childrensbook #childrensillustration #picturebook #prison #incarceratedfamily #familystruggles #trauma #socialemotional #diversebooks #toughsubject #opendiscussion

Thank you #GREEK #philosophy & #language but I’m so over you & that’s #COMPOSITIONONE. The “boyfriends” & how they bit-by-bit helped me fine tune what I want, what I will absolutely not stand for & a head’s up about #women & #men. “Dating w #PTSD” as I #write #ghostwrite & ultimately support the most at-risk & at need. Statistically, I should be dead but I’m not so HOW COME? The best really do pop up & I can’t control the world around me, what others say & do & their emotional [in]ability to exhibit self-control/self-regulation but I CAN SAY “NO.” Oh wait, I couldn’t say anything & that’s the difference. One/1/won was all “it takes one to do THE BEST & THE WORST” [to those that can’t strategize/fortify & generally understand those physical sensations so YOU STAY ALIVE. Some books are so genuinely special that they are difficult to describe, for fear of not fully doing them justice. "Virginia Wolf" (2012), by Kyo Maclear and Isabelle Arsenault, is without question one of the most beautiful books I have ever owned, in every possible aspect. Inspired in part by the relationship of writer Virginia Wolf and her sister, artist Vanessa Bell, this stunning picture book examines depression as a "wolfish day" for a young girl (and gets it SO REMARKABLY PERFECT, but in a manner that draws empathy from the reader rather than being upsetting), and her adoring sister's attempt to break through. The artwork is beyond gorgeous, evocative right down to the use of typefaces; and the resolution of the story is perfect, reminding us that it is not our job to change people's moods, but simply to embrace them with love and BE THERE ... the rest will follow in its own time. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. ⚫ ⚫ ⚫ #noodlenutskidsbooks #virginiawolf #kyomaclear #isabellearsenault #wolfish #depression #sisters #sisterhood #bestsisters #socialemotionaldevelopment #socialemotional #motherhood #kidsofinstagram #readmore #kidsbooks #whattoread #beautifulchildrensbooks #lessonplanning #creativechildhood #bookishpost #governorgeneralsliteraryaward https://www.instagram.com/p/B35UlCwHw_t/?igshid=1ejlywrbfswj5
