as an old teen and young adult, i fully comprehended the idea of "The Rapture" from "The Bible." I had convinced myself that it would happen at night, cuz jesus would probably show up in Jerusalem during the day and I lived in California.

I also happened to live near the train tracks when i first moved out, so at roughly 1am every night i would have a small moment of panic as my room shook and an all-encompassing trumpet announced the arrival of either The End Of Everything I Knew And Loved or the same freight train that goes by every single night.

...needless to say i might have some minor anxiety issues

So I read up on the 70s shoujo anime/manga,Candy Candy. And found out why we'll probably never get anymore content for the series. The artist was selling Candy Candy merchandise without the writer's permission. Which resulted in a huge ass lawsuit. So we'll most likely never even get the anime/manga licensed over here,let alone a remake. *long sigh* But Discotek is licensing Lady Georgie and Kaitou Saint Tail,and we're getting a new Hana no ko Lunlun donghua,so we're being fed!

I don't understand why people get so bent out of shape about betrayus betraying Elli they act like it's out of character for him yet when it's very in character for Betrayus to betray someone. It's been showing time and time again to betrayus is manipulative he'll use a sad story to get what he wants,conniving, cruel. he doesn't care about anyone but himself he will continue to use people until they're no longer useful to him.

In the episode Easter Egg Island

Betrayus is shown figure out when he should betray Pac-Man and his friends before or after they save everyone. He even says after being insulted you are so getting betrayed.

That's what bias does, unfortunately.

From what I've observed, a lot of people latch onto his past and use it as a means to 'prove' that Betrayus is a victim and therefore should A) be pardoned of all wrongdoing and B) be seen as a character who will stop being evil the moment he gets true 'affection.'

But just like you've mentioned, he's proven enough times that he doesn't care about anyone but himself and would only use people to his own advantage. Any deals or 'relationships' he forms would only be made if he can somehow twist them to benefit himself. Hence he betrayed his own niece.

We see parts of his past sprinkled throughout the show, and I think that some fans thought that all Betrayus needs is family or true affection and then he'll turn over a new leaf. But once the final episode aired, the headcanon/ideas that they'd been building up for two seasons came crushing down when it's proven that Betrayus was willing to betray his niece, his own blood.

Elli has never met him before and therefore she was a 'clean slate' for him to feed his sad story to. It worked, she believed him, but the moment she figured out his true intentions, Betrayus dropped his facade and (quite gleefully) turned against her and was willing to let her drop into lava and die. It showed that he only told her his sad story in order to manipulate her feelings. This is the same dude who told the Ghost Gang to execute the Pac trio (literal teens) in the second episode. So really it's not out of character for him at all.

That being said, I think it's safe to say that those kinds of Betrayus-fans are in the minority at least. Most of the Betrayus-fans I know and follow are nice people who do not condone his actions and agree that his bad actions shouldn't be justified. The comments on this post can attest to that.

Lots of fans have also created AU's or have their own takes on the war and Betrayus's character, and that's okay as long as it's not actively excusing irredeemable behaviour.

We can all at least agree that canon Betrayus is far from ever being a nice guy :)
