Never did you imagine catching the Huā Chéng’s attention nor having his good graces.

You are nothing but a simple god in the heavens. Nothing highly praised, but important enough to be recognized and worshiped.

Of course you kept your meetings a secret and you enjoyed every small moment you had with him, after all, he is a very busy man, one of the four calamities in the ghost realm. You understand the workload.

You love him though with all his perfect and imperfections.

But…

You noticed a change as of late, and it all started when crown prince Xiè Lián arrived in the heavens for the third time apparently.

You knew very little of him initially, but you gathered the opinions of others due to the nasty things that were spewed from one mouth to another.

Obviously this wouldn’t do, so you opted to help him with the case in Mount Yujun, and you weren’t alone. Two “junior” officials also join you as well, and though they’re incredibly amusing, they’re also a headache as usual.

Anyways. While on this mission Xiè Lián was anything but what was being said in the heavens by the other gods. He’s incredibly humble, kind, has strong morals, and is charitable. A perfect friend to have in your life.

You don’t pry into his history, and you can tell he’s appreciative of that.

Once the mission is over with you come to your own conclusion and don’t regret it. You planned to even come visit him and help him out at his shrine until that familiar presence has you frozen in place.

What is Huā Chéng doing here..?

You left before you could be detected, fleeing back to your little palace and drowning yourself in your duties while unwillingly being stuck in your thoughts as well.

As days go by you note that when your beloved finally comes to you, it’s after his highness returns from another mission…

Huā Chéng is overwhelmed with emotions, that much is obvious when he grabs you so tight, his body tense and shoulders trembling just faintly.

His turmoil distracts you from your unsteady heart and you offer to remedy his burdens by being the one to lovingly service him.

But he turns your offer down.

Instead he resorts to his usual, just putting you on your hands and knees and then making you ride him with your back facing him when he grows tired of doing the work.

You’ve… Never had too much of a problem with this, the positions always hitting you deeply in those special, toe curling spots, and honestly he fucks you dumb to the point you got no thoughts.

But this didn’t soothe your paranoia, and you weren’t sure how to bring it up to him.

So you resort to soothing yourself.

‘It’s just insecurity. I’m just blowing it out of proportion.. Huā Chéng loves me.’

It only works for so long.

After that night Huā Chéng became distant again and soon did the unthinkable.

He snatched Xiè Lián from his palace where he was made to be confined in, and made a nice little show about it in the communication array.

You were dazed and hurt, not sure what his plans were and why he’s so infatuated with Xiè Lián. You weren’t sure if he wanted to hurt him or…

Or…

Your chest is heavy, but you push through and go with Fēng Xìn and Mù Qíng to find the runaway duo.

In the end, you wished to have just stayed tucked away in your palace, distracting yourself with your work for a moment longer than seeing this .

There’s many.. Many statues of Xiè Lián, all depicting a specific moment in his and Huā Chéng’s lifetime, or just because Huā Chéng wants another beautiful image of the crown prince.

It’s sick and painful. Your body trembling and your mind sinking deeper and deeper into the abyss that’s your proven thoughts.

Some can say it’s romantic.. Other can say it’s creepy. Pick your poison. But you felt humiliated above all else. It makes you question whether your relationship was even real this entire time.

When Huā Chéng makes his sudden appearance, he doesn’t even look ashamed, his attention and concern solely on Xiè Lián.

When you finally managed to leave Ghost City, like usual, you locked yourself away and finally exploded, taking your anger out on some of your furniture before sobbing on the cold floor, nothing but the shadows on the wall to comfort you in your grief.

All along Huā Chéng has been devoted to and in love with Xiè Lián.

The times you’ve had sex you’re sure he’s imagined him in your place.

In the meantime you were just something to keep him occupied until he had his chance.

You felt used and foolish and you had a tidal wave of resentment for Huā Chéng at his callousness.

And unfortunately you couldn’t help but have a little resentment for Xiè Lián…

You only distanced yourself from him and his party of growing allies, ignoring the hurt in his eyes when you brush him off, and ignoring him when he came to your palace asking for you and checking on you.

Your bitterness was just too immense.

You assume that no one knows still about you and your one sided relationship with Huā Chéng, otherwise you’re sure your doors would’ve been blown open and you’d be dragged into court for an interrogation by now.

Huā Chéng has yet to face you, and it hurts, but you’re not surprised either. You’re sure you’re not going to get an apology either.

Love truly can be a curse…

But for now you’ll let yourself mourn and stew in your anger. You’ll throw a small pity party for yourself and be a little destructive.

alright, I'm going to start a new post because I'd really like to continue this discussion but my post about the contrasts between Jun Wu and Hua Cheng that started it all has been getting too long to keep adding to it. me and @illuminatedferret were discussing whether or not Jun Wu knows Hua Cheng and Wuming are the same person. I'm also going to tag @csilla-nocturine because you had also commented with similar points but I forgot to tag you yesterday, I'm sorry T_T. this was my response to both of your very interesting points on my last reblog on the original post, which I've copied over to this post:

First of, I think Hua Cheng being right there ready to voice his own feelings on the matter wouldn’t take away from Jun Wu's satisfaction in reminding Xie Lian of what he almost did while at his lowest - and what happened to Wuming as a consequence of that. In fact, Hua Cheng revealing then and there that he is Wuming might have played right into that - regardless of Hua Cheng stating that it's an honor for him to die for Xie Lian and that he never blamed him and so on - Xie Lian would still feel like he's caused his beloved's second death. like you said though, interpreting that scene precisely is difficult!

the second thing is that if Jun Wu has no idea who Hua Cheng is and thinks he and Xie Lian have basically just met, it doesn't really make sense to me that he'd immediately and repeatedly try to separate them, the specific ways he goes about doing that, and that he'd call Hua Cheng "a very faithful believer" of Xie Lian's, as he'd have no evidence that Hua Cheng sees Xie Lian as his god and worships him as he knows Wuming did:

"Do you know who that ghost was?" White No-Face asked.

"A... A soul of someone who died on the battlefield?" Xie Lian tried.

"Yes," White-No Face replied. "But he was also your very last believer in this world. And now, he's no more. [...] Oh yes, that's right. This wasn't the first time you've met him," White No-Face continued. [...] "That ghost had been following you for a while. At first, I thought he was simply deeply resentful, so I caught and interrogated him; his answers were quite interesting. The Zhongyuan Festival. A night of lanterns. A wandering ghost fire. Do you remember? [...] In life, he was a soldier under your command," White No-Face lazily hinted. "In death, his soul followed you, turned into a wrath ghost because you were pierced by a hundred swords. And now, his soul has been obliterated because you unleashed the plague of Human Face Disease."

Xie Lian seemed to vaguely recall something, but he hadn't even seen his believer's face, he didn't even know his name - what could he recall?

Those are some good points! I could definitely attribute the kinda weird feeling of the dialogue to Jun Wu being increasingly unbalanced and desperate, rather than him not knowing about Wuming. First of, I want to thank you both for being so interested in my original post and taking the time to write down and share your arguments! like I said in my initial response, I can see both your lines of reasoning as well :) for me though, there's too many scenes throughout the whole novel that either hint at Jun Wu knowing or that don't make sense to me if he doesn't. Like the Cave of Ten Thousand Gods... isn't that actually more evidence that he knows Hua Cheng is Wuming? Because from the above quote I included, Jun Wu knows exactly where Wuming had met Xie Lian before, which are also things Hua Cheng depicted in the murals in the cave. Now, the murals were covered by butterfly silk, but iirc it's not clear if they always were or if Hua Cheng just ordered the silk to cover them once Xie Lian, Mu Qing, and Feng Xin started to investigate the cave. in any case, they tear it down. plus, in addition to the murals, the statues depict Xie Lian in situations that would also match what Jun Wu "interrogated" out of Wuming. Even if we assume (which personally I don't) that Jun Wu didn't know before this point, I can't imagine him seeing all of that and not realizing that Hua Cheng is Wuming, not with everything he already knew about the latter.

also... the irony of Jun Wu knowing all this but not Xie Lian. and not just that, from the fact that Xie Lian wasn't aware of any of this until he lands in the caves, Jun Wu also knows that Hua Cheng has not told Xie Lian any of this, even with how much time they've been spending together, because Hua Cheng either doesn't want or doesn't dare to tell him - the latter being correct, as we know:

"San Lang, what kind of person is your special someone? Why haven't you won them over yet?"

[...] "It's alright if gege finds it funny," Hua Cheng replied. "But, truth is, I'm afraid. [...] That person saw me at my worst." (Vol 4, page 181).

also, from certain murals and/or statues that are implied or outright stated to depict things of a more sexual nature, he would know that Hua Cheng not only worships but desires Xie Lian - information he then tries to use to, again, drive a wedge between them and provoke Hua Cheng into hurting Xie Lian, like when he disguises himself as Mu Qing and Feng Xin:

"Hua Cheng! What do you think you're doing to his Highness?! You're disgusting! [...] Keep your filthy hands off him. Does the ugly toad want a taste of swan meat?" Mu Qing sneered. "Never mind dreaming of it for eight hundred years - you can hope for a thousand more, but don't even think of touching a single one of His Highness's fingers!"

Xie Lian's heart dropped. But while the comments annoyed him, he could sense that something was amiss.

What was wrong with those two? [...] It seemed that they were purposefully trying to provoke Hua Cheng. But there was no reason for that; they knew they couldn't beat him, so what did they want? Moreover, their tone subtly pointed the spear in Xie Lian's direction. It was like they wanted to stir up confusion - as though they wanted Hua Cheng to do something to Xie Lian in a fit of anger.

Hua Cheng has been dreaming about being with Xie Lian for eight hundred years - so this barb feels way too pointed and knowledgeable for Jun Wu to just randomly be accusing him of this, especially with this exact number.

This has gotten quite long again, so I'm gonna cut myself off here (I could talk about this topic for hours as you can surely tell by now, I think it's super fascinating). feel free to reply to this post/reblog with a response, but I also completely get if you're not as into this discussion and want to be done with it by now, no hard feelings! also, if we have to agree to disagree after all, that's also fine, and I'll thank you both again for your interest :)

okay one last thing I swear - since this was all spawned by comparing and contrasting Jun Wu and Hua Cheng, I also just realized how poetic it is that to Jun Wu, Mount Tonglu is where he releases all his hate, whereas Hua Cheng literally carved out a place there where he pours out all his love. damn do I love this novel

Hello! I'm from a West European country and have been interested in learning about Chinese culture for the past few months, specially it's religions and traditional clothing, since I started reading different lgbt Chinese novels and series,like Word of honor and Tgcf, and listening to YouTubers like Xiran Jay Zhao.

I find it fascinating the difference of styles between dynasties and places, and the way it differs or reminds me of my culture. The revival that traditional clothing has had in this last few years has also deeply interested me. But there's something I'm kind of confused about.

I know that hanfu refers to traditional han clothing, and that the hanfu revival occurring is about that, but has this also affected in any shape or form the traditional clothing of other Chinese ethnic groups? By that I mean if they have also gained popularity in Chinese society or could even be included in this hanfu revival movement. What about their traditions?

And to all this, are there any works about them that could be read by English or Spanish speakers? I know there are so many different ethnic groups in the country to just be treated as one lump, but even if they talk about a specific one it would be nice to read about them.

One of the reasons that inspired the hanfu revival movement back then was a picture of a Han Chinese wearing a white t-shirt among all other ethnic groups in their colourful ethnic clothing. So no, other Chinese ethnic groups aren't included in the hanfu revival movement because they weren't prosecuted under the Tifayifu ('shaving hair and changing costume') policy, so there isn't really a need to revival because they have always been able to dress in their ethnic garments.

However, the garments of all ethnic groups are threatened by mass-produced costume-type things. Properly crafted traditional wears are often expensive on Taobao, so if they have moved away to the cities it is very difficult to get authentic garments in more reasonable price unless they travelled back to their home town. In addition, homogenization occurs because of commercialization, such as the Josean wear is heavily influence by Korean Hanbok because Hanbok is more readily available.

And to all this, are there any works about them that could be read by English or Spanish speakers? I know there are so many different ethnic groups in the country to just be treated as one lump, but even if they talk about a specific one it would be nice to read about them.

I am sorry I am not familiar with English or Spanish works... I am not even good at finding resources in Chinese. Perhaps you could check out @beehunni62 and @audreydoeskaren. @rongzhi also posted a lot of douyins of different ethnic groups under #少数民族. Not sure if @ziseviolet knows more about this.

If you want to try random things with him. You do need to convince him a little. He thinks some things are lame. But then he sees your excited face and he reckons that if it makes you happy then it's worth the try.

He can surprise you at times too! With a bit of help from his trusty f-friends (and surprisingly enough Hua cheng and Pei ming), He prepares a night out doing the things you love and going on sappy romantic dates.

(He won't admit it but he got emotional when you saw me before you. You saw him tear up at the end of the movie)

When it comes to kissing he can be a bit hesitant at first. But when he gets more confident his kisses are direct and passionate. They make you know how much he loves you and wants you.

He generally holds his liquor but when he gets drunk you've never seen him more clingy. It's crazy he won't let go of you and he only wants cuddles and lowly rambles on how you are so beautiful and how thankful he is to be with you.

As cold as he can be and as hard as it is to get him to open up to you and get him to talk about what bothers him to you, you have to keep trying because deep down this little boy just wants to be understood and to be listened to without judgment. So when you see him obviously upset at something, sit him down get him to relax and talk to you.

Although I prefer darker and smuttier works, I absolutely love Tgcf which has a very sweet friends-to-lovers slowburn. Tgcf has a vast world building and in-depth character study. You could say it also deals with sexual repression. I love how the main couple protects each other throughout the story.

Top to bottom, it's vol. 1 of the Global Examination manhua, a vol. of Daomu Biji, I Ship My Rival x Me, the TGCF revision (wanting that like whoa is what triggered all this), Those Years in Quest of Honor Mine, Mo Du, Little Mushroom, The Fourteenth Year of Chenghua, and the Global Examination special edition (I had. No idea this one would be this big. Oops.)

There are so many extras. So many. I laid everything out on my bed last night and in my head I just kinda flopped mentally atop it all and basked like a content cat, lmao.

All this adds to my existing collection (SVSSS in traditional, MDZS vol. 1 to 3 in traditional, TGCF vol. 1 to 4 in traditional, Thousand Autumns, Golden Stage, Guardian, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, TGCF manhua vol. 1 and 2, and The Husky and His White Cat Shizun vol. 1 to 3).

Anyway, now goals are to REALLY step up getting "reading ready" on my studying. Part of why I got I Ship My Rival x Me (...outside of "the manhua releases too slow and I want to know what happens") is I thought something modern and fluffy would hopefully be a bit simpler for me to read? And it's also a lot shorter than the others. So, after I read all the manhua (I'm way behind on posting TGCF vol. 1 cause this summer is kicking my ass, but I've read about half of it) I'm gonna sit my ass down with ISMM and see if just maybe I can't make my way through an actual damn book, and then if I can, use the vocabulary building that'll surely result in to springboard me into some other book (I'd been thinking Thousand Autumns but after seeing that post about "distinct character usage" stats for cnovels, uh, maybe not Thousand Autumns lmao, idk, I could try Fourteenth Year of Chenghua, that might be a "simpler" choice for historical vocabulary building but their both Meng Xi Shi so they might both be hard...maybe I should just do TGCF, heck knows I know the story which always helps...sorry, I'm just babbling cause I'm excited about my books and procrastinating taking a shower 🤣🤣🤣)

Today I turn 34!

My 30s really have been better than my 20s, so far. Hopefully that trend continues for the upcoming year!

I took today off so I could have a 3 day weekend, and I'm going on a quick solo road trip to Big Bear (mountain area of SoCal) to celebrate 😊 Even though it might be rainy tomorrow, hopefully I can come back with photos to share!

My blaze post finished last night and I got the "Blaze Report" after I went to bed.

Yes, while some people assumed I paid for the $10 version, I actually paid for the $25 version, which estimates 7k impressions, so I'm surprised I got over 9k [insert meme here].

These stats don't line up with the notes on the actual post, which is curious. It has 40 comments (including 3 of my own), 184 reblogs and 356 likes. I'm guessing the difference comes from users who saw the reblogs and not the original sponsored post? Getting only 580 notes with 9k impressions is a little disappointing but that's tumblr for you

Anyway, that was super fun! I think I might try again sometime, but maybe with something less likely to have people curse at me lmao

I posted about this earlier today (thanks @tenacioustam and @lib for responding and helping me pick!) but I finally changed my url!

In case you missed it, brillemos means "let's shine" in Spanish! And is also a pun on my name, Bri, because I'm a cringe dork and proud of it 😎

I saved alivorte as a side blog and wrote a little JavaScript that will auto-redirect to my new url, even if you're just looking at a singular post, it will redirect to that post. BUT, it only works on desktop. I don't know how to make it work on mobile and I'm not particularly motivated to try. Sorry mobile-using followers 😅

I'm registered for the Lesbians Who Tech Pride Summit this year and I recall that you went to the same event before (or something that sounded very, very similar to it). Do you have any tips to get the most out of it? I am still very much a tech newbie who wants to break into tech and the agenda looks a bit overwhelming. Thanks in advance if you have time to answer this ask! If not, it's okay...you sharing your career journey on tumblr has been inspiring, to say the least!

Aww thanks! I did go to Lesbians Who Tech back in 2018 when I was still in grad school. I think I also signed up for the virtual pride summit this year as well, though I probably won't be able to attend (work kinda gets in the way lol).

The biggest regret I have about when I attended in 2018 was being too shy to try to connect with other people there. I think that's probably the biggest benefit to attending events like this in the first place - networking. Which I've never been particularly good at, lol. So if possible, I'd recommend targeting sessions about networking or allow you to network.

Otherwise, as a tech newbie, you likely won't get much benefit from the more technical sessions, unless you already have some prior exposure to the topic or it's marketed as a beginner friendly session (like I found one called Intro to Native Mobile Development on Tuesday, if that suits your fancy). So I'd have some fun with it, look for ones that sound interesting to you! Or check out sessions in a variety of different areas of tech (coding, analytics, product mangement, etc) so you get a wider exposure to the tech world. I feel a little overwhelmed myself looking at how many sessions there are lol so I don't think I can give more specific advice than this, unfortunately.

I’m gonna be real I don’t have any event planned for 100 followers lol, sorry y’all. I feel like its been no time since 50 I swear.

But I do have this... (edit: this is long, didn’t mean it to be, I don’t even know where I was going with this when I wrote it, lets call it a brain dump)

Life has a funny way of doing things when it comes to how I apply my emotions to my writing...

Even though its 90% done, there's a portion of a scene in A Memory is Not Enough that I've been putting off. For many different reasons.

It's gonna be very rhetorically challenging.

...and also I just finished reading a really long book (tgcf) so I'm just chasing the dopamine and I didn't wanna write 🤷‍♀️

But suddenly last night I had a dream about suddenly seeing my dad again.

It's been 6 months since he passed.

In the dream I was screaming and crying telling him to help me make sure I wasn't dreaming. To do anything. Hit me, kick me, push me to the ground. None of this is something my dad would ever do, but I wanted to feel pain because in my eyes the pain would make me wake up if I was indeed dreaming.

Last night I learned pain doesn't make you wake up from a dream.

...or at least perceived pain in your dream doesn't.

Because at one point I had been kicked to the ground and I thought I had proven whatever I was in was not a dream. My life had been lying to me. My dad was alive and I had confirmed it wasn’t a dream... or thought I did.

Except when I looked up I saw my mom as well and something clicked. This February mom will have been dead for 3 years. So that’s when I woke up.

...

Something you've lost in your life will always make its way into your dreams if you miss it enough. And there's no sure way to test if you're dreaming or not...

...except when you naturally wake up.

Well... I think I just found out how I'm gonna write that once scene I’ve been putting off.

And I'm sorry in advance, but I think grief is such a powerful emotion. Its the only emotion I have never been able to control or fully mask. I can only funnel it into my writing.

And I like to watch my readers SQIRM 

I like to see you all comment and tell me you cried or screamed or wished for a different ending or really ANY comment at all.

I feel like I can show a bit of what I'm feeling using the characters that we all love. Because when someone loses someone there’s no such thing as true empathy. No one will ever really KNOW how I feel.

But if I kill a character we love using what grief I have, a lot of us will feel the same... or at least similar.

And since I can't FORCE anyone to read my stories, I feel like the people that do make me feel... heard. And in turn I like hearing from YOU ALL. Which sounds cheesy as fuck but I don't have a better word for it.

So... as I didn’t intend to write this massive text post, all I gotta say is...

least favorite character:     You know, good question. This is one of those books where I like...don’t have clear dislikes? Like I don’t dislike a singular character in this whole thing completely (not even Bai Wuxiang, who, In his Calamity Form, I honestly view as more of a symbol than a character at times). Honestly I think all of them are...kind of fine tbh. But if I really had to, I guess...I’m not particularly fond of Rong Guang? I understand the narratives but I also like...am kind of shrug about him in general? Also man’s super noisy (and not even in the Qi Rong way) so like...ehhhhh.

an unpopular opinion:     I don’t know if I have an unpopular opinion about T.GCF. Uh, well, I guess I could reveal that I’m a Heartless Bitch and the Black Water Arc Angst....didn’t do much to me emotionally oops. Like I wasn’t spoiled or anything really, so the twist was like, A Good Plot Twist, but other than that I like...was like “rip” and not much else hhhh. Mostly I was shook by how much of a madlad He Xuan is lmao  Like my man literally pOPPED SHI WUDU’S HEAD OFF LIKE HE’S A LEGO MAN. I also? Don’t? Really? Ship? B.eefleaf? my canon otp:     Hualian takes the cake sorry. There’s just. I don’t think I’ve seen a more wholesome ship in my entire life. They hit me in all the right places and I cry and conjure up brainrot about them...daily. Every night I go to bed with hualian brainrot and wake up with hualian brainrot.

my non-canon otp:     A good question? I’m still, like, sticking my feelers out into this fandom re: ships that Aren’t Canon or at least very popularly adjacent to canon. I wouldn’t say I feel super strongly about any of them yet, they’re just, all floating about somewhere.

most badass character:     Probably I have to give this one to Hua Cheng. He threw down against 33 gods and w o n and also jjokes around while he duels Junwu, come on - it doesn’t really get More Badass Than That : ‘ D

pairing i am not a fan of:     Quanyin? Is that the ship name? Sorry, as mentioned...somewhere else, I’m Incapable of seeing Quan Yizhen as anything other than a Fluffy Child. They can be bros shhh. Also some people out there in the great wide world ship Lang Qianqiu w/ Qi Rong, which is just......extremely counter-intuitive to me, but like, you do you I guess???

character i feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another):     I don’t think this is a character so much as it is a plot arc but while I’m on the Lang Qianqiu kick: they absolutely under-used him, like he was there for 1/4 of an arc and then he was gone lmao. Same w/ the sub-arc w/ Jian Lan and Cuo Cuo’s accusing a guy who killed them (cause like...it’s not Mu Qing, obviously hhh). Like, I could not discern why these things were in the book except for...plot device, and neither was really...resolved? I also do wish we’d gotten a lot more of Hua Cheng’s backstory pre-Xie Lian + pre-soldier + post dissipating as Wu Ming. in text. I understand that it wasn’t like...like, there wasn’t necessarily a good place to put it, but I would’ve liked an extra or two.
