there’s something really poetic about how gene is a medic that saves other people but he needs someone to save him. the way gene was internalizing all of his pain and kept it all inside because he knew he needed to be strong for the other men and couldn’t lose his shit. the way babe notices this and refuses to let gene do this. babe starts getting food for him and starts looking out for him. and of course gene doesn’t want the attention at first, he can’t get close to anyone—he’s a medic. but babe is a stubborn bastard if anything and he’s persistent and he’s so so nice but then julian happens. and gene watches how the talkative and happy babe goes from that to something sadder and refuses to let that happen. gene knows he’ll do anything to put that smile back on his face, he gets him chocolate and makes sure he eats it. and then reńee dies but gene has babe now, and babe is there for him—he always will be. the way the both of them just wanna give give and give to each other and would do anything to help each other. the way they love each other with everything inside of them.

One thing I find interesting is the duality Zayne brings out in me...

Like part of me wants to be his pretty little housewife. Making him lunches to take to work with cute notes about how much I love him. Waiting eagerly for him to get off work so we can spend a quiet evening together. So, like. Had more time to ruminate on it. And Across the Spiderverse is what a story about a super-powered kid should be. It’s a story about this kid who wants to be a hero more than anything. He is a hero. But he’s a kid too. And he says, “Why can’t I save everyone?” Why can’t he? What is the point of being a hero if you don’t try to save everyone. And then movie sits you (the audience) down and spells it out: you see all these kids? Yeah, they’ve LOST the people they love. It’s a sacrifice for being this way. *shrugs* That’s just how it is, kid. And we can’t change it because we lost that fight already.

And Miles. Oh man, this kid. He’s says, “Fuck that. I write MY story and no one else.” And then he’s an anomaly and he wasn’t even supposed to BE the hero.

And you stop. And you think. That’s the point. It doesn’t matter whether or not you’re supposed to be the hero. You choose it. It’s not destiny. It doesn’t matter if the spider bit you or someone else. What matters is that you’re a kid and you’re gonna save the people you love no matter what because that’s what you choose to believe in.

Idk, man. Maybe stories about heroes should be more about hope and love and defying expectation and less about the tragedy of giving up everything for the sake of the world. Maybe some times you DO save everyone. You know, as a treat.
