Heavy Heads and Heavy Hearts | Quinn Hughes
Tumblr media
Summary: Quinn gets injured as a game. His girlfriend takes him and cares for him.
Pairings: Quinn Hughes x Fem!Reader
Warnings: Anxiety, Head injury, food, angst, mentions of vomiting (no actual vomiting)
Notes: Hi guyss! Hope everyone is doing ok! Injured Quinn got the most votes, so here we are! This one is the longest one ive done so far, I definitely did not mean for it to be as long as it is but here we are. Also, im not a professionl in any way, so i cant say this is concussion accurate. I just went off of my experience in dealing with athletes that have Concussions, and my own Concussions lol. Anywaysss I hope yall enjoy. Love Soph.
---
There was something so gut-wrenching about watching the man you love get injured. One second, Quinn was cutting quickly around the back of the net, and the next, he was getting slammed into the boards hard. It was nothing. You get hit, you get up, and you keep going. It was simply a part of hockey.
Except this time, Quinn wasn't getting up. He wasn't moving at all. You stand up, heart in your throat. The room feels like it's tilting. The sharp shrill of the refs whistle cut through the air, stopping the play as the refs skate over to where Quinn is lying motionless on the ice.
They are calling for medics. Your head is spinning with the worst possible scenarios as you excuse yourself from your seat and practically sprint to the locker room. One of the security members holds out a hand to stop you.
"Ma'am, you can't be here, please exit this area"
Great. Just fucking great. This is exactly what you need right now. The overwhelming need that aches in your bones demanding to know that Quinn is ok makes you want to cry. Because now this fucker won't let you through. And you're nearly too panicked to do anything about it.
The logical route would be pulling out Quinns wallet, that has his ID in it, and explaining that you are his girlfriend. But with your anxiety high, and your heart in your throat logic is not the first thing on your mind.
"Listen buddy," you start, ready to absolutely rip this guy a new one. Thankfully for him, one of the trainers who knows you happens to be exiting the locker room.
"Let her through, Jace, that's Hughes' girl" he says, waving you forward. The security guard- Jace apparently, lets you pass with a grumble.
By the time you get rink side, Quinn is (half) conscious- thank God, and being half carried off the ice by Petey and Boeser. He's transfered to the care of two medics, who sit him on a bench and begin to check him over.
One of them is asking him questions gently, both to keep him awake and assess the damage to his head. While the other stabilizes his neck. "Can you tell me your full name and today's date?" One of the medics asks.
"Quintin Jerome Hughes," he slurs, eyes fluttering, "its Feb'uary... twenty-second, twenty-twenty-four"
Your breath hitches. He got the date wrong. You can't help the panic that rushes through you. "Good job Quinn, do you know where you are?"
"Van, Roger's arena," he mumbles, "playing hockey"
"Good," the medic hums. "we need to take off your equipment to make sure you aren't injured anywhere else. Is that ok?"
"Y/n" he mumbles, eyes closing and head tilting forward, his head snapped back up a moment later, and if the other medic hadn't had his head stabilized he would probably have mild whiplash.
"Stay awake for us, Quinn. Is Y/n someone you'd like us to call?"
You spring forward at the mention of your name, "I'm here," you say, pushing past a couple of people who are standing around, ready to assist if the situation gets worse.
"My girl" Quinn slurs, his lips tilting into a small smile. Your heart flutters at that. In the midst of his delirium, he still cares about you dearly.
"Hello Y/n, I'm Sam," the guy who's been asking him questions, "and that's Kieran," he says, nudging his head towards Kieran, who gives a small smile.
"Do you think you could help us remove his equipment?"
"Yes absolutely, just tell me what to do" you say, glad that you can help.
"Can you remove his jersey and shoulder pads? Kieran needs to keep his neck stable, and I need to check for any other possible injuries. And keep him talking"
"Yeah, of course," you start by bending his elbow to slide it out of the sleeve of his jersey.
"Hey Quinny" you say softly, sliding his other arm out of his jersey "you played really really good today, I'm so proud of you"
"Thanks baby," he murmers, "glad you're here." He tries to lean his head against your chest, he huffs when Kieran doesn't let him, and you can't help but let out a breathy laugh, patting his head lovingly.
Kieran tilts his head to one side, allowing you to pull the jersey over his head. You deposit it in his cubby behind him and make quick work undoing his shoulder pads and pulling them off gently.
"I'm glad I'm here too. What do you wanna eat when we get home?"
Sam gently asks you to move out of the way so he can check Quinns upper body for injuries. The second you aren't doing something, the anxiety rises back to your chest. You take a deep breath and begin to unlace his skates. You pull them off, slipping a pair of slides on his feet so his socks don't get wet.
"Hmm" he hums in thought "potatos...?"
You laugh, "Alright Quinny. We'll have potatos"
Finally after palpating his whole body to make sure he doesn't have any other major injuries, testing his reflexes, and asking him a bunch more questions. They diagnose him with a minor concussion, and give you a list of things to look out for.
They deem it safe enough to leave you alone with him for a little bit and tell you to change him into something more comfortable. It takes a bit of work to take off his hockey pants and shinguards and get him into a pair of sweats and a hoodie.
By the time you're done, the equipment manager and the medics have collected the rest of his equipment. After making sure his hockey bag is fully packed with everything, you grab his keys from your purse, while the EM helps you bring his bag to his car, and the medic helps you half carry him down.
He can mostly walk on his own, but better safe than sorry. On the ride home he keeps his head resting against the window, a cool compress is wrapped around his neck, and he's holding one over his eyes with one hand, while the other holds yours tightly.
You trace your thumb over the backs of his knuckles soothingly and keep him talking the whole way home. "What kind of potatoes do you want when we get home, Hon?"
"Can I change my mind?" He asks sheepishly. He's still talking very quietly and slurring his words a little, but the medics said that was nothing to worry about unless he started getting worse. So far, it was nothing to worry about.
"Of course my love, anything you want" you bring your intertwined hands to rest on your chest. It's a comforting weight over your heart, that you didn't know you needed until it was there.
Your phone lights up from the cup holder, it's a text from Petey, saying that the Canucks won the game. There are a few other texts, from his parents and brothers. You make a mental note to reply to them as soon as you get Quinn settled at home.
"Can we have noodles?" He mumbles.
"Yes, of course, love." You can't help but kiss the back of his knuckles. Watching Quinn get injured to the point of losing consciousness was not something you ever wanted to experience ever again.
"Your boys won, by the way," you say softly.
"The did?!" Quinns head shoots up front the window, and he is filled with instant regret as a sharp twinge shoots down his neck and to his shoulder.
"Ow fuck" he mumbles, laying his head back against the cool window.
"Careful love," you gasp, squeezing his hand.
"I know, I'm sorry," he mumbles, squeezing your hand back. You sigh, you have been on edge since he got injured, and it didn't look like the anxiety would dissipate for a while. You would just have to deal with it and try not to be an over bearing worry wart.
"You guys won 5-2" you smile, finally pulling into your apartment parking lot.
"I didn't do much except get my brains knocked around" he grumbles. "Some captain I am"
You scoff, flicking him in the nose lightly. "Don't sell yourself short, Quinny. Three of those points are yours."
Quinn wrinkles his nose and leans forward to bite your finger. You yelp, snatching it away with a glare. He sticks his tongue out at you, and you laugh, your chest feeling a little lighter than before.
"Come on, let's get you upstairs. " You say, undoing your seat belt and getting out of the car. You run around to his passenger side and open the door for him, and help him step out of the car. He throws an arm over your shoulder, and you wrap one around his waist. He's not as wobbly on his feet as he was earlier, but he still isn't at full strength.
Quinn squeezes his eyes shut and tucks his face against your hair. The florescent elevator lights were not pleasant in his state. "Can we keep the apartment lights off?" He mumbles against your hair.
"Sure love," you said rubbing your hand up and down his back soothingly, "we're almost home," you fish the keys out of your purse and unlock it. You toe your shoes off at the door while Quinn slips his off easily and you guide him to the couch.
"What do you want first, baby? Food or a shower?"
"I'm not really hungry" Quinn mumbles, laying on the couch and adjusting the ice pack under his neck. You sit on the couch handle, stroking his hair back from his forehead. "I know honey, but we should try to get something light in your system, if you're feeling upto it."
Quinn sighs. He knows you're right. "I can make you toast? Or a sandwich or something?" You offer, smoothing your thumb over his hairline.
"Do we have bagles?" He asks
"Yeah, we have bagles, I'll make you one of those?"
"Yes please," he mumbles, you plant a kiss on his forehead and go pop a bagle into the toaster, "can you do it with cream cheese and jam?" He asks, chewing on his lip nervously.
"Sure, Hon, I'm gonna make myself some tea. Do you want a cup?" You ask as you pull the cream cheese and jam out of the fridge.
"No thanks, I'm ok" he mumbles. After his bagle is done being made, you help ease him into sitting position, and sit next to him with your cup of tea. He eats a bit more than half the bagle, and you finish off the rest before deeming it time to shower.
You remember all the messages from his family, and quickly shoot them texts, saying that he's ok and you just got home and you'll talk more when he gets settled.
"I'm gonna put these back in the freezer while we shower, yeah?"
Quinn nods, handing the ice packs to you to put in the freezer. You help him up slowly and lead him to the bathroom. You keep the lights off and leave the door open so you have a little bit of light from the bedroom.
While the shower warms up, you grab a clean change  of clothes for both you and Quinn and set them on the counter before helping Quinn strip. He has to brace an arm against the wall while you hold him steady with one hand and maneuver his clothes off with the other.
"I'm sorry," he murmers against your hair as you help him step into the shower.
"Oh Quinn, there's nothing to be sorry for," you say, sitting him on the shower seat.
"I'm sorry you have to take care of me like this." He huffs, resting his head against the cool Ike of the shower wall, "I feel so pathetic, " his voice cracks, and your heart nearly breaks.
"Quinn, my love, taking care of you is not a burden. It's a pleasure. I love you to the ends of the earth, and I would do anything for you, my sweets. " You kiss him on the forehead sweetly as if to prove your point.
He doesn't say much about it after that, but you can tell he still feels bad. You make quick work of washing his hair, being very careful of where a small bump has formed on his head. You scrub him down and rinse him off before shutting off the water.
You wrap a towel around yourself and then dry Quinn off gently before helping him change into his pajamas. "Let me change and then dry your hair a little bit before we have to put an ice pack on your head, ok?"
Quinn nods. He sits on the counter, leaning against the wall while you change into your pajamas. You plug in the hair dryer and dry his hair, keeping his head steady with one hand. As soon as his hair is no longer soaking wet, you help him off the bathroom counter and into bed. You grab the ice packs from the freezer and help him position them on his head and neck until he's comfortable.
"I'll be back in less than ten minutes, baby. I'm just going to grab your stuff from the car, ok?" You say pulling on a pair of sweats and a hoodie over your pajamas.
"Ok" Quinn mumbles, "I'll call if anything" he says patting his nightstand to make sure his phone is there.
You kiss him on the forehead and pull the bedroom door halfway closed so the light from the hall isn't too bright. Grabbing his car keys and your phone from the counter, you hit the call button on Ellen's contact as you slip out the door.
She picks up on the first ring "Hows he doing?" She asks immediately. She sounds distressed, maybe like she's been crying. You don't blame her. They probably haven't heard anything unless someone on the team contacted them, and you have no idea how bad it looked on TV.
"He's ok, Mrs. H, it's a mild concussion. His symptoms aren't worsening at all, and they said with some rest he'll be significantly better by tomorrow"
Her sigh of relief was unmatched. "He'll be out of play for a couple of weeks, but they just want to make sure he's back to 100% before he's playing again." The elevator finally opens, and you hit the button for the parking garage.
"Thank you so much, Y/n, im glad you're there with him. I know he's in good hands. I'll leave you be love, Jack and luke are super super anxious and would appreciate a call from you. Text me if anything happens."
"I will, Mrs. H, tell Mr. H I say hi"
"I will dear, thanks for taking care of our boy"
"Of course El, he's my boy too," you smile.
You swear you can hear Ellen smile over the phone. "We love you dear, I'll talk to you tomorrow ok. Don't forget to take care of yourself too"
"I will, I love you guys too. I'll text you updates"
"Alright, bye dear."
"Bye," you sigh, pressing the end call button, just as the elevator opens to the parking garage. As you press the button to open the trunk, you call Jack.
"Y/n,"  he huffs out, not even after a full ring. "How's Quinn? If he ok? What happened?"  Before you can answer any of Jacks questions, Luke's voice cuts him off, "is Quinn ok? Are you guys at the hospital? It looked really bad -"
Before their panicked tangents can get worse, you interrupt them both. "Take a breath, you two," you say calmly, breathing exaggeratedly so they can copy you "in and out, relax. Quinn is ok. He's ok"
"He's ok?"
"He's ok" you repeat. You feel the tears start to build, and your voice cracks "He's ok"
"Oh Y/n." Jack says softly.
"It's ok, I'm ok" you say, more to yourself than to Jack as you wipe the tears away. "Hold on, gimme one sec." You say, setting down your phone as you pull Quinn's hockey bag out the car. You close the trunk, make sure the car is locked and head back to the elevator.
"Hi, sorry I'm back. I was just grabbing Quinn's stuff out the car."
"Can you tell us what happened?"  Luke asks softly.
"He's got a concussion, and he's a bit bruised up, but other than that he's alright"
"Fuck, how bad is it?" Jack asks, the fear is evident in his voice, and you can't blame him. Concussions can be really bad sometimes.
"They said its a mild concussion, he's not throwing up at all, his memory is ok, he didn't injure his spine or anything, he'll be ok after a few days of rest. He probably wont be playing for a few weeks, but better safe than sorry."
"Oh thank God"  both Jack and Luke huffed "isn't he not supposed to sleep for 24 hours after or something?" Luke asks.
You shake your head with a small smile "Thats a myth, Lukey. As long as I check on him every few hours its ok for him to sleep."
"Ohh, ok. Well that's good" Luke says.
"We are glad he has you Y/n, thank you for taking care of our brother."
"Always" you say softly.
"We'll let you go now, keep us updated?"
"I will, Jackie. You two get some rest, you have a big game tomorrow, love you guys"
"We love you too Y/n/n" both boys say, hanging up.
You sigh, leaving his bag at the door. "Y/n?" Quinns weak voice calls out from the bedroom. You rush to him immediately, scared that something is wrong.
"Yes, Quinny, I'm right here" you say kneeling beside the bed, and stroking his hair.
"You took long," he mumbles, pressing his lips against your wrist.
"I'm sorry love, I'm here now," you stand, stripping the hoodie and sweats off and climbing into bed next to him. You stay a little distance away, not wanting to hurt Quinn. But he grumbles at you, tugging on your shirt to get you to come closer. Normally, he would just grab you and pull you closer, but he's still weak.
"I don't wanna hurt you" you mumble, scooting closer so that you are tucked against his side. He tangles your legs together and rests his head against yours.
"Never" he says, pressing his lips to the side of your head. You rest one of your hands on his hip, under his shirt, stroking your thumb over his hip bone.
"How you feeling?" You ask softly.
"Beat" he mumbles "thanks for taking care of me"
"I'll take care of you for as long as you let me love" you say, pressing a gentle kiss to the underside of his jaw.
"Forever?"
"Forever."

So. Having a brain MRI the day before election day was *not exactly relaxing* BUT my results are *back*. And totally, completely, deliciously-boringly *normal*. *Good News*!! We're now firmly back to "your bod freaked out, have some weed" (and thank you @aliform for that perfect summary) & oh yes will I ever be relying heavily on that recommended CBD oil today.

S/O Loses Memory and Quirk
Todoroki, Bakugou, and Kirishima HCs
Genre: Angst
Warnings: Language, violence, mentions of stab wounds and blood, a panic attack, spoiler for Bakugou’s hero name, sad bois
A/N: So I had two requests that mentioned these three with this concept and I just finished all of them and I’m so proud that I wanted to post these ones before the other two for Denki and All Might were finished but I’ll get those out as soon as possible. I cried writing Bakugou’s, so... there’s that HAHA please enjoy!
Here’s the first one with Shinsou, Aizawa, Hawks, and Dabi!
Tumblr media
Todoroki Shouto | Shouto
Shouto knows you’re a strong woman and that he doesn’t need to constantly be there to protect you
But he does prefer to be there if something bad is happening
The only problem is that you two went to two different agencies after graduating
And in doing so were on opposite sides of the city
Now he always knew when something was happening on your hero route because I mean
He actually needs to in case something bad happens since it’s his JOB
But he also just really wants to be there for you if you really need it
There hasn’t been a time like that, though
So imagine his utter shock and genuine fear when that time came
He was told to go to where you were patrolling because you’d been attacked and wound up in the hospital
You know the scene with the flame tear? Yeah that but times ten
He goes on patrol like a good little hero
But boy oh BOY did he just want to go to the hospital
You’d never lost a fight before
Not even against him
Your quirk was literally the most powerful quirk he’s ever seen and I mean like, yeah, sure, he might be biased but STILL you were really powerful
So what kind of villain could hurt you so bad you had to go to the hospital???
Luckily, he only had an hour left of patrolling
And as soon as that hour was up
Mans bolted
He was OFF
He ran into that hospital
And he politely asked where your room was
Because although he’s PANICKING he still is a little socially awkward sweetie and he doesn’t wanna be a dick to anyone and be labeled similar to his father no no NO
But as soon as he got the number he was sprinting man
He was so worried
All patrol he was quieter than usual
And he was ridiculously anxious the whole time
His palms were sweaty
He felt like he could throw up at any second
And right now
He thought his heart was about to beat out of his chest
He carefully opens the door
You might be sleeping, he has to be considerate
And sure enough he sees your unconscious form laying in a hospital bed
It looked like you had some broken bones, and multiple bruises and cuts which means someone must have beat the shit out of you
Lovely
That’s what he needed to see
Definitely
Mans doesn’t show emotion that much
But when it comes to you and since it was just you and him in the room
He broke down crying
He couldn’t help it
He grabbed your hand
And just sat there crying
Poor guy can’t lose you
You were the best thing that ever happened to him 🥺
You showed him that it was okay to feel things and express those things and let people in
He let you in and he couldn’t let you go now
He was a genuine mess for the next couple of weeks
Because you weren’t waking up
He went against what Midoriya said and asked around about what happened to you
And what he heard was horrific
Apparently the villain snuck up on you
And hit you in a few different places
And then you fell down
And then you couldn’t access your quirk
And that’s why you were in the hospital
He didn’t want to think about the part that happened after you were virtually defenseless
Around his friends he was spacier than usual
He wasn’t really retaining information
And his agency let him take more days off than usual because they knew he was Going Through It
And luckily on one of those days you woke up
He was next to you as per usual
Holding your hand
Playing with your fingers like he always does when he gets anxious
He missed being able to do that in social situations
Or when you two were cuddling at night and he was thinking about something that was stressing him out and he would start to fiddle with your hand and you would ask him what’s wrong
He missed you
So when he felt your hand start to move by itself
He basically gave himself whiplash with how fast he looked from your hand to your face
Sure enough
Your eyes were open
And you were looking at him
“(Y/n)…”
He whispered your name as not to scare you
You could have a concussion or mild amnesia
He has already considered everything that could be wrong with you
Because he overthinks a lot
And he was nervous about this
And there was one thing he had in the back of his mind
That would probably be the worst case scenario
And much to his fears
That was confirmed to be what was going on almost immediately
“Todoroki?”
He just stares for a moment
You hadn’t called him Todoroki since… well, a long time now
Probably back in your UA days
The two of you began dating in your second year though so
It’s been a while
“You look… older..?”
He clears his throat
Nodding
“Yes. Well… I am 20 years old now. I would hope I look older.”
“Wait, what?”
Oh shit.
He just confused you.
Damnit, Shouto.
“Uhh… well, um. You see…”
“Todoroki what is going on? And why are you holding my hand like that?”
He freezes
He was still playing with your fingers
And it wasn’t that you didn’t want him to
You were just genuinely confused
He knew that
“Before I say anything else that could be detrimental to your mental health, maybe you should ring your nurse.”
You do as he says
And the nurses and a doctor come rushing into your room
They do some evaluations
And sure enough
Your memory has been completely wiped
As has the access to the portion of your brain that allows you to control your quirk
The doctor explains to Todoroki that he’s unsure of how this happened
Bu Todoroki knows it has to be that villain
Whatever that villain did did this to you
And Todoroki isn’t one to show emotions
But boy oh BOY was he riled up right now
He lowkey accidentally caught something on fire
And then to fix it lowkey on purpose just turned it into a block of ice
Even though Endeavor is the worst man on the planet
Mans is persistent on shit that’s for sure
And that’s like
The only trait Shouto got from that literal dumpster fire of a father
And he wasn’t about to let the piece of shit that hurt you get away with it
Of course, when it comes to you as a person he’s very patient
Very understanding
Respects boundaries
But he will not REST
Until the motherfucker who did this to you gets caught by him
And he will find them.
Tumblr media
Bakugou Katsuki | DynaMight
OH BOY HERE WE GO
So Bakugou was already very protective over you
I mean that’s expected though
It’s
It’s literally Bakugou
So mans has tabs on you at all times
You don’t know how he does it tbh
He jokes
Yes, Bakugou can joke
He jokes about having a sixth sense when it comes to you
He just gets this feeling about you
If you’re sad? He knows
Happy? He knows
In danger? MANS KNOWS
And I guess he also has a GPS built into his brain???
He just
He knows
Probably because he cares extremely deeply about you
Like really fucking deeply
You’re the best thing that has ever happened to him
Ever since high school
First day
When you weren’t intimidated by him
There was just something special about you
And even though it took until after graduation and you almost DYING on a mission for him to finally accept that he can FEEL THINGS
He officially asked you to be his girlfriend
I say officially because, well
Y’all have basically been dating since like
Second year of high school
Even though it wasn’t official
It was obvious
He was whipped
He still is
He’s known you for five years
You’ve been officially dating for two of those years
You were unofficially dating for four
You were the most important thing in his life
You even surpassed becoming the number one hero somehow
Though he will NEVER admit that
EVER
It took him a while to realize it
But the thought of living without you?
Scared him more than any villain ever could
And that is why
Mans is all dressed up
Lookin nice
Took a day off of patrol at his agency because tonight is a special night
Of course, you don’t know anything
As it should be
He didn’t tell a soul that he was planning on proposing tonight
Okay… maybe that is a lie
He told Kirishima when he got blackout drunk with the boys one night
Long story, don’t ask how it happened, even the boys don’t know
And Kirishima then proceeded to tell everyone of his other friends
So they all knew
But they also all knew to keep it a FUCKING SECRET unless they wanted blown up
But boy oh boy they were excited to see the pictures and the ring and the everything
But I digress
Bakugou is in the house the two of you purchased a while back
It was very much off the damn grid
For ~safety~
And he’s very much just messing with how he looks
He has to look perfect because he knows you’re about to
And he can’t be proposing to you unless he’s on your level
When suddenly
He gets a
Feeling
But it isn’t the warm feeling he gets when you’re happy
Or the doopy one he gets when you’re sad
Or the wave of exhaustion he feels when you’re tired
Or the tingly feeling he gets when you’re mad
No
It’s the feeling where his spine tenses
And his blood goes cold
And his heart drops to the floor
The one he only felt one other time
The time you almost died
He was out of that house so fast
He didn’t even care if he looked all nice
You were in danger
He blasted his way through the city
Saying he was frantic is an understatement
He was FERAL
He got to where you were just in time to see you get slammed into the concrete by some piece of shit villain
You were unconscious
And you weren’t moving
He saw red
He didn’t even remember blasting over to the villain and punching them in the face
But he did that
And he did it HARD
Of course the villain was like OH FUCK
THIS IS THE NUMBER TWO HERO
I DIDN’T THINK HE’D ACTUALLY GET HERE THIS FAST
Because obviously the villain knew who you were
That’s why you were targeted
Breaking Bakugou’s spirit is needed if villains want to become more fearful and powerful
The villain starts sprinting away
And before Bakugou can catch them
He hears an ambulance siren
He suddenly forgets all about the villain because he whips around to see you getting loaded onto a gurney
Paramedics are doing everything they can to keep you alive at this point
He’s horrified to say the least
You’re the love of his life
The last time he saw you like this is when he accepted it
Seeing you like this again just makes him realize it even deeper somehow
He runs to the ambulance
But the paramedics tell him he needs to go to the hospital separately because you’re badly injured and they need to perform some procedures on the way to the hospital to keep you alive
He doesn’t even realize he’s crying until his eyes start to sting
He wants to tell the paramedics to fuck off
Don’t they realize this is supposed to be one of the best days of yours and his lives?
But he can’t
Because before he can
They’re gone
He chases after you though
He needs to be by your side right now
He needs to know that you will be okay
He needs you to be okay
So imagine how nerve-wracking it is for him to learn that you were in surgery
He waited in the waiting room all day long
This incident happened around one in the afternoon
and it was now one in the morning
He was just sitting in the hospital waiting room
Looking down at the little box in his hand
Crying
Which is a sight for anyone who sees him
The ring he bought for you is the only thing he can focus on
He doesn’t even notice the non-stop buzzing in his pocket coming from his and your friends wondering if the two of you are okay because the footage of the fight cut out right before Bakugou punched the villain
They all thought you were both hurt pretty badly
I mean after your quirk was seemingly taken from you…
The only thing that snaps him out of his trance
Is when the doctor comes out and says his name
His head snaps up so fast
He approaches the doctor just as fast
He knows he should expect the worst
But he can’t help but keep repeating that you’re okay
That everything will be fine because you are okay
They fixed you up
You’ll come home all happy
He’ll propose to you in the living room at this point
Today will be fixed
Instead
He hears that although you’re stable
You have what appears to be brain damage
“What kind of fucking brain damage?”
“She has severe amnesia which means that-”
“How severe?”
“Well… according to her brain scan and the fact that she said the year was two and a half years ago, I’m afraid it’s significantly severe.”
Two and a half years
Two and a half years?!
He just stares at the doctor
If you think it’s two and a half years ago
That means he hasn’t asked you out yet
That means in your mind
You’re still in high school
About to graduate
This cannot be happening
There is not way this is happening
“Can I see her?”
His voice sounds foreign to him
The doctor nods
Leading him to your room
He puts the ring back in his pocket out of instinct
And when he enters your room
He wants nothing more than for you to yell something like PSYCH
GOT YOU BLASTY BITCH
HAHAHA
But he’s just met with a your mouth opening wide and eye getting big
“Bakugou?! You’re so dressed up!”
Bakugou
Why didn’t he let you call him Katsuki sooner
Why didn’t he ask you out before two years ago
Why wasn’t he there to save you
“W-Woah… Bakugou, you don’t have to cry this isn’t my first hospital stay… wait, when did you get an undercut?”
He just walks towards you
“You also look… older… is this seriously what you look like when you clean up?”
He watches as your expression falters for a moment
“Wait… are you like… going on a date or something?”
Good to know you still have feelings for him at least
He just nods
And you try to hide the disappointment on your face
“Oh… well, you better tell me all about it when we get back to the dorms.”
Your fake enthusiasm is killing him
What killing him even more though is that the doctors didn’t tell you what was going on
So he’ll tell you instead
“Actually,”
Damnit
His voice is wavering
This is new for him
He clears his throat
“I’m not… I’m not going on a date anymore. I had one but… things didn’t turn out as planned.”
“Oh?”
He almost smiles at the sudden mood shift you had
How can you still be perky like that sitting in a hospital bed
“Yeah… because, um. It was a date with you…”
“…Oh…?”
“You got hurt pretty bad, angel…”
He explains everything to you
Well
As much as he can
And he also finds out about your quirk
And how it’s just
Gone
You have to stay in the hospital tonight for further testing tomorrow
And you insist that he goes home
But he says it isn’t home if you’re not there
He stays in the chair right next to your bed
Watching you as you sleep
He knows you believe him
He knows that you have feeling for him
But he’s broken, truly
Not only was he not your hero today
He didn’t save you
He doesn’t know if you’ll ever remember any of those years with him
Any of your firsts
And that makes him ache
He pulls out your ring again
And just looks at it
The only light in the room is the moonlight peaking in through the window
And in that moment
He swears to himself
And to you
That the villain who did this
Is going to pay
Tumblr media
Kirishima Eijirou | Red Riot
Eijirou has always been your rock
Figuratively and literally
He’s there for you through everything
And I mean everything
The two of you have been next door neighbors since you were kids
And he literally always had a crush on you
Of course the feelings were mutual
But neither you nor shark boy knew that
Until y’all got to high school
And Bakugou was very
Annoyed
About the two of you pining for each other
Mina was beyond annoyed
She went to middle school with you two
So when Bakugou finally just
Screamed at the two of you to just shut the fuck up with the flirting and date already
Mina deadass jumped out of her seat at lunch and screamed thank you at the top of her lungs
Of course the two of you were as red as his hair
Which, yes
You did help him pick out the exact shade and helped dye as well
His hands were stained red because he accidentally only bought one pair of gloves and it wouldn’t have been manly to make you help without gloves on
But I digress
The two of you started dating shortly after that
And when I tell you that you were the couple everyone would look at and be all “awwwww”
I MEAN IT
And y’all are just in high school
Granted, it’s your final year and the two of you are both interning and are already confirmed to become sidekicks and Fatgum’s Agency
So y’all do be a little mature
But still
You started dating freshman year
And you’re going strong still
Of course
And words cannot describe how relieved he is that the two of you are at the same agency
Because if anything ever went bad he would be there to save you
And you would be there to save him
But literally nothing could prepare him for what was about to happen to you
It was a normal patrol
The two of you were together
Talking about graduation next week
And how the two of you were excited to move out of the dorms and into the apartment you had picked
And how you would finally be able to adopt the little mutt that the two of you love from the shelter
When out of no where
A villain popped down off of a building
Right behind you
And did something weird to you
They hit you meticulously and in specific places
Before Kirishima could even process what was going on
You were on the ground
Of course
You raised an arm
Ready to fight and use your quirk
But nothing happened
You tried again
Nothing
You and Kirishima make eye contact and he can feel the fear radiating off of you
Now he was worried
Very worried
But you knew how to fight
And he was there, too
So this wouldn’t end too bad
UNTIL THERE WAS A FUCKING EXPLOSION IN THE BUILDING THE VILLAIN JUST POPPED OUT OF
You were already back on your feet
Ready to fight this motherfucker
“Go help the people inside, Red Riot. I can handle this one.”
“But-”
“GO!”
He goes
Reluctantly
But he does know you can hold your own
Even if that villain temporarily blocked your quirk
He hardens
Turning his headpiece into a filtering mask (a great addition he thought of so he could run into burning buildings while hardened to save people and not take damage to his lungs in the process)
And luckily
There were only three people inside
So he grabs them and runs out
Easy
And he’s expecting to be met with you handcuffing the bad guy
But instead
He’s met with you getting the life beat out of you
Literally
You’re on the ground
The villain pulled out swords while he was gone
And it was obvious you were down and weren’t gettingup
But the villain just wasn’t letting up
Kirishima’s legs work before his brain
He runs over to the villain and lands a punch to their face
Which causes them to stumble backwards
Before they throw the swords at a random citizen who is observing
He immediately runs to the citizen, deflecting the swords
But the villain ran off in the mean time
Like they disappeared without a trace
But honestly
Even if they were still there
Kirishima would have run to you regardless
He immediately kneels down
“(Y/n)?! (Y/n), can you hear me?!”
He ditched the hero names this time
You weren’t responding
You were out cold
He starts panicking
Like
Full on hyperventilating
You looked bad
You were pierced by the villains swords in your side
Blood was everywhere
Your breathing was shallow
Regardless of the genuine panic attack he was going through right now
He somehow managed to control his breathing so you wouldn’t bleed out on the ground
He needed to help you
He picks you up
Instantly starting to sprint to the ambulances beginning to pull up
As soon as the paramedics see the state you’re in they get you off of him
And speed off to the hospital
Kirishima is left alone
Staring at his hands
Which were dyed red with your blood
All he could see was your face laughing at him because he forgot to get two pairs of gloves the first time you helped him dye his hair
…He didn’t like red all that much right now
After what feels like hours
But was really like two minutes
Tamaki shows up
Because he heard there was something going on
And as soon as he sees Kirishima on the ground and sobbing
He knows something bad has happened to you
He quickly gets him out of there
And back to the agency
Where Kirishima accidentally sees a replay of the fight on television
And he sees that you were fighting the villain just fine
But they were so nimble and fast
And all they did was hit the nape of your neck and then the side of your temple
And you collapsed
Tamaki turned the television off before the full fight was shown
But the damage was done
Kirishima was back on the ground
Tamaki tries to comfort him
But Kirishima is out of commission
“I couldn’t save her, Tamaki! I wasn’t there!”
“…C-Come on, Kirishima… w-we should… go to the hospital…”
Tamaki is trying so hard to get him to calm down
But to no avail
So eventually he just drags him out and to his car
He speeds to the hospital
And Kirishima doesn’t even wait for the car to slow down to run inside
He has to wait to see you
Since you were punctured
But he was willing to wait
And wait he did
For four days
Of course after you were done with your surgery he was allowed in your room
But it was a matter of waiting for you to wake up
He was always with you
He only went home to shower
He slept at the hospital
He needed to be with you
So when you finally woke up
He cried tears of happiness for the first time in days
“(Y/n), thank god you’re awake.”
“Eiji? What happened…?”
“There was a villain attack and they knocked you out and-”
“Why don’t you look 15?”
“What?”
“You look… older… and your hair is longer.”
“…What? You were the one who encouraged me to grow it out…”
“I… I was?”
He stares at you for a moment
His happy tears turning into ones of fear
Before hitting the call nurse button and asking you a question
“(Y/n) what grade are we in?”
“We’re freshmen at UA High School.”
No.
No, no, no, no, no
Before he could answer the doctor and nurses came in the room
They started asking you a bunch of questions
To which you answered the best you could
But it was obvious that you were convinced it was two years ago
The doctors took you off to do scans of your brain
This can’t be happening
You think it’s two years ago
Two years
So much has happened within those two years
The two of you have done so much
Just
Imagine how devastated he is when he hears your memory is just gone
And your quirk with it
You were a hero
Your quirk can’t be gone
“Eiji… please don’t cry, it’ll be okay.”
“I can’t help it, pebble. I wasn’t there to save you and now… now you don’t remember everything we’ve done. And… and your quirk… you’re the best hero I know, and now…”
“Eijirou, I promise you it will be okay. As long as you’ll be with me, like you always are, I will be fine.”
He doesn’t say anything
He just looks at his hand holding yours
At least you still remember he asked you to be his girlfriend
But he is deadset on finding the villain who did this to you
“I will get you out of this.”
“Ei…”
“I will fix this. I promise you. I will save you. I need to.”

Febuwhump Day 16
Prompt: Broken bones
Warnings: some parts are a bit graphic!
Read on AO3
Care, Trust, and the Force (of course)
The battle was going quite well until Anakin managed to fall off a cliff. It was a rather tall cliff, which is probably why he heard a chorus of yelling from his men as he slipped over the edge and began to plummet to the rocky terrain below, but luckily, Anakin had the quick thinking to use the Force to push himself to a small ledge. Only a few meters down.
Still, he lands hard, his body slamming like a rag doll into the cliffside. He manages to roll, but not before a loud cracking sound rings out like a cannon shot, and Anakin cries out.
Oh boy, I've done it now, he thinks as he lies haphazardly on his side. His arm is tucked underneath him, but he can feel his hand against his elbow of the same arm-- that is definitely not the direction his arm should be. Anakin squeezes his eyes shut, tears soaking through as the sharp pain pulsates up his arm. He hasn't felt this kind of pain in a long time, and the adrenaline of his fall is making it hard to connect to the Force to suppress it. So he lays for a moment, breathing heavily and slowly to try and calm himself down.
I need to get help. Call Obi-Wan... Commlink! He suddenly remembers it on his uninjured arm and raises it to his lips.
"Obi-Wan, come in," he says, his voice tight with pain.
"Anakin? What's wrong?" he replies immediately, the echo of blaster fire in the background.
"I fell... Pretty bad."
A pause. The sound of droids getting absolutely obliterated. Obi-Wan is back, his voice low and calm. His sick voice, Anakin recognizes. Whenever he was ill as a padawan, Obi-Wan's voice would get really quiet and really calm, halfway between a constant lullaby and the tempo of a mind-healer. Like it did back then, it immediately soothes him. It'll be okay. Obi-Wan will help. "Okay, Anakin, turn on your tracking beacon and I'll come get you."
"Okay, Master," he swallows thickly.
"Anakin?"
"Yes?"
"Can you tell me how bad it is? What is hurt?"
He does a quick assessment. He doesn't think he hurt anything else too bad. Maybe a mild concussion from the whiplash of landing so abruptly, and definitely some cuts and bruises pretty much everywhere. But the arm... that's what has his stomach turning.
"Broken arm. Bad broken." The kind with the bone sticking out. He nearly vomits at the thought.
Anakin was eight when he watched the owner of his good friend barge into their lunchtime and begin to beat him. The slaver was convinced Jas had stolen from him, though Anakin had watched a traveler steal the compressor bolt when he came over to pick up his friend. Trying to defend him only earned Anakin a blow to the side of the head that had the world spinning, and he laid on the ground and watched helplessly as the owner took Jas's arm and snapped it in two. His friend screamed, so loud others ran into the shop. They only watched as he collapsed, squirming in the sand as it quickly turned red around him. Someone had the sense to pick him up and throw him into the street. Yelled at him to go back to work. When he showed up back at Watto's, unable to go two minutes without sobbing, Watto had a rare moment of mercy and let him go early.
Anakin dreamed about the incident that night and many nights after. Dreamed about the stark white bones sticking out of his friend's arm. Pointed, like they'd been sharpened like a blade.
He learned the next day that the way the bones broke severed his vessels. Jas bled out on the floor of his master's shop, and his master kept the stain there as long as it remained to warn others of the consequences of stealing. Ever since Anakin hasn't been very good about broken bones.
Obi-Wan knows this. "Alright," he says, even softer. "I'm coming, Anakin."
He lowers his arm back onto his hip, realizing his entire body is quivering. Anakin feels like a kid again. A padawan. A slave on Tatooine. Anything but a Jedi Knight in the middle of battle. But he doesn't care right now. He's in too much pain to fight, too far down to Force-leap back up even if he had the strength to manage it. He would need a proper evac, but his energy is waning and he just wants to sleep it off.
"No time for sleep, young one." Obi-Wan's voice surprises him, and he nearly jumps up at the sound. He hadn't heard him jump from atop the cliff or land next to him.
"Obi-Wan," he says tearfully, curling in on himself even more.
His former master approaches him slowly, his eyes scanning over him with an emotionless expression. It must be bad, he isn't saying anything... Finally, he kneels next to him, placing a hand softly on his shoulder.
"Alright, we're going to sit you up."
"But my arm--"
"I know. Trust me. You don't have to look, but I need to check it."
He nods, biting on the skin of his cheek. Obi-Wan helps him roll to a sitting position, positioning him so he's sitting with his back against the cliffside. He immediately shuts his eyes, turning his head in the opposite direction. He will take no chances of having to see such a gruesome sight. But he can feel Obi-Wan doing the usual checks. Ribs, brushing dust off his cheek, straightening his legs out. It's methodical, soothing. It takes his mind off the pain that continues to radiate up his arm and shoulder.
"Anakin," he finally says. "Open your eyes."
Panic surges through him.
"Master, no, you know I can't."
"I know you're afraid--"
"I can't."
A hand on his cheek. Another on his shoulder. "Trust me. It's not what you think."
Feelings of calm and peace are being filtered through the Force, and Anakin fights back the sob and slowly opens his eyes. He sees the horizon first, the side of the planet not affected by the war because it's too mountainous. Slowly, as slow as he can, he pans toward Obi-Wan, who kneels at his side, looking at him with clear eyes and a slight smile.
"It hurts," he says, deliberately keeping his arm out of his peripheral.
"I know, but it will hurt less once you look."
Well, that doesn't make sense! But Obi-Wan's eyes are saying trust me, and so he does. Anakin looks down at his arm, expecting the worst, but rather than a mangled mess of bone blood, and skin, he sees an entanglement of metal and wires, his prosthetic half torn off. He blinks, stupefied.
"But... but it hurts," he says as he reaches over timidly to feel the edges of the durasteel that have snapped clean off. The stump of his arm is tender, and a little beat up, but otherwise uninjured. "Why does it hurt?"
Obi-Wan slides over to his side, sitting next to him with his back against the cliff. "You haven't had this long. Your brain needs more time to remember there isn't an arm there anymore," he carefully pushes aside the broken prosthetic on the hinge it now has, placing his own arm underneath so that at his perspective it sorta looks like he has a real, flesh forearm and hand there. "Flex your fingers on the other hand," he says, and as Anakin does, Obi-Wan mirrors him. Shockingly, the pain fades, becoming more of a dull ache from landing hard on the rock than the horrible agony of a broken arm. "See?"
He feels dumb now. His tears of pain become tears of shame, and he pulls his arm away, dragging the prosthetic across Obi-Wan's lap. "I'm sorry," he mutters.
"For what?"
"I pulled you out of battle! Acted like a little kid and I'm not even that hurt!"
"Anakin," he says softly, still in that damned sick voice. "The pain was real. It was going to feel real until you could see it was not, and I knew you weren't going to look," he looks down at the ground. "Understandably so. There was little I could do to help you on Geonosis, so I am happy to be here to help you now."
He looks him through his teary vision. He never blamed Obi-Wan for his arm, but he suddenly realizes maybe Obi-Wan blames himself.
Losing his arm was a shock, but Padmé has helped him a lot with accepting it as it is. Technology is so good the only thing he's really lost are the more sensitive aspects of his sense of touch, but he still has his other hand for such things. Sometimes he even forgets he has the thing... obviously. But did notice that Obi-Wan always seemed wary of the thing. For a while he thought he was disgusted by it or something but... if he felt guilty for some reason...
They sit in silence for a long moment. Long enough that two comms with nonurgent codes come into Obi-Wan's commlink but he silences them.
"How did you know that would help?" he asks when his tears finally dry up and they hear the distant sound of gunships overpowering the little blaster fire that remains.
"Research. I wanted to know what to possibly expect after you got your prosthesis. How to get you back to as normal as possible as quickly as possible," he says softly, looking off into the distance as though he's embarrassed. But it makes Anakin smile and a feeling of warmth. He can just imagine him spending hours in the archives trying to make heads or tails of medical literature. Force forbid, he may have even gone to the Halls of Healing to ask for advice, which is unheard of for him to do on his own fruition. It's all just... the most Obi-Wan thing he's ever heard.
"Well... thank you, Master. Really," he says. The rattle of an approaching gunship comes from around the corner of the cliff. Rex stands in the open end, pointing in their direction. "I'll try not to forget I already lost this hand next time."
A chuckle. Obi-Wan jumps to his feet while rolling his eyes. He holds out his hand to help Anakin up as well. "I do hope there won't be a next time."

Sorry I've been missing in action.
Long story short I got very injured at the labs, but I've been making a fast recovery. For the more detailed, graphic version, you can read below. Warning: Mention of hospital, blood, car accident.
As I mentioned, I got really injured at work beginning on February 21 at around 9 PM. It was during a routine check at some of the sites, one in particular needed our higher clearance because there had been a breach at a fence that past week, so I, and two other guards went to check out any tampering of the fence again. They say it might be vandals but a lot of them say it was some kind of large animal. The road to those sites are a single path through the woods, lit with a few lights, no curves, just a flat road with a hill on one side. It hadn't snowed that week either, so no fear of ice or anything. It was just a routine jeep trek.
It happened so fast. Our vehicle was knocked over, I'm not even sure how, but we were rolling in the dark down a hill, hitting trees. I remember the shouting, holding fast, and the glass. I remember crawling toward a tree and trying to sit up against it or maybe I was put there by the other guard, Dolores, I remember her telling me to stay awake. I asked her if I was dreaming. It didn't feel real. I asked what was happening to me because I couldn't move right, everything felt so slow and muffled. I passed out by the time they got us into the medical ward. I don't remember them putting me in a gown or putting in an IV. I woke up later, I buzzed the call button out of fear and pain. My whole left side was throbbing. A nurse was relieved I finally came to. She gave me pain meds and called the doctor in.
I was told there had been an accident, that much I already knew, but no one was killed, just injured. I lost a lot of blood, my uniform was soaked in it and they had to cut it off me. Part of the metal from the door frame folded in and pieced my left shoulder and I had minor cuts on my hands and arms from the glass. My blood pressure dropped so low they were scared my heart might've stopped. I was given blood, hooked up to a lot of things and I would have to stay under watch for a few days. There was a lot of tests they needed to do to figure out just how bad my injuries were.
For the next few days I was just sleeping, I couldn't sit up without feeling dizzy. I had to lay semi flat, my blood pressure was still very low. My left side was still throbbing and the stitches itched. A lot of bruises developed from being tossed around like I was, mostly on my arms because I was shielding my face and head. My minor glass cuts stung while batheing. Nurses came in every few hours to check my vitals, help me use the restroom, shower, help me eat, ect. I got so tired from the smallest things. I couldn't call anyone, my phone was in my locker. I finally got someone to help me call my brother to tell him what happened. My brother was naturally scared, he thought something happened to me and he was sad to know he was right. He wanted to see me, but he couldn't, I was in the medical ward on lab property. He wanted to call our mom to tell her but I told him to wait, there was a possibility that I might be transferred to a local hospital where they can visit me, and I didn't want her panicking and trying to drive up here in bad weather. It's best she waited til things cleared up.
After the first week I was transferred to a local hospital after getting a bunch of tests done. No brain trauma, no broken bones, no blood sugar issues or thyroid problems. I could sit up in bed by then and eat on my own. I still couldn't walk very well without feeling really dizzy, again, low blood pressure. A lot of minor bruises were fading away. I never had my anemia officially confirmed, but they confirmed it and had me take daily iron and placed on a blood building diet in the new hospital. I was tested for covid, I came out clear.
My brother and mom visited me daily, and the other doctor said I was recovering really quickly, that gave us a lot of hope. I could be out of there by a few days, though my blood pressure was worrying her. Seems it wasn't so much the blood loss, but that it might have been an underlying condition already linked to my untreated anemia. She would get the in-house dietitian to include a bit more natural sea salt to my iron rich diet, as well as tell me what I should eat at home and that I need to drink a lot more water than I normally did. This is a problem I've had for awhile, I forget to drink enough water. The doctor warned me I better remedy that immediately especially with low BP. My mom was already taking notes. She really wanted to just take me home already. I really liked her being there, I'm not that shy about my body, but I honestly felt better having my mom bathe me and comb my hair instead of strangers doing that. She was also a lot more gentle around my stitches and bruises.
Eventually I did come home, I still needed a lot of rest and help getting out of bed. I had to fight the urge to clean house, help with groceries, ect. I'm so used to being self sufficient. I felt so frustrated that just walking around the room would tire me out, when I'd hike for miles just a few months ago. I was tired of sleeping and sitting down. But there wasn't much else I could do. I did a lot of origami, my bro got me a coloring book, I watched a lot of movies, took my iron -which is nasty btw-, ate meals that were saltier than I normally would prepare but my taste buds would have to adjust. I was happy my new diet included a lot of fish though.
I did have some close calls. I really thought I could stand up in the shower instead of sitting, and wound up calling for my mom to help me up after collapsing. I collapsed again when I was trying to cook dinner for myself. My face, according to my mom, was drained of color and my breathing was shallow. I felt so dizzy and nauseated. She nearly wanted to call the hospital again. My bro said I was pushing myself too hard and I always had a problem with not asking for help. That I needed to learn to stop being so damn stubborn and rest. To anyone else, that sounds harsh, but he knows me way too well, probably better than our mom. I do have that problem, I do push myself too much. After that, I decided to be more patient with myself. I was sick and might be sick for awhile.
This week I'm doing a lot better. I can do my daily things now, I even went to get groceries and take a little walk to the river. But I can't over do it, I can't stand up or walk for too long, and I can't lift anything heavy, otherwise I get bouts of dizziness and need to sit down. The pain isn't as bad on my back anymore though it's still very sore, my arms, especially my left side, have a dull pain. I can't sleep on my back and left side, only my right and on my stomach. A lot of the cuts on the back of my arms and hands have scabbed over, minor bruises are gone but major ones on my shoulder and neck are still pretty dark and tender. I'm still finding glue spots on my chest and stomach from the medical tape and the EKG patches they put on me, but a bit of lotion is taking it off. My stitching, according to my mom, is definitely going to leave a pretty bad scar above my shoulder blade, but it's fine. My body has a lot of scars here and there from close calls, but I consider them ' Marks of Life'. They're proof I survived and thrived.
It'll take time for me to really feel like I'm back to normal. My mom refuses to go back home until I make a full recovery. She hasn't tended to me like this for a long time, mainly because I rarely get sick. I trait from my dad's side. We don't get colds or flus for years, no history of cancer, heart issues or diabetes, and his family usually remain active to their elderly years, not to mention our graceful aging. My dad used to say it was our native blood, we're just built tougher. The only thing that could kill us is getting injured like this. God, he'd be so worried about me though. I remember how he'd fuss over me when I skinned my knee as a child or got my allergies. If he was alive, he'd probably refuse to let me do anything out of bed, but then that's exactly what I should be doing anyway.
I got a report on the other guards health yesterday. Dolores and Elijah. She was the least hurt out of all of us, just a dislocated arm, mild whiplash, and some really bad glass cuts on her chest and arms, she's home recovering with her husband and kids. Elijah was the driver and got knocked unconscious with a bad concussion, his entire left arm was sliced by glass and metal, he lost a lot of blood like me and is recovering just as slow as I am. He opted to stay in the lab medical ward because he doubts his roommate can care for him at home, he's on a lot of pain meds, so he sounded distant on the phone. I think out of all of us, he's going to take the most time to recover. I told him I'd pray for him and if he wants, I can visit. He appreciated that a lot. I thanked Dolores for helping us that night, she was the one trying her best to keep us alive and sent the distress signal on our ARK devices so they could find us in the dark. Without her, I think we would've bled to death.
God, it feels like a distant nightmare. I still can't figure out how we were knocked off the road like that. Something hit us out there and it was strong. I felt the impact in the backseat, but I didn't see it. Dolores says it looked like a bear, but bears aren't that strong. Eli says he saw horns, so maybe a bison. Bison are that strong, especially against a little jeep. The incident is still under investigation. The lab is also very concerned about how this happened. It's possible the same thing that hit us, has been tampering with the fence.
One less thing to worry about is the hospital bill, the accident happened on lab grounds, everything is taken care of through them, probably because they don't want to get sued. They are giving us another two weeks before we report back in to the doctor for another round of tests and physical tests, as well as check to see if my stitches were still secure. Our return to work solely depends on our results, we may not be able to come back until late April. They really want to be sure we're okay. Because I'm an 'Ophanim' aka Tier 3 guard, I'll also be given a mental test before being hooked back into Selene. They just want to be sure there's no cognition issues and I can sync properly to her. I may have to do a refresher since I've been away for so long, but I'll worry about that when it comes.
Well, if you read this far, thanks. I hope I didn't scare you all too much. I am doing a lot a better though, I promise. I'm getting stronger everyday, though activity on this blog will be slow. Send me some prayers, good vibes, whatever. I'd really appreciate anything. Hope you've had a good month, better than mine hopefully.

Gonna be late - C. Hood

TRIGGER WARNING: Description of car accident and physical injuries, and anxiety.
Sorry this took so long, lovie! Been super busy lately! Hope you like it!
Original story by sarcastically-defensive17
Car accidents are always shown as something so quick in movies.
A split second collision, the car jolts and is thrown around. The person inside is struck with whiplash and tossed about in a quick movement and often the aftermath is quite horrible.
Y/N discovered that movies are total bull Shit.
She was on her way to meet her friends, and her boyfriend, traveling down the Main Street of the town with music playing in the background as she thrummed her fingers along the steering wheel.
Calum always felt shy when she played his music, but she adored the sound of his voice. Every time his dulcet tone travels through the speakers a smile bursts onto her face.
She was listening to Babylon when it happened.
Anything that she had seen in the media felt like the biggest lie in that moment.
What was really a few minute action felt like a lifetime.
Her mind was focused on the road ahead of her, but the subconscious part of her mind was focused on the brown eyed man she gave her heart to.
They had been together for nearly 2 and a half years and at the point of considering living together.
Now, she had been on her way from work to meet with Calum, the guys and their girls for a much needed night out.
Between study and work she had barely had a time to relax, so Calum got onto Crystal who Y/N knew not to argue with about plans and organized for her to meet all of them at her favourite diner for dinner and drinks afterwards.
The sky was barely starting to go dark when the Subaru connected with the passenger side of the car.
She was doing 60 and her car was pushed sideways into the lane next to her.
The impact tore a grunt from her throat and the drivers side connected with a car parked on the side of the road.
Time seemed to slow as her head connected with the steering wheel and the drivers side door squashed in on her arm.
For a minute she saw black.
She came to with a pounding in her head that resembled a bad hangover, but the blood dripping in her eye brought her to her senses.
Despite the agony in both her arm and her head, she could only think of one thing: She needed to tell Calum she would be late. He would worry about her.
She just needed to get her arm out so she could get her bag that was on the passenger side. A quick text to Calum was all she needed
She just couldn’t reach.
<><><><><>
Calum couldn’t wait to see her. They basically lived together and saw each other every day, but last night he spent it at his own house.
She had an early class followed by a shift at work so he said goodnight to her at 7pm the previous night and left knowing he would see her at the bar the following day.
They were well past the honeymoon stage. Their love was past romantic, past companionate. They were bordering on full consummate love and he couldn’t find a moment where he didn’t have her at least in the back of his mind.
He truly loved her, and they both knew they shared the sentiment.
“All I’m saying is, you don’t know if zebras are black with white stripes, or white with black stripes.”
“What does it matter, Ash?” KayKay laughed from the front seat.
He decided to carpool with Ashton and Kaitlin, as he knew he was going home with Y/N that night.
Their conversations had ranged anywhere from aliens to the colour green and now to zebras and their stripes.
Cal couldn’t deny that he tuned out when KayKay and Ash were disputing the intensity of a specific shade of green.
The ride was energetic and gave off a certain ambience that Calum found himself basking in.
Lately, the only time he ever felt relaxed was with Y/N, but he was enjoying the time spent with his friends and the anticipation of seeing the woman he loved.
Hell, he was just excited to be able to sleep next to her that night. He always slept better with her beside him.
“Shit.” Calum felt the car slow, KayKay pushing her foot into the break with the pace of the car in front. “Calum is that-“
“It looks like it,” Ashton cut her off, whispering in a hushed voice for fear of setting off the Maori mans fight or flight.
They both knew that it would definitely be fight.
When it came to Y/N he would always fight for her.
His brown eyes captured the sight of her white Jeep. He knew immediately it was hers.
“Pull over,” he demands even though the car is almost at a complete stop.
His belt is off and his door is flung open. His ears are deaf to Ashton’s calls.
He clears a car and an ambulance comes into view. There are three paramedics crowded around the car, and two others tending to another car.
He didn’t know what had happened but he needed to know if his girl was okay.
He could hear her cries coming from the vehicle.
“I need to call my boyfriend,” she was breathing heavily. Her voice was cracking and sounded strained.
His heart broke at the sound. He could hear the pain she was in, yet her only thought was of him.
In any other circumstance he would be flattered, but all he could focus on was the paramedic telling her to stay calm because she has a head wound.
“No, please. You need to call him. You need to tell him I’m going to be late.” He got closer to the car, and he could see firefighters working at the door next to her.
Paramedics were on the passenger side of the car that had been dented, but at this moment he could care less about the car.
“Please, I just need to talk to him,” she was pleading.
“Ma’am you need to relax. We will call your boyfriend as soon as we can get you out and looked over.”
“But he’s waiting for me,” she was crying. From the pain or her stress, he didn’t know.
His feet felt more sluggish as he got closer to her, but he couldn’t stop his voice.
“Y/N?” He crouched down near where the paramedics were and his heart ached at the sight.
She was virtually untouched save for the head wound and her arm that had disappeared into the car door.
There were tears on her face and her skin was blotchy from the sobs underneath the blood.
Still, she lit up when she saw him.
“Calum! Oh my god, I’m so sorry,” she moved slightly, cringing at the pain in her arm. “Crystals gonna kill me. I ruined our night.”
Calum couldn’t help but laugh, “she won’t care, baby. It’s fine, I’m right here with you.”
“I’m guessing this is the boyfriend?” The paramedic quipped. He was tall but he managed to fit into the small space to hold a gauze against her forehead. “No more tears now?”
The firefighters made quick work of the door. It was crumpled around her arm and they needed to stabilize it as they moved her.
She was into the ambulance for an assessment not long after and they began the ride to the hospital.
Calum made sure to send a quick message to Ashton informing him of the situation, but he turned his phone off after.
He needed to focus on Y/N.
A few hours later and she woke up in a white hospital room, her arm in a cast and elevated and a thick wrap around her head.
Calum was asleep on a chair beside her. He was sleeping so peacefully.
Naturally, she throw a sock at him.
“Hey! Melon!”
He snorted awake, blinking deliriously at the girl perched on the bed.
Despite the pain she was in previously, she beamed at him. Her smile could always settle his worries.
“I’ll let that one slide but stop calling me that!” He laughed at her, standing up and stretching.
She used the one hand that wasn’t in the sling to make grabby hands at him, prompting him to laugh once again and settle on the bed next to her.
“So, dr. Hood. What’s the damage?” She smiled, nuzzling into him.
“The damage is that you have a shattered forearm and a mild concussion. Also, you’re never driving yourself anywhere again. You’re coming with me,” he whispered to her, pressing a kiss to his head. “I can’t tell you how scared I was when I saw your car on the side.”
“As scared as I was being yknow, the one in the car?” She winked, pulling him closer so she could hug him more.
“I love you, you know that right?” He kissed her forehead once again. It was his favourite place to kiss her. She believed it was the most intimate and sweet place to kiss somebody, and he had done so since they started their relationship.
“I love you too, Melon,” she smirked once again.
He was thanking anybody who was there to listen that she was okay. He couldn’t imagine what he would have done if she wasn’t.
“So, I think this is a good time to revisit our conversation about living arrangements,” he said as he toyed with her hands, resting her smaller fingers against his own. “Because, if we lived together, I could fulfill my dream of being your personal chauffeur.”
“Calum, your dream was to make it big with your friends.”
“And I did that. Now this is my new dream.”
“You’re an idiot.”
“You’re gorgeous,” he smiled.
She rolled her eyes, kissing him softly on the lips. “You want to do this? Live together?”
“I really do, baby,” he was staring so intently into her eyes that it forced a redness to rise.
“Then lets do it, Cal. Let’s move in together.”
A smile broke out onto his face, wider than it was before and he leaned over her to kiss her deeply.
“How about I get you a cute little nurse outfit and you can take care of me?” She winked as she pulled away from his lips, allowing him to roll his eyes deeply.

Emotions are running high, even if the plot isn’t as much
S5 E7 - Tremors Review
★★★☆☆
Supergirl does a lot of things well. It has created a show centered on female empowerment, developed healthy friendships and relationships, but this season feels...off. Like it’s missing a big part of what made it such a unique and strong show in the first place.
Rather, I can’t help but feel that the coming Crisis is holding this show (as well as other DCTV shows) back from getting on with their storylines.
Tremors opens up with unveiling more on Leviathan: they are an ancient (big emphasis on ancient) group, speared by the enigmatic Rama Khan. He’s a curious one, and although the Earth Bender reference made me smile, I can’t really see the big threat they pose.
I’m more curious as to how Margot can just simply walk in and out of a room without so much as a peep, than how this seemingly ancient quintet is planning world domination.
Which seems a bizarre concept for starters. Brainy made a point during his presentation that this group, and Rama Khan, had done a stellar job of avoiding the spotlight and passing his seismic and earthly disruptions as natural forces. So to all of a sudden come out into the spotlight, to control the world no less because Global Warming, seems very uncharacteristic.
Of course, the medallion of Acrata seems very important, although we have yet to uncover its entire mystery, but is it enough to risk global exposure?
That’s not the only let-down. This episode is riddled with plot holes and inconsistencies and it does make me wonder if we should all pitch in to give the writers a board so they can look at all their past plot points and the ages of their characters (such as the wildly mysterious age of a certain Lena Luthor)
For example: After being caught in a Leviathan trap with Rip Roar’s armor (was Russel’s body there too I wonder?), Alex and Brainy suffer some mild injuries - Alex has a mild concussion and one of Brainy’s forehead discs was slightly damaged, though the latter’s injury helps him pinpoint Leviathan’s headquarters.
They go to visit, end up in a dark tunnel, under the watchful eye of Gamemnae and then they just...leave? I know it was a recon mission, but I didn’t see a lot of exploring or information gathered. Plus why would she just let them go like that? Ancient Secret Organization just lets themselves be discovered and? It felt like it was just a way of the writers to say “they’re in National City”, but very sloppily done and inconsistent.
Another thing: Malefic is being kept prisoner, understandably in a cell that dampens his Martian powers to prevent escape. However, J’onn can sense him, feel his brother’s psychic power, and somehow enter his cell, all using his Martian powers that definitely should not work in a cell trying to keep a Martian in it.
Make sense to anyone else?
As if all of that wasn’t enough, then we reach the emotional climax of the episode.
Not going to lie, this was an episode of emotional unburdening, and both Melissa Benoist and Katie McGrath deserve a standing ovation for their acting.
After defeating Rama Khan (or at least getting him to go away so that Kara and Lena could continue their plot) Kara goes to find Lena, where lo and behold, she has Myriad in hand!
Now, I don’t know about you, but I’m having a really hard time trying to understand how this entire caper was going to go down in Lena’s head.
From the beginning of the episode, we knew Lena was going to try to find a way to get a weapon to disperse her evil-but-not-really-if-you-squint mind controlling Project Non Nocere, but from her conversation with Eve/Hope, she was looking for one of Lex’s old projects, so to stumble on Myriad and decide on that rather than one of Lex’s many minuscule weapons (such as the tiny gun so he could hide under a wig) seems a bit peculiar, because in the jacket she’s in, there’s no place to hide the spiky round metal object.
And what was she planning to do then? Walk back to National City with Myriad in hand? I know she had a portal watch, but how was she going to explain it to Kara that she just up and left? Similarly, how could she have possibly known that Leviathan would come at just the moment to afford her the time to go grab it and escape with it? For a genius, that wasn’t very smart of Lena.
But nonetheless, it opens up to the waterworks and the absolute heartbreak that Lena experienced. And Kara takes it all, probably thinks she deserves it. And Lena does make a few compelling points. Now we have to wonder how it will all get resolved, in time for the Crisis.
Continuing with the emotional diatribes, J’onn and Malefic’s should come with a whiplash warning. After the latter’s bitter hatred for his brothers for eons, to all of a sudden have one mental read-through and decide “huh, my brother actually has a heart, maybe I should forgive him” seemed to get resolved way too quickly. Not that it wouldn’t be cool to have Malefic and J’onn fighting side by side, it just felt like it was wrapped up in a bow way too neatly and quickly for the vitriol that Malefic had been spewing for the past episodes. Hell, he agreed to work with Lena because he thought he would get to hurt and kill J’onn, and still had a mind to do that 5 minutes before J’onn kneeled. That’s not something you get over in one mental read, no matter how repentant J’onn might be.
But we have yet to see if maybe Malefic is doing a fake-out to get out of there because he doesn’t like the brand of crazy Lena’s drinking.
The last emotional conversation is with Alex and Kelly. Now, the distinct idea I’m getting here is that this show’s writers are either terrible at writing relationships, or they love putting their couples through the emotional ringer. And I’m not sure which one I prefer.
Of course, writing a queer romance can’t be all happiness, but it just feels like they want to shoehorn a problem into every single one of Alex’s relationships. With Maggie it was their disagreement on having a child (which BTW, for being such a powerful reason to break up an engagement over, it’s been 2 seasons and there is still no child?), and now it’s Kelly’s PTSD over losing Alex to a battle.
Now, I think Kelly’s reason is powerful and should be talked about, but I’m surprised it’s only coming up now? I’m sure Kelly was well aware of what Alex does, and she’s been in some tough scrapes lately before now, but it’s peculiar that it’s a plot point now, after Alex admits that maybe her feelings for Kelly are much deeper than she anticipated.
And while Alex’s reassurances are sweet and comforting, I can’t help but feel that Alex is in the wrong, and as a therapist, Kelly should have put the brakes on it.
For Alex to compare her own problems and trauma with her breakup with Maggie and her issues with child adoption, to Kelly losing her fiancee who died in the battlefield seems wildly disproportionate. It’s like Alex saying “I got over my sadness over my bad luck, so you can get over your PTSD some day as well, and we can do it together.”
Overall, this episode does tug at the heartstrings, but fails to hold its own in the midst of all of the converging plot points that are about to happen. Now we have to wait and see how the next episode, the last before the Crisis, manages to tie this up enough for the Super Friends to stave off the end of the world.
Supergirl returns on December 1st.

Injury Profiles: Concussion
Welcome back to Mangled Mondays, where every Monday we talk about another facet of maiming, mangling, mauling, and mistreating your main characters — and all of their friends.
Today we’ll be talking about Concussions. For the rest of the Mangled Mondays series, [click here].

Lethality Index
1 – nonlethal unless this is a misdiagnosis of a more severe injury
What Is It?
A concussion is a form of trauma to the brain, wherein the brain bounces off the inside of the skull, caused by blunt-force trauma.
A concussion is a form of traumatic brain injury (TBI), known as a Mild TBI, or mTBI. Typically, an mTBI comes with a brief period of unconsciousness (0.5–5 minutes). The length of unconsciousness is often an indicator of the severity of concussion, though not in all cases.
Concussions are the mildest form of traumatic brain injury. Two other entries in this book are labeled TBIs: epidural hemorrhage and subdural hemorrhage (EDH and SDH, respectively).
It’s important to understand the big difference between these injuries. While a concussion may cause some injury to the brain, mostly because of swelling after the impact, a concussion doesn’t cause bleeding inside the skull, while the other two are defined not by the presence of bleeding but by its location.
In the moments after a head injury, it can be downright impossible for a character to tell the difference between these three common head injuries. All three can cause a loss of consciousness; all three can cause seizures due to the impact; all three can cause disturbances in memory or coordination.
The difference is that in a concussion, the character generally improves, starting at about the 24-hour mark; bleeding in the brain may kill a character with EDH or SDH by this time.
Characters who have sustained a concussion will likely not remember the exact cause of it. That’s because the head strike interferes with memory. They’re likely to ask “What happened?” repeatedly, because they may not be able to remember the answer.
It’s also not uncommon for a character to seize after their concussion. This is because the brain has struck the skull and caused itself some disruption; electrical activity fires randomly across the brain from place to place.
The seizure, if it occurs, will likely be fairly short – typically less than a minute – but may be longer. The shaking or spasms will likely involve the whole body (clonic), and there may be a period of rigidity beforehand (tonic). This is what used to be called a grand mal seizure, which is French for big bad seizure. The character may urinate, defecate, or bite their tongue; in the absence of a witness to the event, any of these will be taken as evidence of a seizure by responders and by providers.
After a seizure, it can take between 5 and 15 minutes for the character to regain consciousness, and they will do so slowly and gradually, with various levels of disorientation. This phase is called the postictal phase. Characters won’t know where they are or what has happened, and may behave violently (even normally nonviolent characters may do this; it’s known as postictal psychosis).
It’s also quite possible for a character to have a concussion without losing consciousness. This happens frequently in low-speed collisions such as head-to-head sporting injuries, with American football producing a great many “conscious concussions.”
  Clinical Signs
Loss of consciousness immediately upon impact.
Disorientation or dazed appearance.
Possible loss of bladder and/or bowel control and biting of tongue.
Difficulty retrieving old memories (retrograde amnesia).
Difficulty storing new memories (anterograde amnesia).
Due to anterograde amnesia, the character may repeat the same question numerous
Pupils are equal on examination.
Possible swelling or cut at the impact site.
  Symptoms
Headache.
Confusion.
Sleepiness.
Inability to recall the injury or events leading up to it, or events afterward.
Nausea and one or two instances of vomiting.
Repeated vomiting, or worsening nausea after a few hours, are warning signs of intracranial hemorrhage (moderate to heavy bleeding inside the skull).
How Does It Happen?
A concussion usually occurs…
[Tumblr Mobile: Read More]
The brain is a gelatinesque structure inside the cranium (skull). When the head strikes an object, the brain continues moving. A concussion is the result of the brain colliding with the interior aspect, or surface, of the skull.
It’s even possible to have a concussion without the head itself striking anything; severe whiplash (a sprain or strain of the neck) can cause a concussion.
Immediate Treatment
Field care for the concussion may involve the following:
Removal of a threat, such as eliminating attackers.
Ensuring that the character is in a safe place.
Treating the seizure by rolling the character onto their side, protecting their head from any hard objects nearby, and allowing them to seize. Nothing should be placed in the character’s mouth, because of the risk of choking, vomiting, and aspiration.
Characters who try to stand up may be encouraged to stay down until the worst of their dizziness passes.
If available, supporting characters will likely want to summon professional medical help (send for a doctor or call 911, as the setting permits.)
Characters playing sports should not be permitted to continue the game after a head injury that is, or is likely to be, a concussion. Of course, neither stories nor real life always match what should
Definitive Treatment
Surgery
Concussions do not require surgery, though overlying injuries such as skull fractures might.
  Hospitalization
Concussions per se do not require hospital admission. They do, however, require evaluation in the emergency department, if one is available.
A character presenting to an ER with a concussion will get a neurological evaluation by an ER doctor. (The doc is likely not to need a neurologist to make a correct diagnosis, but may ask for a consult anyway.)
The doctor or provider may then order routine bloodwork and a CT scan, to rule out a direr brain injury (such as an epidural, subdural, or subarachnoid hematoma, the first two of which make up the next two entries in this book). Blood sugar will also be checked to make sure hypoglycemia isn’t present.
The “may order” above refers to the fact that some concussion patients don’t get scans. It’s realistic for a character to either get a scan or not get one; for the exact guidelines, search for the Canadian Head CT rules. However, as a writer, I say “go for whichever works best for your story.”
If the character suffered a scalp laceration during the concussion, this may need sutures (stitches) or staples. If they have a skull fracture, this will be apparent both clinically and on the CT scan. In fact, it’s an excellent reason for a doctor to order a CT scan. Most skull fractures do not require surgery.
The character can safely be discharged home if there is someone around to care for them for the night. That person will be given instructions to wake the patient up 3–4 hours after falling asleep to make sure that they can be woken up and can answer questions coherently.
There is no value to forcing the character to stay awake; this is a misconception of Hollywood. Rather, the character should be woken only to check and make sure their neurological state isn’t deteriorating in their sleep, which would be a marker of a subdural hemorrhage (SDH).
  In the Austere Environment
Caring for a concussed character outside of a hospital setting will involve an initial evaluation and close observation to make sure they’re not getting worse. There are no real interventions to encourage healing except for allowing the character to rest. This especially means brain rest; the character should avoid stimulation with screens, loud music or noise, stress, excess fatigue, etc.
Headache may be treated with acetaminophen (Tylenol) but not ibuprofen (Advil / Motrin) or aspirin, as the latter can encourage bleeding.
If the character has a significant scalp laceration, the wound should be cleaned with water and closed with sutures (a fishing hook and line work well). Superglue is usable but not ideal, as it can damage the skin. It is, however, effective.
The Rocky Road to Recovery
Capabilities Retained
The character will retain all motor skills, though may have some trouble with balance and may have some transient difficulty with exceptionally fine motor skills. The character will remember who they are and the identities of key individuals.
  Disabilities: Temporary
Symptoms after a concussion typically get better within a week, though in some cases, they can last far longer.
Retrograde amnesia is the inability to remember events prior to the injury. This does not include identity amnesia — the character will retain memories of who they are. However, they may not remember the hours, days, or weeks leading up to the concussion.
Anterograde amnesia is the inability to form new memories after the event. This affects everything from remembering where they are (in a new setting) to keeping promises and obligations they’ve made since the injury, since the character doesn’t remember making the commitment. Notebooks and calendars are very helpful for characters suffering anterograde amnesia beyond the first day or two.
Anterograde amnesiacs will often ask the same question repeatedly, even if it’s been answered, because they are unable to recall that their question was asked, let alone answered.
Anterograde amnesia typically lasts for the first 12 to 72 hours after the injury.
Executive dysfunction is a broad term for difficulty with certain aspects of cognition, including maintaining focus, managing time, planning, organizing, prioritizing, etc. Executive dysfunction may mean that characters become easily distracted, behave inappropriately, or are unable to go to work or to school.
If you’d like some story time, my own mTBI in high school obliterated memories of the day. I stored only 5 memories from the moment of my injury through the end of the day. I remember waking up afterward and seeing blood on my hand and being worried; I remember talking to the school nurse and being afraid that she’d figure out I had a pocket knife that I wasn’t supposed to have; I remember someone in the ER cutting off my shirt; I remember waking up in the car on the way home and being cold under my hoodie; and I remember waking up on the couch and trying to watch Lord of the Rings and put on mac’n’cheese. (I burned the mac’n’cheese.) I was very tired the following day and stayed home, but I was back to school on the day after.
  Disabilities: Permanent
Concussions typically have no long-term effects.
However, post-concussion syndrome (PCS) is a possible outcome, in which your character may experience some — but not necessarily all — of their “temporary” disabilities for weeks, months, or years after the fact.
  Features of Recovery: Hospital Stay
Characters suffering a concussion with neurological symptoms that are worse than expected will likely be kept overnight for observation, but most characters can go home the same day as their injury, provided they have someone to watch out for them.
Supporting characters will be told to keep an eye on the afflicted, and to wake them every 4 hours for the first 2 days to ensure that they can be woken. (If they cannot be woken, they are likely suffering from a different type of head injury called a subdural hematoma.)
While characters suffering PCS may return to the hospital for follow-ups, they will not be admitted unless their condition worsens severely.
The New Normal
Characters who sustain concussions will, in the absence of post-concussion syndrome, be neurologically intact and recover to their baseline. (No Disability.)
Characters who develop PCS will have some lasting disability. (Partial Disability.) Over time and with support and occupational therapy, they may develop systems to aid them with their ongoing symptoms. These may involve note-taking and journaling.
  Future Risks
Characters who incur multiple head injuries over the course of their lifetime may suffer significant neurological trauma from it, even if no one instance is particularly dire. This is known as repetitive head injury syndrome (RHIS). It is also called chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, and is a common condition among boxers and players of American football.
RHIS affects neurocognitive function, including IQ, reaction time, increases aggressive behavior, and more. RHIS also places your character at significantly elevated risk of depression at all ages, as well as dementia, specifically Alzheimers, as they age.
Worse, RHIS puts your character at risk of sustaining more head injuries! The threshold for an impact to damage the brain is lowered significantly.
In extremely rare cases — only 17 have ever been reported and another 18 suspected — a character who receives a second brain injury while recovering from the first may collapse and die within minutes. This is known as second impact syndrome (SIS). It’s suspected that SIS has to do with the way blood vessels dilate and shrink during recovery, but there haven’t been enough cases to know for sure.
Total Recovery Time (Typical)
Mild: 1 day to 1 week
Moderate: 1–2 weeks
Severe: months to years
Sensory
Sights: The character may or may not have any external sign of injury. They may get a “goose egg” (hematoma, a “bump” of pooled blood under the skin), a scalp laceration, or nothing at all.
If they seize, the character will have uncontrolled movements of all extremities. They may bite their tongues, and may lose consciousness. If they lost continence, their garments may appear wet from the urine.
Sounds: There should be some sound as the injury occurs, such as, a smack, a whack, or even a crunch.
Smells: If the character lost continence during the seizure, they’ll smell of urine or feces.
Tastes: If the character seized and bit their tongue hard enough to bleed, they will taste blood in their mouth. The character may not taste significantly different to an outside observer.
Medslang
A neurological exam would be called a “neuro exam.”
A doctor muttering to themselves might say the “cranial nerves are intact.” This refers to a set of nerves that control facial muscles and are not a part of the spinal cord.
“Pupils symmetric” refers to the pupils being equal in size. They may also be said to be PERRL: pupils equal and round, reactive to light.
The character’s level of consciousness is measured with the Glasgow Coma Scale, which produces a score ranging from 3 to 15. (A paper clip has a GCS of 3, as do brain-dead humans. A GCS of 15 is normal, and a person who can open their eyes on their own and follow commands but is confused has a GCS of 14.) When spoken out loud, GCS is spelled out: gee-see-ess.
Key Points
Your characters will most likely lose consciousness, but don’t have to.
One of the features of concussions is that they do not worsen after the injury. Characters should steadily improve.
Memories of the event, and hours to days before the event, may be lost (retrograde amnesia).
The character may not be able to store some or any memories from after the event (anterograde amnesia).
Characters should recover fully, but may have symptoms that last for a long time (post-concussion syndrome, PCS).
Characters who suffer multiple concussions over time may have significant brain damage because of it (repetitive head injury syndrome, RHIS).
In extremely rare cases, a character who suffers a second head injury while recovering from the first may suffer extremely rapid deterioration and death (second impact syndrome, SIS).

What Women Need to Know About Concussions
“Follow my finger with your eyes…”
“What’s your name?”
“Do you know where you are?”
These are the kinds of questions that we commonly see asked when someone hits their head to check for signs of a concussion.
Whether you’ve seen the Will Smith movie, Concussion, about Dr. Bennet Omalu’s research on traumatic brain injuries in professional football players, or watched enough Grey’s Anatomy to know what to look for, there’s still a lot more to a concussion than you may realize.
Perhaps you’re thinking it’s weird to find an article about concussions on Girls Gone Strong. If so, you may be as surprised as I was to learn that females experience and recover from concussions differently than males. In fact, research shows that when playing sports with similar rules, female athletes sustain concussions at rates significantly higher than males. Females also report a larger variety of symptoms, have higher rates of neurocognitive impairment, and often take longer recover from concussions.1,2
Concussions are most frequently discussed in the media in relation to sports injuries, but you don’t have to be a professional football player (or any type of athlete) to sustain a head injury significant enough to cause symptoms needing medical attention.
A year and a half ago I passed out in the shower. As I collapsed, I hit my head on the edge of the porcelain tub. After a trip to the emergency room I was sent home with the diagnosis of vasovagal syncope and no diagnosis of concussion.
Overall, I felt fine. I returned to my normal routine the following day without difficulty.
I didn’t start to sense that something wasn’t right until eleven days after my fall. I began to feel exhausted, dizzy, irritable, and had difficulty concentrating. I couldn’t fall asleep at night despite feeling exhausted and I couldn’t stare at my computer for longer than a few minutes. I started to get headaches every day and loud noises made me so upset that I would sometimes cry. I felt like my daily life was moving in slow motion.
As it turns out, I had a concussion.
I was fortunate to have access to clinicians who are experts in the diagnosis and treatment of concussion and post-concussion syndrome, and I was able to feel better within a few months of starting a rehabilitation program. However, many people don’t have access to these types of resources, so it’s important to understand when there might be cause for concern, and when to talk to a doctor.
What is a concussion?
A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury. You can get a concussion in various ways:3
When your head hits an object (e.g., slipping on an icy sidewalk and hitting the back of your head on the concrete).
When a moving objects strikes your head (e.g., not seeing the foul ball during your Sunday night softball game until it hits the side of your helmet).
When your head experiences a sudden force without receiving a direct hit (e.g., getting rear-ended in your car at a stoplight and being violently jolted, although your head doesn’t hit the steering wheel or seat)
These direct or indirect forces cause the brain to accelerate, decelerate, and/or rotate inside the skull. This uncontrolled motion initiates a complex process that alters the brain’s chemistry and function, which can result in a wide array of physical, emotional, and cognitive symptoms.4
This video from the CDC provides a realistic visual of what can occur during these rapid and uncontrolled head movements.
What causes a concussion?
As mentioned before, football is not the only — or the most common — cause of a concussion. In fact, concussions are most commonly caused by:5
Car accidents (head impact, or whiplash)
Work accidents (falls, head trauma)
Playground accidents (falling from a slide or swing)
Sports injury to the head or neck
Any type of fall or direct blow to the head, face, or neck
Physical abuse during which the head is shaken
Being too close to a blast or explosion
What does a concussion look like?
If you think you or someone you know might have a concussion, look for the following signs:3
Behavior or personality changes
Blank stare, dazed look
Changes to balance, coordination, reaction time
Delayed or slower spoken or physical responses
Disorientation (confusion about time, date, location, game)
Memory loss of event before, during, or after injury occurred
Slurred/unclear speech
Trouble controlling emotions
Vomiting
Loss of consciousness/blackout (occurs in less than 10 percent of people with concussion)
If you have a concussion, you might sense or feel the following:3
Physical Symptoms
Headache
Dizziness
Difficulty with balance and coordination
Nausea
Vomiting
Fatigue
Difficulty sleeping
Increased sleepiness
Double or blurred vision
Sensitivity to light and sound
Slurred speech
Emotional Symptoms5
Irritability
Restlessness
Anxiety
Depression
Mood swings
Aggression
Decreased tolerance of stress
Change in personality or behavior
Cognitive Symptoms5
Difficulty with short-term or long-term memory
Confusion
Slowed “processing” (for example, decreased ability to think through problems)
“Fogginess”
Difficulty concentrating
Worsening academic or work performance
What should you do if you think you have sustained a concussion?
If you suspect that you may have a concussion it is imperative that you receive an evaluation by a health care provider.
This evaluation will involve a conversation about your health history, your current symptoms, and if you have a previous history of concussion. You may undergo a physical and neurocognitive exam at this appointment or be referred to a different health care provider who specializes in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of concussions.
A concussion-specific examination will vary based on your individual symptoms, but could entail the following:6
Testing for attention, concentration, memory, and orientation to person, place, and time.
Vision screening and an oculomotor exam to assess how your eyes move when tracking a specific target.
Muscle strength testing looking for unusual weakness in key muscle groups.
Balance and vestibular system testing to assess for the cause of symptoms like dizziness and difficulty with coordination and balance.
Assessment of your cognitive function, which may include tests for your reaction time, working memory, and looking for signs of delayed recall.
Physical examination of your neck to assess for serious injury secondary to head and neck trauma or to look for issues that may contribute to headache complaints.
However, if you or someone you know is involved in an event that could cause a concussion, and they demonstrate any of the symptoms listed below, immediate transportation to the hospital emergency department by ambulance is absolutely necessary.6
Decreasing level of consciousness
Increasing confusion
Increasing irritability
Loss of or fluctuating level of consciousness
Numbness in the arms or legs
Pupils becoming unequal in size
Repeated vomiting
Seizures
Slurred speech or inability to speak
Inability to recognize people or places
Worsening headache
Will medical imaging like MRI, CT scan, or x-ray show that you have a concussion?
A concussed brain generally does not present with abnormal structure during imaging studies like a MRI or CT scan. These tests may be used to rule out more serious injuries if you or your healthcare provider feel that there is reason for concern. An x-ray may be used to examine the bony structures of your neck following a head injury if there is suspicion of a serious injury.
What type of healthcare provider typically treats patients with concussion?
The medical treatment of concussion typically involves a multidisciplinary healthcare team that is specific to the patient’s symptoms and the lifestyle that they are returning to. For example, is the patient trying to return to school? A desk job that involves spending most of the day on the computer? A sport or specific recreational activity?
Physicians specializing in the management of concussion will often set up a treatment plan that may involve other healthcare providers, like physical therapists for the treatment of neck pain, vestibular dysfunction, and return to sport progressions and neuropsychologists to assist with cognitive and emotional symptoms.
How long does it typically take for a person to recover from a concussion
Most of the current research on concussion is focused on athletes due to the high frequency of concussions during organized sporting events in high school and collegiate athletics (and professional football – thanks, Dr. Omalu). Most athletes recover from a concussion within three weeks of the initial injury. Those who don’t recover within this time period may be diagnosed with post-concussion syndrome. While the definition of post-concussion syndrome varies, it is typically diagnosed when a patient experiences a head trauma with loss of consciousness preceding symptom onset by a maximum of four weeks and develops symptoms in 3 or more of the following symptom categories:7
Headache, dizziness, malaise, fatigue, noise intolerance
Irritability, depression, anxiety, emotional lability
Subjective concentration, memory, or intellectual difficulties without neuropsychological evidence of marked impairment
Insomnia
Reduced alcohol tolerance
Preoccupation with above symptoms and fear of brain damage with hypochondriacal concern and adoption of sick role
Patients with post-concussion syndrome may have delayed onset of symptoms and generally take longer to recover; often needing additional assistance to rehabilitate their physical, emotional, and cognitive symptoms:7
Concussions can significantly impact an individual’s ability to maintain their lifestyle recreationally, academically, socially, and professionally. Understanding the signs and symptoms and knowing when to seek medical care is critical in receiving the proper diagnosis and establishing an appropriate treatment strategy. If you think that you may have sustained a concussion and have not yet spoken with your physician I encourage you to make an appointment and to utilize some of the resources below for additional information.
