modern au fits! basically wanted to translate some of tintin’s most iconic looks.

From left to right, top to bottom:

- His basic day-to-day - just a crew neck sweater, white t-shirt, cargo joggers and a pair of leather trainers. - A take on the Yellow Shirt and Grey Sweater Vest Look from the earlier comics, a long sleeve baseball t-shirt with the corresponding colours! isnt menswear exciting

- Thought an all blue tracksuit and plimsolls with a baseball cap and glasses to hide his face would be fun as I guess dressing in traditional Chinese clothing wouldn’t make much sense as a disguise in modern day China. Chang would wear yellow crocs.

- The spacesuit! When Herge wrote Destination Moon and Explorers on the Moon the moon landing didn’t happen yet - it was a piece of speculative science fiction. He modelled his suits very closely to actual speculative spacesuits from scientific sources. In a similar spirit I based this design off the MIT Bio-Suit, an experimental spacesuit that uses elasticity to maintain pressure on the human body rather than gas pressurisation which is used currently. The idea is to reduce bulk, which should make mobility easier. We’re probably still a long way from using spacesuits like this but hey!

- basically looked up what modern mountaineering equipment looks like today. I imagine the bright colours help with spotting climbers out in the snow - there’s a part of Mt Everest called Rainbow Valley - it’s so-called because the colourful coats of various dead climbers dot the landscape, frozen in place because it’s too dangerous to retrieve the bodies. Sherpas often risk their lives for poor pay to the benefit of wealthy tourists wanting a bit of Everest glory - Herge made efforts to point this out in Tintin in Tibet through the character of Tharkey. Sadly things haven’t seemed to have changed much in that regard.

I know that not everybody

has a great time on snow days, especially when the routine involves driving, but I was so happy today to see everything getting covered by a blanket of thick, heavy snow. We got about a foot, and I am not sure how long it will stay, so I am relishing, forgive me. I put on my thermo bibs, snow boots and hat every time I went for refills, and I had the most glorious time tumbling around like a toddler. Snow days are always fun for photos, and today did not disappoint.

I got bibs for snow and wind protection and the second I put them on I felt something shift in me. I forgot how much I liked bibbers in marching band. I love overalls but they NEVER look right on me. But these! These might just be a thing I wear now. Bibs and aviators. I might be That flavor of queer.

I hope my letter finds you in good health. Are the low temperatures bothering you greatly? The winter has unleashed its wrath upon the slopes of the Lonely Mountain and the constant snowstorms make it barely possible to venture outside. We have not seen clear blue sky for over a month and snow seems to constantly fall from the sky. Therefore, I have no way of knowing whether — and when — you are going to receive my letter. In the meantime, my people are doing our best to keep our spirits up during the coldest days. Balin is complaining that these freezing temperatures outside are not good at all for his poor joints and Dori curses the draughts in the upper levels of our kingdom, but rest assured, the heat from the forges keeps us sufficiently warm. Dwarves praise Mahal for making our bodies both sturdy as rocks and our tempers fiery. The fire that runs in our veins protects us from the cold, but I am aware that the people of Men do not take well to low temperatures. Therefore, along with this letter I am sending a thick blanket made from the finest Iron Hills wool. May it keep you warm during the coldest days of this season.

You asked me about Dwarven winter traditions and I will be more than happy to oblige. There is one that brings a smile to many a face under the Mountain: the Yule Goats. Every year, when the winter festival of Yule is upon us, two large mountain goats, a male and a female, appear at the Main Gate of Erebor out of nowhere. They are accompanied by a colourfully clad couple of mysterious Dwarves with goatherd’s crooks adorned with ribbons and little bells. Each of the goats is laden with countless gifts. Then, the Goat Herders and their hooved friends make rounds through our kingdom, giving gifts to everyone they meet. No one knows the true identity of the Dwarves and the goats and no one knows where they come from, but they always know what kind of gift to give to every Dwarf they encounter on their way. For example, this year, I received a new pair of sturdy walking boots that fitted me perfectly. The Yule Goats brought my sister a beautiful set of combs — she lost hers barely two days earlier! How did they know? Dwalin, on the other hand, was given a jar of fragrant pomade for his moustache and beard. He reddened like a beetroot at that! The Yule Goats were clearly hinting at the fact that he should take good care of himself and braid his hair. I am certain that you know how much we care for our beards, but if a Dwarf is to double his efforts on this front, it can only mean that it is time for them to look for a spouse. Nori made a bet with Bifur that Dwalin will start courting someone before the spring comes into its rights. There is one present, however, that alarmed my sister greatly.

My sister-son Fili received yet another pair of sharp blades made from the best dwarven steel, but Kili… well, there was a bib in his gift box. According to Dís, it can mean only one thing: she is about to become a grandmother and she is mortified because Kili is not even courting anyone. At least not to her knowledge. But the Yule Goats are never wrong. Fili informed her that the reason behind this gift was simply the way Kili usually eats. Quite untidy, to put it mildly. Surely enough, my younger sister-son did not like this suggestion and informed his brother about it by wrestling him down to the floor. Fili, as you can imagine, responded in turn and it took Dís and me a significant amount of time to separate them. Luckily none of them sustained any serious injuries besides their bruised egos. In addition, I am glad to say that all of the furniture in my study survived this time.

I will not bore you any longer with further details of my everyday life; Balin reminds me that it is time for the council meeting.

George starts summer school tomorrow and I’m nervous. He actually loves to go “bye byes” so he’ll be fine once there and probably won’t want to leave, and he’ll be happy once I come and get him, but if he doesn’t have fun tomorrow he will panic at drop off Thursday. I hate that they do summer school at the elementary school instead of the preschool. It will be an entirely new campus and teacher and therapists. I know he’ll be fine but I hate that I can’t really prepare him and he won’t be able to tell me how it goes.

He is starting to talk in little chunks though. He calls me mommy and refers to himself as Georgie, has learned the word no and uses it often, is starting to request snacks by name. The other night he handed me his toothbrush and said “brush your teeth!” Scripting because that’s what I say to him but still meaningful speech because he had tooth brush in hand and was making a request. It was very cute.

It’s rained constantly and everything is soaked. Instead of keeping the whiney kids inside yet another day, I had a brilliant idea. I would put sensory kid that cannot handle wet clothes in a snow bib. Worked like a charm. They stayed dry, had a blast playing in the mud, and looked like a cute little farmer. I’m sure they make waterproof overalls, I need to look into that.

Speaking of the rain, I slide down the front steps a few days ago and broke my tailbone. I have bruising on both sides and it hurts to sit. Such bad timing with the intense amount of yard work that needs to get done. Falling down stairs is pretty unsettling, my fault for wearing shoes with no tread in a downpour, but also our stairs are much too steep and this is my 4th fall down them, first fall that resulted in injury though. Ouch.

We moved the 400 pound chicken coop with no help yesterday. It was quite the project. First Justin used a car jack with extensions to lift coop enough to slide a wood board under, then he repeated on the other side. Then he tied a winch to a tree and shoved then tightened, then shoved then tightened etc. It is now in its final place. You can still see it from the street but it looks much better. He put rebar at the corners of where the run will be and I’m pretty dang excited. Run will be built Saturday, roof will go on Sunday.

Our yard is trashed from the excavation. We are so confused by how rocky the soil is here. It’s more rocks than dirt! Is this a New England thing? In northern CA the dirt was hard with little pebbles but still mainly dirt. In TX the dirt was more sand than dirt, very soft and the kids loved to play with it. Here the dirt is very hard, almost like clay with tons of small rocks and bigger rocks and occasionally a boulder. It makes for a very strenuous and tedious cleanup. Also, I have to dig out the bottom of the chicken run to put down hardware cloth and I dug for an hour today and barely made a dent. At least it’s a good work out.

We didn’t do much today, other than Justin cooking a lot which is pretty much our tradition for any holiday. Fourth of July is weird. Feels icky to celebrate usually, but it’s a big thing out here. I always get kind of sad on July 4th because that was the last day I saw my sister alive. 15 years ago today. It doesn’t feel like it’s been 15 years, but I guess it has. I once had a friend tell me it’s too much to get sad on the 4th of July, and then again on the 23rd of July (her accident), and then again on October 26th (her birthday) but they are big days to me and I can’t help but feel sad. Trauma sticks in your head in a different way. The memories much more vivid, reverberating.
