Playing around with Yara's face. Hi-res, .psd, a short post with more commentary, and the full video process are available to patrons, thank you friends ♥ In this portrait I wanted something between a sketch and a polished piece, so some shadows and the hair textures have a more abstract, hazy style. Yara has eye circles and a signature 'fluffy halo of hair' + 'smudged eyeliner' + 'concerned' look, so I kept that in mind as well.

When painting in grayscale I feel unconsciously more focused on values and edges, like sculpting. Ideally you can feel like this when using hues as well (as in, seeing art and the craft as so many subjects and knowledge areas at once — observation, sculpting concepts, light physics, color. It's all about representing light and visual images), but I feel like painting in grayscale "tightens" my process. Besides, it's a very relaxing, even meditative process as well.
