My parents have installed an 8kWh battery backup because frankly it sucks not to have power 4-8 hours a day. Pretty much everyone in South Africa who can afford one is installing one! But it's really stupendously expensive and it makes me think about how ridiculous the people suggesting that grid scale storage is viable are.
Look. I don't think we will never be able to do grid scale storage. There's lots of promising new battery and capacitor technologies. I give it decent odds that in the next century someone will develop a battery that rivals kerosene for cost per kWh of storage. But whenever we talk about tools for solving climate change I feel like a lot of people forget that it's a pretty imminent problem!
If I told you "hey, I know you're looking at that Toyota Corolla so you can drive to work. Well, I'm working on a flying car. It's going to be so much faster, and it'll cost the same amount as a Toyota Corolla, and I'll have it ready in a few months. Look, I've got this tiny scale model to show you that it's on the way, please give me the money you were going to spend on the Toyota Corolla and I'll give you a flying car when it's ready." you would laugh at me. Every single engineering project comes in over budget and over time, if it's finished at all. Scale models are nothing when you need to solve big problems. Everyone understands this with bridges, why do they not get it with gridscale storage.
Every day some guy says "hey look we built a sodium battery pack it took our lab six months to build 100kWh worth but we totally promise that we'll have mass production down by 2025 please don't think about whether you are designing a future grid heavily dependent on fossil fuel baseloads we'll have huge batteries by then look there's the one in Australia it stores literally seconds worth of grid capacity." and I feel like I'm going insane.
This is not a technology that is "ready to go" this is the shit we make fun of when a university PR department claims they've cured cancer (in mouse cells (in a culture ( with additional marker proteins (and killed the healthy cells too whoops))))
All the current climate change targets are aiming for things in 2050 and it feels like gridscale storage gets used as an easy excuse for politicians who don't want to explain why they're making a grid that happens to be completely reliant on fossil fuels. They just go "oh we're investing in renewable technologies ;)" while sheepishly standing in front of the gas pipelines.
They might not even be industry shills! Some of them are but I think some of them are genuinely taken in by the renewables grift. They see the endless fields of wind farms when they visit the German countryside or whatever and think wow :) renewables really work :) we're going to fix climate change :) and have never understood an eqCO2/kWh value in their life.
People reporting on SMR and renewables say things like "Nuclear is too expensive and impractical compared to wind and solar which is why we're not investing in it" but that's only true if you believe you can run a grid on wind and solar alone! Otherwise you have to say the quiet "and hundreds of gas turbines with fuel storage on standby" part out loud.

also I like that while they do have a light/dark good/evil thing going om it's not that dark magic is vad necessarily. vlimky defimetly doesmt think much of dark magic. its just the connection between claire amd morgama is able to ve exploited by morgama, who is looking out for her own self-interest.
it happens again amd again but im always somehow surprised when trollhumters says: good amd vad are subjective. what really matters is if you can look out for the people you care about amd hold your values. something like that. im sure I could say something more coherent about it later. im multi-taskimg.

Think you could ramble about hard drives? I think your old blog was actually what got me to buy my first HDD
oough yeah OF COURSE I can ramble about hard drives!!!!! i could ramble for days about hard drives. but I’ll spare you that, and stick to a particular subtopic instead
let’s talk about CMR and SMR! what these terms mean, what the differences are between them, and why it’s important to know which your HDD uses before you buy it!
HDD OVERVIEW
HDDs, or hard disk drives, are data storage devices that have moving mechanical parts.
In HDDs, data is physically recorded using magnetic tracks on the disk.
CMR and SMR are both different methods for writing data onto an HDD.
There are pros and cons to each, and you’ll have to choose one based on what’s best for your use case, so let’s go over the differences!
CMR (Conventional Magnetic Recording)
CMR, or Conventional Magnetic Recording, has been around longer as a means of writing data to hard disks.
On a CMR drive, data is written side-by-side, with small gaps in between to avoid overlapping.
With CMR, you can rewrite data to an existing track without affecting the tracks around it. This helps with random read/write operations, as opposed to writes that happen sequentially.
The general consensus amongst datahoarders and other such tech nerds is that CMR drives should be used for servers. This is because they excel at handling high transfer rates and moving around large amounts of data.
SMR (Shingled Magnetic Recording)
SMR, or Shingled Magnetic Recording, is a relatively new technology for writing data to HDDs.
In SMR drives, data is written sequentially onto a track. Then that track is partially overlapped over another track of data, creating a pattern similar to the shingles on a house roof:
Tumblr media
By removing the gaps previously found in CMR drives, SMR drives increase their storage capacity by utilizing more of the disk’s magnetic surface.
In general, SMR drives shine when used for backup and archival purposes, as infrequent drive access allows stable drive performance at a lower cost.
However, the overlapping tracks in SMR hard drives means that every time new data is added, old data gets overwritten. To keep that data from being permanently lost, the hard drive has to add it again.
This overwriting process takes time, and if the SMR hard drive has a lot of big files to store, it can spend a lot of time writing and rewriting data which can ultimately affect performance.
To keep SMR hard drives from becoming too slow, they need downtime to complete the rewriting process. Thus, they are generally less efficient for servers and/or other processes that are constantly reading and writing data without significant or reliable pause.
TLDR:
if you’re using your hard drive primarily to backup data and you won’t be messing around with it much once it’s archived, SMR can save you a few bucks. but if you’re running a server or otherwise have need for a lot of read/write operations without much downtime, go for CMR !

Queer Ecologies: Sex, Nature, Politics, Desire Chapter 2 : Enemy of the Species by Ladelle McWhorter (final)
The Species and Modern Genetics
The science of genetics made the basis for eugenics and much of both are still felt today. “Geneticists of the highest rank did not reject eugenics during or after World War II. Purged of its animosity towards various racial groups, eugenics was not only accepted but championed. Meanwhile, immigration quotas and restrictions remained in place. Classification of people as defective on the basis of IQ tests, diagnoses such as sexual psychopathy and transgender behavior continued and resulted in institutionalization of thousands of people, may of whom were subjected to treatments such as aversion therapy, lobotomy, clitoridectomy, and physical or chemical castration” (90). This continued well past the end of WW2 for at least another quarter-century.
What is species in modern genetic discourse?
Tumblr media
At present, there is no generally agreed upon scientific definition of ‘species’. “Hence any attempt to argue either that queer people are enemies of the human species or that we are important contributors to it must falter for lack of a clear referent for one of its key terms” (91).
“By Making reproductive isolation an essential feature of speciation, adherents of the biological species concept import a kind of teleology into the theory of natural selection. Nature WANTS diversity of species” and “Speciation is life’s way of colonizing new environments in a drive to conquer the planet” (93).
The reality is that “life has no aims” and “does not select for diversity per se; it selects for fecundity, the opposite of sterility; diversity (the isolation of distinct gene pools) occurs as a side effect” (93)
Tumblr media
The Recognition Concept by Hugh E. H. Patterson, “a species is ‘that most inclusive population of individual biparental organisms which share a common fertilization system” (Patterson 1992, 149) This creates the ‘gene pool’; a positive phenomenon not a negative—enable reproduction. A system of signals in which organisms identify a ‘appropriate mating partner’—chemical, aural, behavioral. Able to recognize and respond to potential mates  (SMRS, specific mate recognition system)
This is still highly heteronormative; “through natural selection, deviantly gendered or sexed organisms must die off, rendering gendered heterosexuality a stable feature of normal members of any species. This is the essential truth about species and the natural way of things” (95).
Queer Political Opinions
There is real danger in using the ‘species’ concept when trying to argue for diversity; the “scientific principle at issue may carry with it a whole history of connections and meanings that may not serve queer interests and purposes in the long run”. Moreover, the author argues that “science has not demonstrated that it merits the authority given to it to decide social, political, and moral questions. At its best science is an important tool and component in the process of making such decisions, not a final arbiter.” And we may do better to “question the authority” and validity “ of the science used against us” rather than embrace scientific concepts uncritically (96)
Tumblr media
“If sexual and gender diversity are valuable in human society, they are so regardless of their value for species preservation or evolution” (96).
We must ask “opponents of our inclusion in social institutions and civil society to explain why they believe uniformity of sexuality and gender are valuable or why diversity of sexuality and gender are bad. And when they base their arguments on evolution and preservation of the species, we can be ready to counter them—because they clearly do not know what they are talking about” (96).

WARSAW, Poland -- A project to develop small nuclear power reactors in Poland is moving forward, with a cooperation agreement between the Polish energy giant ORLEN and two U.S. government financial institutions signed Monday.
Poland is turning toward renewable and noncarbon energy, away from its past reliance on its own coal. Moscow's invasion of Ukraine has also accelerated Poland's drive to cut its dependence on Russian oil and gas.
In a ceremony at the U.S. ambassador’s residence in Warsaw, the U.S. EXIM Bank signed a letter of interest in lending up to $3 billion and the U.S International Development Finance Corporation signed a letter of interest to lend up to $1 billion to the ORLEN Synthos Green Energy project for developing some 20 small BWRX-300 modular reactors designed by GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy.
U.S. Ambassador Mark Brzezinski stressed that Russia's aggression against Ukraine almost 14 months ago reinforced the need to turn toward safe and reliable energy sources.
At a later news conference, Poland's Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said that Poland needed a “cheap, clean and reliable energy source” like the SMR reactors, which will produce emission-free energy and be a driving force for the economy for decades to come.
Coal mining is among Poland's largest employers, providing some 80,000 jobs and supplying some 70% of the country's energy, and Morawiecki said that industry will continue to guarantee power security. He stressed, however, that global climate concerns and European Union regulations are calling for a shift to renewable and clean energy, which the nuclear reactors plan is helping to advance.
PKN ORLEN president, Daniel Obajtek said Poland's first BWRX-300 reactor should be launched in 2029 and will be the world's second, after a similar one becomes operational in Darlington, Canada.
He stressed that “there is no stopping of energy transformation” in the world and the oil and gas giant — 49.9% owned by the Polish state — is planning 320 billion zlotys ($75 billion) of investments.
In February, Poland's government and the U.S. Westinghouse Electric Company signed a deal for pre-design cooperation on the central European nation’s first large nuclear power plant, using the American company’s technology. Construction on the plant is to begin in 2026 and it should start supplying the energy grid in 2032.

hello pal! having been drawn into the astrology orbit on twitter recently i have been voraciously reading through your previous posts on here and am fascinated! love what a considered and intuitive take you have on everyone's signs.
If you are still doing the asks, can i sneak in with mine? and ofc pls ignore if you've had enough or are not feeling it 😘
i am apparently:
SMR Libra, Pisces, Leo, and then Venus in Leo, Mercury in Libra, and Mars in Scorpio
thank you 🫂
Tacky!!!! :D And like WOW I love your chart?? If that's not weird to say. What a lovely combination of things!
Sun - Libra - air - Ravenclaw
Moon - Pisces - water - Slytherin
Rising - Leo - fire - Gryffindor
Mercury - Libra - air - Ravenclaw
Venus - Leo - fire - Gryffindor
Mars - Scorpio - water - Slytherin
Weirdly balanced between 3 of 4 houses! Even the big 3 is pretty balanced, not favoring a particular element or another. There's even an even spread of the modalities, too! 1 each of the 3: cardinal, mutable, and fixed. Fascinating.
I'll hazard a guess at Ravenclaw coming out on top, but let's see how it goes!
Let's work by element, shall we?
Because the water signs are the only ones in different signs, I'll knock those out first.
The moon is our emotions and subconscious. In Pisces, the mutuable (changeable, adaptable) water sign (emotion, intuition.) So your center of emotion is in what I would argue is the most emotional sign. Highly empathic, compassionate, sensitive. The sheer vastness of feeling can be a lot. Which, for Pisces, can lead to escapism. Pisces Moon feels very romantic, very artistic. A vivid inner world to better cope with one's emotions. There's this very deep need to either create or experience art, to better process their own thoughts and feelings. Pisces is also quite spiritual. Very close to the divine, in some ways. It has a very majestic, otherworldly feel to it. But also ancient and wise. There's this sense of the heart knowing a lot more than the mind does.
Then Mars, our center of action and aggression, domicile in Scorpio. Scorpio is the fixed (stubborn, steady) water sign (emotion, intuition.) While Pisces handles its vulnerabilities by escaping, Scorpio goes on the offense and goes for the throat. Scorpio is skeptical and intense, and drawn to the dark and taboo. There's this deep awareness of the world's worst realities, which it is both enamored by and fearful of. Scorpio is the tactician. It stands back and observes. It's curious, and a bit sneaky. Always watching, always gathering information. And Scorpio is very good at making use of its knowledge and skills for survival, oftentimes, but also for more selfish endeavors, as Scorpio can be quite possessive and passionate. Scorpio is driven by fear, and self-preservation. A need to protect itself and one's own, and failing that, Scorpio strives for vengeance. Scorpio isn't a sign to let anything rest.
Both Pisces and Scorpio are also quite intense and obsessive and prone to addiction. More so addiction for Pisces and obsession for Scorpio. Both are deeply feeling, and a bit reserved. Very driven by an inner world, and by how much they care. Pisces can be very impressionable in ways, and inclined to drain all its resources for others. Very helpful, at times to its own detriment. Whereas Scorpio is the sign of shares resources and inheritances. There is a great sense of love and giving here, whether others are aware of it or not.
But it is that great need for self-preservation, and cleverness, that often puts water signs in Slytherin. Though for its drive to action and martial background, I often give Scorpio Gryffindor as second choice. And for Pisces's great inner wisdom, I often give it Ravenclaw as second choice.
Now let's look at...Leo. Leo is our fixed (stubborn, steady) fire (energy, spirit) sign. Leo is represented by the lion. The lion is king. So you can pull on what builds Leo to see what Leo is. A king or queen on their throne, yes? In one place (fixed) and their light (fire) shines all the brighter for being there. Leo wants attention and adulation. Leo wants to be seen. It isn't necessarily arrogance, but openness. A desire to be seen and understood and accepted. Leo is quite creative as a fire sign, and often uses creativity as a means of self-expression. And for all that Leo wants for the self, they are equally as loyal and generous. Leo's all about getting a lot, but also giving a lot. A great exchange of energy. Going back to the "King" in an ideal world, you serve your king...and your king serves you.
Just an idea of what that energy is and where it comes from.
So you see that energy displayed in two places. Venus, the realm of love and pleasure, and rising, which is your interaction with the world around you.
So you react to the world in a very Leonine way, and that's how others perceive you. At first glance, one might see a Leo in you. This really warm, sunny vibe. Very kind and friendly and this big aura of goodness.
But this also reflects in how you love. So, most notably in relationships. Leo Venus is playful and fun. It seeks romance! So you think Venus covers relationships and Leo is quite dramatic, so this idea of big love. But it can also indicate big important relationships in general, even friendships. Very loyal to and generous to those who matter to you. But love can also go into hobbies and interests and self-care. So Leo Venus can mean artistic endeavors. Especially performing arts, but can really be anything creative. Probably big love of music (again, the drama and artistry of it.) And here means sort of attacking those interests with great zeal and great love and enthusiasm.
So all in all...big Gryffindor energy. But Leo also has a Hufflepuff-y vibe. Leo at it's best is a benevolent ruler. Those ideas of generosity and loyalty and positivity are big Hufflepuff traits. So, Major: Gryffindor, Minor: Hufflepuff.
Then Leo Rising means one very important thing: the Sun is the chart ruler. Leo is ruled by the sun, and so the sun rules the chart. (Fun fact: I'm also a Leo rising!)
So...now we look at Libra. Libra is the cardinal (forward-moving, take charge) air sign (intellect, sociability.) We see Libra in Mercury (communication and learning) and the sun (ego and core.)
Libra is ruled by Venus. So there's this sense of beauty and aesthetic. This doesn't strictly mean "popular beauty ideals" but can imply a strong sense of what one considers beautiful and having one's own aesthetic. (Though Libra is often associated with more refined, polished bearing.) Those sort of fall into the more "real" Libran ideals of balance and harmony. Peace and fairness and justice. Libra is the scales.
So Libra can often be seen as this very gentle, even vain sign. Or even someone who gets around (that Venus rulership.) Which is not quite fair when you look at what Libra is.
Libra is a diplomat. Libra plays devil's advocate and sees all sides. It's this idea of that sociability and intellect fully meeting. Libra has to know and see all sides to really know what is fair and what is justice. Libra wants to smooth things over, and make sure everyone is having a good time. Think of Libra as an excellent party host. They put time and care into decorations and planning. They greet everyone at the door. They check in on their guests. They make small talk to get everyone comfortable and feel integrated. They see a dispute between two guests and rush over to flawlessly deescalate the situation. They're a cardinal sign, and they step up and act and initiate a lot more than they might be given credit for, because they're not looking for accolades. They're looking for harmony.
So we see this come up in how you communicate and learn. There's probably an interest in more human-related subjects such as history or English or psychology, etc. To connect to others, see all sides, better understand people and better interact with people. Probably does well in study groups and learning from others. Probably very harmonious and gentle in interactions. We also see this in the sun, the sense of self. This desire to connect to others, to make things right, to balance the scales. A sense of purpose, a sense of justice.
So Libra is strongly Ravenclaw, yes, because of the same airy qualities they share. Creativity (from Venus) and knowledge (air), both very Ravenclaw. But we also get hints of Hufflepuff, too, with that sense of balance and fairness.
But Libra is also in fall in the sun. Domicile and detriment, then exalted and in fall are the essential dignities of a planet. In detriment or fall, a planet doesn't work well with that sign's energy. The sun is our sense of self, yes? And Libra is more outward-focused. The focus is on relationships, and balance. You can imagine how seeking balance can be hard, because having a sense of self is very firm and landing on one stance, in a way. So there's a bit of inner struggle with really finding the self, in some ways. (But the more "negative" dignities aren't bad necessarily, just difficult.) Too focused is Libra on what is outside of the self. Which is going to be important when I try to figure this all out.
So we have so far:
Slytherin: Major: 2 (Scorpio)
Hufflepuff: Minor: 4 (Libra & Leo)
Gryffindor: Major: 2 (Leo) Minor: 2 (Scorpio)
Ravenclaw: Major: 2 (Libra)
So this is interesting. Very interesting. Even with a lack of earth in the chart (and on that note, I am quite curious if you have earth on the outer planets at all...) we still find the houses pretty balanced. 4 minor points could make 2 major points, maybe. Which would make one winner clear because of the additional minor points.
But let's take a few things into account.
Mars is domicile in Scorpio (extra boost!)
Chart ruler, Sun (extra boost)
Except...minus boost because the sun is in fall in Libra
Because the sun is the chart ruler, I also like to look a the dispositor of the sun
The sun is in Libra. Libra is ruled by Venus. Venus is the dispositor of the sun. Extra boost for Venus.
That's our Leo Venus, so...I feel pretty confident in:
GRYFFINDOR!!!!
But the hat probably took a minute to get there.

Gazelle is a Well Tank locomotive, built by Alfred, Dodman & Co of King's Lynn in 1893. She holds the title of the only locomotive constructed in the county of Norfolk (for the princely sum of £250!), and possibly the smallest standard gauge engine ever built (claimed, doubtful, but I wanna give it to her cos her vibes are immaculate.) She was owned first by William Burkitt, a corn & seed merchant, who, by virtue of running rights, took her out on regular trips along the Midland & Great Northern Railway, and the Great Eastern Railway. She was once run all the way from King's Lynn to Chesterfield (poor thing) going via Lincoln (wayy up Lincolnshire!) and taking up the mainline for upwards of five hours.
Tumblr media
In 1910 she was sold to T.W. Ward (A scrap dealer but apparently also involved in the general trade of locomotives), who passed her on to the Shropshire & Montgomeryshire Railway. They rebuilt her (or, had her rebuilt, by Bagnall's of Stafford) in 1911, whence she reappeared as an 0-4-2 - curiously, the centre wheel-arch was left in situ, although the original driving wheels were discarded. This leaves her with non-matching centre wheels, the others are the original Mansells. A 'cab' was added in this rebuild.
Tumblr media
She worked on the SMR's passenger services for some time - six passengers could be accommodated in a second enclosed space, added later, which was essentially in her bunker. Passengers tended to complain of the smoke and soot from the chimney, so a single coach was provided - A wooden bodied vehicle on four wheels. This was rebodyed on the same underframe at one point, or else a whole new coach was built to replace the first - sources differ.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In WW2 the SMR was taken over by the War Department, (it served several armaments factories) and in this course of ownership Gazelle was used on line examination trips, inspecting for signs of sabotage, and 'at times' used to convey ammunition. In 1945 she was left at Kinnerley, by the pond and on a siding open to the elements. She had lost her chimney cap at one point, and a crude replacement was fitted. She was also slightly injured by a collision with a W.D. Dean Goods, several of which were provided for the line by the W.D.. In 1950, the line was ceeded into BR Western Region stock - the surviving SMR engines, three ex-LNW Coal Tanks and one Gazelle - were promptly withdrawn. The 0-6-2Ts were cut up at once; however Gazelle was preserved - first at Longmoor and later on various sites under care of the Science Museum and later the NRM. She eventually wound up in Tenterden, and resides in the Col. Stephens museum, on public display, in an enclosed space out of the weather.

The Intersection of AI and Nuclear Power: Canada's Opportunity to Lead
Tumblr media
The Growing Energy Demand of the AI Revolution
The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has sparked a global race to harness its power, but one crucial question remains: where will AI get its energy? As AI applications become more pervasive and complex, the demand for energy to support these systems is poised to escalate dramatically. This presents an opportunity for Canada to emerge as a global leader in exporting clean, reliable nuclear power technologies and uranium.
With the ability to provide scalable and reliable baseload energy, nuclear power, especially small modular reactors (SMRs), can meet the energy needs of the AI sector while addressing decarbonization.
youtube
The Global Competition for Data Centers
AI algorithms, particularly those powering deep learning models, require extensive computational resources, often necessitating the use of energy-intensive hardware such as graphics processing units and data centers. The demand for energy to support these systems is expected to increase exponentially as AI becomes more pervasive and complex. Data centers alone already consume about 1 percent of global electricity, with cryptocurrency mining consuming an additional 0.4 percent.
The projected growth in AI servers suggests that they could consume as much as 134 terawatt hours annually by 2027, equivalent to the energy consumption of countries such as Argentina, the Netherlands, and Sweden. This exponential growth in energy demand calls for a rethinking of global energy strategies and the need for reliable power sources.
Canada's Monumental Opportunity
Canada has a unique opportunity to position itself as a global leader in exporting clean, reliable nuclear power technologies and uranium. Nuclear power is the most reliable, locatable, and scalable clean energy source available. Unlike hydroelectric plants, wind turbines, and solar panels, nuclear plants, especially SMRs, can be deployed anywhere and provide reliable baseload energy.
Smaller countries that have not yet embraced nuclear power will turn to Canada for assistance in making the leap. The adoption of Canadian-made SMRs by these countries could represent a significant energy step change to enable the AI revolution on a global scale.
The Role of Nuclear Energy in the AI Puzzle
Low-carbon nuclear energy emerges as a critical piece of the AI puzzle. It offers a path to meet the growing energy needs of the AI sector while addressing decarbonization. Governments globally need to ramp up their investments in nuclear energy and uranium mining, with a particular focus on Canada, which possesses tremendous resource assets in Saskatchewan and nuclear expertise.
Major corporations and industry leaders, such as Microsoft, are also exploring the deployment of SMRs to power their data centers. By investing in nuclear power and uranium mining, governments and institutional investors not only support the growth of AI but also ensure that its foundation is built on low-carbon energy.
Fostering a Future for AI
Investing in nuclear power and uranium mining is not just an energy strategy; it signifies a commitment to fostering a future in which AI can flourish. As AI continues to reshape economies and societies, it is imperative to ensure that its growth is sustainable and environmentally friendly. Governments and institutional investors must not only invest in AI technology but also in the infrastructure that sustains it.
By scaling up electricity grids and supporting the expansion of data centers, governments can help small and mid-sized companies stay competitive in the AI landscape. Ontario's clean grid, primarily fueled by nuclear energy, has already attracted electric vehicle manufacturers. Other regions should follow suit and replicate this success.
The AI revolution is driving an exponential increase in energy demand, necessitating a global rethinking of energy strategies. As AI becomes more pervasive and complex, the need for reliable power sources becomes paramount. Canada has a monumental opportunity to emerge as a global leader in exporting clean, reliable nuclear power technologies and uranium.
Nuclear power, especially small modular reactors, offers a scalable and low-carbon solution to meet the energy needs of the AI sector. By investing in nuclear power and uranium mining, governments and institutional investors not only support the growth of AI but also foster a future in which AI can flourish sustainably.

Interestingly enough, for any researcher who goes through Seagate’s extensive catalog of enterprise harddrives, there is one glaring exception – the Exos X26z. Distinguishing itself from windows and macos, this 3.5 – inch 25TB enterprise hard drive operates on HM-SMR technology that is not supported by both of these desktop operating systems. However, for this to become a reality it must be installed into one’s IT and for that reason, successful integration into one’s IT only possible with the use of a Linux distribution. In addition, the Exos X26z is not sold at regular retailers, since it is designed specifically for Seagate’s largest corporate client. It has highest utility at very big hypersale data centers that increase by approximately 25% of storage capacity per slot in comparison with traditional HDDs. Such information is available from Storage Review who got one such unit via eBay. Storage Review did a few benchmarks where it compared Seagate’s 25TB hard drive with the company’s 20TB IronWolf Pro device for performance assessment. X26z was equally matched with the Iron Wolf pro in Seq 128K read & seq 128 write but managed 274MB/S & 270 MB/S while they got 278MB/S & 286. X26z outdid in Random 4K Read tests that were at 2,121 IOPS than that of 233 IOPS for IronWolf Pro. Nevertheless, for Random 4K Writes the Exos hard drive could produce a maximum of two IOPS against 313 IOPS by the IronWolf Pro. However, the results of the 3D Mark is quite impressive for 4K reads. While it is true that these hard drives are well designed for their performance in a data center to end users this should be a point of concern. The main reason for this is the expected development of HAMR-based innovative technology. Seagate and Western Digital are also manufacturing HDDs that will exceed 30TB capacity using HAMR technology set for launch in 2024. These drives were specially designed for the enterprises, they aim at exceeding the largest existing hard drives. Also constant endeavors seek to go beyond the limit and create disk storage space that is up to hundred Terabytes in size.

The Role of Hydrogen Gas Plants in Energy Transition
Tumblr media
Introduction
In recent years, the world has witnessed a paradigm shift in its energy landscape, driven by a pressing need to address climate change and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. Hydrogen gas has emerged as a frontrunner in this transition, playing a pivotal role in the quest for cleaner and more sustainable energy sources. This article will delve into the role of hydrogen gas plants in the energy transition, exploring their significance, applications, and the environmental benefits they bring.
What is Hydrogen Gas?
Before delving into the role of hydrogen gas plants, it’s essential to understand what hydrogen gas is. Hydrogen, the lightest and most abundant element in the universe, is a colorless, odorless gas. It holds the key to a sustainable energy future due to its versatility and environmental friendliness.
 The Hydrogen Production Process
Electrolysis: The Green Way
One of the primary methods of producing hydrogen gas is through electrolysis. This process involves splitting water (H2O) into its constituent elements, hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2), using electricity. When renewable energy sources like wind or solar power the electrolysis process, the hydrogen produced is green and clean.
Steam Methane Reforming (SMR)
Conventional hydrogen production has long relied on steam methane reforming, which extracts hydrogen from natural gas. While it’s an established method, it’s not as environmentally friendly as electrolysis, as it produces carbon emissions.
Role of Hydrogen Gas in Energy Transition
Hydrogen gas plays a multifaceted role in the energy transition, offering solutions to various challenges.
1. Decarbonizing Transport
The transportation sector is a significant contributor to carbon emissions. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles offer a clean alternative to traditional gasoline and diesel vehicles. These vehicles convert hydrogen gas into electricity to power the vehicle, emitting only water vapor as a byproduct.

The market for shingled magnetic recording is anticipated to expand at a robust CAGR of 20.7% from 2022 to 2032. It is currently valued at US$ 1.6 billion, but by then, it’s anticipated to be worth US$ 10.6 billion. Previously, the market grew at a slower CAGR of 19.3% from 2016 to 2021.
One of the technologies with the quickest growth is shingled magnetic recording (SMR), which was developed in response to the growing demand for increased hard disc drive capacity and data recovery from archived hard disc drives. The demand for data is currently growing, as is the need for storage technology.
The growing demand for high storage capacity, fast data access speed and high cost effective storage device worked together to further promote the development of storage recording technology. Shingled Magnetic Recording has been developed to increase density, or we can say, break the limit of traditional PMR (Perpendicular Magnetic Recording).
