Let's jump into one of my all-time favorite scenes in DOS. The end of the barrel scene when they come ashore. It really marks another milestone in Thorin and Bilbo's relationship. See below. Thorin can't keep his eyes off Bilbo. He's completely enamored by him and moves to be closer to him almost every chance he gets from this point forward. I had to shorten this gif by over 3 seconds to make it fit; that's how long he stares unblinkingly at Bilbo. Until the end of this gif, Bilbo isn't even the one talking. Balin is, so it's not like he's staring at the person talking.
Tumblr media
And if you think I'm exaggerating by saying unblinking, here is a close-up gif of the first time Thorin blinks in the last 30 seconds. It's not until Dwalin breaks his line of sight!
Tumblr media
Right after the above, we see Bard sneak up on Ori, and some chaos ensues. Bard has his arrow trained on the crowd and has demonstrated his proficiency with it. The shot pans out over dwarves' reactions for mere frames. It does this back and forth twice, as seen below.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bilbo and Thorin are nowhere to be found. The spot they occupied moments ago is empty because you can see Balin. That brings us to the below. The first thing Thorin did when he saw there was danger was rush to Bilbo. He is quite literally pressing himself as close as he can to his side.
Tumblr media
From this moment forward in the movie, Thorin stays remarkably close to Bilbo at all times if he can help it. Don't get me wrong he was fond of Bilbo before this but after the events of Mirkwood, this dwarf tripped down a river and into smitten.
I think he came to terms with how much he loved Bilbo in these few moments.

Bagginshield-tober / Day 4: Company Dialogue transcript below!
Bofur: Now laddie, don't be shy, tell us all about how you got into His Majesty's good graces? Ori: Oh, Master Baggins! So the rumors are true about you and Thorin Oakenshield? Tell me everything in detail if you can. Bombur: With how loving he was hugging Bilbo on the Carrock, I knew he was smitten, Ori! Nori: Bofur, quit teasing the poor thing. He's turning bright red! Dwalin: Master Baggins seems just like your type, Thorin. A gentle fellow, hmm? Balin: Say the word Thorin. Once we reclaim Erebor, I'll have the wedding planned within the week!

Concerning Hobbits
Pairing: Fili x hobbit f!reader
Request: Anonymous asked: Hello! I absolutely ADORE your writing! Could I request a Fili fic where the reader is a hobbit and really close friends with Bilbo so he has brought them with him to Erebor several times and between their last visit and their current visit Fili has been exchanging letters with Bilbo to learn about Hobbit courting etiquette so he can ask the reader out?
A/N:I hope you enjoy it! I'm honoured you trusted me with this request, especially since I haven't written for Fili before.
Genre: Fluff/romance
Description: Fili enlists the help of Bilbo to learn about hobbit courting customs in order to ask you out in the best way possible.
Warnings: None
Word count: 1471
You’d always been close to Bilbo, he was like a brother to you, so it was only natural that you thoroughly questioned him when he came back months after disappearing so suddenly.
His tale fascinated you, more than it should fascinate a respectable hobbit. You asked questions, about the elves, about the mountain, about Smaug, but most of all, about his 13 companions, the dwarves.
You’d never met anyone who wasn’t a hobbit, but ever since you were young you’d had a fascination with the race of dwarves, reading books about them, begging your parents to bring you back hand-crafted items the dwarves in Bree were selling.
So yes, it was only expected that you would be most interested in Bilbo’s companions - how you wished you’d been able to meet them. But most particularly, you were fascinated by the Durin’s, especially the golden-haired prince who’s good nature and humour Bilbo would fondly talk about.
Therefore, when Bilbo casually mentioned returning to Erebor to visit his friends you immediately begged to go with him. Knowing how much it would mean to you, particularly with your birthday coming up as you so kindly reminded him, he agreed, and one letter to the dwarf king later the two of you were on the road.
To everyone’s (or no-one’s) surprise, you and Fili hit it off immediately. The golden-haired prince had taken an instant liking to you and you to him.
The second visit was much the same, except the relationship between the two of you only grew stronger as you grew closer and closer to the line between friends and something more.
Both of you were beginning to feel things for each other that went beyond friendship, but neither of you said anything as you left with Bilbo once more, this time with a promise to write.
Neither of you noticed the knowing glance Thorin and Bilbo had shared, and after you left, Fili had been subjected to endless teasing from his brother until Tauriel of all people had taken pity on the heir and reminded Kili that he was just as smitten, if not more.
In the weeks after the trip, you and Fili had sent letter after letter to each other, and when Bilbo mentioned taking you on another visit you’d instantly agreed, the blond still vivid in your mind.
What Bilbo didn’t tell you, was that you weren’t the only one who had been in regular contact with Fili. Ever since he had returned to Bag End his mailbox had been full of letters from Fili asking all kinds of questions about hobbits and their courting customs.
It was bad enough reading and answering the incredibly long letters that seemed to revolve around you, but he also had to hide them from you - something that was quite difficult since you’d often bring in his mail for him when you came over for breakfast, forcing him to wake up even earlier to snatch any letters Fili should send before you came over.
In the end, he had sent a thick book regarding hobbits and their customs which had seemed to satisfy the dwarf for the foreseeable future.
Now, he was finally taking you to Erebor again, and you were beyond excited. Little did you know, but Fili, upon hearing of your visit, had been a flustered mess, his usually calm demeanour seemingly gone as he scoured the text in the book over and over as he scurried to make sure that everything was perfect as he anticipated your arrival.
No one commented when your greeting with Fili was far from ‘formal’, his arms winding around your waist as he lifted you from the ground and spun you around, your laugh ringing through the air, your curls bouncing when he set you down.
It wasn’t until later that Fili asked you if he could show you something and the two of you excused yourselves from the company.
You completely missed Kili’s encouraging wink and thumbs up to his brother from behind your back.
Fili didn’t tell you where he was leading you as he led you through halls you’d never seen before. You were about to ask when he pulled open a door, gesturing for you to step through and you stepped into perhaps the most beautiful part of Erebor you’d seen.
It was a terrace, or courtyard of sorts, jutting out from the mountain and looking over Dale, but it wasn’t the view that amazed you most.
The terrace was more like a garden, with grass instead of stone and all sorts of brightly coloured flowers blooming in various places - some you recognised, some you didn’t.
You turned to Fili, a bright smile adorning your face. “This is amazing. Has this always been here?”
He shifted, looking slightly embarrassed. “Sort of. It was awful when I first found it. I’ve been fixing it up since your last visit. I thought you’d like it.”
“I love it!” You assured him, walking further out, relishing the feeling of glass tickling your feet again as you headed towards the only non-plant in the place; a yellow picnic rug set out with your favourite foods.
Fili followed you to the rug, watching you sit down and look admiringly at the food.
“Did you make this too?” You asked, half joking.
To your surprise he didn’t object. “Bombour helped. I hope it’s alright.”
You stared at him for a moment. Did he realise that in The Shire something like this would be seen as an intention to court? Or was he just being friendly? You smiled. “I’m sure it will be.”
As you ate, you couldn’t help but notice that Fili was acting a bit strangely. Yes, he would laugh and smile, but he fidgeted when he thought you weren’t looking and only picked at the food.
You set your plate aside. “Is there a reason for all this? Or am I just that good a friend?”
“No. I mean yes. I mean…” He sighed, seemingly building up his courage before he faced you. “Maybe this will tell you what I mean.
He reached behind him to pick up a bouquet which he then held out to you.
You accepted the bundle of carefully picked flowers, a few immediately sticking out to you. Red roses, both white and pink camellias, red carnations, orchids and tulips.
Clearly, in the eyes of a hobbit, a declaration of love and adoration.
You glanced up at the blond, who was watching you with a hopeful expression. “You know, in The Shire, this sort of thing would be considered a clear intention to court. A declaration of love, even.”
“And what would you say if that’s exactly what it is?”
You smiled, leaning across to place a quick kiss to his lips before leaning back, watching the expression of surprise and happiness cross Fili’s face. “I’d say I accept and the feelings are returned.”
He smiled, leaning closer to brush a stay piece of hair behind your slightly pointed ear, letting his fingers linger. “That’s good, because otherwise I wouldn’t be able to do this.”
He kissed you again, this time lingering longer, the remaining food all but forgotten as your grip on the bouquet loosened and you leaned into the kiss.
You’d be lying to say that you’d never thought about what the Prince’s lips would feel like against yours, how his beard would brush against your skin, and it was safe to say that this surpassed even your wildest dreams.
Fili pulled away, blue eyes shining. “Maybe later I can show you our courting customs.”
“I’d like that.” You murmured. “How did you know all this stuff?” You asked, glancing down to admire the bundle of flowers in your hands again.
“I asked Bilbo.” Fili admitted. “And he sent me a book.”
“What book?” You questioned with a smile. You found it adorable that he’d put in so much effort for you.
He grinned back. “Concerning Hobbits.”
~
Bilbo wasn’t surprised when you nervously pulled him aside the day before you were to leave, glancing anxiously at Fili over the other hobbit’s shoulder, who nodded encouragingly. He’d already talked to his uncle, who had agreed that you should be the one to talk to Bilbo.
“Bilbo?” You began, “Bilbo, I’m not ready to go home. I want to stay here…with Fili…” At his silence you rushed on. “I don’t want to upset you, and I’ll miss you but-”
Your long time friend wrapped his arms around you, pulling you into a tight hug. “I understand. You don’t need to explain yourself.” He pulled back, smiling at you. “I’m happy for you.”
So with a promise to visit again soon and one last hug, Bilbo left Erebor, and you remained behind, Fili’s warm hand around yours as you returned his radiant smile.

Just Five Minutes More - Fili x Reader | Fluff
Summary: It'd been a long day for both you and Fili. You both just need each other to get through the night

Fili had had a long day of his princely duties. Meetings had dragged on and on. Thorin had yelled at him not once but three times that day. Fili felt awful, but he didn’t blame Thorin. The King was having a hard day too. The worst part was that the meetings hadn’t even felt productive. It was just around and around the table arguing the exact same points over and over again. It was exhausting.
You’d spent a long tiring day in the Erebor clothier. A cold running rampant under the mountain had befallen the other two seamstresses you worked with. They’d be fine, of course, but you had to pick up the slack for the time being. Thorin’s cloak wasn’t going to line itself, along with the six other projects that were piling up. The workload had started to become overwhelming, and you’d be a liar to say that you hadn’t locked yourself in the fabric closet to have a good cry.
By the time you could drag yourself back to your quarters, you wanted nothing but a good bath and to disappear deep beneath your thick blankets. You settled for crawling beneath your covers as the effort to draw a bath at the moment was just too much for you. Not even a full ten minutes after you had gotten comfortable did you hear a knock at your door.  You groaned loudly as you approached the door, wanting to bang your head against it and curse whoever was on the other side.
“Fili?” As you pulled the door open, you asked, “What are you doing here?”
“I know it’s not proper, Y/n, to just show up at your door like this when we are unwed, but I needed to see my little hobbit. You’d not believe the kind of day I’ve had.”
You nodded, stepping aside to let him in. You needed his touch and the feeling of his skin against yours. He stripped down just to the thin under fabric that acted as underwear, though dwarves were not known for their modesty. You copied him, stripping down to a thin slip dress with an open back. Fili climbed into bed, spooning you and tucking his head against your shoulder, just taking in the way that you smelt like freshly baked bread and lavender.
You’d always admired the way that Fili seemed to be fearless, even from the moment you’d met. He walked right up to you and asked your name and what had brought you to Erebor. Though he wasn’t as much of a relentless flirt as Kili had proven himself to be. He’d taken his time, ripping holes in his tunics and trousers just to have an excuse to visit you. Fili eventually asked you to accompany him for a drink.
Ever since that night, Fili had been smitten with you. It didn’t take him long to realize that you were the one for him. He carved you two beautiful beads, one a lion, representing himself as you saw him; one a sunflower, representing your beauty as he saw you.
You don’t know when you fell asleep with Fili’s thick arms wrapped tightly around you. You were woken by the rumbling in your stomach, having gone to bed without dinner the night before. You slowly tried to remove yourself from Fili’s grasp.
“No,” He groaned, pulling you tightly back against him, pecking kissed along your shoulder blades, “Stay…”
“Fi, I’m hungry. We didn’t eat dinner last night.”
“Five more minutes, Amralimé. Then I will have the kitchens send up breakfast.”
You chuckled to yourself, loving the affection that he was showering you with. You let yourself relax further into his grasp.
“Five minutes.”

Look at how much space Thorin had an entire open field. Plenty of room to go around Bilbo. But he doesn't, he walks right at him.
Now look a Thorin bumping into Bilbo. He leans into the tap. That was 100% intentional. He walked unnecessarily across an open field just to give his boyfriend a little body tap. For good measure here it is slowed down and zoomed in.

My Sun Prince
Warning: None, this is pure fluff
Pairing: Fili Durin x reader
Summary: Fili always looked beautiful, but when the light grazed him, he would glow.
Author's Note: I was definitely inspired by one of @rucow 's drawings, and I hope this gives you the same soft vibes as her drawing gave me. Make sure to check out their art, it'll give you all the feels 🥰
As always, English is not my first language, so please be nice and enjoy!✨
Tumblr media
Reclaiming the mountain had been no easy feat, but three years after the battle, things had finally begun to settle.
In a few weeks' time, the annual Durin’s Day ball will be held and the party preparations were already in full swing.
As a member of The Company of Thorin Oakenshield, my presence in the festivities was not only expected but required. All 15 of us had our own tradition of gathering outside on the balcony to drink and smoke together and remember how blessed we were to make it out alive, all of us. Even when there was a moment there when it did not seem like it.
Thorin, Fili, and Kili had been gravely hurt in battle, and when the eagles brought back all three Durins unconscious, the relief of having survived turned sour. Oin could not tell us with certainty if they were going to make it. Their wounds were too severe. That is when the elves’ help came led by a distressed Tauriel, who stood by Kili’s side the entire time. I could have not been more thankful to the elven healers who swiftly got to work and contain their bleeding wounds.
The three days after the battle were spent pacing restlessly from one side of the infirmary to the other as I helped the healers in whichever way I could. Did they need more gauze? I was on it. More clean rags? I would fetch them. Anything to be useful, but still be close to our wounded. More than once, my feet would take me to the side of the infirmary where my friends rested. Oin had explained that Thorin’s wound was the biggest one, Kili’s wound had luckily spared his spine, but Fili had been wounded in several different places. He had been injured where Azog’s sword had slain him, but the drop afterward had broken both his legs and arm, fractured some ribs, and dislocated a shoulder. All these injuries caused internal bleeding, which they were able to clear, but they were still not sure if he would make it. And if he did, his recovery would be a lengthy and difficult one. Hearing this, I felt devastated. My heart plummeted and tears soon filled my eyes.
After a few days, Oin’s initial diagnosis improved. All three Durins were responding positively to their treatments, although they remained unconscious for the most part.
Once I was done with my duties for the day, I picked up the habit of looking after the trio, cleaning them slightly, and making sure they were comfortable. I liked talking to them as well, telling them everything that was going on inside the mountain. When I was done, I would usually sit next to Fili and hold his hand. During our travels, I found myself smitten with this dwarf. He was always kind and easy to talk to, and such a fine warrior as well. We worked well together and I genuinely liked fighting alongside him. But the road is no place for romance, and the stakes of the quest were too high. I could not afford to be distracted by my feelings, because those distractions could have cost me my own life or somebody else’s. And yet, with the object of my desires laying upon that bed, unmoving and pale, I could not agree with my previous reasoning. I should have said something, anything. I was so afraid of losing him, of never hearing him speak again, or seeing him fool around with his brother, his eyes alight with mischief and mirth.
Getting caught up in my musings, I lost track of time and was not sure how long I had been sitting there. The place was dimly lit by the light of the candles, the light rays of sunlight no longer bathing the hall. It must have been night already, surely dinner would be ready in a few. However, I did not wish to leave just yet, I wanted to stay with Fee a while longer.
Each time I looked at him, a lump would form in my throat. He was so beautiful. The light of the fire would always dance in between the strands of his hair, making them glow and his mustache was neatly braided and resting against his lips, which although pale and chapped, looked as inviting as ever. How I wished I could see them curl into one of his charming grins.
A sob left my throat before I could stop it.
“Mahal, please spare them. Bring them back, bring him…” my voice was barely above a whisper. My prayers were meant for no ears but for those of the Maker.
And answer my prayers, he did.
With a lot of effort, patience, and time, all three dwarfs made it out of unconsciousness and through their recovery successfully. And still, I had yet to confess my feelings to a certain prince.
At the moment, however, I had my hands full trying to escape the ever-watchful eye of a certain princess who was set on making me try every dress in existence for the ball. Each dress bigger and stuffier than the last. Do not mistake me, I have gotten along with Dis from the moment I met her. We bonded pretty quickly not only over the stupidity of her kin for splitting up on that mountain, but over our worry for them. But now, I could not run faster to get away from her.
I had duties to attend to, duties which she canceled in order to try even more dresses than we did the day before, and the day before that one.
Looking back over my shoulder to make sure she had not spotted me, I did not see where I was going and ran into a very strong chest.
“Oh, I am so sorry! I did not see-”
The words caught in my throat when I looked into the eyes that accompanied such a sturdy chest.
“Oh, hi Fee, how are you?” I tried to sound nonchalant, though I could feel myself blushing.
However, Fili’s expression showed nothing but amusement, and his soft smile fully lessened my embarrasment.
“I  am alright, just got out of a meeting. You, on the other hand, seem like you are being chased after, are you okay?” He could not contain his chuckle as he asked me if I needed help.
“I am being chased, actually, by your mother. Please help me,” I pleaded with my best puppy eyes and grabbed the lapels of his coat, “she is making me try all these truly dreadful dresses again, and I can not take it anymore.”
This dwarf really dared to burst out laughing and never had a scowl form so quickly on my face.
“Yes yes, laugh it up! But next time you are getting scolded for a prank gone wrong, I will not hide you, just wait and see,” and I turned to leave.
Fili quickly sobered up and grabbed my arm, “There is no need to go there. I am sorry for laughing, it’s just good to be on the other side of her fussing for once, that’s all.”
“Yes, well, it is my first time on this side and it is getting a bit much.”
“I understand, and as a prince, I feel it is my duty to save a damsel in distress. So, if you please” he extended his arm to me “I will hide you from dreadful dress fittings and fusing mothers”
“My hero!” playing along, I sighted dreamily and leaned on his shoulder, a hand resting against my forehead as I pretended to faint. Fili’s laughter echoed on the walls of the hall and we sped away to the gates of the mountain.
Arm in arm, we made our way to the edge of the forest that surrounded Erebor.
“You have no idea how long it has been since I have come out for some fresh air,” I commented.
“Me too. Uncle has been keeping me very busy these past few weeks”
“So I have noticed. Kili too has been missing a lot lately, but when I do catch sight of him, he is following after Tauriel. It is actually very cute,” a slight smile grazes my face to hide the feeling of longing that loomed in my heart.
“Yes, he has also been very busy, but still makes time to see her. I probably should have done the same, I’ve missed you”
At that, my eyebrows shot up so high, I was confident they could have met my hairline. I looked at him and found him sitting next to me but staring at the ground. Regaining my senses and taking advantage of this moment of vulnerability, I took a moment to look at him properly. It had been some time since we had had any time together, just the two of us, and I wanted to enjoy it. The golden light of the sun setting in the west took me back to that night in the infirmary when he had been fighting for his life. If I thought then that he was beautiful, now, with the sun kissing his skin and his eyes wide open and full of life, he was ethereal. Absolutely breathless, I tried to answer him, say anything to keep the conversation going, but nothing came out.
I opened and closed my mouth a few times until Fili turned his entire body to face me.
“What is it? Do I have something in my face?” he jested.
And I could not help but giggle because yes, he did have something on his face, absolute beauty.
Fili’s eyes opened wide and his cheeks turned a deep crimson red. Perhaps his skin was getting too sensitive to the sun after being underground for so long, I thought.
“You really think I am beautiful?”
I frowned, how did he …? Oh god, how embarrassing to have said that out loud, but then again, he didn’t look put out. Far from it, he looked happy.
“Yes,” all the air left my body with that only word.
“Yes, I do,” I said, this time with more confidence.
Fili beamed at me. A bright light that seemed to be coming from his very soul out through his eyes and smile blinded me, and I was sure that with him by my side, no dark days would ever come again.
“I think you are very beautiful as well”
His reply made me smile, and the words I have been wanting to say for months -years were now demanding to get out.
“I feel the deepest kind of love for you, Fili, and I do not know how to hide it anymore.”
“Then don’t,” his eyes became glossy and he took both of my hands in his. “Do not hide it, give it to me instead, and I will give you mine.”
Tears spilled from the corners of my eyes. My heart soared with the knowledge that my affections were returned.
“Do you truly feel this way?”
“Yes, amralime. I have loved you for as long as I have known you. I loved you after every battle and during our hardest days.” Both of his hands came up to cradle my face and joined our foreheads together. With eyes closed, he continued, “I loved you when you were the first thing I saw after the battle and I loved you when you stood by my side during my recovery. And with each day that passes, I love you even more.”
My hands grabbed the back of his neck and pushed him to me. Our lips met and all I could focus on was Fili. How he tasted, how he felt, how soft his hair was and how well his hands fitted on my body.
Warmth filled my entire being, not from the sun, but from the golden prince who was finally in my arms.

How do you or would you headcannon Bilbo and Thorin accidentally proposing or getting engaged and how would they proceed when they find out or the other accepts the proposal?
I love braiding hair as a symbol of affection, so I think of Bilbo wanting to learn how to braid hair during the journey and asking the company to teach him how to do it, but they’d all send him to Thorin for some reason. And after the hug on the Carrock he would finally work up the courage (while they were staying at Beorn's house) to ask him and Thorin would be absolutely smitten, he would teach him how to do it and let Bilbo braid his hair, but he wouldn't tell him what that really meant in dwarven culture out of fear of being rejected.
And I love the idea of them starting their courtship in Lake Town (wearing each others colors, etc.), so maybe they'd finally get to talk and Thorin would finally admit what the braid really means and ask Bilbo if he could braid his hair and Bilbo’d say yes.
AND the acorn scene when Bilbo says "Thorin, I…" I'm sure he was going to confess his love to Thorin and you can't change my mind.

Heyy, i really like your work and I would love to request something. Maybe some headcannons for a healer (fem) who is Gandalfs apprentice and thorin falling in love with her on the quest <3 she is really insecure and shy (maybe she could be a bit chubby) but very powerful and saves thorin from the dead? (if you like she could have curly brown hair like me if that's okay) i wish you a happy new year <3
Hey hey, I’m so glad you like my stuff, and I’d be more than happy to do this. I will admit a few things upfront 1- I got a tad (really) carried away and this is the shorter version 2- I meant to have this to you 2 days ago and that did it happen, sorry 3-I love this idea so much, especially since I relate waaay to much to it. Enjoy :) -Error

Being Gandalf’s apprentice in the art of healing is an adventure in and of itself.
He loves to teach, and you couldn’t be more happy to learn.
However, it’s not easy to talk to people, it’s not easy to do things on your own with a damned voice in the back of your head telling you you’re doing things wrong.
It’s a lot, to be fair, and being unsure is… completely natural… but it haunts you. It bothers you deeply, because you don’t know if your good, you don’t know if you’re truly doing the right thing, and that’s terrifying, ok?!
Gandalf is aware of this, and when the conversation arose he only smiled that kind smile of his and reassured you that he’d always be there to help.
That didn’t really work, but it was nice of him to try.
The day he set out to gather The Company of Thorin Oakenshield, he asked if you would like to join him. He said there would be dangers beyond imagine, great perils, and at the end a dragon that would most undoubtedly try to kill all of us.
You said yes, voicing only mild concerns and complaining very rarely about the prospect of death. You didn’t stop until you reached Hobbiton that night.
Meeting Thorin was… interesting.
You never felt more terrified in your life.
You weren’t by any means attractive in the dwarven aesthetic, which was to say your nose and ears weren’t out of proportion, and you certainly couldn’t grow a beard.
However, you weren’t thin either. It’s been said before that men love the skinny, quill-thin girls, and that always bothered you because… well who was quill-thin anyways?! But it bothered you nonetheless, and upon meeting Thorin, this became 10x worse.
Everything that ever bothered you about yourself felt they had a great big sign on them.
You were too large, your curls were brown, not red like the dwarves' preferred, you had no beard, and you felt you had no desirable features…
According to you, that is.
If I were to say the Thorin couldn’t look away from you, that would be a lie.
The moment Thorin saw you, he found you to be the most beautiful person in the hobbit hole, and immediately began assessing who else out of the unmarried dwarves was interested.
He decided fairly quickly that he had no competition, and made a quick plan with Balin in order to woo, court, and eventually, hopefully, marry you.
Yeah, he planned that far ahead. Mans smitten.
He spends hours speaking with you, succeeding only twice in making you laugh. You were shy, he could tell, and he refused to be disheartened by it. Every chance he got he’d try to very subtly and politely start conversation.
However, over the course of the beginning of their quest he began to notice things, like how you would dress to hide your curves, or how you would stutter out decisions before going back on them, changing you mind multiple times as if unsure. And you rarely spoke to anyone without having a very distinct reason to.
He took this into account, pulled Balin aside, and recreated his plan to be a bit more… direct.
First it was the flowers. Little ones he’d hand to you as you tracked through the forest. You at first thought it was sweet but it became more frequent, and your book was running out of room to press them.
Then it was the sword. Not an ideal gift but practical, all things considered. You could fight, technically speaking, but these weren’t minor tussles, and the road would only get more dangerous. So he picked out a beautiful blade from the troll cave, and presented it as a gift to you.
Let’s be honest here, you’re not dumb, you were well aware of most customs, so it was not without care that you accepted the gift.
This had its perks… and its difficulties.
On one hand, it was nice to know Thorin was not only attracted to you, but eager to court you; on the other, every single negative thought you’d ever had about yourself became like a plague.
You couldn’t figure it out: by dwarven standards you weren’t attractive. And you did feel good for much else besides healing.
These thoughts began so little but they grew and grew.
Rivendell was beautiful, if you had been paying attention. Turns out, it is very possible to make yourself dizzy with terrible thoughts.
It wouldn’t be till you were all sitting in a cave, having just dodged rock giants, when he would bring it up.
He’d gotten a little cut on his forehead from saving Bilbo, and you sat beside him, carefully cleaning it.
Asking was the hard part for Thorin, he truly had no idea how to approach his theory. Wording was key here and… he’ll admit that’s not his strong suit.
So when he finally asked, slowly, word by word, you kind of froze. You had hoped he wouldn’t notice, hoped it wasn’t too obvious that you were struggling.
There’s a lot of stuttering, trying to answer with honesty while also not… honesty…
When things finally become clear, Thorin is shocked and a little amused. He couldn’t believe it, how could you not see that out of everything that’s happened that you are the only thing on his mind.
He lists everything he loves about you. Your eyes, your hair, your figure, your drive, your sweetness, your love of learning, everything. He makes a point to mention that dwarven aesthetics be damned because he thought you were perfect.
I think he realized that just saying these things doesn’t do much without convincing.
And Thorin is definitely a go big or go home kind of guy.
Sitting together every night, different compliments every other day (not every day, Balin said that might overwhelm you), and he continued to give you little flowers every chance he got. And it helped, it really did.
Things became more difficult the closer you got to mountain. And you understood why; Azog was hot on your trail, and the idea of dealing with Smaug was beginning to bother everyone.
Kili was injured during the escape from Mirkwood and, even though you hated it, you stayed back to help him. You could tell Thorin hated it too but they were out of time.
When you finally arrived at the mountain, the man that greeted you… wasn’t Thorin. Not your Thorin, anyways. Balin called it Dragon Sickness… a sickness of the mind.
(Bit of a time skip cause I’m sick)
Somewhere during the battle you lost sight of him. When Gandalf points you to the towers… your heart drops. Of course that stubborn man would go up there without telling you.
You did in fact chase after him, but… you didn’t get there in time.
Azog was dead and Thorin was nearly the same.
Kneeling over him, you set you palms against the wound, hoping to every god that you weren’t too late. Focusing, you felt the tug against your hand, like gravity pulling harder. You were muttering old elvish, old maiar, anything and everything. The pull grew stronger, a heaviness spreading to your wrists, then forearms, then shoulders, the effort to remain upright becoming great.
But it was worth it when his breathing was normal and his wound was fully healed. Within the hour his eyes were open and he was walking and talking like normal. Gandalf called it a miracle. And when Bilbo told him of the wounds' severity… he was highly suspicious of your power. However, today was a victory and he would leave it at that. Never mind that you definitely should NOT have been able to heal that. And you definitely should NOT have been able to save Thorin’s nephews who were most definitely very dead. But he’d talk to you about that later.
