On the 23rd of September, twenty-five years ago, The King of Fighters '98: The Slugfest was released for the Neo Geo AES (as The King of Fighters '98: Dream Match Never Ends in Japan).
It was advertised by SNK as a "special edition" of the series, as it featured most of the characters who appeared in the previous games (from KOF '94 to '97).

something about dnd that bg3 has really managed to capture is the absolutely wild and lightning-fast shift between having a fun silly old time and slamming into defcon one because you're about to fucking die.
for instance: right before the party sequence, i decided to go for a wander and do some sidequests before continuing with the campaign, having assassinated all three of the goblin's bosses and not yet expended all of my resources. i decided to burn my last short rest and fast travel to the closest teleportation circle to my destination, which happened to be in the goblin stronghold. it did not cross my mind that the fact that i had literally just murdered all three of the goblins' bosses might have made the goblins a wee bit mad at me.
me: heehoo fun old time party tonight, just gotta run some errands first!
the entire goblin market:
Tumblr media
me: Oh Kay! Mistakes were made, but I can still make it through this probably! I've just gotta get back to the Teleportation Circle... which can't be used in combat. Welp, fuck it, we ball! Karlach's on her last Rage, so I've gotta keep her in melee, which shouldn't be a problem. Her Berzerker ability to physically pick up and toss motherfuckers out of opportunity attack range twice on her turn has never been more useful. Sanctuary on both of the Clerics, if they go down that's all she wrote, they have way too few spell slots left so I'll have to make each one count. Thankfully I made Tav a Life Cleric, so they have their Channel Divinity in addition to spells. I had been mildly regretting my decision to multiclass Shadowheart into Oath of Ancients Paladin, but as it turns out that decision is about to save literally everyone, since she still has her own Channel Divinity, her Lay On Hands pool, and the Protection fighting style, which thank the fucking stars doesn't count as an aggressive action that would dispel her Sanctuary. Keeping her in arm's reach of my two bruisers so she can deflect a few hits. Two of the Battlemaster manoevers I gave Lae'zel are completely useless here, as I can't afford to waste actions or Superiority Dice, but the Rally bonus action is going to be absolutely clutch, especially on Karlach, who's the only other non-Sanctuaried target right now - giving her one hit point is like giving anyone else two. Her Sentinel feat is also going to be a game changer here, as it allows her to get a second hit in each round as only a fourth-level Fighter. Okay, I need to get the hell out of this corner. The only spot relatively in reach is up this wall to the left, maybe get a little bit of cover-

Humans are weird: Ramming Speed
( Please come see me on my new patreon and support me for early access to stories and personal story requests :D https://www.patreon.com/NiqhtLord Every bit helps)
The idea of ramming space ships into each other as a form of combat maneuver was beyond many galactic military minds comprehension.
A single spacecraft, let alone a military grade class vessel, would cost up in the billions of credits. Entire galactic economies had nearly bankrupted themselves trying to maintain a fleet large enough to secure their borders, so in turn each military ship became an asset not to be squandered lightly.
Perhaps it was this conservative mindset that nearly shattered when these powers first looked upon the Terran ship codenamed “The Ram”.
Unlike other modern vessels the ships of this new classification lacked all weapon emplacements. No energy cannons, missile launchers, rail guns; it was entirely free of weapons. What it did have was excessive amounts of armor plating, several separate shield generators, and a pair of overly powerful engines that could reach max speed in roughly five minutes.
The first time it was observed in combat was during the Terran/Crux war. Both powers had sizable fleets at their disposal and for the first couple months the two powers played cat and mouse games between each other; each trying to find a more advantageous position to commit their forces. Much to the dismay of both powers the first large scale battle was triggered by mere chance than a tactical decision.
A Crux patrol stumbled upon a Terran patrol emerging from a dense nebula in the Viper System. Both patrols requested reinforcements. Nearby patrols were soon diverted to the engagement and within short order what was a small skirmish ballooned into a full scale battle.
There were no battle lines or frontlines as ships opened fire at near point blank range with each other. Even when higher rank Admirals arrived to take charge both sides were too embroiled in the slugfest to make any more nuanced tactical moves without exposing themselves to the enemy.
It was here that the Ram emerged and showed its prowess.
Crux warship crews were not trained on how to handle enemy vessels rushing towards them. What’s more several gun crews became panicked when they saw the Ram ships rushing headlong towards them without diverting course.
With the extra armor and shielding the Terran ships not only struck head on into Crux ships but emerged from the attack relatively unscathed. In most cases the prow of the Ram ships punched clean through the entire hull of the Crux warship and emerged through the other side.
The Crux fleet desperately tried to regain order and form battle lines but each time they did so the Ram ships would plunge head first into their formation and take out the command ship coordinating the effort.
As more and more Terran ships arrived and formed their own battle lines the tide of battle soon drastically changed. After thirteen hours of intense fighting the last of the Crux fleet withdrew from the battle leaving the Terrans the victors.
A full fifth of the Crux navy was lost during the battle with the Ram ships having personally claimed 45% of the kills.
While the war itself would continue for another two years, the Ram ships and their unorthodox tactics had earned them a modicum of respect from the wider galaxy, and a great measure of fear from the Crux.

For the ask game, Endeavor gets hired as a teacher in UA to be closer to his son, please.
Shouto Todoroki walks into class on his first day of school, sees that his father is a teacher, and walks out. Unlike Izuku, Shouto has no particular attachment to U.A. as All Might's alma matter and would be happy to attend one of the perfectly good other hero schools less infested by his relatives. However Endeavor calls up every hero school in town and bribes/threatens them not to accept his son. Shouto next switches to apprenticeships, but Endeavor also prevents any heroes from accepting his son by refusing to grant permission. It has turned into a war of Todoroki stubbornness.
Shouto obtains an apprenticeship with the only hero who would take him: Knuckleduster. Who is a vigilante but Shouto didn't sweat the details. Knuckleduster enthusiastically tells Shouto that he doesn't need to use his fire to become a hero, in fact he doesn't need a quirk at all, he can just punch people. Shouto undergoes a rigorous training regime and becomes a buff monster.
Nezu left Shouto enrolled in the Sports Festival because he thought it would be funny. Shouto smashes through the first rounds without even using a quirk, to his father's fury. Shouto has an epic slugfest with Izuku. Izuku has some really complicated feelings about meeting a quirkless hero, doesn't have his mind in the fight, and loses. (Later Izuku will find out that Shouto actually has a beautiful quirk and be FURIOUS leading to a "your power is your own" confrontation but that's not important yet.)
More importantly, Shouto knocks Katsuki out with one punch and wins the Sports Festival.
Most importantly of all, this leads to Shouto being kidnapped by the League of Villains instead of Katsuki.

A JJBA thought experiment
How would the other big bads fare in a fight against part 3 DIO? I'm going to try to break down what we know about their abilities and see how things would shape up. Disclaimer: I'm not an expert in JoJology, so I may get some things wrong.
Part 1 Dio stands no chance. He has no way to counter the time stop and even with freezing powers, he can't harm The World. The only thing part 1 Dio has over part 3 DIO is a better ranged attack with his eye beams, but with no stand or hamon, he has no way to make an injury to DIO stick. All DIO has to do is stop time, chuck Dio into a sunbeam, and it's game over.
Ultimate Kars doesn't have a stand and therefore can't harm The World, but DIO doesn't have a way to land a lasting injury against Kars's regeneration and adaptation. Kars on the other hand, has access to hamon and can absorb a vampire with a touch and wins in endurance. DIO would be forced to use the time stops to retreat until either Kars gets lucky or DIO wears out, then a single touch ends the fight. Given that ultimate Kars is basically the most broken thing in the franchise, he probably has the best chance of any villain of winning.
Kira could use Killer Queen to blow DIO into dust, but that requires touching him, which is easier said than done as The World wins in a slugfest and DIO can use time stops to dodge and attack. The bubble bombs would be less useful against DIO than most enemies due to his vampire regeneration. Sending out Sheer Heart Attack would leave Kira a sitting duck for DIO to stop time, move in close, and win. When Bites The Dust comes into play things can get weird. We don't know if Kira could set any condition for BTD to activate or if it's just limited to someone revealing his identity. If the latter, it's useless. If Kira can customize the circumstances that trigger BTD, he could set it to trigger an instant before he dies, then let DIO kill him. Then when time loops, Kira just has to lay low until DIO explodes. That assuming BTD can activate during a time stop, of course. I think this scenario is the only one where Kira could win this fight.
DIO vs Diavolo is the fight that's hardest to call as I have no idea how their powers interact. Can Diavolo's future sight see events that happen during a time stop or would it skip past the time stop? What happens if The World activates during the time erased by King Crimson? Would DIO and Diavolo suddenly find themselves in stopped time or would the time erasure skip past the time stop? I simply don't know. I think Diavolo's best chance would be to use King Crimson to maneuver DIO into a sunbeam. If things come down to a fistfight, DIO's vampire regeneration would let him hold out longer and win by wearing Diavolo down.
Pucchi goes through 3 stands so I'll go over each of them. Whitesnake isn't a combat stand and therefore would fare poorly in a fight. Its best bet would be to sneak up to DIO and steal The World's disc, but this would be difficult due to DIO's enhanced senses and reflexes. Even without The World, DIO's vampire powers mean that if e managed to lay a hand on Pucchi, it's game over. An interesting possibility would be to steal DIO's memories of the sun being dangerous, then bait him into a sunbeam, but that still requires Whitesnake getting close to him.
C-Moon would probably fare worse because, being a close-range and non-autonomous stand, it loses the benefit of stealth and being able to act on its own and Pucchi can't hide to avoid becoming an easy target. Gravity manipulation would be a problem for DIO. Gravity does work during the timestop as people don't randomly start floating, so C-Moon could orient gravity toward the sun and stopping time wouldn't instantly get DIO out of that problem. In the final fight of part 3, DIO and Jotaro start inexplicably flying, and if DIO can do that again, C-Moon loses the benefit of gravity fuckery. I think this one fares the worst out of Pucchi's stands.
Made In Heaven is so absurdly fast that even with the time stops, DIO would have a hard time keeping up and would be incredibly vulnerable to hit-and-run tactics. With the benefit of accelerating time, it would not be hard for Pucchi to maneuver DIO into sunlight, especially if he can seriously would DIO to immobilize him. It would be a closer fight than with ultimate Kars, but Made IN Heaven has a real chance of beating DIO by nearly-neutralizing his greatest advantage.
Funny Valentine's ability to move between parallel universes gives him many advantages. He can jump to other universes to avoid damage and even survive his own death by taking over the body of an alternate version of himself. If he's not looking to kill DIO, he could trap him in another universe and just leave him there. If death is the goal, Funny could summon another DIO from a parallel universe and get the two to touch, destroying both. He should be careful picking which DIO to summon, lest he end up fighting two time-stopping vampires at once. Another tactic would be to summon another Jonathan and get them to touch, reducing DIO to a severed head. We know DO can survive in this sate, but his ability to move would be instantly removed, especially if The World is also reduced to a head, as with Polnareff and Silver Chariot losing the same limbs. In any case, DIO's vampire reflexes and the time stop would make any tricks by Funny very hard to pull off. This is really a fight Funny needs to open with a surprise attack and win with the first blow, otherwise he's in deep trouble. Once Love Train comes into play, the field is leveled. Since Love Train makes it effectively impossible to actively harm Funny, DIO's only hope is that it can't activate during the time stop. If Love Train trumps the time stop, there's nothing DIO can do and it becomes a battle of attrition until Funny gets lucky.
Tooru vs DIO is another fight that boils down to unknown elements of how their stands interact. Wonder Of U is up there with ultimate Kars in terms of sheer brokenness as anyone who so much as subconsciously thinks about going after Tooru or the stand instantly get his by an improbable accident. In addition, Wonder Of U can act on its own, essentially giving DIO two enemies instead of one, and Tooru is a lot more durable than most people as a rock human. The question is can Wonder Of U's calamities activate during a time stop and can the calamities be customized. If the answer to both of those is yes, DIO loses as he can instantly be forced into the sun even in a time stop. If it can't activate during a time stop or the accidents are the same for everyone (that is, random objects flying at DIO), DIO wins as he can just attack during the time stop.

Personally, I hate ads, so this feels a lil gross
This is here cause I’m looking to generate interest in my card game! Board game? idk, it’s kind of in between the two. It’s called Drawn to Rule - read all about it under the cut. As of today, version 0.4 has been sent to the printers!~
You can play it for free through tabletop simulator, or print it out at home!
Join the Discord Pick up the files on Itch.io Just hop right into the game yourself with the Tabletop Mod
So, whats this all about?
Tumblr media
Here’s the pitch.
Drawn to Rule is a customizable and replayability focused free-for all. A race to build the strongest character, and roll the most dice!  With Legacy, Hidden Role, and Character Building mechanics, a totally unique combat and injury system, it is quick to learn and surprisingly in-depth. Every single piece of this game, except the fonts, are made from scratch by myself!
Included plenty of optional decks to add unique mechanics, allowing you to make your individual game simpler or more involved.
Drawn to Rule wears a lot of its' influences pretty openly. It's a battle royale, it's a hidden identity game, it's a character builder, and it's a drawing legacy game. There is a focus on the esoteric, unknown, creating its own mythos by what is missing, while still being rich in content.
The hidden role cards focus on making many alternative and unconventional ways to win - I don't want the game to always turn into a slugfest. But, I love a good combat game, and this one makes sure that it's very interesting, with unique injuries instead of health, and dice rolling that have both the attacker and defender both doing something.
The game intentionally incorporates asymmetry as a way to force alliances. Throughout playtests, there often was a clear antagonist: a character who's starting stronger, and will only get stronger with time. Forging temporary alliances is something that's really satisfying. It's a game that leads well into betrayal, and sudden upset wins.
Finally, the Legacy & Drawing aspects. This game is entirely in black & white, with very simple iconographic design. There is no card art, and none of them are named. Instead, you have canvas space, and name tags. Name your characters, and draw them up! Everyone's copy of the game will be totally unique to them. And, whenever someone wins a game, they have an opportunity to change their cards permanently, using those new cards in all future games.
Sound interesting? I’m looking for playtesters, and anyone who can give good feedback. If you want to get involved, I’d be happy to make you a card that would be featured in the game as well, and try to get you an official copy for cheap.
Tumblr media
I’ll be running games, and it’s always a good time.

Heathers AU 80’s Pop Culture Interests
Veronica: Loves classical literature, John Hughs movies, and Disney movies. Enjoys an occasional fantasy film like The Princess Bride, Willow and Legend (the Tom Cruise movie where Tim Curry plays the devil btw). can usually be found B Dalton Booksellers at the Sherwood Mall pouring through its collection on the weekend. Developed an interest in Transformers from her friendship with Dan.
Martha: Particularly enjoys cute things. A huge movie fan and a bit of film snob, she loves Princess Bride above all else. Likes Jim Henson projects, Disney, My Little Pony, She-Ra, Peanuts, ALF, Garfield, Heathcliff, and sitcoms like Punky Brewster, Saved By The Bell and Mama’s Family.
Dan: Wears his interests proudly. Transformers, ALF and Disney Ducks, specifically DuckTales, are his top interests. Likes sci-fi and fantasy movies like The Last Starfighter, Wizards, Dragonslayer, The Dark Crystal, The Flight of Dragons, They Live, Enemy Mine, and The Transformers: The Movie. Famously he was the only one in his friend group back in Hawkins, NOT traumatized by the death of Optimus Prime. Can usually be found at Waldenbooks, KB Toys, Hills and Ames looking for books and Transformers. Likes sitcoms like Family Matters, Doogie Howser and Growing Pains.
JD: Likes chaos and dinosaurs, especially when the two go together. Dabbles in classic literature, and likes Dr. Jeckle & Mr. Hyde in particular. His favorite non Slushee thing is the trading card series Dinosaurs Attack!. Likes The Transformers, with his favorite teams being the Dinobots and Terrorcons. He also likes Soundwave’s two dinosaur cassettes Overkill and Slugfest. Enjoys westerns, schlocky monster/Kaiju movies, RoboCop, the Mad Max series, Escape From New York, The Terminator, Hellraiser, Critters, The Dark Crystal (mostly because of how gnarly the Skeksis look), The Secret of NIHM, Rock & Rule, and shooting games like Operation Wolf and Duck Hunt. Also enjoys crime shows like Wiseguy and Hunter.
Red Heather: Enjoys romance and mystery movies like Cocktail, Dirty Dancing, Body Double, The Bedroom Window and Vision Quest. Looks down on those who still watch cartoons at their age like Dan and Specs, despite she herself liking a good Bugs Bunny cartoon once and awhile. Enjoys teen gossip magazines like Teen Beat, ‘Teen, and Super Teen, but doesn’t read much otherwise.
Green Heather: A closet Muppets, Indiana Jones and Star Wars fan. Particularly likes the Ewok spin off movies, but desperately tries to hide this from the other Heathers. Absolutely hates romance movies like Can’t Buy Me Love, and chafes when Red Heather forces her to watch them for movie night. Has a thing for musicals like The Phantom of the Opera, Starlight Express and Cats.
Gold Heather: Despite her sweet demeanor and appearance, she LOVES horror and slasher movies like Hellraiser, Friday the 13th, Halloween, Child’s Play, Army of Darkness, Creepers, and Fright Night. The bloodier and more chaotic, the better. Red and Green are too disturbed to really judge or comment and just let Gold enjoy herself. She also dabbles in anime because of Specs, owning a Doraemon keychain he gifted her clipped to her purse. When asked by others, she denies knowing what it is and just found it cute in a crude attempt to protect her reputation.
Specs: HUGE Star Wars fan. Had he survived, he would also be a fan of the Prequels and Sequels, mostly happy there’s more movies to enjoy and analyze, despite agreeing the sequels aren’t that great. Big anime fan, enjoying stuff like Space Adventure Cobra, Demon City Shinjuku, Arcadia of My Youth: Endless Orbit SSX, Doraemon, Saint Seiya, Space Warrior Baldos, Robot Carnival, Giant Gorg, Ronin Warriors and Sherlock Hound, but particularly loves Tatsunoko Productions like the various Time Bokan series and Tekkaman.
Kurt: Enjoys stuff like Conan the Barbarian, TMNT, He-Man, Thundercats, Thundarr the Barbarian, Blackstar and Bravestarr, but hides it initially. He-Man is his jam, and is both his “gay awakening” and the reason he started working out and getting into sports. Once admitted to Dan that Prince Adam/He-Man is his idol and who he strived to be, but failed and instead became an Evil Warrior like Two-Bad (in conjunction with Ram). Likes to collect He-Man toys but is often in a disguise when going to places like KB Toys to find them. Similarly likes collecting He-Man and TMNT comics but tries to hide them In between workout and swimsuit magazines. Also reads the gay model magazine Stud Puppy, but isn’t as good at hiding it… Actually got to model for Stud Puppy in his early twenties as part of a personal milestone.
Ram: A big TMNT fan, especially the movies and video games, but initially hides it. Is actually a pretty big gamer when he’s not playing football, and frequents the arcades to play the games albeit in disguise. An expert BurgerTime, Pole Position, Contra, Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, and Donkey Kong player, and is very fond of Mario and The Legend of Zelda. Isn’t particularly great at sports games like ExciteBike and Track & Field ironically. A casual fan of Star Wars, and unsurprisingly his favorite part of Return of the Jedi is the slave Leia stuff. Enjoys testosterone charged movies like Top Gun, The Running Man, Commando, Bloodsport, Big Trouble in Little China and The Warriors.
Betty: Similar tastes to Veronica and Martha. Seems particularly into Care Bears, ironic given her cruelty later on. Likes sitcoms like Family Ties, The Golden Girls and Nightcourt.
Jamie: Shares Dan, Kurt, Ram and Spec’s interests. Big Dungeons & Dragons kid and loves the cartoon. Big movie guy like Martha. Enjoys stuff like V, Quantum Leap, TerraHawks, Poltergeist, Batteries Not Included and Flight of the Navigator.
Thrash: Shares Ram’s interest in testosterone based movies. Big Arnold Schwarzenegger and Slyvester Stallone fan.
Throttle: Like Veronica, he is a bit of a bibliophile, and enjoys classic literature. Likes Steven King and the Dune series in particular.

Gencon Thots
Tumblr media
Now that I’ve mostly recovered from the Backstreet Boys Reunion Tour I wanted to post some thots I had regarding games I discovered at gencon!
So I used to collect pokemon cards. Im a longtime mtg player. When I heard Disney was asking Ravensburger to make a tcg I was curious. To do the equivalent of sticking my head around the corner I entered a Lorcana learn to play.
Good god was this game popping off at gencon. Every game was full and every morning the booth sold out. There’s a ton of speculative hype surrounding the game right now.
In Lorcana we are illumineers painting Characters with Ink who will generate Lore. The first player to generate 20 Lore wins. Characters have a power, health, and amount of lore they generate as stats with an Ink cost, whether or not the card can be played as Ink, and any abilities the card may have.
Tumblr media
On your turn you may reveal a card with that gold swirl around the cost and play face down as Ink (lands). There is no colors, Ink is Ink, and a deck can contain no more than 2 colors of Ink at a time.
Characters cannot Exert (tap) the turn you play them, “the paint has to dry”. Once the paint dries you can Exert your Character. They can Exert to generate Lore equal to the pen pips on the right of the text box (Tinkerbell here makes 1 lore). You can also Exert a Character to Challenge an Exerted Character (you cannot Challenge an unExerted Character). Challenge is fighting, each Character deals damage equal to their power. Damage does not wear off, meaning you can’t unendingly use one beater to stomp thru your opponent’s deck.
Tumblr media
There are also Songs. Songs are special Actions that can be played using our already played Characters. So timing my plays right I could play a Character with a cost of 5. On my next turn I could Exert them to play Let it Go for free, play an Ink, and play a 6 cost Character playing 11 Ink worth of stuff for 6. Its a really neat idea.
I feel Lorcana has a lot of good ideas and takes away a lot of what feels bad about mtg. In doing so I think it also takes away some of what people like.
The ink system is great. Manascrew isnt really a thing in this game. That your cards (and not all of them) can be played as Ink or for its cost is fascinating. I bounced my opponent’s smaller Character and he played it as Ink to play his larger cost Character. You end up making more decisions about who to use as Ink and who to play, and it opens up deckbuilding to more fun options.
Not being able to touch your opponent’s stuff (for the most part) is also a polarizing thing. I like that I know I can use my dudes before they get picked. Some people might hate that they have to wait.
I like that its a race to generate Lore rather than having another slugfest. It makes the game feel unique and Lore generation as a stat adds more dimension to what cards can do.
One of the biggest, most polarizing points of the game for players will be that there are no Instants. There is no play-response system in this game. The only time you interact with your opponent’s turn is if they trigger your ability during their turn. Otherwise you do not interact with your opponent’s turn.
I did not enjoy the starter decks. I steamrolled my opponent every game. My buddy got steamrolled every game. Thats 4 decks with 4 games and 2 were clearly stronger than the other 2. I don’t feel the starter decks did a good job balancing the different colors and showcasing what they do. My opponent had gray and yellow, idk what they do bc I dunked on every dude he tossed out. Then what I played he couldn’t touch. It was a hot mess and I think they did a poor job constructing entry level lists meant to be played against each other in a paid event.
Otherwise I felt the game was fine enough. Unique enough not to just be a mtg clone, has some mechanics that make my brain go brrr, but I feel its a tcg with bumpers on it. Its very safe in the experience it delivers and bc of this you can often forecast the next 2-3 turns and you can tell you’ve lost and just have to wait for the loss to take place. Its not a game I’m interested in buying myself but if my bud wanted to go to an event or play with decks they made I’d def be down as a friend activity.

just came across the Granlund/Nico fight on my Twitter feed and was just wondering what your thoughts are in terms of what the triggers are for the Devils men to get them to take their gloves off and go at it?
Nico doesn’t fight always but when he does he goes for it. I think Bratters is the same way and feel like Jesper only really fights in defense of his teammates.
So what do you think their like internal lines are in terms of when to back off and when to go off?
In general, the Devils aren't a fighty team. Bratter doesn't have a single fight listed on HockeyFights; Nico only has the Granlund one. This team isn't a "dirty" kind of team that makes its mark via hits and fights, but a skilled team of younger, generally a little undersize players who're more interested in scoring goals than getting punched.
That being said, there is a difference between FIGHTS and SCRAPS. You'll see scraps fairly frequently, but scraps are just like, two guys flailing their gloves at each other in a cluster of guys - which it feels like you're describing more than fights proper. Fights are gloves off slugfests. Very different.
Of the players currently on the team who fight (at least, last season), you have Brendan Smith, Kevin Bahl, Erik Haula, Curtis Lazar, Mikey McLeod, and Nate Bastian. So your expected bottom-sixers, bottom pairing, the like. And they're not going to go at it for no reason. Generally, in the NHL, you fight because of something. Like Arber Xhekaj dropping Zack Kassian's ass was partially because Kassian fucked with (read: hit) Sam Montembeault, the Habs' goaltender, in the last game the Oilers played against the Habs last year (Kassian changed teams during that offseason from Edmonton to Arizona). A lot of the time, you're going to drop the gloves after someone hits (or god forbid injures) your teammate. Every now and then you'll see players just decide to fight each other as well, ask each other if they're down for it and then drop the gloves and sock 'em. There's a very intricate system and thought process that goes behind fighting in the NHL. Don't want to mess up a scoring chance, don't want to put your team a man down by taking an extra penalty, don't want to fight a player you know is injured, etcetera etcetera. Again, fighting is generally done by bottom-sixers and lower-pairing defensemen, and this is for a reason - your star players should be focused on getting pucks in deep. Your lower lines won't be scoring much, so that's where you load up on players that punch.

OC-Tober Day 11: Fight
[in which some punks play stupid games with a certain pair of fun-size Majima men and win a stupid prize]
This could not have possibly gone any more wrong for this pack of idiots. They picked the wrong pair of guys to pick a fight with (Aoyagi and Nishida). They picked the wrong time to try it (a night where Nishida was getting a little stressed out and grumpy with the boss and was summarily ordered to go to his "happy place" and break some shit until he could act right). And they absolutely picked the wrong place to try it (right outside the door to said "happy place" which is one lock and a few steps away from a veritable arsenal of blunt weapons).
Let's back up a little.
There's this warehouse over by the docks. The boss keeps it stocked with junk cars and old tube TVs and dead major appliances and glass jars full of confetti and mismatched chipped china and glassware from the bargain bin at the secondhand store and all kinds of other things that break in really satisfying ways when thrown real hard or hit with a blunt weapon. Sometimes the boss even hauls in a few piñatas made in his image (Aoyagi and his bro suspect the boss makes them himself and they're actually a scary good likeness) and they're stuffed with full-size candy bars and obscene amounts of cash and other cool stuff. And just inside the door, there are racks and racks of baseball bats and crowbars and golf clubs and... you get the picture.
The fact that this warehouse is referred to as "Nishida's Happy Place" should give you some idea what it's for. These days it's actually more Nishida and Aoyagi's Happy Place, on account of Aoyagi being given a key one day after he shot his mouth off at the boss and got hauled out behind the woodshed for it, but never mind that. The point is, they came here to break some shit.
And bless these dumb sons of bitches... they volunteered.
Nishida keeps them busy for the few seconds it takes Aoyagi to unlock the door and grab a couple of weapons. "Bro!" he calls, lofting a bat through the air towards Nishida's waiting hand. As for himself... a nine-iron, perhaps? No, there's a headwind, maybe he ought to club up a little.
Nishida is always a little nervous in a fight, at first. He's fairly terrified of his own strength (and, going by what the boss has told Aoyagi in private, he's right to be) and he's skittish about hitting anything with a central nervous system. Aoyagi, on the other hand, is not the least bit skittish about throwing hands (or golf clubs, or baseball bats, or whatever happens to be lying around that would hurt if he hit someone with it). Look, he's not the kind of guy that goes around busting heads just for funsies, but a) these guys started it, b), there are a lot of them, and c) Aoyagi is five foot five and Nishida has maybe two or three inches on him and all of these guys are well above their weight class and Aoyagi does not feel even the least little bit bad for the guy whose head he just broke his six-iron on. He considers going back in for a fresh beatin' iron. Nah, fuck it. This is almost a fair fight for Aoyagi and his bro, at this point.
Actually, no. It's not. It's skewing unfair in their favor, because now Nishida has gotten his jitters out and he's starting to enjoy this and that's always extra fun for Aoyagi and the opposite of fun for whoever they're beating on. Mostly because the guys they're beating on never realize how screwed they are until it's too late.
Aoyagi is, as we've mentioned, a little guy. And sure, he's pretty damn strong for his size and biology, but he's also smart enough to know that's only going to get him so far. The boss has told him, more than once, that he's not going to win the big fights with his fists, he's going to win them with his brain, and of course he's right about that. He does enjoy a good old fashioned slugfest now and then, but the strategic approach is a lot more fun and a hell of a lot more effective. He uses gravity and timing and surroundings to his advantage and really, when you think about it, all he's really doing is helping these idiots beat themselves up and that's fucking hilarious.
Nishida, meanwhile, just swings for the fences and that works fine for him.
One big lug comes charging at Aoyagi and Aoyagi drops his shoulder low, catches him right in the gut, and lets his low center of gravity and the dude's own momentum carry him over Aoyagi's shoulder and head-first onto the ground. He wraps a leg around just the right part of the guy's arm and gives a good solid yank at just the right angle and there's one more out of the fight. How many does that leave? Two or three, and they're all on Nishida. "Need a hand?" Aoyagi hollers as the guy whose shoulder he just dislocated runs off whimpering with his arm flapping around wrong.
He knows Nishida can take three guys on his own, but he also knows the numbers are just perfect for this fun little trick they cooked up. "Going up?" Nishida hollers back with a grin, and Aoyagi grins right back.
He takes off running towards his bro and the last of the goons and at just the right second, Nishida spins around, back to his enemies, bat held low and horizontal like a step. Aoyagi plants his foot right in the middle of it and cackles as Nishida launches him into the air. The goons stand there open-mouthed like they don't know what the fuck, and by the time they figure out what the fuck, it's too late for them to do a thing about it.
God, Aoyagi thinks as his knees and elbows send the three punks sprawling, this never gets old.

So I had an absolute slugfest with the giant goblin dudes in act 1 after failing to persuade then to fight for us. We somehow won with the entire party almost dead. DUDE, THE EARLY GAME GEAR! A crown that skyrockets your intelligence to friggin 17. Put it on Karlach since it is her origin run. She is now a genius barbarian cinnamon roll. 😀
