Modern Death Metal Starter Pack.
Most People on my hosting site, tumblr, I have realized have miscategorized Death Metal. Honestly metal In general. So Here is a comprehensive list of modern death metal bands (2022)
sanguisugabogg
Tumblr media
(credit metalarchives)
While not the newest band on the list but formed around 2018-2019 the Ohio death metal band certainly are gaining hype. sanguisugabogg brings back the classic caveman brutal death metal sound. Its not like slam or faster death metal. its right in between, with a perfect amount of beastly energy like a calculated grotesque monster rather than an knuckle dragging neanderthal. at least on 2021's "Tortured Whole", Pornographic seizures has the band going as close to into a devourment style as they can. also alot of sexism that plagues death metal is taking away or done tastefully,
Sanguisugabogg can get grotesque but not in a way that's hatred. its more of playful 80's horror movie gore. or as much playful as that can be. I mean a giant kaiju toxic waste penis monster in the music video "gored in the chest" is not trying to be mean. also they smoke weed so most of there material is about that too.
youtube
Sanguisugabogg's tortured whole and pornographic seizures are on century media records.
2. Bodybox
Tumblr media
(credit - outburn.com)
Not to be confused with a specific pulmonary machine, is a self proclaimed "TWO FISTED, TWO STEPPIN, DOUBLE WIDE DEATH METAL" band from Orlando, Florida. Like many bands, Bodybox take heavy inspiration from the florida death metal aesthetic specifically obituary. Just imagine a stoner, a death metal fan and a extra off trailerparkboys and that's what bodybox is.
youtube
(video by 197 media)
they also have the most on brand and simple to understand lyrics of any death metal band. I sometimes (depending on the band) hate having to know a whole novel of fucking lore or waiting til the band (if ever) releases a track explanation on YouTube. so bodybox is really in this case while not open to interpretation or a lyrical masterpeace in storytelling, is still simple to understand and that is what I want out of a band like bodybox.
some of my favorite lyrics include -
"Would fight for cocaine Would you steal for cocaine Would you fuck for cocaine" - Carving (through the bongfire)
"Until you make contact with me You think your so tuff Till I pull out the resin blunt You still can’t understand this smoke" - resin scraper (microwaved weed)
bodybox's "microwaved weed" and "through the bongfire" are on maggot stomp records. Also Bodybox will be on a southern USA tour with Iam (tx), and rhythm of fear from November 3rd through the 18th.
Tumblr media
3. Frog Mallet.
I know most people would call Boston's Frog Mallet "slam" or "slamming beatdown" but they are also a death metal band in my humble opinion. And really when am I as journalist gonna write about lyrically based frog death metal bands again. like ever? So if your looking for only semi - serious bands frog mallet might be for you.
Tumblr media
surprisingly frog mallet strikes a good balance between some funny moments but the frog jokes tire out / become just comedy metal at that point / know when to be serious and not have smelly pretentious frog farts. Frog Mallet can spring up a good combination beatdown / slam riffs, near perfect gutturals and gurgly ribbits on the mic and lyrical story telling and lyrics that know there place in certain songs. specifically parodying the mosh callouts and repping area codes before breakdowns.
youtube
(FLASHING WARNING) [Video on Slam Worldwide]
"That's right bitch Guttural Toad is here to stay Fuck all you fake as frog pussies We're in leap town now motha fucka From the pond to the tank Real wart shit Frog Mallet Sludge of the Swamp" - Sludge of the Swamp (Dissection by Amphibiant)
I'm not sure if all music is on spotify, so here's there merch instead.
also frog mallet are fully independent / unsigned so please consider buying some shirts and music on bandcamp.
4. 200 Stab Wounds.
Tumblr media
(credit http://www.shuttlecockmusic.com/)
ohio's 200 stab wounds is the new face of old school death metal influenced modern death metal. if you took the guys in 200 stab wounds they wouldn't sound out of place on a 90's relapse records
youtube
(credit hate5six and lbd fest)
200 stab wounds' lyrics and riffs are like blunt force trauma. I'd compare it again to like a 80's slasher where the killer is on the loose and is stalking out his teenage prey. or better yet 05's hostel by Eli Roth ALSO ITS NOT A BUNCH OF RIFF SALAD. while some may pass off 200 stab wounds chalked as a osdm clone they also have (i wouldn't say technical but so much death metal drumming chops and shredding to make them a whole other class of there own and prove there naysayers dead fucking wrong.
youtube
whether that the stank face slamish riffs in the first minute of skin milk, or the in pocket dodgeball tone drums grooves and "diddly didy diddly do" licks on the end of itty bitty pieces, 200 stab wounds seem like a one big well oiled murderous blood thirsty machine ready to blast with hammers and saws.
200 Stab wounds are on maggot stomp records.
5. Undeath
Tumblr media
Rochester, NY natives undeath while kinda sounding like a dumb simple name to many is perfect to me. it really captures encapsulates what is so fundamental about death metal simple fun. While taking heavy influence from a cannibal corpse, its very cartoony horror. it reminds me of an evil dead in the sense that the mindless violence is a way to scare and shock as a way to entertain rather than prove a point. Many references like influences of video games quake and doom on songs like necrobionics (even having a slight reference maybe to the sega genesis game "altered beast" with "It's Time...To Rise From the Grave"), Romero and Fulci movies, cannibal corpse, body horror, scifi, and OH zombies. lots of zombies.
I don't have anything much else to say as I want you to go into this band blind and ready for anything, but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE LISTEN TO It's Time...To Rise From the Grave ITS SO GOOD. Its one of my favorite Death Metal releases this year.
Undeath is on prosthetic records.
I hope this list helped you find some new bands.
Love you
Bye.

EP Review: Esophagus - Killing for Sport (2022)
mannn ive been sleeping hard on this band. like for the last year since ive heard of em ive been like that one dude in the story where he sleeps a really long time. ig id always kinda subconsciously categorized them with slamcore and tiktok bdm bands for some reason? which i guess they kinda are a tiktok band (at least recently) but thats ok.
this EP has a really interesting style of writing, where it kinda just plods along aimlessly for most of it, which i actually shockingly really like because i think it fits the band's sound well. most of the drumming and guitarwork is super super simple, and it compliments the very catchy sound the band is going for, while staying pretty brutal. this is real meathead slam, and it lets the vocals (the obvious focal point of their music) shine. however, it does sound pretty amaturish at times, and not in a good way (especially considering this band formed in like 2008)
im also a big fan of the production, surprisingly. it's relatively clean, but i think thats mainly a result of the mix having like nothing going on in it. when the only instruments going are some really basic, relatively sparse guitar riffs, with simple drumming to match, and some vocals layered on top, there isnt really a ton you can do to filth it up, unless they wanted to make the guitars wayyyy louder. im usually a bigger fan of super rough production (i make raw black metal) but i think the cleaner production serves the band better as listening to their first demos, they clearly dont shine as bright as they did on this EP.
the guitar tone is pretty standard; crunchy, but not overly so, and without a ton of feedback. it's also thin and mixed pretty quietly, which makes this project not as heavy as a band like say Cephalotripsy or Agonal Breathing, but that doesnt really seem to be what this band is going for so i think it works. theres no bass on this project. the drumming is also mixed well, with a very poppy snare (which i can NOT get enough of). overall, the mixing is sterile but serviceable.
now, the vocals. the vocalist is 10000000000000% the most important member of this band, and it's clear that the band thinks so too. this guy sounds like if Don Campan (Waking the Cadaver) and Joe Wolfe (Heinous Killings) had a baby, with a healthy mix of predator purring (HK style) and insect trilling (WTC) making up just about all of the vocals on this release. it's interesting, actually, that they dont really utilize any significant amount of standard slam gurgles, and i think it really sets this band apart. the vocals are definitely the draw on this release, which i think is a plus and a minus. im sad that they replaced their original vocalist with Don Campan, because even though Don is the deathcore GOAT, i really liked the original guy.
overall, this is a solid release by a pretty solid band. it's not mind blowing, but i like listening to insect noises as much as the next girl. actually prolly a lot more than the next girl but that's besides the point. i do kinda wish the instrumentals were less stripped and more heavy, because i usually like heavier death metal than this. however, still a good EP and i would recommend it if you really like Waking The Cadaver or Heinous Killings.
i also think the band theming most of their music around the Predator franchise is pretty cheesy for what it's worth
7.5/10
standout track: Killing for Sport

Album Review: Ingested - Surpassing The Boundaries of Human Suffering (2009)
Gonna be doing something a bit different today. I tend to give very high ratings on the projects I review, and this is because I usually review albums I like. This will not be the case today. Ingested is a British band that helped pioneer "slamcore", a fusion of slam and deathcore, which are both genres that I love on their own, but do not enjoy when combined. Why not? Let's discuss.
The first thing I don't like about this album is the guitarwork. Outside of the context it's in, I think it would be serviceable. The guitarists obviously know their shit, and they pull off some riffs that remind me a little of Waking The Cadaver, but without the catchy, memorable breakdowns, or the haunting melodic tremolo parts. Most of the riffing on this album feels very phoned in and passionless, and I also don't care for the guitar's tone. It's big, yeah, but it feels hollow in a way where it really needs an audible bass behind it to make it really hit, which it doesn't, because the bass is completely buried.
Next is the vocals, which are actually one of the better parts of this release. The vocals are fine (but not optimal) for deathcore, but not for anything that calls itself "slam". They're full of growls and highs, neither of which belong in slam, but they also don't really have the variety that most deathcore vocals have; they don't sharply alternate between extreme highs and deep gutturals in the dynamic and neck-breaking way that many deathcore vocalists tend to do, and so they're just a little too static for this album.
And lastly, at least for the instruments, the drums. I'm gonna start positively. The drummer is a BEAST, no doubt about it. This album is full of gravity blasts and rapidfire double bass, and it doesn't slow down for a MINUTE, except on the breakdowns of course. The drumming is easily the best part of the album. However, the drumming sounds so fucking sample-replaced and post-edited. I feel like there's barely anything left of the actual drumming under the electronic kick, overly compressed snare, and aggressive quantizing. At this point, they might as well have just programmed the drums because nobody would ever be able to tell the fucking difference. The drumming is cool, yeah, but it would be so much better if it felt like it was being done by a human.
But the main reason I don't like this album isn't any of those, because I like a decent amount of music that has those characteristics. Hell, I even use a drum machine for my own music. The main thing that fucking sucks about this album is the songwriting. I mentioned earlier that the riffing feels pretty phoned in, but that's not just the case with the riffing. This whole album feels like it didn't even really want to exist. I feel like the band was just like "Hey, we make deathcore, lets just add a shit ton of slam riffs and pretend we're doing something original" and ended up just making boring deathcore. There isn't a single song on this album that doesn't sound like every other song on the album. You could skip to any point in the whole project and it would blend seamlessly with the part you were already listening to because it all sounds exactly the same. There's no variation, no interesting riffs or vocals, no catchiness, nothing. Hell, with the shitty guitar tone and artificial sounding drums there's barely even any heaviness here. I'm sorry, but I don't want to break someones skull with my elbow to a 12 year old's guitar tone with a sprinkler under it, and that's what slam and deathcore should both make you want to do.
At the end of the day, slam and deathcore need to stay more separate from this. It's cool to have some slams in your deathcore (like early Whitechapel and Suicide Silence did, very well I might add) but the genres have different goals. Slam is all about unending, uncompromising brutality that just mindlessly bludgeons you for the duration of the album or EP or however you're listening to it, while deathcore's brutality usually comes from the varied sonic assault, where it switches from trem riffs over blasting to slams to breakdowns to more trem riffs to maybe even a clean section on some of the more adventurous stuff. But slamcore doesn't do any of that. It's not slam, but it tries to apply the slam formula to deathcore, which just doesn't translate well, because the genres are heavy and brutal in completely different ways.
This album is NOT worth your time.
20/100
Standout track: None, they're all exactly the same
