Guys… I just have to… okay listen

I picked up the Lighting Thief while in was at a Target with my mom while I was in 8th grade. I hated reading. I hated it. I’d rather do a multiplication table test then partake in popcorn reading (if you know you know, and if you know how much I HATE math that means something).

I’m sitting here right now post-episode 8 (yes I did cry like a baby thank you for asking) watching the behind the scenes documentary A Hero’s Journey.

8th grade me could have NEVER imagined the journey PJO would take. Or the journey I would take in the years of The Lightning Thief to the Sun and the Star, all the way to a freaking faithful series adaptation.

PJO introduced me to fandom. I remember seeking out PJO fan fiction because The Lost Hero came out, there was no Percy, and it was going to be a year long wait to figure out where this “other camp” was. I remember finding every Viria fan art I could find. It’s not even funny how many times over I’ve watched the Viria “How Far We’ve Come” music art video since the drop of episode 1

PJO taught me to love reading. PJO lead me to Hunger Games, Legend and The Young Elites, Rot & Ruin, The Hate U Give, An Ember in the Ashes, Born A Crime, Island of Sea Women, Alex Rider, A Woman of No Importance, Skyhunter, Eragon, Barrackkn: The Story of the Last “Black Cargo”, The Sun is Also A Star, Revolution for Dummies, and so so so so many more. It’s because of PJO that I have flown on the backs of dragons, won and lost revolutions, been to the ends of Tartarus and Isihogo (Twice!), saw the world through a spy’s eyes, been the villain, been the hero, and lived more lives than one is allowed to live in one life.

That 8th grader in Target had no idea what she was getting herself into. And I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Thank you Uncle Rick. Thank you to the whole Disney+ Team that made this season reality.

August 2023 Reading Wrap Up

I only read 5 books in August, and while I started off the month strong, finishing my summer semester of grad school + starting the fall semester really kicked my butt. I read some good books, but wish I had had more time. September is probably going to have even less reading time too :(

1.Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros (3/5 stars). This is the very popular fantasy romance of this summer. I felt very hot and cold on this book, and while there were parts I liked, there were also parts I did not like. I think I'm going to read book 2 when it comes out later this fall, since I liked the twist at the end, and I see potential growth for the series. Adult high fantasy.

2.The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow (3/5 stars). I finally got around to reading this, and while it was enjoyable, it is by no means my new favorite thing. I do really like Harrow's writing style, but I felt like this was a little long at points. I'm very excited about Starling House later in October. Historical Fantasy.

3.Skyhunter by Marie Lu (4/5 stars). This was a good ya dystopian sci-fi/fantasy story. It reminded me a bit of Legend and it brought in some really unique worldbuilding, even though I thought it was a bit predictable at times. I plan to pick up the sequel as soon as it is released in paperback, and I'll read just about anything Marie Lu writes. YA dystopian fantasy.

4.11/22/63 by Stephen King (5/5 stars). This is the second novel I've read by King, and I was not disappointed. I had such a good time reading this doorstopper of a novel, and found the historical details, characters, and relationships to be my favorite parts. The ending of Stephen King books are never really happy, never really sad, but just hit this bittersweet spot that leaves me in a book hangover. Historical alternate history.

5.The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman (5/5 stars). This is one of the only works by Gaiman I hadn't read yet, so when I saw a copy at a used book sale, I grabbed it. Gaiman is really just one of my favorite writers of all time, and I think he's brilliant. I really liked the story and some of the themes this book touches on. Middle grade fantasy.

That's it! I unfortunately did not get around to a nonfiction this month, and I started reading The Fifth Season, but I haven't finished it yet. I hope September will be a better reading month, but I'm going to be very busy, so I sort of doubt it.

Greetings fellow Marie Lu fans I have started Skyhunter and I think I can confidently now say that I am an absolute slut for her books.

My thoughts so far under thr cut

Aramin is fruity as hell. And I swear to god if I'm right about him just like every other gay character in the Luniverse I will become my choir director's microwave during alto sectionals.

Talin is hot. I love Talin. So much.

Speaking of Talin she reminds me of this one friend I had when I was little who was deaf and mute, and looks almost exactly like her description and it's making me incredibly nostalgic.

I feel like something will happen with one of the Ghosts? That is vague as fuck and I'm sorry but. There's definitely gonna be That Specific Ghost imo.

Talin's mom is probably gonna die midstory

Her Shield is probably gonna get killed imo. (SHIELD? AS IN WARC-)

Fuck okay the Ghosts are horrifying creatures that will haunt me in my sleep but holy shit why are they so cool??? I can draw that shit.

No but I love this book already. If this replaces Warcross as my main obsession and forces me to phase out of it I will be so sad but I love love love this book.
