Jackal 101: Here’s the intel
Tumblr media
Just as with any good thriller, details are rolling out slowly, deliberately — and intriguingly— on the Sky TV/Peacock 10-part series, The Day of the Jackal, slated for release late in 2024. Here’s what’s out there about the series, in which Eddie Redmayne both plays the lead as the cold-blooded political assassin and serves as an executive producer.
A few observations of our own:
•Filming has been seen largely in Hungary and Croatia, with a brief stop in London’s Camden Locks.
•Eddie has made references to learning some Spanish, and he was seen in Cadiz with members of the production team last April.
•Other prep apparently included him taking a course in stunt driving. Altogether, the stunt team is listed as having 14 members.
•The cast and crew, as unfolding on the Internet Movie Database, is vast. Among the other behind-the-scenes credits, we can see drone photography, prostheses (Jackal’s disguises?), dialect coaching, animal wrangling, an armorer (weaponry/ammo), military presence, and an intimacy coordinator (sexual content).
Share what you find interesting about the production, once you peruse these sources:

Written by BAFTA-winning team Laurence Rickard & Martha Howe-Douglas (Ghosts, Horrible Histories) with Chris McCausland, hilarity and hijinks will commence on production this month at Sky Studios Elstree with the special set to air on Sky and NOW this Christmas.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chris McCausland & Lee Mack to star in Sky Original festive special ‘Bad Tidings’ [x]
Rebekah Staton, Sarah Alexander and Ben Crompton join the cast as production commences at Sky Studios Elstree.
Chris McCausland (The Wonders of the World I Can't See) and Lee Mack (Doctor Who, Inside No. 9, Brassic) star in Sky Original ‘Bad Tidings’, a mischievous festive special about two perpetually feuding neighbours in Stockport who become unlikely heroes, saving their street from notorious burglars with wacky booby traps and Great British banter.
Joining the cast alongside McCausland and Mack are Rebekah Staton, Sarah Alexander, Ben Crompton, Emily Coates, Josiah Eloi, Millie Kiss, Tupele Dorgu, Sunil Patel, Susan Kyd and Donna Preston.
‘Bad Tidings’ follows a tradition of successful festive Sky Originals loved by Sky customers and star a wealth of British talent. Last year, ‘The Heist Before Christmas’ starring James Nesbitt, Timothy Spall and Laura Donnelly, was the biggest rating Sky Original of 2023 and followed 2022’s ‘Christmas Carole’ staring Suranne Jones, and 2021’s ‘The Amazing Mr Blunden’ staring Simon Callow, Tamsin Greig and Mark Gatiss.
This year’s Sky Original Christmas special revolves around grumpy home-security expert Neil (Mack) and his neighbour Scott (McCausland), who insists on keeping his Christmas lights illuminated all-year-round. And mixing up their bins, criticising Neil’s ‘project’ car and generally winding him up. Basically, Scott’s a git. He’s also blind and all the other neighbours think he’s great.
When Scott is appointed head of the Neighbourhood Watch, Neil is the only one to question his suitability for the role. Their tit-for-tat argument culminates in Neil triggering a power-cut across the entire street. On Christmas Eve.
Everyone is forced to evacuate, and Neil and Scott are left alone and on guard. But the local crime family decide to rob every house on the street in a single night, and the pair must set aside their differences to defeat them. They’ve got no lights, no cameras, no alarms and one of them is blind. Which might just be an advantage…
Chris McCausland said: “Talk about a back of an envelope idea that has got out of hand, we are now making a Christmas comedy film and it's going to be awesome. I can't wait to get up to some hilarious mayhem with Lee and bring some festive spirit into people's living rooms this Christmas!”
Lee Mack added: “I love Chris McCausland, I love the script and I Iove Christmas. Where do I sign?”
‘Bad Tidings’ is written by Laurence Rickard & Martha Howe-Douglas with Chris McCausland, and is produced by Sky Studios. The film is directed by Tim Kirkby with Adnan Ahmed from Sky Studios producing. Anil Gupta Executive Produces for Sky Studios. NBCUniversal Global TV Distribution handles international sales on behalf of Sky Studios.

News of "The Day of the Jackal" series!
Úrsula Corberó, Charles Dance, Richard Dormer Join Eddie Redmayne in ‘The Day of the Jackal’ Series. (THR, February 23, 2024)
Additional new cast members for the large-scale assassin show for Sky and Peacock, which also stars Lashana Lynch, include Chukwudi Iwuji, Lia Williams, Eleanor Matsuura and Jonjo O’Neill.
Eddie Redmayne and Lashana Lynch will be joined by Úrsula Corberó, known for her role as Tokyo in Netflix hit Money Heist, Charles Dance (Game of Thrones, The Crown) and Richard Dormer (Fortitude, Game of Thrones) in the upcoming TV adaptation of The Day of the Jackal for Sky and Peacock.
Corberó will play Nuria, “someone at the heart of The Jackal’s personal life, entirely unaware of who he truly is,” while Dance will feature as Timothy Winthrop, and Dormer will play a character called Norman.
Also joining the cast are Chukwudi Iwuji (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Split) as Osita Halcrow, Lia Williams (The Capture, The Crown) as Isabel Kirby, Khalid Abdalla (The Crown, The Kite Runner) as Ulle Dag Charles, Eleanor Matsuura (The Walking Dead, I Used To Be Famous) as Zina Jansone, Jonjo O’Neill (Andor, Bad Sisters) as Edward Carver, and Sule Rimi (Classified, Andor) as Paul Pullman.
Redmayne plays the famous fictional assassin in the original series based on the Frederick Forsyth novel and award-winning 1973 film adaptation of the same name from Universal Pictures. The star is also executive producing the show.
The Day of the Jackal is being billed by the producers as a “bold, modern reimagining of the beloved and respected novel and film.” While staying true to the DNA of the original story, which was set in 1962 and based on attempts to assassinate French president Charles de Gaulle, this contemporary drama will delve deeper into the chameleon like “antihero” at the heart of the story in a “high octane, cinematic, globetrotting ‘cat and mouse’ thriller,” set amidst the turbulent geo-political landscape of our time.

Cécile Frot-Coutaz, CEO of Sky Studios and chief content officer, said on Thursday that the series is “going to be a massive show for us,” adding: “This is probably one of the most ambitious or large-scale production that we’ve mounted. It’s an epic action thriller.”

Lots and lots and lots of Eddie
Tumblr media
…if we’re to believe this Daily Mirror preview of Sky TV’s lineup for 2024 that has Eddie Redmayne’s “Day of the Jackal” series at 10 parts (as do some hints on IMDb).
No word yet on the actual release date of the global thriller, which co-stars Lashana Lynch, Ursula Corberó + Charles Dance:
“This contemporary reimagining of the iconic thriller stars Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne as The Jackal, an unrivalled and highly elusive lone assassin, and No Time to Die’s Lashana Lynch as Bianca, a tenacious MI6 agent in a relentless, global pursuit to catch him. The 10-part thriller is based on Frederick Forsyth’s seminal novel and its 1973 film adaptation.
“While remaining true to the DNA of the original, this new drama will delve deeper into the chameleon like ‘anti-hero’ at the heart of the story, in a high octane, cinematic, globetrotting ‘cat and mouse’ thriller, set amidst the turbulent geo-political landscape of our time. The Day of the Jackal is written and adapted by Top Boy creator and writer Ronan Bennett, with award-winning Game of Thrones, Luther and Boardwalk Empire director Brian Kirk serving as lead director. The Day of the Jackal will premiere on Sky Atlantic.”
