Fanfic Writers: Director’s Cut

I'm gonna use this as an opportunity to gab about my SNK Figure Skating AU, which like my Captain and Commander AU, is another thing I've wanted to write for years but never got around to. It helps now that I'm actually super into Figure Skating so I can imbue the universe with more in-depth knowledge of the sport.

The whole gist is that all the characters are figure skaters who train at the same rink.

The ships I've written so far in the AU are Aruani, Jeankasa, and Pokkopiku. While Jean and Mikasa are ice dancers and Porco and Pieck do pairs, Annie and Armin are just two singles skaters admiring each other from afar. Armin's status as a gravity-defying twink has bewitched her, body and soul.

That's another thing I like about figure skating is that the people who excel in singles tend to be on the smaller side, meaning that it makes sense for Armin and Historia and Annie become some of the stronger skaters in their rink. I'm straight-up making Historia call herself the "Quad Goddess" for managing to successfully add two quads to her arsenal of jumps, especially at her age.

There are other character dynamics that I wanna explore. For example, Historia is coached by Nanaba and acknowledges that her coach will parent her more than her actual family. Annie is coached by Zeke, but Zeke tends to put more attention onto Eren in Singles or Pokkopiku in Pairs. Sasha and Connie are another duo of ice dancers who are rinkmates and rivals to Jean and Mikasa, but outside competition manage to remain close friends. Ymir ice dances with Bertholdt, but spends most of her time off-ice fawning over her tiny lil GF.

Aside from character interactions I'm also having a ball describing the skating styles of each character and making references to IRL routines. I don't go too in-depth, but when I mention that Jean and Mikasa are ice dancing to songs from Moulin Rouge! most FS girlies will know what I mean.

Or if I say that Porco and Pieck skated to Barbie Girl using every banned move in the book there's a routine for that, too.

The last thing I'll say about this AU is that I just love figure skating and synthesizing my genuine passion for the sport into a fandom I like it just fun.

Oh, and I just need to explain that the reason why I didn't make it so Mikasa skated with Eren or Armin is because they both wanted to focus on Singles while she wants to pursue Ice Dance for tragic backstory reasons. They're all still joined at the hip because off-ice figure skaters tend to be very buddy-buddy with each other and it's super sweet to see.

What is each of the ducks love language?

So, in general I feel like the whole group uses teasing as a love language. However, i assume you're talking about more traditional love languages. So, let's cover those!

Dwayne: I'm starting with our sunshine boy! Dwayne strikes me as the type of person to have the love language of acts of service. I wanted to say he was physical touch, but he doesn't really do a lot of touching in the movies. However, if you see how he talks to people he likes. Plus, the way he helps Connie in D2. I feel like he always tries to show people he loves them by doing stuff for them.

Adam: I want to say Adam is quality time. He does do things for people he cares about. However, for him, he really values just the time he gets to spend with people he cares about. I feel like this is because Adam, a lot of his life, and this is just my opinion, was valued for what he could do for other people. So he naturally falls into the act of service role, but he would much rather spend time with people he loves over anything else.

Dean: Dean's love language, I think, is physical touch. I say that because of how he interacts with Fulton. In D1, Fulton didn't really seem to touch other people. However, with Dean, they're always doing their handshakes and their chest bumps, etc. So I feel like that's more his thing. I could also see him with Acts of Service because he's always willing to defend his friends.

Fulton: Now, well, I do believe Fulton is okay with physical touch because of Dean. I don't think that's his love language. I think his love language is acts of service. I said that because in D1. His contributions before he joins the team is helping the team. He gets the Hawks to leave the Ducks alone. At Han's shop, he helps Charlie get the stick that's on display. When Tammy gets knocked down, he goes after McGill. He only fights or defends when he has to and only for his friends.

Charlie: Charlie's love language for me seems to be words of affirmation. He's always ready with a kind word or some kind of encouragement. He is like the ultimate cheerleader for everyone he loves. That's why I think Charlie's love language fits with words of affirmation the most. Also given that he wears his heart on his sleeve that seems to be the obvious one for somebody like that. Because he will tell you that he cares about you cuz that's just who he is.

Luis: Luis strikes me as somebody who has the love language of gift giving. I feel like he doesn't really understand how to express his emotions that well. However, he is really good at finding the perfect item for a certain person. He is such a good gift giver because he knows the person deeper than he realizes he does.

Guy: Guy is 100% quality time. Although he is really good at creating a romantic atmosphere. That is not as important to him as having the time set aside for the person he wants to spend it with. He really values his friends and his girlfriend. So he feels like the type of person that would want to show them that anytime they're together. Plus, Guy strikes me as a person who can kind of be effortlessly romantic. However, that is only because he sees the value in someone's time and wants them to know he sees that.

Jesse: I feel like Jesse has the love language of Acts of Service just because he knows words are cheap. Like for Jesse, he knows how easy it is for somebody to kind of fake sincerity. However, it is much harder to fake, showing you care about somebody. For him, the actions are so much more important than anything else.

Kenny: For Kenny, I feel like his love language is quality time. I say this because a lot of the times, Kenny is kind of sidelined. Like I love him, but a lot of times, he appears to play a background character. So I feel like he would really appreciate somebody who takes the time to notice him and takes the time to value him outside of his skills as a figure skater. So that's why I chose quality time.

Goldberg: Goldberg, I feel like has one of two. He's either words of affirmation because he really enjoys being praised. Or he's quality time because he obviously isn't much of a skater. However, he stays on the team because he wants to spend time with his friends. Which fits very much in the quality time love language. So it could go either way.

Connie: Connie is a tough one because I feel like she can fit into a couple of different categories. However, I'm going to settle on words of affirmation. Connie and Charlie are generally the same when it comes to like really bringing up their friends. Especially with the other girls Connie is always on their side. However, like Jesse, I could see her also falling into acts of service because of the same reason. She knows words can be deceiving, so you have to show her that you mean what you say.

Averman: For better or worse, Averman has a way with words. Therefore, I think that his love language is words of affirmation. But in a different way, he likes it when people show their love in a snarky sort of way. Like, I feel like he would swoon if someone said I love you, but you're also a pain in the ass. Just words of affirmation but a little bit skewed.

Julie: The last two are the hardest, in my opinion. Julie, I had to think about for a second, and I think I want to put her in gift giving. Outside of Connie, she doesn't really do much physical touch. And the only time I've seen her do anything like words of affirmation was when Scooter was like "good game." Though I hardly think that counts. She could be acts of service and quality time. However I settled on gift giving because of a headcanon that I have. My headcanon is Julie like her actress is a really good baker. So, she shows her love to people by giving them treats. I think it's a really sweet way for somebody who's a little bit harder at expressing themselves to show you that they love you.

Russ: Russ seems to thrive on gentle ribbing as an act of endearment. Like in D3, where you knew he was happy that Charlie was back but he also had to give him a little shit. So, this might fit into words of affirmation. However, it could also fit in quality time. However, I honestly think his love language is just quip-giving. He is very good at it.

First things first, he’s actually really smart

He just acts dumb because it’s fun

The high of the season’s final competition is still buzzing in her veins, even when it’s been days since she and Jean arrived home from Tallinn. But it’s a manageable kind of buzz — a sensation that puts a spring in her step, yet never grows strong enough to risk clouding her judgment. It’s something that allows her to breathe, even just for a moment, knowing full well that the emotional and physical turmoil of the last few months had led to something. 

Mikasa’s heard about athletes who have fallen into despair after a major achievement, usually in the form of a mourning period during the loss of such a high. Yet as she heads to her usual cafe on her way to the rink, as she sips black coffee while traversing the sidewalk in the early sun of spring, she feels neutral. Maybe a bit happier than usual, but all in all it feels like a normal day. 

When she crosses the parking lot of the skating club she sees Sasha. Just like every other day the brunette smiles and waves as she gets out of her car. 

Sasha is always in such good spirits, but today she practically skips towards Mikasa, nearly glomping on the younger girl with an unexpected hug. It’s only been a few days since they last saw one another, yet Sasha is as chipper as can be. 

Sasha’s arm links around hers and Mikasa lets her, then the duo of ice dancers head towards the building. For someone who came in fourth at Junior Worlds, Sasha is absolutely ecstatic over her rinkmates out-skating her and Connie. 

As to be expected, Sasha chats Mikasa’s ear off. She talks on and on about what Mikasa and Jean winning gold means for their dinky little rink, how it will solidify their skating club as a facility that has both nurtured and created champions, and how podiuming Worlds is a triumphant end to any season. 

Since Sasha playing the role of motormouth is nothing unusual, Mikasa only half listens as they walk through the concourse. At least Sasha brings up the accomplishments made by their other rinkmates, less she only ever discusses her own discipline. Armin’s silver in singles had been an unexpected win, having fought his way from sixth to second between each program, utilizing his quad toe and salchow to make his mark in the free. Porco and Pieck’s bronze is worth lauding as well, as they managed to medal despite fumbling their synchronized double axels. 

As Sasha rambles, Mikasa is tempted to help her rinkmate focus on the actual purpose of today. With Worlds behind them, the only thing they have left to do are a handful of gala shows, rehearsals of which are happening on the nearby ice. To some it’s an opportunity to keep skating and performing, but for others it’s a thank you for all the support given to the skaters throughout the season. And for Mikasa, it’s a healthy mix of both. 

But before the duo of ice dancers can even enter the icy realm, the two notice something peculiar about the hallways. Just outside of the rink is a medley of wall-mounted photographs — framed images that depict the various skaters of the rink who had medalled at competitions. Most of the athletes are at the senior level, but as of lately more skaters of the junior level have had the honor of being immortalized. 

So when Mikasa and Sasha pass by a few photographs they know haven’t been there before, the two stop walking and look over. 

“Oh sweet!” Sasha is first to exclaim. “They already have these up.” 

She unlinks her arm and steps forward, smiling at the new images on the wall. Mikasa does the same, looking fondly at the photo of her and Jean standing proudly atop the podium.

In the image she’s smiling, happily holding up the gold medal that now resides in her home. While her expression is overjoyed, it is still tinged with the slightest amount of disbelief, her mind still trying to acknowledge the feat far after the final scores had been announced. Jean is standing behind her, resting a hand on her shoulder as he holds his own commemoration for his work. She can almost hear the image, whether it be the memory of the applauding crowd, the snapping of photographs, or her partner whispering “Holy fuck, we did it” just behind her ear.

A different framed photograph depicts Jean and Mikasa in the midst of their free dance, the image in question immortalizing a curve lift, the one where Jean glides across the ice in a besti squat and Mikasa stands on his thigh with a single skate. She’s still not sure which part of the lift had been the most difficult — the way she snakes herself around his neck and shoulders before arriving in the final position, the stability Jean requires to secure his arm around her leg, or making it all look effortless. For a sport that consists of dancing around on knife-shoes, they certainly like to go above and beyond. 

Before Mikasa can reminisce about the final dance for too long, as well as risk getting into self-critiques, she hears Sasha speak up again.

“Hey, lookit!”

Mikasa turns her head to the right and sees Sasha standing near a trophy case, the brunette’s eyes affixed to a certain image. She steps over to see a photograph that she almost cannot recognize, even though it’s her in the frame. 

Despite coming in fourth, the ice dance team that is Braus/Springer are commemorated alongside their rinkmates. One photograph on the wall depicts Connie and Jean on the ice — Jean has Connie lifted onto his shoulder, a feat that brings a smile to both skater’s faces, and the two glide across the rink in front of rows and rows of empty seats. If Mikasa recalls the picture had been taken during the gala rehearsals, when the various skaters were practicing for the final group number. 

But the photo that Sasha is focused on is different. Mikasa gets a closer look to see a picture taken on the day of the free dance. 

She sees herself and Sasha at the kiss-and-cry. Despite the name of the place and the medal ceremony being minutes away, Mikasa is smiling and so is Sasha. The two are hugging, though Mikasa is the one awkwardly holding her hands to her chest while Sasha’s arms are around her shoulders. Their gazes are meeting and Sasha’s mouth is open, obviously in the midst of running her mouth, as per usual. 

For a moment Mikasa tries to remember what Sasha had been saying. The audience in the stands had been so loud that perhaps she had forgotten, but if she had to guess then perhaps it had been something along the lines of “Holy shit, Girl!” or “I’m so fucking proud of you!” 

It’s a position that they’ve been in before, a side-effect of being rinkmates and rivals for years. Perhaps there’s something about the feeling imbuing the venue once the event officially ends, when the scores are released and the skaters can finally breathe. At a certain point it doesn’t even matter what the actual results are, just that the skaters can relax. 

With the image of her and Sasha’s post-competition embrace now immortalized in their rink, Mikasa is thankful. It’s certainly a more flattering image than the ones taken when the scores were announced. Mikasa still isn’t sure if it was her or Jean who cried harder when they realized they came in first, though it was certainly her who sobbed into his shoulder. 

With a tender look Mikasa glances at Sasha and says, “It’s like we won the Olympics.” 

The warmth in Sasha’s eyes is quickly sapped. She sharply bumps her friend with her elbow. 

“Hey!” she says in a scolding, yet playful tone. “Not yet!” 

Mikasa lets out a hum, which is the closest she ever gets to a laugh, and links arms with Sasha again. The duo of ice dancers head over to the rink, knowing well that the mark they’ve made on their world will be remembered.

Things I've noticed in D3: The Mighty Ducks Part 1

I have watched these movies a few dozen times over the past 2 weeks and these are just some things I noticed.

When they are accepting their scholarships, Portman is with them. I missed him at first.

The Dean puts his arm around Charlie and Russ. While Charlie appears unbothered; Russ shows repulsion in a way.

So, Bombay obviously told Casey about the job offer which makes me question how long he actually knew.

In D2, it's mentioned Charlie had a step-dad. What happened to him? Is he dead?

I love that the new ducks are on time and the old ducks aren't. Also, when in the group, Luis seems less sleazy than he is later.

The old ducks are seen skating in, and the formation is interesting. Averman in front, Connie and Guy next. Then you have Charlie and Adam, which, tbh makes me smile. Lastly, Fulton and Goldberg make sense cause they are technically the most inexperienced skaters.

Through his whole off trail trip, Goldberg manages to skate backward, downstairs, and through water without falling. For not being a skater, that's pretty impressive.

He also does like 4 spins after losing the hose but still stays standing. Like I said impressive. Also, why didn't he just brake? He's not Luis. He knows how to brake.

Also, when they go off the bridge and land, he stays standing. Face it Goldberg you're a skater, and damn good one.

I love how when they land, they automatically form the V again. Is that a subconscious thing, or did they just decide it one day.

I'm certain they just showed the horses as the Ducks skated in, so we wouldn't question where Dwayan found a horse. However, I didn't question it anyway. I thought it was just something he could do.

Poor Adam looks traumatized. Like he's questioning his whole life. "I was a good student, I grew up in a well todo place. How did I end up here?!"

Luis' look of exasperation is my favorite thing. He is so done with them.

You can tell the new ducks love the old cause they do facepalm, but it is with affection and not anger. Like, "Look at these dumbasses. Those are our dumbasses!"

I love how Charlie calls the other students prepsters. Like Charlie, you're from Minneapolis, Minnesota. It's not exactly the wrong side of the tracks, my dude!

Dean Buckley is unnecessarily creepy but I also love him ngl.

On skates, it looks like Adam and Charlie look to the be the tallest. With Dwayne being next. Interesting.

Adam always looks like he's one moment away from fight, flight, or freeze. Which is relatable, honestly.

Dwayne smacking Averman is too funny for some reason. Also, Averman sighs after like he's thinking, "I can't win."

Ken has been hanging out with Dwayne too much. That move was strictly showboating.

I love how Julie is so encouraging when she's in the goal. Constantly hyping up her team even when they miss or she blocks. Queen shit tbh.

☁️ - whats your nighttime routine? is it easy for you guys to fall asleep or does it take a while? do you have anything you do before bed, like reading or journaling?

Sukuna: we don't really have a routine, nor do we do anything before bed, usually... wink wink nudge nudge. i'm usually in bed before him but i won't fall asleep until he's with me. typically i fall asleep first bc he refuses to sleep if i'm still awake, but also he's very warm so it's really easy to fall asleep when he's holding me <33

Nanami: Nanami is usually nose deep in a book before bed, while i sit there and accompany him. aside from that, we don't have a set-in-stone routine. he actually falls asleep pretty fast (poor guy he's so tired), but he tries to stay awake until i fall asleep. sometimes he doesn't though, and then he feels bad for it, but it's really not an issue. (he looks very peaceful when he sleeps, it's quite a sight for sore eyes)

Connie: skincare buddies, i've already said this (that post was self indulgent LMAO). and then after that we'll cuddle in bed for what feels like hours bc Connie never falls asleep immediately. we stay up for quite a bit just talking about our days or something until we fall asleep

🎠- what do you do for leisure/entertainment? do you go places, play games together, or simply watch a movie and cuddle?

Sukuna: Sukuna's quick to wanna take me out somewhere, but it doesn't matter where. he always asks what i wanna do, to which i say i don't mind, and then we're sat there trying to figure it out. we go on walks, though, typically. it clears our minds and helps to pass time so we do that when we wanna get out but don't know what to do

Nanami: cafe dates !!! Nanami is always willing to get a cup of coffee and a pastry, it doesn't matter what time of day it is. oh we also visit the museum !! i actually really enjoy museums and art galleries, as does he, so sometimes we'll take a trip to one when we want a day out

Connie: depends on how we're feeling that day. sometimes we go out and sometimes we stay home. if we're home, we're usually binging some show or watching movies. if we go out, it's most likely a little lunch outing or he drags me to the skate park (bc yes, he's a skater in every universe)

🌷- do you two like to spend time outside? or would you rather stay inside together?

Sukuna: yes we go on walks! it's not all the time, but it does happen and we do enjoy it. Sukuna isn't as complicated as he makes himself out to be, and just going out to enjoy the weather is enough for him if it means spending time with me

Nanami: Nanami actually prefers to spend time out, he'd rather not be cooped up in the house all the time despite what he may seem like. we do still spend a lot of time inside, but it also just depends on his mood, and mine. basically he's not opposed to going out and doing things if it means making memories

Connie: Connie always wants to go out, while i would rather stay in. i'm not against going out, obviously, but he literally never wants to be home and i just don't have the energy for that sometimes. he gets all pouty if i say no though, so i do end up accompanying him in whatever endeavors he has planned
