the staircases to the girls' dorms didn't turn into a slide, and mary's heart jolted with happiness

in her fifth year, she met emmeline vance, who was a trans girl (she finally had found the name for it, and it made her so happy) too, and something platonic blossomed between them, a bond of likelihood and differences that they loved at each other
