Extremely funny to watch a movie that was directly influenced by a different, much better movie. Like congrats you were inspired to make something Worse

FINDING LOVE IN ALL THE WRONG PLACES
SHUFFLING THROUGH PRETTY FACES
I’M GLAD YOU HAD A NICE TIME
BUT RIGHT NOW I NEED MY SPACE BITCH
I DON’T WANNA WASTE YOUR TIME
AND I DEFINITELY DON’T WANNA WASTE MINE
IF I DON’T FEEL THE VIBE I’LL CURB YOU LIKE A STOP SIGN

Singin’ in the Rain. That is MY movie!
Fist-pumping the air for this!
So, this movie wholeheartedly deserves the no. 1 spot for the Best Musical on the AFI List, but not solely for its music and elaborate dance sequences; it encapsulated and IMHO, also sugarcoated a very real moment of history with very real reactions to something so powerful and the themes that are evoked with it.
So... things that I liked- the fear of being left behind with a new development (as in the case of Gene Kelly's character), the underestimation that audiences will accept you for what you are known as, and won't judge you for not adapting to their interests, how onscreen romances influence the actors' personal lives which then influence the entertainment factor of a movie.
Things that haven't aged that well (at least for me)- the relationship between Don and Cathy (Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds) cause I really hoped for a slow burn as seen in The Artist (2011) and often felt that Don had more chemistry with Cyd Charisse's character; the lack of empathy for Lina Lamont's character, but this is partly due to watching Babylon (2022), a counterpoint to this film as well as plotting research about the transition from silent to sound films for a project in my MLitt and learning the very real struggles of actors in that period.
To conclude, Singin in the Rain is the example of a perfect musical- elaborate dance sequences that enthrall you, a story that captures reality and fiction, and the film's ability to remain as a testament to how influential it can be for other films (see Barbie, La La Land and other films).
Thanks once again for the ask! : )

Fuck it Benophie (technically Ben/Henry/Sophie polyamory) Singing in the Rain AU except it’s period accurate to Hollywood in the 1920s here’s a taste
(And also I’m pulling from Babylon and The Great Gatsby and Black Swans by Eve Babitz and my own thoughts about cinema and the American dream and there’s background Kate/Anthony/Simon and Daphne/Cressida basically everyone is gay)

Movie opinions : Babylon
Tl;dr : Hollywood loves making movies about Hollywood. I don't love Hollywood but I love movies. This was a pretty good movie.
Tumblr media
My (fairly spoiler-free) synopsis :
It's the mid 1920s and Hollywood is at its peak of chaos, drugs, decadence, making those silent movie work. Young puppy-eyed Mexican guy works for a big producer and dreams of working on set. He's actually extremely handsome and looks better than any star in the movie but no one comments on it for some reason.
Tumblr media
Guy meets girl at a sex and drug fueled party. They do not make out but the chemistry is pretty great. She's a manic pixie dream girl but the sex crazed / no man can control her / actually I had a difficult childhood so now I do coke kind. He's already in love with her, she's in love with her dreams.
Tumblr media
They both try to climb and make it happen in Hollywood as icons rise and fall, movies start having sound, the industry tries to reinvent its morality and (queer) POC try their best to make it out of there without losing themselves too much.
Tumblr media
The pros :
Has some great photography, plays with colors beautifully, clearly well thought out cinematography. Actors can act. First party scene between the two leads is a bisexual dream. Soundtrack is really fun, I wanted to keep listening to it once I got home. Knows how to make chaos funny and has some funny and touching moments. The thread of references to Singing in the Rain is beautiful and as a fan of that movie I really appreciated it. Doesn't shy away from the racism, homophobia and sexism of the industry at that time, including by having two smart and level headed POC characters (a really talented Asian lesbian and an incredible Black trumpet player).
Tumblr media
The cons :
A lot of clichés with our two main characters : she's super talented from the beginning, has that star quality from pure chaos and sex, but is actually broken and sad and addicted to drug and in need of rescuing (though the ending somewhat redeems that). But most importantly, even though I love him, our male lead is very very much a "nice guy" that tries to change her to make her into his ideal mate, stays fixated on her and gets mad when she doesn't actually change for him.
Also the movie is 3 hours long and you start reaaaally feeling it in the last 40 minutes, there are arcs that were fairly cool but really didnt bring anything, felt like the director's way of saying "yeah I know I'm so dark", and they should have just wrapped it up. The ending had a good concept but really took it too far.
Tumblr media
Overall : like 3 stars. I'm glad I watched it, would recommend it to some people, but I wasn't blown away. It was a pretty good time though.

BABYLON is a decadent and devilish delight.
Damien Chazelle's BABYLON is a lurid, hilarious journey through Hollywood's wild past. #babylon #moviereview #Bradpitt #margotrobbbie #Babylon2022 #Bestof2022
2022; Written and directed by Damien Chazelle; starring Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Diego Calva. 188 minutes. In theatres December 23rd. Babylon is the grit and gristle to the grin and glitter of Singing In The Rain. Wherein Singing in the Rain is a relentless positive glance of Hollywood of a certain era, Babylon is the darkly comic underside of the same coin. Damien Chazelle’s take on…
