"Namibia is the driest country in Sub-Saharan Africa, and home to two of the world’s most ancient deserts, the Kalahari and the Namib. The capital, Windhoek, is sandwiched between them, 400 miles away from the nearest perennial river and more than 300 miles away from the coast. Water is in short supply.
It’s hard to imagine life thriving in Windhoek, yet 477,000 people call it home, and 99 per cent of them have access to drinking water thanks to technology pioneered 55 years ago on the outskirts of the city. Now, some of the world’s biggest cities are embracing this technology as they adapt to the harshest impacts of climate change. But Namibia leads the way.
How did this come about? In the 1950s, Windhoek’s natural resources struggled to cope with a rapidly growing population, and severe water shortages gripped the city. But disaster forced innovation, and in 1968 the Goreangab Water Reclamation Plant in Windhoek became the first place in the world to produce drinking water directly from sewage, a process known as direct potable reuse (DPR).
That may sound revolting, but it’s completely safe. Dr Lucas van Vuuren, who was among those who pioneered Windhoek’s reclamation system, once said that “water should not be judged by its history, but by its quality”. And DPR ensures quality.
This is done using a continuous multi-barrier treatment devised in Windhoek during eight years of pilot studies in the 1960s. This process – which has been upgraded four times since 1968 – eliminates pollutants and safeguards against pathogens by harnessing bacteria to digest the human waste and remove it from the water. This partly mimics what happens when water is recycled in nature, but Windhoek does it all in under 24 hours...
Tumblr media

“We know that we have antibiotics in the water, preservatives from cosmetics, anti-corrosion prevention chemicals from the dishwasher,” Honer explains. “We find them and we remove them.”
Honer adds that online instruments monitor the water continuously, and staff ensure that only drinking water that meets World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines is sent to homes. If any inconsistencies are detected, the plant goes into recycle mode and distribution is halted until correct values are restored.
“The most important rule is, and was, and always will be ‘safety first’,” says Honer.  The facility has never been linked to an outbreak of waterborne disease, and now produces up to 5.5m gallons of drinking water every day – up to 35 per cent of the city’s consumption.
Namibians couldn’t survive without it, and as water shortages grip the planet, Windhoek’s insights and experience are more important than ever.
Interest from superpowers across the globe
In recent years, delegations from the US, France, Germany, India, Australia, Singapore, and the United Arab Emirates have visited Windhoek seeking solutions to water shortages in their own countries.
Megadrought conditions have gripped the US since 2001, and the Colorado River – which provides 40 million people with drinking water – has been running at just 50 per cent of its traditional flow. As a result, several states including Texas, California, Arizona and Colorado are beginning to embrace DPR.
Troy Walker is a water reuse practice leader at Hazen and Sawyer, an environmental engineering firm helping Arizona to develop its DPR regulations. He visited Windhoek last year. “It was about being able to see the success of their system, and then looking at some of the technical details and how that might look in a US facility or an Australian facility,” he said. “[Windhoek] has helped drive a lot of discussion in industry. [Innovation] doesn’t all have to come out of California or Texas.”
Tumblr media
Pictured: The internal pipes and workings of Namibia's DPR plant. As water becomes scarcer in some parts, countries are looking to DPR for solutions. Image: Margaret Courtney-Clarke
Namibia has also helped overcome the biggest obstacle to DPR – public acceptance. Disgust is a powerful emotion, and sensationalist ‘toilet to tap’ headlines have dismantled support for water reuse projects in the past. Unfortunately, DPR’s biggest strength is also its biggest weakness, as the speed at which water can re-enter the system makes it especially vulnerable to prejudice, causing regulators to hesitate. “Technology has never been the reason why these projects don’t get built – it’s always public or political opposition,” says Patsy Tennyson, vice president of Katz and Associates, an American firm that specialises in public outreach and communications.
That’s why just a handful of facilities worldwide are currently doing DPR, with Windhoek standing alongside smaller schemes in the Philippines, South Africa and a hybrid facility in Big Spring, Texas. But that’s all changing. Drought and increased water scarcity worldwide are forcing us to change the way we think about water.
Now, the US is ready to take the plunge, and in 2025, El Paso Water will begin operating the first ‘direct to distribution’ DPR facility in North America, turning up to 10m gallons of wasterwater per day into purified drinking water – twice as much as Windhoek. San Diego, Los Angeles, California, as well as Phoenix, Arizona are also exploring the technology."
Of course, DPR is not a silver bullet in the fight against climate change. It cannot create water out of thin air, and it will not facilitate endless growth. But it does help cities become more climate resilient by reducing their reliance on natural sources, such as the Colorado River.
As other nations follow in Namibia’s footsteps, Windhoek may no longer take the lead after almost six decades in front.
“But Windhoek was the first,” Honer reminds me. “No one can take that away.”"

Million Things to Say, Museum of Contemporary Art and Design (MCAD), Manila, 2018. Image courtesy the Pacita Abad Art Estate.
The exuberant and wide-ranging works of Pacita Abad (US, b. Philippines, 1946–2004) are the subject of the first-ever retrospective spanning the artist’s 32-year career. Abad is best known for her trapuntos, a form of quilted painting made by stitching and stuffing her canvases as opposed to stretching them over a wood frame. During her lifetime, the prolific artist made a vast number of artworks that traverse a diversity of subjects, from colorful masks to intricately constructed underwater scenes to abstract compositions. The exhibition includes more than 100 works—most of which have never been on public view in the United States—showcasing her experiments in different mediums, including textiles, works on paper, costumes, and ceramics. Organized by the Walker in collaboration with Abad’s estate, the presentation celebrates the multifaceted work of an artist whose vibrant visual, material, and conceptual concerns are as urgent today as they were three decades ago.
Abad moved to the United States in 1970 to escape political persecution after leading a student demonstration against the authoritarian Marcos regime. Informed by this experience, she was determined to give visibility to political refugees and oppressed peoples through her art: “I have always believed that an artist has a special obligation to remind society of its social responsibility.” Works from her Immigrant Experience series (1983–1995) highlight the rising multiculturalism of the 1990s. These works call attention to the era’s contradictions and omissions, centering the sufferings and triumphs of people on the periphery of power. The multiplicity of stories referenced in the series include such events as the 1992 Los Angeles riots, the Haitian refugee crisis, and the detention of Mexican migrant workers at the US border, offering an intimate look at lives often obscured by the reductive, xenophobic headlines of the time.
Though she became a US citizen in 1994, Abad lived for several years in a number of countries around the world, including Bangladesh, the Dominican Republic, Indonesia, Kenya, the Philippines, Singapore, and Sudan. Largely self-taught, she interacted with the various artistic communities she encountered on her travels, incorporating a diversity of cultural traditions and techniques—from Korean ink brush painting to Indonesian batik—into her expansive practice. Abad’s global, peripatetic existence is reflected in the portability of her works and in her use of textiles, a medium often associated with female, non-Western labor and historically marginalized as craft.

Marmite is a British savoury food spread based on yeast extract, invented by the German scientist Justus von Liebig. It is made from by-products of beer brewing (lees) and is produced by the British company Unilever. Marmite is a vegan source of B vitamins, including supplemental vitamin B12. A traditional method of use is to spread it very thinly on buttered toast.
Marmite has traditionally been eaten as a savoury spread on bread, toast, savoury biscuits or crackers, and other similar baked products. Owing to its concentrated taste, it is often spread very thinly in combination with butter or margarine. It can be made into a savoury hot drink by adding one teaspoon to a mug of hot water, much like Oxo or Bovril. It is also commonly used to enrich casseroles and stews.
Marmite is often paired with cheese—for example, in a cheese sandwich or a cheese-flavoured biscuit such as Mini Cheddars. In the UK, Starbucks offers a cheese and Marmite panini. There are Marmite-flavored varieties of Walkers Crisps, and of some brands of rice cakes and biscuits.
Marmite has also been used as an ingredient in cocktails, including the Marmite Cocktail and the Marmite Gold Rush.
Celebrity chefs have created signature Marmite-flavored recipes: Nigella Lawson has one for Marmite spaghetti, and Heston Blumenthal has one for Marmite consommé.
In 2020, Marmite launched a campaign on Instagram—“The Great Marmite Experiment”—-encouraging people to share their Marmite-flavored recipes. The many entries in response included roast potatoes, beef Wellington and cookies.
In Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong, Marmite is enjoyed stirred into congee (rice porridge), and in an intensely savory Malaysian dish (local Chinese dish) called Marmite Chicken, consisting of fried pieces of chicken tossed in a Marmite sauce.

June 2023 Review Hunt
So, in honor of the fact we have a shiny new archive and some new folks hanging around to share their talent and skill with us, I’ve decided to run a Review Hunt!  The basic premise being: You write reviews/comments on other peoples’ stories/art/vids, get points and win a prize.  The fan creator gets some very much wanted feedback.  Legitimately everyone wins in this scenario.
Because the new archive really is brand new, new reviews/comments on both it and the original eFiction version of Ad Astra will count.  If you need an account on the old Ad Astra, then DM me on Dis/c/ord or Tumblr (under @sl-walker) because the only way to get one is from the admin panel thanks to spam, and if you get an SQL error from the site, then access it via VPN (which is one of the reasons we’re moving over to otw-archive as software) from a different address.  Singapore works for me, for some reason.
Anyway, here are the relevant links:
Ad Astra (otw-archive) - Until hopefully Monday, remember to put beta. before adastrafanfic.com to use any e-mail links from the archive.  And hopefully the proxy notice will be gone by then, too. Ad Astra (eFiction) - This site will go static-only on September 1st, but if you need/want an account before then for either reviews or posting for posterity, DM me!

Charles is going it France and Kenya later this year... or is rumored to be. Cameron Walker is saying that WK will only do Singapore and William NYC — both of those are private trips, not official ones. Okay if the government doesn’t want to send out royals on official trips, even if the UK would probably benefit of WK predominantly doing small visits to friendly European countries to make them even more friendly after Brexit. Visiting Commonwealth realms should be a priority to Charles and William though. But William hasn’t even done a proper visit to Scotland since last May.
But what I’m wondering about is the lack of state visits. The South African visit was planned before QEII died, but after that it’s been crickets. I don’t buy that the coronation is at fault, they had plenty of time before that or in like June to receive one. I’m in doubt there’ll be one this fall but we’ll see I guess.
France is re-scheduled so i strike that out lol. I'm over rumours but i get security risks..it just doesn't help.
I think i would want Singapore to be longer than Boston..like an actual tour but it won't be. I think Kate needs to start doing the solo international visits again, when was the Denmark one, like last Jan??
The state visits are wild and they still need to reschedule the Japanese one

The Road to Sligo
Said goodbye to Mount Falcon but not before having our last breakfast at the hotel. While having breakfast we met a group of men from Canada and one from Singapore that were on a ten day golf trip. As they said, they were going at it hard, playing 18 or 36 holes everyday for eight straight days. I could not do that! My back is still a little sore from my 27 holes yesterday.
We had a minor emergency we had to get taken care of today, Kim needed her nails done! After striking out at finding a place in Ballina, we drove to our next destination - Sligo. Finding a nail place that did acrylic nails proved harder than anticipated! But a determined Kim Bell was not to be denied and NOT to my great surprise by 1:00p today the nail dilemma had been solved!!
We are staying at a pretty cool hotel called The Glasshouse. It is located next to the Garavogue River that runs through the middle of Sligo. There are many restaurants and pubs that line the river downtown. Walkers is a popular bar and restaurant that we stopped by for a pint of Guinness and some fish and chips.
Sligo has two famous names associated with it. W. B. Yeats, Nobel Peace Prize winning writer and poet and Bram Stoker, writer and creator of Dracula. Learned a lot about both when I went through the W. B Yeats museum while I waited on Kim to take care of her nail emergency!
With no golf today, we found plenty to do just walking around Sligo and checking out some of the local stores that you wouldn’t find in the US or outside of Sligo for that matter.
It was another beautiful sunny and windy day here in Ireland with temps in the mid 60′s. Tomorrow sees temperatures drop back down in the low 50′s when we will be teeing up at County Sligo Golf Club at Rosses Point.
Spending the rest of tonight listening to our son-in-laws baseball team the Anderson University Ravens play in the HCAC Conference tournament. Go Ravens!! Hope everyone is doing well! gb

Young Justice Head Canon 2nd Post (Part 2)
Author’s note: This is the second post of the Young Justice Head Canon second post that I made on my Tumblr Archive Blog.
Plus I am going to do a playlist post on what is on Virgil’s playlist here & my personal blog.
Part 1: https://aggold15hi01.tumblr.com/post/694634628292722688/young-justice-head-canon-2nd-post-part-1
~When it comes to traveling: Cassie always wanted to travel to South Korea ever since how gets excited about anything with South Korea as she also adds Japan as well as Spain, France: Italy; Greece and New Zealand plus Australia (Mainly she wants to go to Queensland and Gold Coast); Brazil and Mexico while Virgil wants to go to Greece, France: Italy; Argentina: Singapore: Malaysia and Oman as well as United Arab Emirates (He didn't want to choose there because of all of the wealth; glitz and glam; mostly to explore what does UAE looks like); South Africa (He would love to go to Cape Town) and Azerbaijan and Croatia plus Antigua and Barbuda.
~Virgil sometimes loves going to the beach in Hawaii; especially whenever he is in Hawaii; either with his family of his dad and his sister, his friends (Yes, not just only Cassie; it could be everybody else on either Traci; Jaime, Bart: Ed; Victor, Tim and Stephanie--mostly it is with Cassie) or even on his own presence; he  always love going to a beach in Hawaii.
~During Halloween; Cassie remembers how she did have an idea of dressing up as a genie from one of her favorite My Scene movie Masquerade Madness where Delancey did dressed up as a genie and although she may had planned to dress up the genie from the Masquerade Madness several times; however it didn't ended up happening that is until when she arrives to the University of Hawaii where on Halloween day; she finally gets the chance to dress up as the genie from the My Scene movie "Masquerade Madness" as Virgil did mostly wear an Aloha Shirt (Or a Hawaii shirt); a pair of jeans and having a fake lei (Garland) around his neck to sport a simple costume yet to also represent Hawaii as well.
~Both of them are a big fan of the University of Hawaii American football Team as well as the Super Bowl; Virgil is a big fan of the Seattle Seahawks while Cassie is a fan of the Miami Dolphins.
~Virgil is a big fan of music; he sometimes play really loud music from his iPod where he always blast his music out loud sometimes whenever he is cleaning or making meals for both Cassie and V himself; people would think he is crazy for both blasting the music from his iPod so loud yet having to disrupt the neighbors in the morning with his music blasting from his iPod however after he explained to them about how he loves nothing better than having good music at their apartment (Yes, he and Cassie did share an apartment together as they both pay for the extensions equally.); they truthfully understand and left them (Yes, I am talking about Virgil and Cassie here) alone in their own presence.
~One of Virgil's favorite movie is the Fast and Furious series and whenever he has a conversation with Jaime, Garfield; Victor: Bart; Ed and Tim; he always talks about how he loves the Nissan Skyline GTR 34 that Brian (Played by the late Paul Walker, one of Virgil's favorite actor) had raced from the second movie of the Fast and Furious series.
~One of Virgil’s favorite topic he loves to share with Cassie is about the WNBA; he did remember how when the WNBA Fans did spoke about the WNBA expansion on social media; that's when he spoke to Cassie about how he wants to see a team in either San Francisco (Or Oakland); Toronto: Portland, San Diego: Milwaukee and Hawaii.
~Cassie remembers how streak hairs are so popular; she remembers how she wants pink streaks in her long blonde hair, however her parents especially her mom prohibits her from having pink streaks in her blonde hair as she worries their daughter might go against the school dressing code; Cassie only manages to get the Royal Hawaiian pink streaks in her long blonde hair when she enters the University of Hawaii.
~Virgil did have a Twitch account where he did a lot of the gaming streams that he did; particularly his favorite  games are Need for Speed Underground; NBA 2k (Mostly he plays the WNBA 2k) and both of Endless Ocean game. (Speaking of video games; he (Virgil) would love to see a WNBA 2k game.)
~Virgil also loves snorkeling especially after his first experience at the Haunama Bay Beach when they went there with their friends for a first time experience and he pleasantly enjoys it more than he expected.

"I have done nothing the last twelve years but wait for myself be myself again."
(paraphrasing Georgia O'Keefe regarding summer.)
*******
I have under my belt 100 teacher training hours of "Restorative Yoga for the Elderly." I made it my excuse to live and study in Singapore some time in 2011 under the guise of wanting to guide my Mom to gently stretch in her old age. Her Alzheimer's was detected early so I think (looking back) this was my mad scramble to fight the anxiety that came with my Mom's diagnosis. Pattern shows that my default coping mechanism is to study. 🤷🏻‍♀️
She was still all right then, save for a worrisome fall (which prompted the revealing brain scan) and the usual forgetfulness that comes with being a Mom (aka kulit) - she was definitely still A1, tiptop, sharp as they come.
Most of us kids went to Singapore with her that year, my brothers to catch the F1 in Sepang, and the girls stayed in our Ate's apartment. Mom made us walk and walk and walk and walk around Singapore because walking was her thing. She super enjoyed wading around that fake beach shoreline in Vivo City's rooftop - when she waved at me to join her, and I said, "Is the water chlorinated?" She rolled her eyes at me - without saying a word she commanded me to take my shoes off, put them aside, and wade shin deep across a mall pond to her side.
We (again) walked and walked and walked in circles, mall-water sloshing the tips of our jeans chatting about real beaches we've been to.
Even though she thought it silly that I was studying superslow yoga in a Buddhist temple she still humored me by doing the stretches I taught her. She was often distracted and impatient and would say "let's just have coffee and chat" instead. When I was done with the teacher training course, I showed her my certificate and she asked me solemnly if I converted to Buddhism; it turned out she was worried that I was going to that Buddhist campus everyday for faith reasons. I assured her I wasn't and slightly reprimanded her because even if I did decide to become Buddhist she should still love me. (my turn to roll my eyes) 😉 She looked relieved.
I usually let Mom have her way, in fact many of our "scheduled yoga sessions" ended up being long walks around our village and then we'd end up in our parish church somehow (coincidentally daw) always in time for 6pm mass. 😳
I'd often hear her tell my brothers saying, "Na isahan ko si Gangging, akala niya walking-walking lang kami, tapos napasimba ko bigla!" then she'd laugh her infectious laugh while I pretend to look like I lost a championship match. She enjoyed winning, and though it was WAY different when I was younger (I may have inherited this 'win or die' gene from her) but when we both got older I (surprise surprise) learned to enjoy losing to her.
I vividly remember the last long walk we took (I didn't know then that it was to be the last but maybe I did) - Brother (JunBads) and I took one elbow each and we walked slowly up and down our street. I remember she told Merl (her trusty healthcare partner) that she need not come along and to stay home because she'll be okay with us kids. I didn't think much of it then but I think that was probably her telling Merl how happy she is that we were both there to accompany her on her usual walk.
While walking I asked her why she didn't use a cane or a walker and she said "What for? I have lots of children, five for each arm." 🥹 She would point to our shadows - stretching and fading, shrinking and moving as we walked beneath streetlamp after streetlamp. She said "I'm really the shortest now! I'm even shorter than my last two eggs." (again, the laugh) 🪺
She referred to us (Brother and me, her 2nd batch kids, number 9 and number 10) collectively as "her last two eggs." It became a joke that always showed up in our Easter cards and even in the dwindling text greetings.
I stopped doing yoga completely as things got busier, Mom got less and less mobile, and I was getting more and more ill at ease with silence, stillness scared me; I hated the quiet because I was wrestling with anticipatory grief. (More on this another time, remind me to write about it.) I stayed in the noise and the funk and the speed and the dribble and the hustle and the mess of the crowd - all so I don't need to feel the crush of the Alzheimer's wall closing in, so I don't always feel the fear of what was to come.
I just spent my first Easter Sunday without my Mom; this 'massive missing' rendered me either weepy or snippy most of Holy Week. I'm sure she's rolling her eyes again at me from wherever.

Movie Walker Interview Highlights
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nakajima’s song is a great one which has been covered by a lot of people and it’s a song about life.
Beyond the ups and downs, the good times and hard times of life, the film emphasizes the importance of connecting with people.
When she came to know she was to work with Masaki Suda again, she kind of expected tough stuff -recalling some rough scenes from Drowning Love and Destruction Babies- and saw Ito as a new challenge as it depicted a quiet/peaceful love relationship.
As it is their third collaboration, she adds that they both know each other well when it comes to be in tune acting wise. Shooting in Singapore and Okinawa were done separately so it wasn’t easy to express the love between Aoi (Komatsu) and Ren (Suda) as he wasn’t there. In that sense she’s glad he was the one who played Ren to convey that.
About the numerous crying scenes, especially the one in Singapore, she tells the journalist she’s not very good at that and can’t cry out of the blue. She had to prepare and focus (…) It was easier for the airport scene as she felt she was more involved emotionally.
The actress says she believes in some sort of fate like a ‘thread of destiny’ and that the groups of people (co-stars and staff) she met at a certain time for a certain film will never be met again under the same circumstances, that’s it’s great to capture such moments which leave something memorable.
Her most vivid memory of the Heisei era is of course her encounter with director Nakashima, the fact that she then became an actress at a time when she had no clear idea about her professional future, she adds her approach to acting has changed since that time and that she has stronger goals thanks to communication and the things she learned from the staffs and from other actors.

Muskoka Farm Pre Training
Tumblr media
Muskoka Farm is one of the country’s top Thoroughbred pre training facilities. It has been educating future racehorses for decades, and it boasts a stellar collection of horses, including several local Group 1 winners.
Located in Gunderman, NSW, the 280-acre property features numerous impressive facilities, from a 2.4-kilometer crusher dust track to a 16-horse walker and 10 large fully fenced paddocks. It also has a private jetty/pontoon, two-bedroom guest house, and facility manager’s cottage. To know more about Pre Training, visit the Muskoka Farm website or call (02)45663106.
The thoroughbred racing industry makes a significant contribution to Australia’s regional economy with stallion fees and sales profits supporting thousands of jobs. Preparing a horse for the races is one of the most important parts of training and involves a lot of work. Horses that are not well prepared can be a disaster at the races.
Dan Excel, who won last year’s Group 1 Singapore Airlines International Cup and finished runner-up in the Champions Mile, has arrived at Muskoka Farm for his preparation for his return to Australia this spring. The 280 acre property is located north west of Sydney and boasts a state-of-the-art horse breaking facility.
Located in Gunderman, the world class pre-training facility is surrounded by natural bushland and provides an ideal environment to tailor its care to the physiology of race horses. It offers breaking, spelling and agistment. The property is equipped with 10 large fully-fenced paddocks, a two-kilometer crusher dust track and a 16-horse walking machine.
Training your horse is an important part of getting it ready for the races. It improves the muscle tone and strength of your horse, and it also helps prevent behavioural problems. This is why it’s essential to follow a specific training schedule.
Toby Pracey, a world class horse breaker whose clients include Golden Slipper winners, owns Muskoka Farm. The 280-acre facility offers breaking, spelling and agistment services. It features a two-kilometer crusher dust track, 27 day yards and 10 large fully fenced paddocks. It also has a helipad and private jetty/pontoon.
Wendy Lapointe oversees the spelling and pre training activities of the facility. She has over 30 years of experience in the industry, and her skills include equine and bull anesthetics. She is also a licensed veterinary practitioner and has extensive knowledge of breeding. She has a Provincial Trainers License. She is a key member of the team, and she is known for her dedication to her work.
For the horse to perform well, it needs to be fully rested. Typically, a racehorse will require a four to six week break after its last race. During this time, it will be allowed to rest and gain weight.
If you are looking to buy a racehorse, make sure that you visit Muskoka Farm. This world-class equine facility is located in Wisemans Ferry, New South Wales. It has a number of facilities, including a high-tech treadmill and a lap pool.

A horse’s preparation for the races is a crucial stage in the racing process. Without proper training, your horse can become injured or not perform well. Preparing for the races includes a variety of steps, including putting in miles on the track and using different training methods to make your horse faster. To know more about Pre Training, visit the Muskoka Farm website or call (02)45663106.
