The Merybury Chronicles: Volume VII

Festive COVID has struck, so just a small update today, I'm afraid, with some snippets of news from around the town.

A new retirement community has opened its doors - Purvis Lodge.

Herbert and Faith Goodie are the first residents to move in, and take advantage of the leisure facilities.

It's also time to say goodbye to another pet - Pip.

Sally smustles away the sadness of the loss. She's due to head off to uni any day now, along with several of her fellow teens.

The rumour around town is that George Wickham is playing away from home.

Certainly, a few months later, Marla Biggs registers the birth of a daughter, whom she names Georgina.

Does the little girl bear any resemblance to her purported father? Perhaps. I'm sure we'll be seeing her around town, so there'll be plenty of opportunity to decide. Georgina's stats:

Georgina and Vinnie board The Ocean Explorer 2 on Tuesday morning at 8 am in accordance with Lavinia's strict instructions. It is a calm and sunny day (is it ever anything else in Isla Paradiso?) already warm, the boat's passengers buzzing with anticipation. Spencer, Raj's First Mate, has been in radio contact with other boaties and whale-watchers who have confirmed that there has been some Orca and Beluga whale activity out near Refuge Island, so that's where they will be headed. The trip will take them approximately one hour.

They have only been at sea for forty five minutes when two orcas are spotted cavorting and playing in the waves; Spencer tells them to make as much noise as possible, the orcas love the attention and will respond by putting on a show. They clap and cheer and holler and true to Spencer's word the orcas reward them with a dazzling aerial display. Georgina's jaw almost hits the deck.

"Can you believe we're actually seeing this?" she says to Vinnie. "This has got to be the most magical honeymoon ever!"

With Nathan’s birthday approaching, the busy adults were trying their best to make time for taking care of him and teaching him the skills he needs to learn before he ages up. Of course, they never forgot baby Georgina - she’s getting as much attention and care as the birthday boy to-be.

It seemed that there’s another thing to celebrate besides the birthday - Jennifer just got awarded by the city hall for the high number of ghosts she already banished.

When the big, special day arrived, she volunteered to cook for the party. She didn’t cook that many food, as the few guests who managed to attend brought some with them.

Such pretty lights, just out of reach! Little Benedict explores the magic of the outside world for the first time.

The outdoor facilities are popular with visitors too. The hot tub is rarely vacant, and on this occasion is occupied by Bennet's parents, the ever-devoted Lizzy and Henry.

The Whale Museum is just around the corner from the booking office, a large corrugated iron building sitting on the end of a small bluff. Georgina and Vinnie enter through the gift shop. A couple of people browse the souvenirs, while a slender girl with a fluffy blonde halo of hair sprinkles fish food into an aquarium. She turns around and smiles at them.

“Hi,” she says. ”I’m Mia. Welcome to the Whale Museum. How are you doing today? Can I interest you in some museum entry tickets?”

“Yes please,” says Georgina. “How much are they?”

“§10 each, or free with the purchase of an Ocean Explorer Whale Watching tour,” says Mia.

“We just bought two Whale Watching tour tickets from the little booking office on the jetty!” says Georgina. "We're going tomorrow morning."

“Cool!” says Mia. “Then you automatically get free entry to the Whale Museum.“

“I’m surprised the lady who sold them to us didn’t mention that,” says Georgina. Mia gives a sympathetic nod and sighs.

“I'm sorry about that. Lavinia forgets to tell people stuff all the time, the poor thing. It's not her fault though, she comes from one of those old-money families where the in-breeding was rampant. I think I even heard that her parents were cousins? So sad. Anyway, the entrance to the museum is just through those doors there! Enjoy your stay!”
