The Silver Apples
Article by Simeon Coxe of the Silver Apples about the history of the Simeon “synthesizer” from the July 1-14, 1969 edition of underground news and arts publication Other Scenes.
Plus a schematic of the Simeon synthesizer.
And finally Simeon Coxe and the back of the Simeon “synthesizer” performing live with Silver Apples as part of a free concert in Washington Square Park in New York City from July 6, 1968. Photo by Syeus Mottel, courtesy of Matt Mottel

He knew which was the right tree at once, partly because it stood in the very center and partly because the great silver apples with which it was loaded shone so and cast a light of their own down on the shadowy places where the sunlight did not reach.

3/21/24.
Thanks to my friend Camille for turning me onto so much great music that I would never have found on my own. A couple of months ago she told me about The Four Seasons alter ego LP The Genuine Imitation Life Gazette. Then last month she told me about the Mother Soundtrack. A couple of days ago, she told me to listen to Silver Apples.
I'm not going to lie and say I've enjoyed every song, but each of the above releases is so different and interesting from my normal fare. And the most different of them all is Silver Apples (New York). I listened to the S/T debut (see link above) from which "Whirly Bird" comes.
The full LP came out in 1968 and influenced the likes of Suicide and Spacemen 3. I can't imagine Brian Eno or Devo weren't listening to this.
This 7" was originally released by Kapp Records and was reissued in 2016 by Play Loud!

Silver and Garfunkel
The now legendary Silver Apples were an American electronic rock group from New York. They are a pioneering fusion of rock and electronic music. Until 2008 when I picked up this cd of their first two lps all I heard of them was their reputation. Silver Apples (1968), Contact (1969) show where ELP & the British electronic movement sprung from. The first lp is spacey oscillators & drums with cosmic…

After six years my friend, another archaeologist, ends it with a Californian he has saved as “the cutest” in his phone.
At the café working on the quiz, he texts me: “Archaeology has no meaning in life. Everything dies and becomes part of the archaeology. Is that inspirational?”
I was listening to Kerouac’s poem In the Railroad Earth and love the line, “ all you San Franciscos will have to fall eventually and burn again.” It reminds me of a Deerhoof song, a Silver Apples song, and another line: “in my deepest essence I am just an artefact of our culture, just a little bubble winking at the brim of our civilization. And when it’s gone, I’ll be gone. Not that I mind.”
Does it have to have meaning to matter? I once dug up a 5,000 year old bit of bone with little carved hatchings on the side. Someone long ago felt compelled in the moment to leave a mark. Perhaps just looking to pass the time in the heat while overlooking the Mediterranean.
A relationship is an ephemeral artefact. No matter how lovely it is, the best case scenario is always somewhat sad. But it is one of the most beautiful artefacts. Because it is a uniquely shared experience between two people and cannot be disturbed by the archaeologist. It never dies and enters the ground. It is deeply personal and impenetrable. When it is gone, it is truly gone. And I think that is lovely. We should not be afraid to embrace that intangible beauty.

And then, like someone in a dream, he was walking across to the Tree, and the King and Queen were cheering him and all the creatures were cheering too.
